A large, modular, general-purpose military tent stands exactly where the coordinates point. Inside, a tall young man awaits from the other end of the room, his arms folded behind his back. His gazes slowly moves away from the many maps spread over the long table set between yourselves to settle on your own.

Three light bulbs hang off the spine holding up the tent, their incandescent yellow light working in tandem with the young man's cap to cast a strong shadow over his gaze.

It's hard to recognize him through all the posturing, pomp and formality of military apparel, not to mention the uncharacteristic seriousness that permeates his gaze, but this is indeed .

"Greetings, challenger. As Mauville City's Gym Leader, I welcome you to my installations. I expect perfoh'mance-" He began to say, his diction slipping back into accent halfway through his delivery, bringing his little, prepared speech to a complete halt.

After a moment of silence, he sighed, deeply, before reaching up to tip further down his cap.

"... Thanks for yer help, Zac. It means a lot." He said in a mutter. "I didn't even know who else to ask."

Plucking his cap right off his head, the youth laid on the table, his slicked and stylized hair out of place as he leaned forward and brought his other hand to the table, revealing a docket he had been hiding behind his back.

He slipped it across the table with a swipe of his arm.

"For this test, ya'll be playin' the role of a stealth operative." Doug said as he dropped down tiredly onto the chair behind him. "All the information ya need is there."

OPERATION NINJASK

Map of the Installations.

CHOICES

  • You may sneak into the installations through either the red or blue spots marked on the map.

LOADOUT

Choose one (1):
  • High-Tech Scope: Increases the range of the Shoot action by 1 Square.
  • Smokebomb/Pokedoll: A single use, free get-out-of-jail card for a failed roll. Preparation and a little luck pays off in dividends.
  • X-Speed: The Move action can now cover 2 Squares per use, should you desire it. [1 time use]

VICTORY CONDITION

Locate and eliminate the enemy Leader.

FAILURE CONDITION

  • All pokemon are killed in action.
  • is killed in action.
  • Enemy Leader escapes.

DETAILS & CONDITIONS

  • You've 3 minutes (10 rounds) to locate and eliminate the enemy Leader.
  • You are allowed 3 Pokemon of choice.

SUMMARY

Operative , you are tasked with eliminating the terrorist Leader. Intel claims they'll be visiting the facility at a specific time of night. You are advised to prioritize stealth, but how you handle the mission is left to your discretion.

REMEMBER THAT:
  • The terrorist group has set a number of soldiers as watchmen around the perimeter.
  • The skies are constantly monitored, so flight should be kept to extremely short distances, if utilized at all.
  • It’s been confirmed that Growlithe are being implemented as security measures. These are pokemon with an extremely acute sense of smell- but the terrorists’ batch has relatively poor discipline. Handle with care.
  • Terrorist soldiers are armed with assault rifles and have access to radio communication. However, they wear helmets for protection and face coverings intended to protect their identities, both of which limit their visibility and dim their hearing. Keep this in mind, but do not underestimate them or their senses.
  • Remember that pokeballs are a thing. No guard is ever truly alone- and they'll surely employ their pokemon if sufficiently suspicious or alerted.

GAMEPLAY MECHANICS

There’s elements of Choose-your-own-story and an economy of actions.

Missions are timed. There’s a limited number of rounds for the player to achieve the mission.

Player’s have an economy of Two (2) Actions per round. Their choices are:

  • Move [1 adjacent square, provided no insurmountable obstacles; All movement is stealthy]
  • Action (Act)
  • Shoot [2 bullets TOTAL, target can be up to 4 squares away, provided no cover/obstacles]

The player may choose to not Act and Move Twice instead. Alternatively, they may forego to Move at all and Act twice. Some actions may necessarily require both.

ACTION & CHOICE

ACTION
Every round, the player is free to decide what they'll do and how they'll handle their current circumstances, keeping in mind their economy of two (2) actions.

An action must be performed by either the trainer or one of their pokemon. Whoever it is that performs it will be subject to the consequences of failure.

The DM will look upon the actions taken, judge their level of risk and reward on a [Low (15) | Mid (45) | High (75)] scale for each, and then determine if the result of their roll was enough.

An action will succeed regardless of whether the roll fails or not. However, when a roll fails, the cost is the pokemon performing them. Sometimes, however...

CHOICE
Sometimes, players will be given 2 to 3 choices to make based on their previous action. These choices are context dependent, and generally offer both something to gain and lose. Choices don't cost action economy.

