mcflurry didn't exactly fail today, so to speak.

she did her job. had her meetings. handed off her info to someone else. did her scouting. so on, so forth.

but for some reason, it just — today just sucked. it was just one of those days, where a line took too long, or someone kept yelling in your ear, or your phone died — where things just sucked.

so.

here she was, in the dead of night, on the curbside of a road in the bad part of town, next to the one ice cream shop that actually made it worth it to come here and, uh. nearly get shot.

mcflurry nervously looked left and right to see if there were any suspicious characters — before her tongue slipped out of her mouth like a haunter as she slurped up some double triple chocolate vanilla swirl.

ah. that made it better, a little.

Skyler was dragging her feet over the cement pavement.

The sparse lights in this part of town made it easy to hide her face in the shadows, away from prying eyes. She wasn't hiding, not exactly. She just didn't want to be found, that was all.

After the League meeting she'd gotten gloriously drunk, so much so that the next day she'd been unable to get out of bed. Except that the alcohol had only served to chase the grotesque images away temporarily.

Half-eaten bodies. The crunching of bones. The sheer carnage.

So here she was, wandering through the dirty streets of the bad part of town, looking for... She wasn't sure what. To chase the nightmares away perhaps.

Skyler turned a corner and leaned against the wall, sighing. The nearby streetlamp was enough to illuminate the bloody lip she was sporting.

Wait. Was that an ice cream shop?

The blonde pushed herself away from the wall and peered into the windows. Huh, so it was.

Maybe it'd help with the swelling.

something's wrong.

mcflurry's silhouette quickly stood up from the broken pavement as she backed away from the ice cream shop, her eyes scanning the area for anything suspicious.

— that came in the form of her nearly tripping over a gloom hiding in the uncut weeds next to the road. the moment she touched it, a poison powder started spewing.

"shit! shit!"

mcflurry pulled out the first poke ball she could grab and tossed it, lighting up the night with a flash of release — and then wormadam popped out, using psychic to grab the gloom and toss it at a nearby wall.

the gloom fainted easily enough. the small woman, however, was left coughing and trying to fan the poison particles away with her hat.

— and then she caught a whiff of the gloom's stench and her eyes widened. oh, fuck, that probably alerted a whole bunch of other pokemon out here —

quickly, a poke ball was tossed at the gloom to contain the problem, but the damage was already done.

The door closed behind Skyler's body as she exited the shop with a chocolate flavored ice cream in hand, looking mightily pleased with her new purchase. She hadn't come here for sweets - hadn't even known this part of town had an ice cream shop - but she definitely wouldn't complain about her newfound luck.

Two eyes watched her from the shadows of the nearby dumpster and when Skyler stepped closer the shape, it put itself in her path, jaws glinting with sharp teeth.

Skyler stopped, quirking an eyebrow at the drool gathering at the corners of the Krokorok's mouth. She moved the ice cream and nearly snorted in laughter when the pokémon's eyes followed the movement. "It's mine," she teased the pokémon, releasing a Golduck at the same time. "Go away."

The Krokorok was determined, though. It threw itself at Sapphire, who swiftly rebuffed it with an AQUA JET. Skyler threw a pokéball to catch the pokémon.

No one was getting her ice cream, not after the week she'd had.

The blonde was finally starting to relax when she heard a strangely familiar voice curse out loud. Something cracked under her shoes as she approached the source, the familiar short frame and dark hair catching Skyler's eyes. There was a horrible stench in the air.

Skyler tilted her head to the side, taking another lick of her ice cream with a pleased hum. Then something clicked in her brain and her lips curled in a grin.

"Mac?"

a familiar voice rings out in the night, just as mcflurry sets her ice cream bowl on the ground, yanking out an antidote and spraying it all over her face before she starts having a terrible reaction to the poison.

"ach, mcyuck, pweh — wait, huh — captain?"

mcflurry barely gets the words out of her mouth before a cat yowls, its spine arcing way upwards from its perch atop the wall the gloom just slammed into. the tiny woman can only groan and sigh as wormadam readies itself once more.

"haw, mcchrist, i just — i just mcwanted some ice cream —"

as mcflurry whines, the alolan meowth comes down with an angry set of tough claws, pouncing onto wormadam in a blur. its fury swipes barely does anything to the thick leafy coat — all of mcflurry's pokemon were defensively-minded and well-trained under rocket and far better than this half-starved stray, even with its ability.

"ughh. b-bug buzz!"

mcflurry picks her ice cream up, trying to retreat back to the ice cream shop while her wormadam finishes the job. but then the shutters close and a tired-looking employee with a 5 o' clock shadow and mussy hair locks the door with deadened eyes, and mcflurry groans as she feels the lock click.

"— and they mclocked the door. man... the pokemon're just gonna keep mccoming at this rate. sorry, cap."

the dizzied-then-fainted cat at the wormadam's feet(?) laid unconscious, its eyes swirling and twitching with the nervous feedback of a bug buzz. figuring this was yet another stray to take care of, mcflurry shook her head, squatted down, and pressed a poke ball to its body.

Skyler took another lick of her chocolate ice cream as the spectacle unfolded before her. There was a strange stench in the air and it seemed to be concentrated around Mcflurry. No wonder the pokémon were reacting so negatively to it - even her nose was giving her severe warnings that if she didn't walk away soon, it would go on strike.

