it could not hear it could not see but it could feel. the cave felt writhing from within. it's already icey walls having more and more formation. increasing and decreasing. its temperature changing rapidly from cold to hot to cold to hot, trying to adjust itself with its icy winds that came through the hollow walls. somehow, it shook some of the extra dangerous ice from its walls. it didn't need this new weight as the water swelled inside. it's levels changing and disrupting. through holes and tunnels it crept into pokemon's homes. an unwelcome development. the cave needed those pokemon as they needed the cave. for safety. for growth. feet scrambled through its tunnels as pokemon evacuated. though through the flooding and water moving it dug out even more than just pokemon for pokemon sake. buried treasures came forward, dislodged from walls and hiding places. from pokemon's hoards that had been hidden away. most of it being sticks and useless rocks. bits of fluff from nests and the like. but one thing, particularly useful to a competitor, a shining blue gem that was dislodged from its hiding place. the cave felt it flow free from the hold it had on it. out of its cavern walls and to the shore of the lake.

Skyler's hand sneakily plucked a stray sandwich from its unlikely perch atop a nearby rock formation. It was sort of soggy, sort of icy - and, the captain decided as she unhesitatingly took a large bite out of it, actually quite delicious. Like a crunchy ice cream with a little bit of earthiness to it - though that was probably the bits of rock in there.

She'd missed the whole tea break, too busy enthusiastically wrestling with in an attempt to show off her obvious muscle superiority. The captain might've felt smug if she'd won, but unfortunately the results had proved inconclusive. Which just meant that she'd have to invite him over sometime for another wrestling match.

Maybe she'd invite too. That guy was packing some serious muscle.

Distracted by the thought of rippling muscles, her next step nearly had her tumbling ass over tea kettle. If not for the flipper that quickly slammed into her torso, Skyler would've probably found herself at the bottom of...

"Those better not be ghosts." Skyler curiously peered down at the dancing lights below, apparently circling each other. "What d'you reckon, Oceanide?"

Her response was given in the shape of a PSYCHIC, swiftly holding the captain in its grasp and lowering her down gently. The sarcastic thanks that floated up from the descending human had Lapras snorting, though she followed promptly right after her trainer.

Floating cautiously closer would reveal not ghosts - but water, its surface reflecting the glare of Skyler's flashlight. Though the captain soon discovered it was surprisingly shallow. Enough for her to walk instead of swim, unlike what she'd initially thought.

Fearlessly diving into the depths of the dark chamber, Captain Dross found herself stumbling over some long-rusted trap, her fingers feeling the familiar shape under the dark waters - along with the bones of an unfortunate aquatic creature resting dejectedly within. "You'll do." Smiling smugly, the blonde yanked a small metal piece for herself easily enough.

The sound of crashing waves took her by surprise. "So you are connected to the ocean..." Stepping boldly forward, Skyler started to notice the sand that crunched silently under her boots. It stubbornly followed her all the way to the far wall of the cave, though no entrance was found.

Cursing profoundly, Skyler noticed the water level steadily rising. "'Nide, we have to go. Fast." The Lapras immediately pulled her captain to her back, swimming against the rushing tide expertly. Darkness pressed in, and what would've been easy for the captain took more time than she'd expected.

Nearly too long.

They managed to get out of the darkness just before it flooded with ocean water.

glitch sighed as he began his own search for his gemstone. he had sent twizzler out on the search but instead he had brought back this weird limestone. though as something unique it was pretty good. no limestone was formed from the same sort of creatures in every place it was formed. the limestone made here would be completely different from the limestone formed in another cave. so he couldn't really get mad at the zweilous for it. so instead of thinking about how he was still doing hard work he began to think about how he was pretty sure that himself was the biggest gem in the place. next to him of course. he had it all. abs. arms. a great head of hair. plus he was tall and probably super strong.

thinking about a wet t-shirt contest involving zac and zac alone made this entire thing easier. a white shirt soaked by cold water. that was how you got the good outline after all. with cold water. that let you see everything through the shirt. especially with the natural lights in here. rippling lights that would glance off his glistening torso. absolutely perfect. so distracted by thinking about it he almost missed the glimmering yellow gem that was about to be washed into the water. the natural light that he had imagined shimmering across zac's chest made the gem glimmer nicely. wiping it off on a dry spot on his jacket he was absolutely sure this would be the best thing he could find here.

kyle stares blankly (1) in a daze at the gym leader as he carefully (2) mentions each detail of the round's result. traits he never thought he'd see in him suddenly (3) manifests: bulging muscles that steadily (4) ripple with every movement, big, strong arms that can lift him up easily (5), those words of encouragement that effectively (6) tells him that he did good, that bright smile that effectively (7) lifts up the mood... he's actually (8) like , but tall.

he supposed noah still gets bonus points for being abnormally (9) cute above all things.

he abruptly (10) wakes up from his daydreaming as the gym leader gracefully (11) finishes the closing remarks, kindly (12) bestowing him with some kind of bonus while the head scientist generously (13) gives his pokemon matching bandanas. a mixture of red [1] and orange [2], unsurprisingly similar to the badge's color scheme, make it pop against the duo's light blue [3] and white [4] coloration.

