It has become somewhat of a habit, their late night walks around the ashen Fallarbor streets. Sometimes the dogs are with them, but sometimes they are each other's only company. Those nights are his favourite, with companionable silence stretching between them.[break][break]

Fallarbor is cooler, at night, though ash still drifts from Mt. Chimney to settle on their clothes and in their hair. It's one of the reasons for the bathhouse on the edge of town; it provides a quiet spot for travelers to rinse off the grime of travel before moving on. It's less popular with the locals, and Gavin's never been there at all, but they see a surge of business during each new year among the superstitious looking to start off fresh in more ways than one.[break][break]

Gavin will never admit to being superstitious, but he does pause upon noticing the glow in the windows.[break][break]

"Ah, look, they're open even at this time." His surprise is genuine. It was unusual. "Maybe some kind of New Years special, but it doesn't look like they've got business now."[break][break]

His suit jacket is dusted with ash, and he reaches up to brush some from Emma's hair.[break][break]

"Could be nice," he muses, shrugging. He's always saying how he wants to get a bigger bath installed at home, but he's never gotten around to it. It would be a luxury to stretch out; more so with Emma at his side. "You up to it, love?"

Emma's attention is not at all on the glow in the window nearby, and she almost doesn't stop at the same time he does. Their walks are almost routine, and his sudden pause breaks that mirage and brings her back to reality, back to him. She hesitates, too, before moving to continue. Although, when he doesn't follow her, she stops to glance back.[break][break]

"Hmm?"[break][break]

She balls her hands into fists to tuck into her jacket, and she approaches the man slowly, crunching gravel beneath her boot. Just as she does, Gavin's hand reaches to brush ash from her hair. She doesn't stiffen, and instead studies his face - however she doesn't return the gesture.[break][break]

Instead, her golden eyes follow his, settling on the hot springs bath. She hums quietly, though she doesn't seem particularly enthused on the idea, not in the same way Gavin is. He shrugs in her peripheral, and she glances back at him, measuring his reaction and, ultimately, relenting.[break][break]

"Reliving our virtual reality hot spring meeting, are we? Well... at least this time I'm not made of metal, or masculine."[break][break]

Emma isn't as enamored with the idea as Gavin himself, but it does not bother him. That she's willing to try new experiences — from relaxing in a spring to dancing together in a club — was enough to satisfy him. She may have had more experience than him with relationships in a purely physical sense, but Gavin was more well-versed with blending in, being a regular couple.[break][break]

A soft, genuine smile, the likes of which others never get to see, dons light across his lips as he takes her hand.[break][break]

"Mm, thankfully," he agrees, his other hand caressing her waist and sliding up under her shirt. "I'd miss your curves, the softness of your skin..."[break][break]

He runs his nails along the curve of her breast, punctuating his words. His smile is devious, now. Though late at night, they're still in public; the gesture carries the thrill of the forbidden. He kisses her neck, making a face at the taste of ash upon her skin. Chuckling softly, he draws back and tugs her toward the door.[break][break]

The man working the desk seems surprised when the chimes above the door tinkle softly, looking up from his phone to squint at the couple from behind a pair of glasses. After a brief exchange of words and payment, the employee directs them through a door to the showers, which then lead out into the springs beyond. The hot spring is mostly enclosed, covered over to prevent contamination from the falling ash. At night, small lanterns cast light upon the water, which lies empty and waiting. After stripping down and rinsing ash from his hair and skin, Gavin settles into the hot water with a relieved sigh.[break][break]

"They did well with VR, but nothing beats the real thing."