She didn't blame the tired looking guy on the other side of the door for denying them entry - honestly, Skyler probably would've done the same. She sighed and sat on the steps leading up the to the shop's entrance while Mac dealt with the angry Meowth. She really should come here more often - this ice cream was quite good.

"How come," Skyler started, her voice drawling out the words with a teasing undertone, "every time I find you, Mac, you're in some sort of trouble?" The image of a halfway toasted Mcflurry atop a sheet of ice passed through Skyler's mind fleetingly. This time, though, Mac had swiftly solved the problem all by herself.

An amused curl of the lips was Skyler's answer to Mcflurry's apology. She waved her hand, as if saying 'it's no problem'. "I don't mind. It takes my mind off of things." Oops, she hadn't meant to say that. Oh well.

The shadow of a passing Skuntank caught Skyler's attention, but she simply let it go - there were enough aggressive pokémon around them without her provoking this one too. Sapphire huffed besides her, the Golduck clearly spoiling for a fight.

mcflurry sighed. it was true, wasn't it? just how much she got in trouble. first, showing up on a raft of ice, and now this? at the same time, though...

...well. with the swollen, bloody lip and the way she carried herself, captain dross seemed really off-kilter as well. mcflurry's compassion won out easily over her exasperation.

"you, uh — sorry. but you mclook like shit," mcflurry murmured, rubbing the side of her face that stung with the chemical itch of the antidote working its wiles, "we should probably get mcgoing. my place is... my place is close."

with that, mcflurry sighed and started walking her way further into the darkened streets, looking backwards to make sure skyler was following.

mcflurry's wormadam gave a dirty look at a gastly looking to get its fight on, apparently eager to join the rest of the crew. a quick psychic sent it flying away, scurrying off.

"what're you — doing here? did you get into a mcstreet fight or, uh, something?"

A wry chuckle escaped Skyler's throat at Mcflurry's statement. "I do look like shit, don't I?" Her fingers gingerly touched the swollen area on her lower lip and she winced slightly at the pain, but didn't seem overly concerned about it. After all, she'd done this to herself - kind of. "I wasn't exactly planning on stumbling upon someone I knew."

Despite her words, the blonde ran a hand over her unruly curls before she stood up and started to follow Mcflurry down the street. Now that her delightfully cold ice cream was unfortunately nearing its end, her lip was starting to throb in time with her pulse.

The sudden appearance of a Gastly shouldn't have been much of a surprise considering the time and place; yet, Skyler's face grew a few shades paler at the sight of it. She closed the distance between herself and the other woman, doing her best to act nonchalant about it and probably failing. Ghosts were just... They creeped her out.

"Nah, not a street fight." She couldn't help but look around, slightly paranoid, on the lookout for more sneaky ghost types. "Underground fighting pits." She focused her attention on Mcflurry again, feeling tired - and a bit sheepish, though she couldn't seem to work out why. "You'd be amazed at the amount of those around these parts."

"you, uh, you... don't seem the... mctype. sorry? well, doesn't matter."

a soft grunt left her lips as mcflurry shook the new information off. sure, people got in fights for money around here, she lived here long enough to know that much. but... still. the captain?

more and more, this lady seemed like something out of a novel. for different reasons this time, though.

still, though, she did have her fears. mcflurry casually held skyler's hand with her free hand. her thumb running over the seafarer's roughened knuckles.

"i'll mcpatch you up at home. we just, uh. gotta — gotta get outta here."

another meowth pounced the moment she said that, and mcflurry dropped her ice cream this time, the mostly-eaten mess now scrambled all over the floor as she shoved the cat away mid-air.

"aw, man — wormadam! bug bu — oh, you mcgot it."

the bug-type had already sent a pointed wave of sound at the cat, and the super-effective STAB easily did the trick. the meowth was left teetering back and forth on the street drunkenly before toppling over.

"mmm..."

mcflurry sighed, squeezing skyler's hand as she tossed another poke ball at her second meowth tonight.

"Oh no, I'm not the type. Usually." She'd gotten her ass handed to her, in fact. But only after she'd landed a few good punches, which had felt amazing. It beat staying at home thinking about her dead friend, and managed to take her mind off of things. Skyler didn't voice any of this out loud, however, opting to simply shrug.

Was it an unhealthy coping mechanism? Probably. Would she stop doing it? Hell no.

She didn't expect the hand that curled around hers. Although Skyler was definitely a touchy-feely sort of person, her mind was somewhere less pleasant at the moment. Still, the warmth brought a small, sincere smile to her lips. "I suddenly feel like a puppy you took pity on and decided to bring home, Mac." There was an edge of amusement to her words, showing Mcflurry she wasn't being serious. Although - she did kind of feel that way. It was bizarre.

The thumb that ran over her knuckles made the smile on Skyler's lips grow warmer. Before she could say anything else, another Meowth decided to have a go at them. What was it with wild pokémon tonight? Was the Gloom's stench still sticking to them?Maybe it was some kind of pheromone or something.

Mcflurry and her Wormadan made short work of the Meowth, and ended up capturing it. "What have you been up to, Mac?" Skyler hadn't seen Mcflurry since... well. The day they'd met and the night that followed.