"looks like we're going to have to go now." kyle cracks his knuckles as he gets ready. "i know the perfect place to find them."

---

emphraim walks through a secret tunnel that his trainer had brought him and the glaceon to. ingeniously (14) forming an ice bridge with their ice-type moves was an easy way to get around the massive labyrinth of a cave, with sheer cold easily (15) transforming water from its liquid state to solid.

the tides luckily (16) bring the water levels in a just enough depth for it to graciously (17) reveal a shortcut to a cavern. dark blue [5] waters from the depths of the sea violently (18) crash against the piece of land that led to the secret tunnel, bringing the fairy-type to be mindful of its steps.

he was told to look for rocks, but they all look the same to him. pebbles {1}, boulders {2}, rocks {3}, stones {4}... he's not sure if there's any difference.

he could feel grains of the yellow [6] sand shifting through the digits of his paws. black [7] starts to replace every other color in his peripheral, but a gentle (19) touch of his trainer on his head immediately (20) calms him down for a bit. the scent of the salty sea causes his nose to forcibly (21) wrinkle and the taste of musky air that wafts through the roofs of his mouth urge him to effectively (22) go wild.

the ninetales wanted out, but the sound of the wild (23) flapping of wings overhead gets his thoughts out of the gutter.

"ephraim! glaceon! on the ready," he hears his trainer call out.

in the confines of a cave, the ice-type's ability get to be in their full effectiveness. a close space brings no exit to the relentlessness to huge area-of-effect attacks, and as soon as the snow warning activates, the ninetales feels his own smugness take into effect. formulating a nasty plot, icicles form all around the tunnel's surfaces as a blizzard from his companion flushes out any unnecessary wild pokemon.

---

three individuals rush out of a dark cave in a hurry. a trainer carries a glaceon by his arms that obviously (24) exhausted itself while a ninetails takes care of their rear. a quick use of aurora veil from the latter, followed up with barrier from the former, temporarily (25) seals off an exit. taking advantage of a cave's narrow corridors gives the trio a clean entry to the chamber.

"here we are," the trainer announces. his voice reverberates throughout the chamber. "ice rock room!"

the secret tunnel, for the most part, was one of the only entrance to the chamber at the moment. the tides make the lower entrances unable to be accessed while the ones above were unreachable without great efforts.

the center of the chamber was the focal point of the room. the cave, undisturbed for a long period of time, finally gets activity for the first time in days, only to be shaken from the top down for a treasure hunt.

---

"we got used pokeballs for metal..."

kyle picks up one of the few garbage that can be found at the end of the shoal cave where rare pokemon frequented. he has once dropped a huge amount of pokeballs trying to get one specific pokemon from this place, unable to clean up after it since his team was way too weak back then.

"the ice rock for the gem..."

he whistles for his pokemon to come over with him. water pulse from the glaceon coats a part of the huge crystal formation, while a follow up freeze-dry makes the ice rock {5} brittle enough to be chucked away from the main piece with a kick from kyle.

"and for something unique..."

kyle already has something in mind. he looks around in the area for the one thing children of mossdeep frequent the cave for: shoal shells. of the exits inaccessible to water, kyle approaches one of them, hoping for one of them to get washed to the shore for easy access. luckily, he gets one.

"bingo," he whispers to himself.

Kazimir Wynter Avatar

once again it was back into the black depths of the shoal caves, kazimir was starting to become pretty familiar with its layout and landmarks. he's been here so often within the past month that he was seriously thinking about creating some kind of secret base around here. not as a second home for himself but as a nice safe house that he could use, after all who would expect a hideout hidden away in a white winter wonderland surrounded by harsh temperatures and even more harsh pokemon. the perfect defense system that was as strong as the diamonds he found lying around in the ground and walls of one of the floors that would make a nice spot.

speaking of which there was a familiar sight ahead as kazimir made his way down the hole he found he noticed the sight of a bunch of gray that was a cluster of carbinks that were sleeping in a large pile. kazimir's face spread into a smile as he saw them and just couldn't keep the thought of how cute they looked all grouped up like that. like a pile of pretty gems ready for the taking. however he was no green adventurer and knew better than to wake up sleeping pokemon. that was just a call for trouble to start coming his way. especially since he knew that a carbink's sleeping habits were as brittle as the phosphophyllite he could see serving as their little nest. which was strange for reasons. oh well he wasn't a carbink after all.

making his way down he came at a bit of a stop, no natural way further down existed anymore where he found himself so he would need to get a little creative. shining the yellow light of of his flashlight around he searched for something that could help him out. the walls and ground around him shimmered as the light washed over them and as soon as it reached a large looking rock shape the room light up with a sort of purple hue that almost blinded him. as soon as his vision was able to focused he could see that two kinds of gems were stuck on the same rock, rubies and sapphires, which made for an interesting fusion for a geode of sorts. nature was weird.

tying a brown rope to the rock he made his way down into the depths below. as he did he imagined the smiling face of congratulating him as he put together his second badge. he wasn't sure why the big guy wanted him to join another contest of his but who was he to say no to a smile like that? the first time he was awarded it the guy gave him a hug and it was probably one of the best ones that kaz ever received, probably due to the man's rippling muscles. oh what he wouldn't do to be wrapped up in those arms once more and look up and see that wild red mane of hair that adorned his face and see that damned smile once again. sometimes he really reminded him of a pyroar.

for a while now he was still descending and was worried that he would run out of rope and be forced to drop to the floor. looking around he could see the bits of quartz that stuck out of the walls. for a moment he could swear that they were pointed at him, if he dropped onto a bed of them it might not end so favorably for him. luckily for him it seemed like that fear was unfounded as his feet managed to touch solid ground, or solid lapis lazuli as he noticed that he was standing on a deep blue surface, in fact the ground all around him was pretty solid like one large gem. shining a light once more he looked around to see what he could find in this strange room he discovered, then he found it, standing in the middle of the room. it just being there gave him a scare and he dropped his flashlight with its light still on and aimed at the creature that kaz never expected to encounter.