The way he looks at her instills warmth in her chest, something that never fails to surprise her. But what surprises her more is the boldness of his action and the breath he steals from her as a result. The man pulls her close, his warm hand slipping under her shirt to caress her curves and tease her skin. Her hand rises to press against his chest, and hunger flashes in her eyes when his exploration brushes the curve of her breast. [break][break]

Even despite the cover of night and the quiet surrounding them, his action spurs the rapid beat of her heart. [break][break]

He leans in to kiss her neck and she exhales slowly, focusing on absorbing all of him, even despite the acrid smell of the ash falling on them softly. But he pulls away, taking her hand in his, and Emma finds herself trailing after him willingly. The woman is fascinated, charmed, wholly smitten with the man in front of her. [break][break]

It doesn't take either of them long to get situated in their own private bath, and it seems that the area has been virtually unused all night. More than likely, tourists had chosen to visit Lavaridge or even Lilycove rather than worry about Fallarbor's unwelcoming climate. She didn't mind, it meant she and Gavin had all the time in the world, alone, to relax.[break][break]

Gavin strips and makes his way into the pool first, and Emma takes her time following, careful to remove as much of the ash from her skin and hair as she could. [break][break]

"You're a natural, Gavin. Have you done this before?"[break][break]

She stares at him with an arched brow, her expression lazy and teasing.[break][break]

Emma steps from the shadow and sanctuary of the changing rooms, and Gavin's gaze feasts shamelessly upon her figure. There is no one around but them, stripped down to their skin, lantern light sparkling off the damp of his chest. An old scar below his heart marks a path where no hair will grow, a failed attempt on his life.[break][break]

"Bathed?" he returns, his tone light. "Yes, I try to do so regularly, as a matter of fact."[break][break]

He knows that's not what she means.[break][break]

He lifts a hand from the water to twine his fingers with hers and gently pull her down next to him. Much as their closeness makes his heart thrum like a hummingbird in his chest, he will not despoil public property by acting on his thoughts. He wraps an arm around her, instead, taking comfort in her presence as the last vestiges of the nightmares that had driven them from bed fade from his mind. It was easier to cope, after meeting Emma. Love was no cure, but a soothing balm against his troubles.[break][break]

"I've been to a hot spring, but never this one," he says at last, more seriously. "The Hero's Bath in Circhester is popular, since it's so cold there."[break][break]

Hot water works wonders on the ache of his muscles, and he closes his eyes. This was nice.[break][break]

"We've been so busy, I feel we haven't caught up in a week." His nails scratch lightly against her skin. "Had any interesting work?"

Emma shakes her head, only mildly exasperated by his attempted tease. But his hand reaching out of the water to pull her in is well-received, as she lets her fingers slide between his and allows the man to pull her into the warmth of the water and of his arms.[break][break]

She sighs, immediately impressed with the relaxing quality of the heat against her skin. It flushes her face and she closes her eyes because of it, truly letting the water pull apart her worries and leave her bare.[break][break]

With his arm around her, Emma leans against him, one hand brushing the scar below his heart. Her nails lightly scratch against the ivory patch, moving around to his back so that they might hold each other loosely.[break][break]

"It is, indeed, very cold there."[break][break]

Emma sighs audibly, a satisfied noise of total relaxation, when his nails drag against her skin. She tilts her chin toward him, opening her eyes to watch him, though his own are closed.[break][break]

"Nothing out of the ordinary, other than the woman who's been tailing me the past week or so. She thinks I'm unaware of what it is she's doing."[break][break]

There is a mild, subtle snort from Emma's nose, but nothing further. [break][break]

Emma's nails tickle against scarred skin, and Gavin shivers under her pleasant ministrations. The encounter in which he'd received the wound had been a close call, and the one who'd marked him had not survived.

Gavin's eyes open slowly, something dangerous brewing in their amber depths. "You're being followed?"

Emma Wolfe is a Rocket Beast, more than capable of handling herself; Gavin's is less concerned about her safety than of the implications. Who was tailing her, and for what purpose? How much did they know of Rocket? Of Emma? There's a smouldering intensity to the underboss as his muscles tense anew.

"Did you recognize them?"

The sharp edges of anger in his expression soften at the steadiness of her gaze, though ire burns anew as the affiliation of the mystery stalker is revealed.

"Wait. A Rocket was following you?"

Gavin's nostrils flare. Certain Rockets come immediately to mind, though he dismisses the notion just as quickly. He was an underboss, for Arceus' sake. If the orders came from above, they'd be coming from Walsh himself. He trusted her with Alfric, Gavin reasons, no way he'd be suspicious after she pulled that off.

