This was, by far, the realest and most interesting thing she had experienced. Sabine was sheltered, secluded from the world of knowledge and intrigue because she'd been told that this was a world not meant for her. [break][break]

And here Lulu was, opening that previously-closed door wide open and saying 'hey, look at this'. Although she kept her emotions under lock and key, this was huge. [break][break]

It was what spurred her unexpected kiss. It was an unspoken thank you, one that Sabine didn't have the courage to put into words. Honestly, it was hard to tell if she even understood it herself. [break][break]

Lulu pulls away, however, which is an unexpected and unpleasant reaction given how happy she had felt. The window closes and the door slams shut, and Sabine is left staring back at her with bewildered, discomforted irritation. [break][break]

"Okay."[break][break]

Sabine steps away, swallowing her hurt.[break][break]

What anxiety Lulu is experiencing is completely overlooked, regardless of if it was obvious in her actions and expressions. Sabine's warm hands are delicate against her eyes, completely unaware of the measured breaths the woman takes. Excitement, selfish anticipation, it clouds all judgment. [break][break]

"Shh.. shh, never you mind. This is merely temporary."[break][break]

For some reason, it sounds as if she is reassuring herself, and not Lulu. Yet again, her pride takes control, snuffing out any attempt to be any degree of normal. This was less of a surprise for Lulu, clearly, as it was a surprise for Sabine.[break][break]

But was that entirely true?[break][break]

The shadow at their backs does not go unnoticed- but at this point Sabine has accepted it as a constant presence. Fearless, one might call it, or perhaps just stupid. [break][break]

Sabine fumbles with the door, pushing it open with a horrible creak. Light pours into the apartment from a balcony window at the far end. Effort has been put in to make the place look higher class, but the peeling wallpaper and the smell of smoke still sticks, unfortunately.[break][break]

"This was, Lulu, and keep your eyes closed!"[break][break]

She laces her fingers neatly through hers, tugging her along to the living area.[break][break]

She purses her lips, intrigued. Her attention is quickly re-absorbed by the machine and the energy it gives off. It gives her goosebumps, a tremble of anticipation. It quite literally took her breath away, much the same way Lulu had when she'd first met- not that she'd made been obvious about it.[break][break]

But now she was comfortable, so her awe was made clear.[break][break]

"Sounds exciting."[break][break]

She meant it.[break][break]

Lulu sifts through holograms and she does her best to keep up, enamored by the technology, by the knowledge, by the possibilities. [break][break]

"It's not bad.."[break][break]

But there is a glint in the woman's eye, a hunger that Sabine can feel is shared between them. And, whispered like a secret, Sabine breathes out a sigh. A time machine? [break][break]

"Oh.. but baby-- that's better."[break][break]

Lulu's lips pull back to grin, and Sabine doesn't hesitate: she caresses her cheek and pulls her in for a kiss.[break][break]

"My lips are sealed, love."[break][break]

Sabine had always been strong-willed, stubborn, and selfish. She had always put herself first, disregarding anyone elses feelings or needs. So for her to have, without hesitation, invite Lulu Flint over like this was out of character.[break][break]

But it was a testament to how deeply she cared for the woman, whether she was willing to admit it or not. Sabine was nothing if not bold. And this, the plan that she had in store, would be evidence of that. [break][break]

It is only as Lulu would be crossing the threshold that Sabine feels a twinge of anxiety- but not regret. Since arriving in Hoenn she had been secretive, or perhaps reluctant to show anyone her home. In Hammerlocke she had lived like a princess, but in Rustboro she had been forced to bend the knee and accept her losses. [break][break]

Fortunately, she'd been able to successfully eradicate the bug infestation.[break][break]

Excitement grants her confidence to overcome her shame for where she lives, and she pounces upon Lulu.[break][break]

"Hello, my love-- come this way and close your eyes. I have a surprise for you."[break][break]

She moves to cover Lulu's eyes with her hands before leading her inside. Maybe if she hid the entrance, Lulu wouldn't notice how low on the totem pole she really was.[break][break]

