If Celia had successfully struck a nerve, Sabine's resting bitch face did not reveal it. She stares, unimpressed, back at the woman at the mention of her late husband.[break][break]

"He died actually. Cancer."[break][break]

And then she inspects her nails, making an excellent show of not being phased by her interjection. Beneath the facade, however, Sabine was uncomfortable and rattled. It comes as a great relief when the woman finally leaves, post-it note in hand. Sabine breathes out a sigh as though she'd been holding it.[break][break]

"Well, now that that's over with-- are you ready to go?"[break][break]

Impatience lines her tone, and she does not hide her stress well in private with her brother. Her eyes suggest, however, that she'd rather not speak of it.[break][break]

He'd known she had a husband. What he hadn't known was that he'd died of cancer. Of course, he thought, Sabine could just be lying for her benefit in one last jab. But even he had a slight bit of trouble believing she'd stoop that low.[break][break]

Celia leaves, and Remiel sighs in tandem with his sister, closing out the files on his computer before logging out altogether. Packing up what little he has to take in his briefcase afterwards, the ambassador comes to an abrupt stop at the sound of Sabine's impatient remark.[break][break]

His eyes meet hers, but he hesitates to sharpen them into a piercing glare. Thoughts of her husband laying sickly and frail on his death flash through his mind. From the look of things, she didn't appear in any mood to talk about it. Her tone was just instinct; a defensive mechanism.[break][break]

To think that he wasn't the same, so quick to judge her with a glare at an instant's notice, was foolhardy. When, exactly, did attacking each other in such venomous ways become the norm? He takes a deep breath; exhales through his nostrils as he moves on.[break][break]

"Let's go," He utters, lifting his briefcase off the desk before turning to check himself in front of a mirror. As he fixes his collar with a single hand, he glances at the reflection of his sister. He felt sympathy for a battle he hadn't known she'd fought. Though not enough to let her transgressions here go without warning. "But Sabine... should that ever happen again, I ask that you don't interfere with my business. Understood?"[break]

But there is enough of a hint of grief to suggest that whatever had happened, it hadn't sat well with her. And if mother hadn't told him, then she obviously hadn't found it worth talking about.[break][break]

Sabine's impatience is indicative of her discomfort, and she finds it difficult to focus even while he's attempting to chastise her. His tone of voice reminds her of mother's and she rolls her eyes. Anything to change the subject.[break][break]

"No promises, big brother. What would you ever do without me?"[break][break]

Her gusto is off-tune, however, and there's no heart in it. Instead of waiting around to hear more about it, she strides right out the door, her heart thudding painfully in her chest with every step.[break][break]

His first instinct is to challenge her attitude; her eye-roll. He wants to stop her in her tracks, and ensure she understands before they leave the boundaries of this room. Ultimately, he decides against it, and she strides out the door with all the swagger of a lioness.[break][break]

It had taken him nearly all of his youth to realize it, but Sabine wasn't, in fact, the vindictive, petty, manipulative lioness he believed her to be. At least, not entirely. That was the shadow of their mother cast upon her, slithering into her ears and infecting her mind to snap, sneer, and speak vicious things in the name of power and maintaining it.[break][break]

The real Sabine had been lost to them years ago: a little girl behind a slideshow of masks. He hardly remembered her smile.[break][break]

With a sigh, he lifts his briefcase and follows behind the woman calling herself his sister now.[break][break]
