As soon as Zac saw the help wanted notice in Archaeologists Monthly he was on the phone to Kaz.

"-that's right! Moving tables, traps, everything! And it's pretty close to the site we were at!"

"-yeah-"

"-well I assume they connect underground."

"Bodyguards actually, so we can sit back and let the professionals do their-."

"-yeah. Yeah of course, I'm already texting them on my other phone. Tomorrow at 10, is that-?"

"-fantastic, see you then mate."

Zac hung up, grinning like a maniac.

He arrived a whole hour early to the site, and was stretching outside the excavation site when Kaz arrived. As usual, he greeted his partner in crime warmly, and they made their way into the ruins to meet with the head archeologist.

"There have been a few...problems with the dig so far." Said the tanned scientist, whose nametag said Digmaster Dan.
"Let me guess, haunted furniture?" Offered Zac. The big man was buzzing with excitement. "Dart traps? Collapsing ceilings?! SECRET DOORS!"

The scientist cringed at Zac's excited shouts. "Well yes actually, but those aren't the real issue. You see..."

NOTES: What did he find!? TELL ME!!

you would think that haunted furniture would be something that would keep people away from a set of ruins. not to the crazy archeologists that really wanted to dig around there for the thrill of it or for the lost secrets within, not to zac who called him up and was always up for exploring even the most dangerous of places, not even to kazimir who loved the spice of danger whenever it popped up. "hell yeah i'll be there. hopefully we can fight a haunted sofa cushion or something instead of a table.

once at the site kazimir felt like he was running a bit late when he could see everyone else already on site. "sorry sorry, my ride didn't want to bring me any closer." he said as the archeologist and zac started discussing the dangers that were inside of it and kazimir wanted to chime in. "oh oh let me guess. there's some kind of bad pokemon running around down there? ghosts love to hang around old places after all. what we talking about, gengars, chandelures, mimikyus?"

"-yeah! Ghosts would be fan-bloody-tastic. I've been hoping for a rematch," Zac chimed in, the pair taking turns cutting off Digmaster Dan.
A few seconds passed, and when neither of them interupted again, Dan continued. "We found a thr-"
"Throw pillow?!" Zac shouted. "Wait,.Why would there be a pillow-"
"-a THRONE ROOM." Dan said loudly, in an effort to be heard. "We found a throne room!"

"Ooooo. For a...pokemon king?"
"What? No! Some monarch of an ancient civilization." Dan said, as he lead them into the excavation pit, which was punctured by a thin vertical shaft that dropped into torch-spotted darkness.
"It's down here. Follow me." Dan said, grabbing hold of a rope that was anchored near the edge of the shaft. He easily rappelled down into the blackness, his boots scuffing rhythmically against the sandstone sides.
"Well come on!" Dan called. "You do know how to climb, don't you?"

"no fooling? a throne room? oh we gotta check this out!" he bumped elbows with zac out of excitement as they watched the archeologists suddenly rappel down a hole. "climbing? oh easy. just don't let gravity weigh ya down man." he winked at zac before taking hold of the rope and suddenly dropping down into the darkness.

taking large leaps down he was speeding his way to the bottom and fiddling with his belt as he released a pokemon, his joltik that latched onto his arm. "hey itty-bitty, give us a light will ya?" with a happy chirp the small spider let out a low voltage discharge of electricity to act like a lightbulb as the group descended. "so some kind of monarch right? didn't know this region even had royalty. thought that was just a galar thing."

"Climbing? oh easy. just don't let gravity weigh ya down man."
Climbing has never been the problem. Climbing is fine. Zac thought, looking over the edge into darkness broken only by Kazimir's quickly fading light. It's the heights i'm not so great with.
"It's not the gravity that i'm worried about mate, it's the...uh, it's the drop."
"Zappa, give us some light would ya?" Zac asked, and his Heliolisk lit the inside of the shaft with a beam of saffron light. Zac climbed down slowly, hand over hand, until he reached the bottom; shaken, but unhurt.
    Zappa skittered down the sides of the shaft after him and down onto the sandy floor of the tunnel. It was quite reminiscent of the tunnel that Zac and Kaz had been in just a few weeks prior.

"What direction is this pointing?" Zac asked, and for the first time Digmaster Dan looked happy to hear from him. "Due East exactly. Isn't that interesting? A lot of the Unovan ruins run East-West too."
    And heading right towards the ruins Kaz and I found. Zac thought. Just from the other direction.
  "The burial chamber is just a short walk."
Zac nodded. "Should we be keeping an eye out for traps?"
    "No, we have disabled the traps, but the problem we have is of a more pokemon oriented nature. It seems the rulers buried here wanted to be well protected even in death."
    "So some kind of monarch right? didn't know this region even had royalty. thought that was just a Galar thing."
    "There will always been royalty no matter where you are in the world. In the case of these ruins, we are looking at a time thousands of years in Hoenn's past, and while you're right there is no royal family here today as there is in Galar, whoever is buried here looks to have filled a similar role to their people."