Regice.

a pokemon hidden in shoal cave's depths wasn't the strangest thing he's seen believe it or not, but a cave full of horses was as far as he was willing to believe in terms of craziness around hoenn. and now the region decided to hide another pokemon in here, what were the odds. still something was off about it, as it wasn't really...responding. even with a light shone on it it did not move but just stood there. kazimir approached it carefully. as he approached it still did not move, not even when he waved his arms in front of it. was it asleep? it was hard to tell when it didn't really have a face that was easy to base off of.

so he decided to test one way of waking it up. he slowly crept closer to it until he was a hair's length away and leaned in and LICKED it. screams of agony followed. he scratched at his tongue as the taste of metal and dirt with a hint of freezing cold stung his tongue as he tried to get a better look at the statue. it looked like a pokemon but was something made out of antarcticite and made it look like it was a statue made out of ice.

kaz mentally questioned why this thing was here and what he was supposed to do now, he still hadn't found something unique that he could take back with him. unless.... he was to take a piece of it with him. he quickly took a photo of himself with it for authentication as he broke off a forearm off the statue thanks to the help of his pokemon and went off on his way to collect his prize, after all this had to be UNIQUE enough for zac.

Chosen Prompt 1

100ft Freefall

Weighted Boons:

  • Cast away your inhibitions
  • Rocky Route
  • Rainbow Route

Oscar could barely make heads or tails of this map Zac gave him. To be honest Oscar was a tad distracted, when Zac came close it was extremely hard for Oscar to refrain from frothing at the mouth. I mean let's be real, Zac was a hunk of man if ever one existed. How was he supposed to focus on this half-ruined map when he couldn't shake the fantasy of climbing Mr. Ramsay like a tree and--

A drop of water landed on Oscar's head, cooling his jets so to speak. The red streaks on his face faded, all of the blood in his body working to pump that brain into action! Wrath and Nostra followed from the air, hovering and flapping as Oscar tried to follow the map. They kept their eyes peeled for anything unique that could be used for the badge, thought all they could see so far was endless pillars of limestone.

Oscar was worried he was about to be lost in this damn cave forever, when he turned a corner and encountered an unexpected finding. His black boot did not find solid ground as he stepped forward, and his body rapidly began to follow it downward. Oscar didn't even have time to yelp before Nostra swooped over and pushed him back with his head. Oscar stumbled back, falling on his behind as he looked upon what could have been his grave.

It was a hole, not just any hole but a giant hole. Oscar gingerly looked over the edge, and with his naked eye could barely see the bottom. He shivered, looking to Nostra. "Thanks for that. You're my favorite crobat." Nostra blushed, his purple skin temporarily glowing bright pink. Oscar nodded toward the hole, "Now go down there and see if you can find anything." Nostra's blushed cheeks immediately reverted, sighing heavily as he was put to work. Ignoring the amused buzzing of Wrath, Nostra dove into the hole.

He fell for a much shorter time than he expected, the hole appeared deeper than it was. Had to be no more than a hundred feet or so, not a length to scoff at but for a flying type it was cake. Nostra's superior eyesight quickly adjusted to the growing darkness, and he was easily able to spot the bottom and thus could slow himself before splatting into it. Though as far as hole bottoms go this was surely the strangest one he had seen.

Piled up on the cave floor were rocks, hundreds of broken cave bones that had been smashed to bits. Nostra flapped a bit to slow his descent, before gently landing on the top of the pile. He looked up, noticing that the ceiling high above the hole seemed damaged. Must have been a cave in at some point, still kinda weird though.

Nostra began to search through the sea of gray, looking for something interesting to bring back to his master. Mostly shale stone, bit of dolomite here and there. He considered bringing the dolomite to his master, but he was fairly certain crystals didn't qualify. He continued digging, using his wings like pickaxes.

After mistaking a breccia rock for a gem, Nostra became slightly discouraged. This looked like a bunch of nothing, just random ass rocks. His fury grew, and Nostra began to frantically dig in a rage. Suddenly there was a flash of white. Nostra froze, carefully examining what he had just dug up. Something was shining within a rock, at first he had thought it was white but no it had to be blue--no no green. With every shift of his head the color of the stone would change. How very mysterious, perhaps even unique. He grabbed the rock with his wings and pulled. It came out easily enough, but caused the rocks beneath it to give way.