Sabine rolls her eyes, evidently not impressed or convinced by his attempt at an apology. But for all of her holier-than-thou attitude, she still beckons him to follow her. Her excitement for what's in store outweighs whatever frustration she might feel for his delayed arrival.[break][break]

In fact, she already has several interpretations of the painting he would be making set aside. Some of half-covered, but most are in full-view. It's clear she's had many attempts that, while beautiful, were unsuccessful. What she needed was an outside eye- someone who wasn't herself interpreting the meaning behind the strokes.[break][break]

Xander's compliment does unanswered- though flattery is a very good motivation to keep her interested. She might not respond with a verbal 'thank you', but she positively swells with ego while she paces around her seat.[break][break]

"That won't be an issue."[break][break]

If necessary, the princess wouldn't hesitate to invite him back throughout the week.[break][break]

For the first time in, perhaps, forever, Sabine's attention is genuine. Not that it hadn't ever been when in Lulu's company- but when faced with any sort of mundane topic, Sabine found it difficult to remain engaged.[break][break]

But when Lulu speaks, the woman's excitement bleeds into her and is absorbed on contact. For the first time, Lulu would see her princess in genuine awe. She sucks in a breath, emerald attention skirting across what technology was put on display in front of her. Virtually none of it is familiar to her, but she can feel that anticipation, that sense of excitement building.[break][break]

This hunger for knowledge had often laid dormant, but it was stirring now. [break][break]

"Mega stones, you say?" She glances back to Lulu briefly, but her focus is on the stone that Zac Ramsay had presented to her when they'd first met. "So those stones are space material?"[break][break]

Sabine does not hide the note of passion in her voice - that hunger. Her attention settles on amber eyes, and she smiles.[break][break]

"And what are your plans for this extremely powerful bioenergy, my love?"[break][break]

Despite her best attempt to be mindful of Lulu's injury, to take into consideration her comfort - the other woman disregards that to hold onto her tighter. It prompts a confused, questioning look from the princess, one guarded with a half-smile. But she doesn't stop her, more than willing to be selfish and take all that she could, all of the affection that Lulu had to offer.[break][break]

She had been wanted, sure. But to be needed was a sensation and a driving factor that she had never before experienced. But it had quickly become something she craved - but only from her.[break][break]

To say that Lulu was just another lover would be a lie.[break][break]

The princess' gaze sweeps over the controls briefly before recentering on Lulu. She is captivated by the woman's smile, first and foremost, and she does not hesitate to follow her lead. In response to the question, however, Sabine's expression is blank and questioning.[break][break]

"No, but I would love for you to tell me."[break][break]

Lulu had never truly scared Sabine- and if she had, she had never shown any submission to it. She was far too stubborn for that, and too fucking good at feigning ignorance and pretending she hadn't heard. So when Lulu's voice turns to a note of rage, questioning her rejection, Sabine is busy inspecting her nails.[break][break]

"You heard me."[break][break]

Fortunately, the lab coat is removed from her vision, prompting the princess to raise her attention from her manicure to meet Lulu's now-softening gaze. Oh, the power she held.[break][break]

And how fickle it might be.[break][break]

Satisfaction grows on her features as Lulu's darkness lashes out at everyone else except for her. She practically basks in it, emerald gaze watching as the various technicians and scientists scatter. Where their attention returns, it is in sporadic intervals so that Lulu does not lash out a second time - for there very well might not be a second time.[break][break]

And Sabine lets out a pointedly satisfied 'huff' when the lab coat is set back on its hook. She trails after Lulu, brushing dark hair over her shoulder as they come into the room with the hologram projector. Genuine awe and astonishment crosses over her expression, eyebrows lifting to become lost in dark hair. [break][break]

"Ohh.. I like this."[break][break]

Sabine, shoulder to shoulder with the woman, reaches gently for her bandaged hand. Her pinky finger curls around Lulu's, careful not to cause further harm. It was instinctual, but it felt right. [break][break]

"Show me how it works."[break][break]

