She's doing it for the wooloo let's be real.

Specifically for the chance to hug one of them. Let alone it end up needing consoling after getting lost from home. Arceus, Maiya would die for the wooloo cuddles. They sooth her fiery and ill tempered soul.

Which is probably why she's a little crabby about having a partner again, some league regulation bullshit. 'What if something happens in the field and you need help blah blah blah'. She didn't sign up to be an assistant or to have one just for the cash (and the pokemon cuddling, apparently) so neither listening to the old man keep going on an on about his lost pokemon nor waiting for her partner in pokemon rescuing is very high on her list of things to do today.

Maiya has walked away from him mid plea, a surprising amount of focus etched into her features. The determination in her eyes is on par with the crease on her forehead as she follows the fence line. You can see where the storm took out some of the posts from here and she's headed for it. No better place to start than where they got freed from right? It sounds like a bright idea at least.

[attr="class","spiral"]When Ms. Halesberry first asked Birdie to check in on her rancher pal in Petalburg City Birdie was flattered, but the idea of going back out into the boonies when she was just getting re-acquainted with more exciting sights felt . . . bad. Still, the boost to her pride was enough to get her on a boat (well, a couple boats) out to the quiet southwest of Hoenn.

She expected that once her task was done she'd be more than ready to head up to Rustboro and start hitting up proper cities again, but in reality? It's kind of nice out here! When the next rancher told her he had a friend in Oldale that might need an extra pair of hands she found herself surprisingly excited to make the trip; and that excitement hasn't faded by the time she enters the town proper. If anything it grows!

How couldn't it? The little town is so cute!

When she makes her way to the ranch it's with a spring in her step (and a Cufant practically cuddling her heels). This bright mood dims a little bit when the old rancher she meets seems in a bit of a mood, and dims even more when she learns it almost has more to do with her partner for the day than the Wooloo he's worried for. Something about 'kids these days' and 'being too impatient to let an old man finish a thought'.

"Uh, sorry to hear it," she apologizes bashfully and is met with a dismissal wave of a hand, a grumbled 'not exactly your fault, is it?'. Then he points her in the direction of the break in the fence, where Birdie can already see someone looking around. Okay! Her last two partners were a little prickly, but friendly in the end. Surely this one will be too!

"Hey! Any leads?" she shouts the question as she crosses the field, waving a friendly hand above her head in greeting. The distance between them is a foot or so wider than she'd like even as she calls out to the other girl. Dozer sticking so tight to her ankles makes speedy movement a bit of a challenge.

there's no gentleness or caution in her movements as she picks at the boards. Maiya tosses them aside as quickly as she plucks them up. A couple of the larger ones take a little more effort than the rest and she's focused on moving one of them when the other girl approaches. If she expects any sort of greeting she doesn't get it. Maiya seems to be ignoring her when she steps through the broken fence to examine a different board and beyond that, the mud and grass on the other side of the fence.

The area is packed down well, sloppy tracks left behind by the fleeing pokemon. Rain has washed a fair amount away but it hasn't dampened all of it. She imagines they'll find tracks from mud caked hooves eventually too.

"they're probably in the trees." her hands are on her hips when she finally acknowledges the other girl. She's rude but not that. Her eyes look down at the cufant at the girls heels. She raises an eyebrow. Says nothing. Moves to make her way towards the treeline where the disruption in the grass seems to lead. It's a moment later that she turns and asks something wasn't patient enough to hear.

"He say how many there are?" you know, so she can make sure to bring back and hug every last one of them.

[attr="class","spiral"]It's a bit of a bummer to once again be met by a cold shoulder. As much as she loves these ranch jobs she can't say she enjoys this coincidental constant within them. Still, it gives Birdie a second to look after Dozer. While she waits for the other girl to respond to her in some way she crouches down to pet the top of her Cufant's head. He gives a few soft trumpets through his trunk at the attention.

"See, it's not so bad out here," she murmurs to him, taking her other hand and stroking his cheek. He still seems kind of nervous, but at least doesn't go back to hugging her legs when she stands back up. Though the look from their partner for the day does make him reconsider that decision.

"The trees . . ." she echoes, finally seeing the stomped down grass that leads out from the broken fence, "Uh, how many? I think it was, uh, five? Yeah, he said five I'm pretty sure." It's probably not the confident answer her partner was hoping for but with all the old man's rambling it was kind of hard to catch the important facts and parse them from the chatter. Especially when someone got him all worked up by ignoring him before she go there.

Maiya pays attention to the important part, 5 wooloos are loose and if she finds them first she gets to hug them.

If the she's worried about her partner's not so confident answer, or the state of her pokemon it doesn't show one bit. Maiya's eyes brighten at the daydream of soft fluffy wool in her arms, pleasantly bleating it's thank you's across the meadow. The twinkle in her eye is almost alarming as she claps her hands and hops over a broken board and through the gap in the fence.

"Then what are we waiting for?" she almost sounds happy, in that way only fluffy cuddles could make a girl happy. She reaches for her belt and produces a poekmon if her own, the salazzle hisses a greeting before slithering across the ground, belly low. The pokemon easily takes the lead following the path in the grass with a delighted wiggle. "Hunt 'em orchid, we've got no time to waste!"

She only spares a glance over her should to make sure the other girl doesn't fall behind.

[attr="class","spiral"]Okay, so maybe her partner is a bit icy, but at least she's got some passion! Birdie can't help but be a bit amazed at the turnaround in energy between her lackluster "greeting" and her sudden leap into action to find the Wooloo. It's really something else!

"Uh, nothing, I guess!" she replies to the other girl's question before looking down at Dozer again, "C'mon buddy, you heard her! No time to waste! Let's follow 'em!"

She doesn't give her Cufant much choice once she makes the suggestion. Her partner isn't exactly waiting for her as she follows her, uh, lizard . . . thing . . . so Birdie can't keep moving at the anxious pace her pokemon was keeping up until now. And that's a good thing! He needs to build confidence!

So as she tears off after her partner, Dozer tears off after her -- anxiously trumpeting every few steps.