Nostra watched the rocks fall, revealing what seemed to be some sort of tunnel. He made a mental note of this, wedging the rock in his mouth so that he could return to his master. Nostra flew back through the hole, emerging with a flourish before landing at Oscar's feet. Oscar chuckled when the bat returned, "About time, what'd ya get?" Nostra revealed the stone in his mouth, and Oscar (reluctantly) pried it out for a closer look. He wasn't exactly an expert on gems, but he was nearly absolutely certain that this was a raw opal. Oscar chuckled, petting Nostra on the head for a job well done.

Oscar was prepared to leave, but as he turned Nostra would chitter and point down the hole. Oscar looked down, being able to faintly make out the tunnel Nostra had revealed. He bit his lip, the possibility for further finds being too good to ignore. It looked a tad small though, and as he looked to his two champions he realized with a heavy heart that they would have to go down without him.

now came the part that for some reason he wasn't really looking forward to. explaining himself through this entire process and trying to figure out what to say that could possibly win over the judges hearts enough that he'll win. he wanted to win. which was strange because coming into this he had sort of been doing it as a joke. but now the drive and urge to beat the rest of the competitors had taken over and he wanted nothing more than to lord it over them that he had won his first try ever.

walking up to the now destroyed judges table he set his components on the table, avoiding the soggy paperwork that seemed to be strewn all over the place thanks to one of the contestants. he liked the yellow gem the most really and hoped that he'd be able to keep it even if he didn't win. hell, he'd probably keep it anyways even if they said he couldn't. taking a deep breath he decided it was time to start. "my unique component is the limestone that twizzler found... sure you can find limestone in a lot of caves but this limestone could have only been made here. no matter where you go no other limestone is going to be exactly like this one. no other limestone will be made up of the same components because they're unique to this cave. anything that died or lived here would have only died or lived in this cavern meaning those individual creatures that made up this rock will never be found anywhere else. pokemon like them will, but only those specific ones will have their remains here."

it was a little bit sappy bug zac seemed like a guy who would like sappy. and maybe the other judges would too. it was hard to tell really. "i think i used it to the fullest i could and tried to use it in a unique way." especially since everyone had just used the stalagmites on the ceiling or freeze out the rest of the competitors with ice. he didn't know that everyone and their mom was going to bring ice types into a cave like this. otherwise he wouldn't have brought twizzler. "i learned that there's a lot more to caves than just rock walls. they hide all sorts of things in them and when you change one part of it you change a lot of it... to be honest we probably wrecked a lot of pokemon's houses with all that ice and stuff." and with the flood. but he was sure they would bounce back. "we need to be careful with what we do to nature." it was a reluctant revelation internally at least.

"i did have fun! and i came here to have fun don't get me wrong but i'm surprised by how much fun i had... and that i learned something new about myself and places like this." and maybe about what he wanted to do in the future. all he could do was hope that his answers and finds were good enough.

  - explaining his finds
- glitch found a bright yellow gem, found metal from the sunken ship, twizzler gathered limestone as the something unique 3/3 acquired

kazimir walks up to the judge's table fiddling with the finishing touches on his biome badge before placing it front of the trio of judges and letting out a heavy sigh. "oh man that was more fun than last time. seriously didn't expect to be drowning and then ice skating within the same minute. although being stuck in the ice ain't a whole lotta fun." he follows his words with a laugh, "honestly i think the biome used me more than i used it. that cave in tactic we used was really something right? not to mention tunneling underneath to get under people, i can see why some pokemon build a whole network outta these places. not to mention they can hid a lot of things in them too if your smart, and if your unlucky can have a lot of things lurking in the dark. little bit claustrophobic for my taste though."

that's when he tapped his badge to try and focus on that instead of the horrors of the cave, "as for my badge here i actually found a piece of antarticite, or well a statue of it in the shape of...something..." take ing out his phone he showed the photo of the statue of regice that was embedded into the ground that he found as well as a few selfies of him with it, even the one where he licked it.

There were bones beneath the ice.

Skyler swiped a hand along the crystalline surface, removing a thin layer of dirt and frost to peer at the odd shapes within. She'd noticed the discoloration earlier, stark against the pale white which surrounded it. What had started as a brief glance soon turned into burning curiosity, beckoning the captain to approach. Which, being Skyler, she inevitably did.

Ice groaned under her weight as she crouched down, thin cracks spiderwebbing outwards with each shift of her body. Still Skyler leaned precariously close to the edge of the precipice, alarming  both of her pokemon which stood to the side like worried parents.

"I think I might be able to get these out."

The dagger gleamed as Skyler pulled it out of its brown leather sheathe.  There was no thought given to personal safety while the captain carved out chunks of ice, and only Oceanide's timely PSYCHIC saved the captain from tumbling into the pitch black depths along with a yellowed skull.

Honestly, there were days in which Oceanide wondered how her trainer had managed to survive thus far. Luck, probably, with a little bit of skill sprinkled in.

Captain Dross was rewarded for her efforts when a cobalt bag (that'd seen better days...) was pulled out of the hole she'd carved. For the most part its contents revealed nothing extraordinary, except for-

At first it looked like a block of pale blue ice. But the touch of her fingers didn't melt it, and its smooth, polished surface resembled some sort of jewel.

Skyler's silver eyes flashed with recognition and her grin widened into something sharp and cutting.

An Ice Stone. Yes, this would do.