Niggling at the back of her mind, the scene from a few days ago continued to play back in her mind. The way Lulu had pulled away from her, so cold, so stiff.[break][break]

'I'm going to go play solitaire.'[break][break]

And then Djall's body on the floor of the kitchen, the nightmare that had hovered above him. The rest is hazy, constantly changing as a result of her own discomfort and disbelief. But the pieces fit together haphazardously in that she had fucked up somehow.[break][break]

Rather than be her lover's shoulder to lean on, she had cast her worries aside without thought. [break][break]

You're being dramatic.[break][break]

It was why she was here now, despite her own meaningless plans and preferences. Since coming to Hoenn she had all but avoided any need to visit the submarine. The thought of being hundreds, maybe thousands of feet below the sea at any point in time(not that they ever dove that deep lately, thanks Genesect) did not settle well in her stomach.[break][break]

She preferred her own two feet on the ground, with wind in her hair and sea spray on her face: and even that was a stretch. [break][break]

Sabine comes to a stilted halt next to Lulu, taking in the room and the people who's eyes had, for a second, lingered. But an outstretched hand is held out to her and, while it brings her relief to see Lulu reaching for her again, the white article of clothing hanging from her fingertips elicits a violent reaction from the princess.[break][break]

"You must be mad. I'm not wearing that. There is a stain on it."[break][break]

The woman's nose pinches in protest as she looks it over from a distance, unwilling to even touch it.[break][break]

"My own clothes are much more befitting of figure, Lulu, please."[break][break]

But she did. She did want to see her teeth, and she would continue to check them every day if it meant stilling this woman's fears, if it meant proving to her time and time again that there were no sharp edges, no serated, gnashing horrors.[break][break]

The drool doesn't even slow her. The tears against her fingers don't slow her. The woman, bare-faced, red eyed and puffy, doesn't slow her.[break][break]

Sabine is meticulous and unrealistically impatient. She runs her fingers through Lulu's hair again and again and again until she stops sobbing, until those mournful noises of fear turn to quiet mumbles of exhaustion. And it didn't matter to Sabine who or what Lulu was, it never had. Not in the way that felt important - people were ever-changing, people were temporary.[break][break]

"You're being dramatic."[break][break]

Sabine opts for deflection. Perhaps it is a side-effect of her inflated ego, of her refusal to see herself as anything other than untouchable. Or maybe it was that unaddressed notion that Lulu was special. That unspoken sense of longing she felt when her fingers weren't laced through hers, when her smell didn't linger on her clothes.[break][break]

It was unthinkable to think that she was unsafe with the woman. She had seen snippets of her demons, heard the whispers of her nightmares, her fears, her horrors. And still she held fast, reaching for her through the dark, a pale hand piercing the void.[break][break]

"I'm not going anywhere."[break][break]

The magnitude of her promise is jarring, for a moment. Something she is sure she had heard whispered to her once, but they had been empty. When they left her lips, she knew that they wouldn't be empty. [break][break]

She almost lets go. She almost lets go because Lulu's reaction is violent, is terrified. But she doesn't, and it is in that hesitation that everything works itself out. In fact, it helps to stir the princess awake, to be alert, to be present.[break][break]

Her hand remains and she shifts just as Lulu twists to tuck herself into her. Sabine sets her chin atop her head, tightening her grip to give the woman comfort, security, whatever it was that she needed so desperately that she wept. And she listens, running fingers through dark hair. To some degree the situation is amusing, like she is coddling a child who'd just had a nightmare.[break][break]

Except this isn't funny. This is Lulu: her Lulu who trembles like a leaf in her arms, so scared and in so much pain. [break][break]

"Let me see your face, my love. Let me take a look at your teeth."[break][break]

Should she have been allowed, Sabine would lean back enough to lift Lulu's upper lip in an attempt to find what Sharpedo teeth she knew wouldn't be there.[break][break]

"You're not a Sharpedo, you're Lulu. You are just you, just Lulu."[break][break]

