The sudden jerk is enough to catch him by surprise. Before he can question or so much as react, he feels her propped up against him. She claimed to have lost her warmth but that’s a lie. She lied to him and it burns. An untouched fire erupts when their lips touch and it drums his heart into overdrive.

How can she be worried about being cold when she ignites his cinders?

“Stupid.”

This is wrong. This is stupid. Fernando reels himself back to the sound of his own heart thumping from being flabbergasted. Hunting prey comes naturally but being taken by surprise leaves his body startled and unready.

Don't shit where you eat.

He’s about to pull away but his conversation with kim cole-essam rings at the back of his mind.

So he doubles down, diving head first into the warmth she claims to have lost.

His cigarette falls down several stories, disintegrating in the wind with the last of his reservations.

It wasn't entirely a lie. Despite the heat of her lips and the burn she leaves behind, she feels cold, hollow. She seeks him out to fill a void, and she isn't even sure it's working.[break][break]

But in the heat of the moment, there is only them. She meets resistance in the form of his surprise, and she, too almost pulls away as a result. They remain in some semblance of limbo as they decide what it is they should do.[break][break]

He breaks from her in order to insult her, and she inhales.[break][break]

And he kisses her back, igniting in her, if only for a moment, the spark she thinks she's lost.[break][break]

He can feel his own criticism commentate on the scene unfolding but he willfully ignores it. The body wants what it wants. The only authority he has to answer to is his own biology and it floods him with only one request: more. He's neck deep in Lilycove's cesspool, vulnerable to her own fragility, crumbling as she whets his appetite and neither seem willing to stop.

A lack of restrain means only one thing, escalation. What Fernando feels isn’t affection or love for Stormy. He doesn’t so much as see her. As far as he’s concerned, she’s nothing more than a warm body, an outlet for his pent up frustrations as his hands run through her hair to cup her head against his.

All she is, is a spare body.

So he treats her as such, affectionate to a tee as he lets his lips wrap around her own, nibbling on her upper lip, clinging.

This is what she wanted, and yet there is a twist in her gut that suggests that she knows this is wrong, that she shouldn't be indulging in him, in this, in whatever the fuck it is they're doing.[break][break]

But his teeth pull at her lip and his tongue swipes her teeth and his hands are wrapped up in her hair. He is warm and firm and comforting when her mind is so fucked up as it is.[break][break]

She doesn't know if she feels for him is affectionate or loving. It almost certainly isn't, because that's not an emotion she's even sure she understands. What she thought had been love had always ended up hurting her.[break][break]

Her hands travel his chest, pulling at his collar. One hand thumbs the length of his jaw, her breath hot and rapid as she meets him each and every time.[break][break]

[attr="class","spiral"]Tonight was supposed to be one of inflection. He deliberately excuses himself from both his duties and routine in order to stew over his own inner turmoil. It’s a time where he’s supposed to be left to his own device, using the dwindling lights as a distraction to sort out his own consciousness. As sure as the winter remains cold, the chill that sneaks past his wrists and ankles is supposed to keep him refreshed, awake enough to feel his own perspire.

But that never happens.

Nothing goes as planned.

He’s caught staring into her eyes, panting as they finally break from their enraptured endearment. Minutes feel overstretched as does their first kiss but he can’t be bothered with the time. It hurts to touch his lips together, smoldering from her touch in a way that transcends physical. Being able to release into her clears his head.

“Feel better?”

Fernando stammers now that he can correct himself. He tugs on his collar to smooth out the crinkles of his coat, turning back to the skyline. Regret engulfs him soon after.

It doesn't feel better, not really. When they finally part to catch their breath, she holds onto his gaze a moment longer. Her lips feel warm, and she's drawn to his and the way he doesn't quite press his own lips together. She reaches up to brush her thumb against his bottom lip, her hand lingers against his cheek but she soon pulls it away.[break][break]

He smooths his jacket and she turns away from him to lean against the railing with her forearms.[break][break]

"Do you?"[break][break]

She still itches with bad intentions and her heart still hammers in her chest. She glances back at him, her expression tired, sultry, stressed. His regret is plain as day, or maybe she's telling herself that what he's expressing is regret.[break][break]

It resonates with her that she doesn't regret - not really.[break][break]

She licks her lip where the worst of his teeth pinched her.[break][break]

He can feel the palpitations tighten in his chest. Color paints his pale face something other than a snow white and he can feel the heat fester. It bothers him without end.

A smoke sounds good right about now. Awkwardly, he fumbles the carton within his pocket, prying the paper lid off to scratch at a spare with his fingernails. This time he promises not to waste half of it, raising the white tip in her direction.

“The fire’s still there,” he comments softly, leaving it for her to light.

She exhales, studying his face, turning to the side to face him.[break][break]

There is warmth in his face that hadn't been there before, and it mirrors the heat in her own. She's fluctuating, her temperature rising and falling with every quiet breath she takes. She watches as he fumbles for his carton, struggles to retrieve one.[break][break]

And then he points the end towards her, speaks softly. Her lips part, her breath hitches. But she reaches forward with her hand to ignite the tip of his smoke. It burns softly, shedding ashes to the cool breeze.[break][break]

Just because the impossible happened doesn’t mean he pivots on demand. She just throws him for a tizzy, nothing more. He lifts the cigarette to his lips and inhales thoroughly. It takes a while for him to feel it seep into his lungs. A disgusting habit, really, but it does the job. Everything returns to normal. Even his beating heart quiets as his body regresses.

[attr="class","spiral"]An obvious lie. There’s no point in pointing it out so Fernando lets the subject die in silence. The only refute that comes to mind will only spur them into bickering. Sometimes it’s better to be the bigger man. She’s vulnerable, he reminds himself.

A draft from Fortree finally settles in and the first signs of snow start to grace the city’s sky. It’s impossible to tell until the first snowflake lands. Fernando pays it no mind as each piece melts on contact. There’s not nearly enough to coat anything but that makes the warm orange tinge of his smoke glow even brighter.