Chosen Prompt 2

Draconic Defender

Weighted Boons:

  • Chu-e on that

As Oscar watched his companions descend into the pit, he couldn't help but feel a bit worried. After all, he wouldn't be able to keep an eye on them as they traveled through the tunnel. Ideally he would have been able to go with them, but alas his poor pokemon would not be able to carry his weight all the way down. Although, Oscar was more worried about being carried upward if he were being honest. A lollipop hung loosely from his mouth, barely acknowledging the treat beyond the occasional lick. His focus was locked onto the tunnel, waiting patiently for his pokemon to return.

Nostra and Wrath wiggled hurriedly through the tunnel. Wrath took on the lead, swinging her thorax back and forth to inch her way deeper into the cave. Nostra was close behind, using his wings to crawl after his companion. The two of them knew not where this would lead, but they were confident they could conquer any challenge. After all, this was their home biome.

The deeper the tunnel went, the deeper the darkness grew. It became so dark that Wrath and Nostra's attuned eyesight struggled to see what was in front of them. Thus every once in a while Nostra would let out a cry, using echolocation to make sure no danger was approaching. Eventually his cry was met with--well nothing. He chittered, a warning to Wrath that something was amiss ahead. The two cautiously continued, crawling ever forward until--

WHOOP, they slipped. The two tumbled down a surprise slide made of limestone, twirling and tumbling toward a bright opening. The duo ended up flying into a bright room together, rolling clumsily to a stop in front of a large rock. Nostra was the first to regain his bearings, looking upward to find that their new location was lit by hundreds of glowing crystals. When wrath noticed the ceiling, her greatest weakness kicked in. She stared longingly at the beautiful lights, flying upward to get a closer look. Not nearly as amused, Nostra turned his attention to the rock.

It was enormous, and very oddly shaped. The color was interesting too, being some sort of grayish blue. It was a very unique looking fixture, perhaps unique enough for the master's badge! Nostra decided to strike the rock, hoping to get a chunk off to take to Oscar. However when he hit the rock's surface it felt, unfamiliar. His wing bounced back harshly, sending chills up and down his compact body. That was surely strange, but even stranger yet was when the rock began to move.

Nostra launched himself backward, flapping rigidly as he watched the rock shift. It was around the time that a spiked head with glowing red eyes was revealed that Nostra began to realize that this was likely not a rock. The mystery creature rose to its full glory, and Nostra gazed with horror as it roared viciously. It may have been old and discolored, but there was no doubt that this was a salamence.

Nostra chittered upward to get Wrath's attention, but alas she was too busy admiring the crystals. As Nostra turned back to the salamence, he was met with an Iron Tail coming right for him. The tail was faster than Nostra's reaction time, and he found himself sailing precariously through the air and into the far wall. Face first.

Nostra coughed as he peeled himself off the wall, the stale taste of limestone overtaking his senses. He spat out the stones caught in his teeth and flew back into the fray. The salamence turned to meet him, his roar echoing horridly across the room. Nostra narrowed his eyes, unwavering in his determination. When in range he would twirl like a windmill, sending circular air blades quickly swirling toward his opponent (Air Cutter). The blades hit the salamence head on, and yet seemed to do next to nothing as it charged upward. Energy enveloped its body, delivering a psychic powered strike into Nostra's center (Zen Headbutt).

Nostra was thrown upward, slamming into the ceiling with tremendously effective force. The dazed bat batted his eyes, trying desperately to remain conscious. Nostra's body remained wedged between a set of crystals, a few of them falling swiftly to the ground due to the impact. As the crystals landed, the salamence seemed to recoil, stepping backward in a sort of bizarre panic. The crystals surrounding him felt cold, uncomfortably cold. It was then that something clicked in his head. These crystals were made of ice! No wonder Wrath seemed especially enamored with them. Speaking of, Nostra looked to his side and found the daft moth still admiring the ceiling, seemingly unaware of her companion's presence. Nostra rolled his eyes, wiggling forcefully to pry himself from out of the crystals. As he popped out, he felt himself using all of his effort just to stay afloat. As Nostra blinked he soon noticed that the Salamence was looking right at him. Because of course it was.

The salamence flapped fiercely, rapidly ascending to meet Nostra in battle once more. Nostra acted with haste, slamming his wings into the ceiling with venomous flare (Cross Poison). A huge chunk of crystal dislodged from the ceiling, falling upon the ascending dragon. Realizing what was about to occur, the dragon frantically tried to turn out of the way to avoid being crushed. However it was too late, the ice chunk smashed into its lower body and slammed the mighty beast into the floor. Its impact caused the entire room to shudder, sending even more crystals hurdling toward the ground. The already trapped dragon was further buried by a cascade of ice, further cementing its doom.

Unfortunately, Nostra wasn't spared from the falling ice. A large chunk smashed into him, slamming him into the ground with great force. In his delirium, Nostra would try to look upon his chaotic surroundings. His eyes eventually rested upon a glowing object laying right in front of him. Upon further examination, it appeared to be a Drgon Scale. He clasped the scale with his wing, and then fell unconscious. The crystal-fall subsided, the last thing to fall from the ceiling being Wrath herself. She landed gracefully next to her downed companion, her obsession subsiding enough to realize he was there.

