Sabine was a princess hopelessly lost in a dark alley of self-doubt, of dread, of anticipation and expectation and hopes dashed. But this had been, for the first time in perhaps forever, that she had made this decision entirely on her own.[break][break]

Her mother had made it clear that if she left, she would find no shoulder to cry on when she inevitably realized the error of her ways. [break][break]

Her mother had looked down the nose at her only daughter with that same contempt she always had- but now Sabine could see it. For so long she'd hopelessly shut her eyes closed to the lack of love she'd received, convinced herself that it was normal, that it was real.[break][break]

But all mother cared about were her precious lions, her precious baubles, and the fact that the curtains in the dining hall were horrific. Frankly, she'd thought they were lovely.[break][break]

It was a damn shame that when she'd left, mother's prized lions had come with her.[break][break]

Sabine's spiral of panic stills immediately when Lulu's hand smooths over the thin fabric of her outfit, pressure placed to pull her close. It catches her off guard with a familiarity and a forcefulness that she still finds she hasn't grown accustomed to. In Galar she had been a porcelain doll tucked up on a tall shelf- to be looked at and adored, but never touched.[break][break]

Her craving for physical touch had only grown since she had met Lulu.[break][break]

Sabine is quiet, regarding this woman- her girlfriend, she had come to refer to her as- with an uncharacteristically bashful smile. Not even she is certain whether she is putting on a show, pinching her face a certain way to encourage a reaction she wanted. Nothing was simple anymore.[break][break]

"Sell it? Why would I--?"[break][break]

Lulu has pulled away at this point, and now regards her in full. Her eyes never leave hers, studying, waiting, gauging her reaction. Sabine's eyes are wide, her expression unfathomable, indescribable. It is a mixture of joy, perhaps, or something adjacent, and also unease. [break][break]

It surprises her, forces her to slow her anxious babbling to listen. With Lulu, listening came easier. Sometimes that scared her.[break][break]

And it is why she hesitates now, arms slowly falling loose at her sides instead of crossed in frustration across her chest. The woman in front of her watches her, attention captivating. Sabine draws quiet breath where Lulu approaches, fingers tracing skin, tucking hair into place along her temple. [break][break]

"This is the farthest from a castle I could ever get. It's... embarrassing."[break][break]

Her fingers retreat, but not fast enough to put distance between them. Artie closes it immediately, stepping forward to whisper against her cheek. But it isn't his words that startle her into silence, is was the warmth that still lingers against her cheek.[break][break]

He'd kissed her.[break][break]

Maybe not in the conventional sense, but he'd kissed her.[break][break]

Warmth fills her cheeks and she glances away, uncomfortable and unable to respond. Eventually, however, her eyes follow him where he turns away. But rather than disappear into the bathroom like she'd suggested, he begins to tug his tie loose and slacken his jacket in the middle of the room.[break][break]

"Artie!"[break][break]

She gasps, lurching forward and placing her palms on either of his shoulders. Sabine pushes him toward the bathroom with the intent to close the door behind him and take a breath. [break][break]

Sabine frowns, more than a little rattled and confused. The more they talked about the painting, the less confident she felt in her own skin. She had a desperate need to please, to be confident and regal and beautiful. But her home was anything but, and even despite Lulu's comforting gaze and kind words, Sabine can only feel the heavy weight of her mother's disappointment.[break][break]

Sabine completely overlooks everything else Lulu says. The Gardevoir's pokeball is snatched away from the woman and she sucks in a sharp breath. Was she close to tears?[break][break]

"You know where I won't."[break][break]

For the sake of making a scene and having a dramatic exit, Sabine storms off. The moment Lulu is out of sight and she has a moment to catch her breath and overthink the situation, she releases Gardevoir to teleport home. [break][break]

There is a moment there in which she doubts Lulu's words. In which she isn't sure whether to blindly accept them or to pick them apart. Did she mean it?[break][break]

"That makes sense, he does have a regal glare."[break][break]

She chooses to push it aside, and instead becomes absorbed in the way Lulu's eyes flit around the room, taking in every blemish, every nook and cranny. It makes her self-conscious, awkward, anxious; a feeling she hasn't felt in a very long time.[break][break]

"It's pathetic."[break][break]

She'd hoped the painting could be a distraction, that maybe Lulu would be so absorbed in it that she would look only at it and not at the rest of the apartment. It was a silly thought, a childish one, really. Frankly, she isn't sure at all why she'd even invited her over.[break][break]

But there is enough of a hint of grief to suggest that whatever had happened, it hadn't sat well with her. And if mother hadn't told him, then she obviously hadn't found it worth talking about.[break][break]

Sabine's impatience is indicative of her discomfort, and she finds it difficult to focus even while he's attempting to chastise her. His tone of voice reminds her of mother's and she rolls her eyes. Anything to change the subject.[break][break]

"No promises, big brother. What would you ever do without me?"[break][break]

Her gusto is off-tune, however, and there's no heart in it. Instead of waiting around to hear more about it, she strides right out the door, her heart thudding painfully in her chest with every step.[break][break]

Sabine stares at her, her expression hot, upset, challenging. She's flying off the handle at the drop of a hat, expressing herself in the only way she'd ever known how: with drama. She needed to be seen, to be heard; and it hurt more than she realized to be brushed aside and rejected like she had.[break][break]

Sabine is almost too self-absorbed to notice the bark of laughter. But her brain replays it, enunciates it, shines a spotlight on it. [break][break]

"You hate it."[break][break]

The princess' face twitches, unwilling to commit to expressing disappointment or anger. It makes her look constipated, honestly. Lulu directs her attention to Akhenaton's unhappy expression and she squints, clearly not seeing it. Or simply choosing not to.[break][break]

"He looks fine to me, I don't see what you're saying."[break][break]

Sabine crosses her arms over her chest, uncomfortable and awkward for perhaps the first time in front of Lulu. She scans and rescans the painting, looking for what could have possibly made her laugh like that. But it looked perfect, looked exactly how she'd wanted it to. She frowns, tilting her head.[break][break]

Sabine had been expecting something other than acceptance. Other than a pokeball to be pressed into her hand and for Lulu to have shrugged off the princess' hurt feelings and appear otherwise unfazed.[break][break]

Granted, Sabine is only looking at the surface reaction. She isn't reading that far into it. Frankly, one might say that the woman was overreacting.[break][break]

And then, to set her off even more, Lulu attempts to flirt. Sabine looks appalled, but more than that, confused.[break][break]

"Oh, so you'll happily have me visit you at home, in private, but you'll give me the cold shoulder here? Are you ashamed of me, Lulu? Is that it?"[break][break]