"Shoe's on the other foot now, ay?" Zac said, wrapping the fresh Gym Leader in a hug. "I'll always be here to help ya out, mate." Zac said. Doug had come a long way from being the scrappy youth that Zac had met one night in Slateport. Now he was running his own military camp! And who better to be in charge, honestly.
Doug seemed nervous, but nerves were natural. He would overcome those early jitters, Zac had gone through the same thing.
"Stealth you said? Hmmm." Zac reached into his bag, pulling out 3 Pokeballs. "Okay, I think I'm ready to go. I'll start at Red. Seems the most on brand after all, and gimme that Poke Doll."

ROUND 1

You sneak into the installations through a subtly dug up hole running under the wall, hidden behind bushes. The slow, methodical work of your fellow spies through several days, perhaps.

As you enter, you find yourself surrounded by greenery. Tall grass that would reach up to about your knees standing up, as well as shrubbery to hide behind. You can see the canopies of trees planted atop elevated ground around you.

Two paths stretch before you. You think you can hear someone nearby, though you cannot see them.

You can hear the familiar sound of barking to the north.

What do you do?

"Something's comin from the North," Zac said, crouching down. Vigo the Galvantula looked up at him, puffy yellow mandibles pawing at the air. "You're going to surprise them buddy. Head North, stick to the trees, and when they round that corner use Discharge, alright?"
The bright yellow spider clicked in agreement and padded off into the forest, where it blended with the deep shadows and Autumn leaves.

Move - 1 North
Act - Use Discharge to stun the guard and Growlithe when they get close enough.

ROUND 2

You advanced after detecting movement ahead, and chose to to immediately go on the offensive and eliminate the threat.

There's certainly merit to eliminating a seemingly lone guard, but only time will tell if it was the appropriate choice. However thought out it may or may not be however, luck proves to not be in your favor.

As your Galvantula deftly makes its way through the trees, an unfortunate breeze carries through the forest from east to west. As the wind passes, the approaching guard's Growlithe's raises his nose in the air and sniffs deeply, its gaze narrowing towards the trees.

A sharp bark releases from his throat as he turns his gaze sharply in Galvantula's direction, a fiery blaze coating his maw and teeth as his muscles coil under him-!

SUDDEN CHOICE!

You can almost see what's happening in slow motion. Your keen mind can tell how things will go if you do nothing.

Will you:
  • Do nothing. The guard and Growlithe will be taken out, but so will Galvantula.
  • Order Galvantula to retreat; You'll keep your soldier, but... The Guards will definitely be alert to your presence.
  • Pokedoll: Oh yeah, you did choose this for your loadout, didn't you? Growlithe's love toys.

Zac felt the wind change. The shifting breeze sent prickles along his neck. There was a throaty, burning bark from around the Northern pathway, and he frowned. "That ain't good."
The Growlithe had caught their scent, but this fight wasn't over. Zac sprinted forward and, with a titanic throw, hurled the PokeDoll at where the guard and his Pokemon were standing.
"Fetch!" Zac whispered, as the adorable plush Snom soared through the air and landed near the Growlithe. It was all up to fate and Vigo now.

Option 3: PokeDoll!

ROUND 3

Your foresight came in handy quickly. The Snom doll flies through the air in a perfect arc and lands at the feet of the Growlithe just as it prepares to launch itself towards your Galvantula, the fierce expression in its face practically blinking away as its eyes shifted from the spider's general direction towards the cute little doll.

There's a moment of contemplation, where instinct and training butt heads over the proper course of action- it's a short moment, but it's more than enough.

For his part, the guard gasps as he notices the doll land at the pokemon's feet, his reaction to slow.

"Don't th-!"

The Discharge reaches them and silences the guardsman, who bites his tongue as his body convulses momentarily, before collapsing onto his back on the floor just as the Growlithe lurched forward, face planting on the dirt.

Guard, 'dead'. Growlithe, 'dead'.

Galvantula, Alive. Perfect Victory.

With the guard and guard dog out of the picture, you are free to resume your advance. It is an uphill walk, and as soon as the earth levels out, you can see much more clearly into the distance. Yet again, more or less two paths stand before you.

If you keep going northward, you can see in the distance were greenery ends and gravel begins. You can faintly see warehouses and vehicles as well. Probably the base proper.

On the other hand, westward you can see what appears to be a tall warehouse. Not much else, though one can surmise going beyond it would lead to the path you didn't take earlier.

What do you do?

"Damn close one," Zac said, surveying the fried forms of the guard, Growlithe, and PokeDoll. He looked around, taking stock of the paths heading North and West.
"A warehouse! The boss might be hiding in there," Zac said heading West. He sent out his other two Pokemon. Erin the Incineroar jogged along as Zac's side, and Mei the Kecleon scuttled along the edge of the trees, maintaining her camouflage. Vigo brought up the rear, compound eyes alert for any signs of movement or danger.