Wrath hurried to his side, poking him gingerly with her wing. He was still breathing, but he was knocked out cold. Wrath looked back up to the ceiling, cursing the crystals for their fantastical hypnotic allure. Yet as she gazed upward, she found something--troubling. Enough crystals had fallen to reveal the surface beneath, and what lay upon that surface was something Wrath had never seen before.

Captain Dross had the uncanny feeling that she was stepping into a classroom when she reentered the main chamber. There was... something resembling a badge cradled in her hands, though upon closer inspection it would resemble a disjointed mishmash of knick-knacks, thrown together haphazardly and tied together with a single glistening thread. Any kindergartner would be proud of this creation!

Mixed feelings settled in; although the proud captain didn't hesitate to step forward and place her badge on the judges' table, there was a nervous restlessness to her movements. She'd never been a stellar student, after all.

"Frank here didn't mind contributing a bit of his mustache to the cause." A finger tapped over the pale thread. "It got loose while we were running - well, sliding - from a swarm of Golbat. I wouldn't have been able to navigate through this environment by myself, so I thought it only fair to have it be part of the badge. Plus, this isn't something you can find every day, huh?" The ice rock glinted underneath, cold to the touch.

"I've gotten used to underwater caves. This experience was... different. I don't think I've used the biome exactly. There's only so much you can do against the forces of nature when they decide to turn against you." A wry smile curled her lips, though she seemed eager about the thought.  "I do love a good challenge. And this network of caves has given me just that."

A short bark of laughter escaped her throat. "Learned? Don't take crop tops to freezing caves." Except when you have to assert your abdominal dominance, of course. "And maybe get some spelunking equipment next time. You gotta be able to count on yourself, no matter how well-prepared your pokemon might be."

And it was as true for caves as it was for the sea. A lesson Skyler had taken to heart a long time ago.

"Are you kidding me? I had a blast. Pity I missed the tea though. I don't suppose there's any left?" Skyler's voice lowered to a whisper, as if she were confessing to a secret. "My abs are freezing here."

Chosen Prompt 3

Behind the Stone Door

Weighted Boons:

Last time we left our heroes, they had just escaped the terrible clutches of an angry salamence! More accurately, Nostra fought the draconic mencace while Wrath was hypnotized by the glowing ice crystals on the ceiling. Those same crystals were knocked down to defeat the dragon, but they also revealed something very troubling to the now aware Wrath. With Nostra knocked out cold from the battle, it would be up to Wrath to solve this mystery.

A lot of things went through Wrath's head as she gazed up what the crystals had been hiding. Mostly confusion, she was having trouble comprehending what this even was. What she was seeing was a flat stone surface with a huge circle in its center. The circle was covered in bizarre symbols, and mist seemed to be emitting from its edges. In its center was a hole in the shape of a dragon's mouth, which also leaked blue mist.

Wrath was oddly good at basic puzzles; her master tested his team with brain teasers often, and she was one of the few that could finish them without help. She had no idea how to read the symbols (well she didn't know how to read at all), but she could infer that this circular oddity was blocking another part of the cave. The only question was, how was she to get past it?

Wrath used her wings to drag Nostra further away from the crystal pile that was once a salamence. She nearly missed the dragon scale he had tucked into his wing, as he was unable to retain his grip while being dragged. She gingerly used her wings to tuck the sleeping crobat into his wings so that he would stay warm, finishing off by tucking in the dragon scale as well. When she believed that Nostra would be comfortable, she would fly up to the ceiling.

Wrath felt immediately overwhelmed as she attached herself to the circle. There was just--a lot to take in. She decided it would be best to break it up into parts, beginning at the circle's perimeter. She put her sensitive feather-like antennae over the mist, swaying them back and forth to get a more intimate read on the mysterious phenomenon. To her surprise the mist was cold--like extraordinarily cold. Was this how the ice crystals formed? The perimeter was clearly part of an opening, just wide enough o let mist slip through. So that would mean--

She wiggled her way across the symbols, noting that every row was divided by etched in lines but not seeking to scrutinize that just yet. She came upon the dragon mouth, which was a lot bigger up close. She put her antennae over that mist, and once more she felt an incredible chill. She pondered for a moment, examining the stone dragon head carefully. It was actually wide enough to put her head through, but only that much. Sticking her head in as far as it could go, she would find herself encased in darkness. This would do little to stop her investigation, as she wiggled her antennae to examine the 'throat' of the dragon.

She was surprised by what she felt, a large set of funnels that lead up to twisting tubes connected to--pullies? Some sort of rope based device. She popped her head out of the mouth, contemplating what this could mean. Well this was clearly a door, most likely created by humans for a purpose she couldn't very much comprehend at the moment. Likely dragon worshipers or tamers, though why they would make their den in the ceiling of one of Hoenn's coldest caves was beyond her. The dragon itself was the key to opening this 'door', but what was the method?  Perhaps fire, or a dragon type attack? Hmmm those were obvious answers, but every time she thought on these options she was brought back to how cold it was on the other side.