The group reached the throne room, which was sectioned off with dig tape and tiny flags. However, there was an exit at the far end of the room that seemed to lead to an inner sanctum of some kind.
    "And this is where I leave you two to do your thing. We almost lost Vice-Digmaster Vince when he tried to go through that archway. See the strange patterning?" he asked, pointing to the chunky, slightly-off stones that formed the archway into the next room. "It's actually a pokemon. A Stonjurner. You need to...disperse it so that we can continue." Dan said, and Zac reached for Busta, his Clawitzer. "And once that's cleared, push on into the next room. We heard strange metallic noises coming from inside. That's what Vince was investigating."
    "Don't worry Dan, we'll take it from here." Zac said.

Making their way down wasn't a problem however it was the obstacle that seemed to be giving the digging team trouble that might actually be a problem as it was a Pokemon blocking their way in. A really big one by the looks of things. "so its just that? Seems simple enough if its just the one. Hell I think I got this on my own, so just sit back and watch the show boys." Kazimir said with confidence as he cracked his knuckles while reaching down and tossing a ball from his belt and released his own large creature, a feraligatr that quickly turned around and nuzzled its trainer with affection.

"hey hey c'mon kaiju. we'll play later, but right now why don't ya show that large arch right there how well you can play huh? hit him with a hydro pump to start." With a nod the large gator turned around and gathered water in its jaws and unleashed a powerful stream of water at the stonjurour that lifted its leg to try and block the attack only to get pushed back and against the wall thanks to it. "now hit it up with aqua tail!"

The words of the trainer echoed in the room as the stone pokemon slumped against the wall and struggled to get back on its feet only to be met with a slap of water to its face that knocked it out cold and clattering to the floor with a heavy thud. However it wasn't done there, as the feraligatr took a single superpower punch to the pokemon's body, leaving a crack as it made sure that its opponent was down for the count. "great job kaiju! see?" he exclaimed as he turned to the rest of the group with both trainer and pokemon giving a thumbs up, "told ya we could handle it no problem!"

"Whoa! You make it look easy!" Zac said, looking past Kazimir and at the towering form of Feraligatr. "Got one hell of a tail on ya' too! Way to finish him off."
He looked back to Kaz and nodded in respect. "Nice handling there mate. Lets crack on, yeah?"
Past the toppled entrance, the expansive, gaudy cavern narrowed to a cramped, square tunnel. Or so it seemed. As they pressed on into the darkness, something felt off. Zappa's light felt weak in here. Ineffective, and unable to cut through the gloom as it had before. After a minute of huddled walking in the pressing blackness, they reached...a dead end?
Zac frowned. "There's...somethin' weird goin' on. Check around you Kaz." He scoured the walls, which were covered in faded runes, similar to those at the other site. More carvings of Pokemon, but these ones were all facing the same way. Zac checked a different part of the wall. "They're all facing towards here," he said, pointing to the section of wall where the left-facing and right-facing Pokemon met. "But it's just blank wall. Hmmmm."
Zac looked around again, and noticed that the left hand section of the seam was a perfect mirror of the right. "That's...unusual. Hey Kaz, we haven't seen any other repeating sections have we?"
As he asked, Zac touched the runes on the wall, and his hand went straight through the stone. "Ah!" Zac pulled back.
"It's...an illusion."

Kazimir himself doesn't notice the mirrored walls until Zac points it out, only then could he see that they were in fact mirror images of one another. They even shared the same wear and tear in the same spots it was pretty unsettling. "what the heck...who builds ruins like this?" his question would have to wait as he sees Zac stick his hand right through one of the walls only to prove that it was fake. Kaz did the same thing in order to confirm it and a cold chill ran up his hand as he quickly pulled it out.

"whoa ok...so that's both cool and creepy. if an illusion is still up then whatever making it has to still be up and working. think we should be careful. that said... nothing ventured nothing gained right?" with a grin he suddenly dashed and jumped into the wall with a loud "WAHOO!" and a thud as he landed on the other side of the wall which lead into a room that looked much like the hall way they were with but it looked like it was part of the room with another hall leading somewhere. it was as if the room had been split into two by the illusion!

"okay! think i found our way further in!" he said as he popped his head out from the wall, "c'mon in guys. unless your scaredy meowths."

Zac followed Kaz through the illusory wall and into the corridor beyond. They followed it downhill, and it opened into a massive, ornate room full of treasure! At least, it had been full of treasure.
Statues had been scraped of gold, jewels had been pried from the ceiling, and the ornate furniture had been smashed and cleaned out. Someone had looted the place before them.
Zac let out a cry of shock, and Zappa's light swept the room. But there was no sign of the thief.

"What the hell happened here!" Zac exclaimed as he inspected the ransacked room. "From the look of it this was a treasure room, just like the one in the other ruins, but someone beat us here and stripped it of all the treasure. Digmaster Dan is gonna be furious!"