ROUND 4

The distance between you and the warehouse quickly becomes nothing as you rush through the forest towards it. Before long, you and your pokemon all stand before the structure.

You think you can maybe see the silhouette of a guard in the far distance... He's standing underneath some light, staring in another direction. For now, it doesn't seem like he'll look your way.

Back to the warehouse...

You cannot see any signs of lights from the outside, but as you approach closer yet, you think you can hear... several voices inside. There's talking; not hushed, but not particularly loud either. If you and your pokemonlook around exhaustively, you'll eventually find several ways to see inside. From a few tall windows on the warehouse's to a large glass piece on the rooftop.

A rather stereotypical scene of Four (4) guards playing cards and shirking their duties is playing out beyond the walls. You cannot smell it, but you or your pokemon perhaps can see a few bottles of alcohol around the box they are using as a playing table.

None of them look important or distinct enough to be the Terrorist Leader; they certainly aren't acting like one, either.

Curious how careless they are, given that your Incineroar can smell the faint, familiar smell of gunpowder along the windows and ventilation.

You think you might recognize one of the items being used as betting fodder from the loadout options from earlier, though the memory's vague...

The only growlith around seems to be sleeping by one of the guards' feet.
What do you do?

"Okay Vigo, time to make up for that bungle earlier, yeah?" Zac whispered to his Galvantula. The spider clung to the warehouse wall, looking at him sideways. It clicked its mandibles at him, sending out little sparks. "Don't give me that! Tell them!" He hissed, pointing to the ground of distracted guards. "Head up into the rafters and drop 'em a surprise." The Galvantula crawled up and away, looking for a perfect ambush spot.

    2KIcp2d2

"Mei, you here?" Zac asked the empty air. To his left, a patch of jagged grass shimmered, coalescing into a cross-eyed reptile. "There you are. Okay great. Head through these trees and scout the other side, yeah?" Zac said, pointing behind them, to the North. Mei faded into the background, and disappeared. Maybe. It was hard to tell.

Vigo the Galvantula is sneaking into the warehouse to drop a big Electroweb on the guards.

Mei the Kecleon is sneaking North to scout.

Erin the Incineroar is sticking close. If shit goes sideways she and Zac are ready to bust in.

ROUND 5

Your Galvantula's ambush upon the unsuspecting soldiers goes off without a hitch. A tapestry of electrified webs descends upon the large group, enveloping and paralyzing them all before they've a chance to scream in alarm.

4 Soldiers and a Growlithe, dead.

Upon the table, you find 1x X-Speed that had been used as a chip for betting.

Any further inspection would reveal nothing you hadn't already gathered; your target was not there, and the smell of gunpowder was ever present, though further inspection would reveal these to be fireworks, not high-grade explosives.

Thankfully.

That's one victory.

Now for one unfortunate defeat.

Your Kekleon follows your commands and goes north alone. Her natural cammouflaging abilities, careful approach, and instructions to merely observe, would have made this an easy task...

But unfortunately, a predator that hunted not by sight, but by scent, had been awaiting near the path. And the wind turned against her without a single, sweeping gale.

An Arcanine's roar rocked the night as it sprung to Action, springing at Extreme Speeds towards the camouflaged Kekleon, a fiery blaze coursing through its body as it crashed with a mighy boom unto the other pokemon, generating a large, explosive mushroom cloud.

Your pokemon manages to retreat and escape during the Arcanine's moment of weariness and vertigo following its Flare Blitz, barely stumbling back to you to report her findings.

Before the Arcanine attacked her, she saw a vehicle moving west, and looking to be going south next. She also saw Two guards stationed there, as well as her attacker.

Her mission complete... her eyes fluttered closed.

Mei has died.

You've acquired 1x X-Speed.
Kekleon has fainted.
North sector guards are alerted.

OPERATION NINJASK

Map of the Installations. Operative survived. Galvantula survived. Incineroar survived. Soldier 1 survived. Soldier 2 survived. Arcanine survived (injured).

Kekleon has died. Warehouse Band (4x Soldiers, 1x Growlithe) have died.

Vehicle is moving West, then South.