In the end she concluded that she would just have to experiment. She had few options of ways to try opening it, and her only other option was dragging Nostra all the way back to master--which understandably wasn't very appealing. The funnels likely sent something through the tubes, which created a force strong enough to pull the ropes inside to--well she wasn't sure beyond that. Given that the door was upside down, the only thing she felt might work was--

FWOOOOSH

Wrath had leapt off and swung her wings as hard as she could toward the dragon mouth. A point-blank Icy Wind was forced down its throat, and the reaction was almost immediate. Wrath heard some sort of mechanism churn from behind the door. One by one segments of the door slid backwards, rolling away into an unseen space. With each subtracted segment, the mist would grow thicker and fill the room with an unearthly chill. To be honest Wrath found it quite comfortable, but she doubt Nostra would last long if it continued on this way. Without further delay, Wrath flew into the hole that had taken the door's place.

As Wrath ascended upward, she was met with a wide tunnel that led into complete darkness. She was unafraid, rising into the shadows until she was completely blind. That last thing she could see was the very end of the tunnel, leading up into what felt like a very spacious room. Wrath floated stilly, listening around her for some sort of clue of what lay dormant in this room. She heard--snoring? Very hollow snoring, as if whatever was sleeping was wearing some sort of copper helmet. She also heard a series of plops upon the stone ground. It was a familiar plop, like a very small marble hitting a solid object. It had to be Hail! It was so cold in this room, that the normal water droppings from the ceiling had turned into hail. Wrath took advantage of this, illuminating the room with an Aurora Veil that swirled around her body. Suddenly she could see everything, though she almost wish she couldn't.

The room wasn't nearly as large as she had thought, being about half the size of the previous rooms. There were dragon statues all over, covered in frost or encased in ice. Through the center of the room was an incredibly ugly abstract statue surrounded by golden treasure. Ah ha! So this must have been the den for the salamence, built by dragon worshipers to give him a comfortable home in an otherwise inhospitable environment.  It must have been locked out by whatever made it so cold in here, but what could it be? Never mind that, Wrath shifted her focus squarely onto the gold surrounding the statue.

Daintily she floated toward the hoard, overcome by its beautiful shining denizens. Any one of these trinkets would be perfect for her master, though she felt that she should pick something more solid so that it was easier to melt down. She settled upon a golden ring-like crown that sat upon the statue's--head? Whatever, she grabbed it with her mouth and pulled it off. Wrath reeled with delight, overjoyed that her master now had everything he needed to make a badge!

And then the statue stirred.

It made a harsh snorting sound as it began to float upward, heaving as it awoke from its long slumber. Wrath's heart sank, she had lost track of the snoring. She looked to the rising statue, eyes quivering with fear of the unknown. The massive figure turned, revealing a horrid face with a gaping jaw and bloodshot eyes. The creature roared at Wrath, who spared no time trying to escape.

As she flew down the tunnel, she heard the beast flying close behind. It probably would have caught her if it weren't so busy slamming against the walls in its rage. She heard it begin to charge an attack, and popped out of the tunnel just in time to dodge its Ice Beam. The creature pushed itself out of the tunnel, chomping wildly as it chased the frantic moth. She heard its grotesque jaws chomping over and over, getting ever closer as she flutter about the crystal room in circles. She became certain that it was about to eat her whole--but then it went silent. Wrath stopped in her tracks, daring to check behind her to see what the beast was preparing. However, what she found was far more optimistic.

Nostra had awoken, and ambushed the creature by wrapping himself around its behind. The beast should have been able to buck him off, but it was too late--Nostra's teeth had sunken deep within its skull. The creature let out a chilling tinny scream, frozen in horror as Nostra Leeched its Life away. What little color that remained on the creature faded, and it would soon fall to the ground with a terrible clang. Nostra let go, having had his fill of this being's life force. Wrath thought it would get back up, but the being remained still.

Wrath sighed with relief, fluttering to Nostra to embrace him with her wings. Nostra did not look happy to receive affection, but he would be lying if he said that he wasn't glad to confirm his companion's safety. Carrying their prizes, the two flew back up the slide to return to their master.

Oscar nearly fainted as his pokemon returned, seemingly unharmed. They flew up the pit to meet him, and he immediately embraced them both. "Holy shit I was so fucking worried." Nostra wiggled out from his master's grasp, embarrassed by the display. He quickly delivered his contribution, spitting out the dragon scale into Oscar's hand. Oscar smiled, "Oh yeah, that'll do it."

Wrath reveled in the hug for a while longer before displaying her own prize, the golden crown. Oscar took the crown and marveled at it, "Holy fuck where'd you get this?" Wrath just shrugged, having no way to explain her adventure. Oscar examined all three of his objects together, chuckling to himself as he imagined its appearance, "This badge is gonna be bad ass."

On the walk back Oscar thought over Zac's questions. He knew his answers had to be good, so he put all of his focus into their structure. Before he knew it though, he would look up and be back with the others. Oscar gulped, worried about his chances. His pokemon must have seen his worry, as they both perched themselves on his shoulders, their best way to reassure him. Oscar smiled, even if they didn't win he was glad he got to experience this. Without further delay, he approached the judge's table and turned in his components.