"Could she be a League plant? If she tries anything, Emma, you've got my backing in whatever you do to her." The words radiate malice. He'd kill the bitch himself if he wasn't sure Emma Wolfe could handle her. "Hell, even if she doesn't try anything. Who does she think she is?"

Gavin's rage is apparent, and Emma finds her hand rising from the water to caress his cheek. Her thumb brushes against his cheekbone, water dripping down her arm and elbow. She is thoughtful, but her brows crease together as she studies him.[break][break]

"The League has no reason to believe.."[break][break]

She trails off, because she is not even fully convinced of her own statement. It was possible, she supposed, especially given the confidence in Gavin's own suggestion. But she shakes her head slowly in response to his vivid concern.[break][break]

"Gavin."[break][break]

She holds him steady in her gaze, her thumbnail drawing against his cheek.[break][break]

"I'm fine. You know that my.. reputation.. is not the most satisfying with old members. There is nothing to worry about, and you know that."[break][break]

"Fuck them." The words are spat with a venom rarely present in Gavin's tone; beneath her gentle caress, Emma would feel the tension in his jaw. "How many times do they expect—?"

He cuts himself off with a sharp intake of breath. Despite his anger, his words are hissed rather than shouted.

"No," he decides, "it doesn't matter what they think, nothing gives them the authority to follow you. To have you followed."

He hadn't clawed his way up through the ranks to be kept in the dark; Gavin kept tabs on the internal happenings of Rocket as best he could.

"I know you can take care of yourself, love." His harsh tone softens with the pet name. "I'm not worried, I'm furious."

There is nothing that Gavin could do to hide his emotion from her, even if he tried. Of course, he isn't trying - she can feel the jump of his veins beneath his skin, his jaw tightening, his teeth grinding against each other. No amount of stroking or caressing or reassuring coaxes him out of it, and her eyes wash over him patiently as he hisses, as he struggles to contain his anger, as he composes himself.[break][break]

"It will always be this way, Gavin. I will always be proving myself, over and over again. Walsh might trust me, you might trust me, but that doesn't mean the rest of Rocket will."[break][break]

There is no smile to grace her features, and she remains cold, unreadable, indifferent. Despite the broil of emotion beneath her lovers surface, she is calm, collected, indifferent.[break][break]

"But none of that matters. Your faith in me is the only trust I need."[break][break]

He states that he is furious, and she can see that, even despite the way his voice softens. She lets her hand slide down his chin, to worry at the corner of his mouth and settle on his shoulder.[break][break]

Eventually, Emma Wolfe's unerring calm seems to reach him. Like a balloon deflating, he huffs a frustrated sigh and lets the tension leech from his shoulders as he takes a deep breath.

"It matters," he disagrees, but shifts to press his forehead against hers and grip the back of her neck, "but I will always have faith in you."

He kisses her, and the remnants of his anger can be felt in the force behind it. His nails press against skin, biting. That they are in a public place is the only thing that stops him from going further.

He settles back into the water, taking her hands in his.

"Rocket is changing, Em. Slowly, but surely, it is. One day it'll be different. Promise." There would never be proper words to describe his gratitude for her return. She'd came back, for him. "You remember Chu-e Choi and jayden cross?"

When he huffs, she breathes out with him. Slow, calculated, quiet. His forehead presses against hers and, for a moment, she watches him. But her eyes eventually close and the bite of his nails at the back of her neck, the pressure and the emotion behind it helps to ground her.[break][break]

Even now his words have more meaning for her than she lets on. The fierceness in his kiss and the taste of his anger still fading away is potent, and yet she doesn't pull away. There are things that she fears, but he has never been one of them, not directly.[break][break]

"I believe you."[break][break]

But even still, that was a dream she had not yet set her eyes on nor felt for herself. She had seen a glimpse of it in the passion behind Cadis' words, and in the honor that Gavin kept close to his chest. But she still held doubt for some of the people within the organization, their intents and their ambitions.[break][break]

Gavin pulls her out of those thoughts, however. With his hands curled around hers, she blinks her eyes open. Brows come together subtly at the mention of two Rocket-affiliated individuals.[break][break]

"Of course. Why?"[break][break]