    Absolute disaster.
Mei's camouflage broke and she collapsed, scales smoking, just outside the warehouse. "Mei! What happened!" Zac shouted, wrapping the burning reptile in his arms. Grass withered around the pair as life poured back into the reptile. It may be a war game, but Zac wasn't taking any chances with long lasting damage. Especially after his talk with .
Mei relayed the details of the enemy positions before collapsing, and Zac solemnly returned her. "Thanks mate," Zac whispered, berrating himself as he tucked the Pokeball into his inner pocket. Idiot! We should have stuck together. There was no reason to split up. It's too dangerous here with those Growlithe. I can't let it happen again.
"You did a great job. It won't go to waste." Zac said, before turning to Vigo and Erin, his two remaining Pokemon. "We can't go North. Too risky."
Instead, they headed West, and Zac spotted a guard near the tree line. Brambles swirled around his feet, growing and dying as he subconsciously pulled healing energy in to heal the already 'dead' reptile. Gotta be cautious. Zac said. He reached into his Golden Explorer's Jacket, patting Mei's Pokeball  before reaching down to pull out his gun from another of the inner pockets.
He only had 2 bullets, but there was no use holding onto them if everyone was going to be dead before the boss.
Zac lined up the shot. For Mei.

ROUND 6

Boom. Headshot.

"Sh*t! What the fu-" Screams the guard as he reels forward, rubbing the back of his head while hissing before looking at his hand... which was covered in red paint. "Goddamn it!"

With a groan, the man unceremoniously dropped to the floor, 'dead'.

... Anyway, a second after that, a booming sound rocked the the night. In the far distance, your pokemon see a blur rush through the trees and grass, grinding to a stop.

The Arcanine gaze immediately snaps towards your group in the far distance, before reeling its head back and ROARing!

The sound thunders through the entire camp.

Whether they know it's because of you, or have simply been alerted by the Arcanine to something, the whole of the Camp is now alert.

Furthermore, with its Extreme Speed, the Arcanine will be within attacking range of you and your party within mere seconds.

SUDDEN CHOICE!

THESE CHOICES WILL NOT CONSUME YOUR ACTION ECONOMY.

You cannot see beyond what lies in front of you. Advancing any further will lead you to open ground- but who knows what awaits there? The camp has only just been alerted, but who's to say there might not be quick soldiers about? Not to mention... You can faintly hear the engine of a vehicle somewhere...

However, playing it safe is not an option so long as Arcanine is hot on trail...

Will you:

  • Take out the Arcanine? [Requires Pokemon and Roll. High Risk.]
  • Distract the Arcanine. [Requires Pokedoll.]
  • Distract Arcanine with a pokemon.[Requires Pokemon. Requires roll each turn they distract Arcanine. Medium Risk. ]
  • Distract Arcanine Faster. [Consumes X-Speed. Requires Pokemon. Requires roll every other turn they distract Arcanine. Low Risk.]

OPERATION NINJASK

Map of the Installations.

STATUS REPORT

-Guard eliminated. 1x Bullet left.
-ARCANINE utilizes Extreme Speed to move two squares. ARCANINE utilizes Roar, drawing attention from camp.
-You can hear the engine of a vehicle.

The guard dropped like a sac of wet Minccino's, but even fake guns aren't quiet. From the North there was a sound like a sonic boom as something huge and furry rushed towards them. The blur rounded the tree line and the solidified into a Pokemon. An Arcanine. Massive, maned, and furious. it roared at the group, and Zac covered his ears.
Run! Was his first thought, but it was quickly followed up by the image of being chased by this beast and harried all the way into the waiting guns of the enemy. No. We attack. Together. Zac tossed the X-Speed to Incineroar. She downed it in one gulp before crushing the bottle. "Erin, Throat Chop! Shut up that pup!"

1. Attack
2. Distract
3. Distract Faster

4. Attack Faster: X-speed+Throat Chop on Arcanine.
Incineroar carried Zac 1 East and 1 North (bringing us next to Arcanine) and then uses Throat Chop.

ROUND 7

Your boldness is rewarded... momentarily.

The Arcanine gags audibly as the Incineroar karate chops it in the throat, its movement stopped in its tracks as it tries to breath. A short scuffle ensues, and ultimately the Arcanine is K.Od, its body flying back. A surprised yelp comes from further north in response. You can't see them from where you stand, but you can practically feel the guard.

And he won't be the only one to see your handywork, at this rate. All around the base, lights are turning on and the sounds of activity grow louder and louder.

The sound of an engine is still in the air, and you can definitely hear the voices of at least two guards coming from the north.

OPERATION NINJASK

STATUS REPORT

-ARCANINE eliminated. X-Speed consumed.
-A guard notices Arcanine being taken. He does not see you yet, however.
-You can hear the engine of a vehicle still, despite being farther away. It must have gotten closer.
-You can feel the activity in the base beginning to pick up. The soldiers are alerted and beginning to pour out!