Tears wet her chest where the woman's cheek had rested. She had never seen her like this, surely. By now, even she was moderately rattled by the situation, running her hands through the sand that was defusing this. Her fingers race along her back, she presses her cheek to whatever she could, to whatever Lulu needed. [break][break]

She had never in her life been the doting kind, the kind to care enough to wrap her arms around someone with the intent to heal. But here she was, doing as much as she felt that she could.[break][break]

"You're safe with me, everything is all going to be alright."[break][break]

Waking up next to a woman like Lulu was never dull.[break][break]

But this time, something is different. This time, she, too, had tossed and turned more than usual. There had been a sense of urgency, like one of those nightmares where no matter how far and how fast you thought you were running, you gained no ground. And every time you looked back, your demons just kept getting closer and closer.[break][break]

She'd had nightmares before, ones so vivid and intense that she'd wake up breathless, but she'd never felt one so strongly as this one.[break][break]

Perhaps its because it wasn't quite her own.[break][break]

Sabine wakes up suddenly to the soft sound of crying. Somehow she had slept through the gasp, the jolt of the woman at her side. The cold had seeped beneath the covers, bare skin exposed to the room where it had once been swathed in warmth. It takes her a moment to adjust, to blink away the terrors that had just flashed across her subconscious.[break][break]

Her mouth is dry when she speaks up, seeking out the woman in an attempt to soothe her. She had witnessed Lulu's terrors, but to see her crying was another obstacle entirely. And she knew the mornings were sensitive, to be handled carefully and without interruption.[break][break]

But this time it was different.[break][break]

".. Lulu?"[break][break]

She chooses to be gentle but firm, reaching out to ground her but not to startle. She didn't want the woman to be afraid or to flinch away, but she also had an unreasonably strong urge to do something rather than let her curl in on herself as she had.[break][break]

"I'm right here. I'm right here."[break][break]

And, should Lulu allow, Sabine would curl herself up against the woman's spine, burying her nose in her shoulder.[break][break]

This was what she craved.[break][break]

To be worshipped, to be admired, to be lusted for in the way that Lulu did. It was cruel, maybe, selfish, definitely. But she craved that attention, that adoration, that pedestal she sat upon. Beneath Lulu's dark and mysterious gaze she felt needed, felt wanted, felt whole.[break][break]

She was far from perfect, far from the person that Lulu assumed her to be. Sabine was a sham, in some capacity. While she came from money, came from royalty, bore the blood of ancients and spoke with that stilted Galarian novelty- she was nothing. Just another empty shell like any other person. [break][break]

Hoenn had yet to teach her humility, failed to show her her flaws. She preferred to cover them up with beautiful trinkets, beautiful men and women, beautiful minds.[break][break]

And so when Lulu calls her perfect, Sabine believes it to be true.[break][break]

Their fingers touch for longer than might have been necessary- but there is something magnetic about the woman with the head of golden curls, her eyes molten silver. Something dramatic, something dangerous, something that drew her in like a moth to flame. Hoenn had come with many temptations, many surprises and sources of intrigue and adventure.[break][break]

She had not known passion in the same way she had experienced it since arriving. She had not known freedom in the same way she could see it reflected so blazingly in Skyler's eyes. The woman before her was untethered, wild and unabashed. She had no strings to hold her back, no inhibition, no rhyme or reason that might stop her from walking directly into the ocean.[break][break]

And that much is obvious with the pointed question. With tequila on her breath and mischief in her tone, she pries Sabine wide open with ease. [break][break]

"Hmm.. no- but I could be convinced."[break][break]

The woman's voice sends a shiver down her spine that is unexpected. She hadn't realized how much she longed for that same freedom, that same ability to just be.[break][break]

Not far ahead of them, but swathed in shadow and unseen with the naked eye, Sabine's Frosmoth and pair of Pyroar stalk the water's edge. They happen upon a Drizzile that ultimately succumbs to a frosty kiss. Frozen with an icy wind, the wild Pokemon would be eventually retrieved by the princess for no reason other than the potential to trade it up for something better.[break][break]