Oscar cleared his throat, standing up straight as he began his answers. "Before I start, I just want to say that this was a hell of an adventure. I had no idea what to expect going into this contest, but it was a truly extraordinary experience and I thank you for allowing me to participate. For the first question, I present my unique component." Oscar pointed with his hand to the dragon scale, "This find was insane, you would never expect to find something like this in an icy cave. But one of the many things I've learned today is that caves are not as predictable as one might think. Caves are as alive as any other biome, constantly changing its form and environment to match the pokemon that reside within it. This dragon came to Hoenn's coldest cave and adapted to make this place a home, just like every other cave dweller. This scale represents the spirit of adaptation, of a pokemon's tenacity to survive in a seemingly inhospitable biome."

Oscar took a breath, chuckling to himself as he refocused. "Forgive me for going out of order, but I accidentally started my answer to the third question so I might as well continue it. I learned that caves aren't as simple as they appear. They're a versatile survival space, being able to take many forms to suit the pokemon that live within it. Even if the pokemon is ill suited for cave life, the very structure of a cave act as the building blocks for that pokemon to grow and overcome the initial challenge."

Oscar held out his arms, bringing attention to the pokemon on his shoulders. "This brings me back to the second question. I have full confidence that my pokemon have used this biome to its fullest potential. Crobats have spent years using caves as their homes, adapting over countless generations to fully master its aspects and resources. Frosmoths may not commonly make their nests in caves, I have seen numerous members of the species survive effortlessly using only what the cave provides. With born-in instincts to survive in this very environment, these two were destined to use the biome to its fullest."

Oscar closed his eyes, lifting his head to take in a deep breath before answering the final question. "As for whether or not I had fun--yeah it was pretty great. I mean my heart was pounding the entire time and I am pretty sure I ruined this suit with sweat but yeah this was fucking fun. I think my favorite thing was watching how everyone used the biome to their advantage, it reminded me to never underestimate the creativity of a trainer. As for these two, they can answer for themselves." Wrath nodded eagerly, while Nostra hesitated. He thought over his harrowing experiences, before eventually shrugging and nodding as well. It beat training anyway.

Oscar bowed his head slightly, "I thank you for your time and consideration, and look forward to hearing what you decide." With that Oscar turned to mingle amongst his fellow contestants.

each component gets bundled up in a small bag that kyle wraps around his wrist. maybe he'd look around for better alternatives, but best believes that his choice was the right one despite its abundance in the cave itself.

the blocked off exit eventually opens when the barriers created by his pokemon dissipate into the air. kyle asks his pokemon to create light by refracting light from his ninetales' moonblast with his glaceon setting up a hail for its partner's aurora veil.

kyle shivers at the deep end of the cave despite his appropriate clothing, arms wrapped around himself as he turns to his pokemon well acclimated to it. "counting on you guys to bring me back."

---

he eventually reaches the judges' table from his trip, basically dragging his legs as he forced himself to move. snow and frost covered most of his apparel, dusting them off as soon as he reaches a spot where he can sit and carefully do his craft.

it's a usual art project for the people of hoenn who were particularly interested in it and making something in resemblance to an actual product is a lot easier than an authentic one. in a few quick minutes, he whips up his iteration of the biome badge.

"tada!"

he stands up and walks up a few steps to where the judges' table was. an arm rests on the surface of the table, taking everything casually, as he shows off his creation that vaguely resembles as a shell bell with his free hand.

"i mean, it's the shoal cave. shoal shells are the obvious answer if we're talking about something that can only be found here. they're not rare, but they're unique to this place." he opens up the shell bell afterwards to show the chunk of ice rock. "these are rare too- only found on shoal cave in the entirety of hoenn- but other regions have this too, so it's delegated to being the gem of this badge."

he finally lets go of the table, placing the badge neatly in front of them, before taking a few steps back.

"if you say the fullest, then probably not. there's only so much i can do with my pokemon: ice bridges over water, blocking off corridors with ice walls, unavoidable aoe attacks in a closed room... you know, maybe that's why ice-types make this their home!" kyle turns back and surveys the area. "it's the perfect fortress for them."

he imagines a raid scenario in his head in the few moments his eyes were away from the judges before snapping his attention back to them.

"i'm going to be real for a moment, chief. i went in here without the intention of winning, and i got to say, you got my approval on how you run these things. it's interactive, the clear objectives of each round help so participants aren't lost, and the sense of competition adds uncertainty to variables to the equation."

he places his hands on his hips as a smile breaks his expression.

"objectively speaking, it's got great mechanics per round with potential to be different and unique with each iteration. it's exciting even from a spectator's point of view. subjectively, well, yeah, it's pretty fun, i'd say."

kyle finds difficulty in saying his piece outside of technical terms, though he's certain that the judges got what he wanted to tell them.

BIOME BADGE GYM CHALLENGE - CAVE [BC]
POSTED ON Apr 26, 2021 6:09:23 GMT
Laurence Anderson Avatar

After they’d left the area that had nothing but glittering columns of ice stretching from floor to ceiling, Lars knew that they had to move quickly.

They were still short an item or two, but before he could so much as even attempt to think of where to go next, a loud, discordant screeching racket cut through the silence. It was a familiar one, too. One he’d heard and encountered earlier—and did not wish to meet again.

“Nope, not going in that direction. Don’t want to meet a bunch of Golbat and Crobat again,” he muttered to himself, urging Ro to take a left at the next path.

He didn’t even need to look up—they had a very distinct ‘rallying cry’ whenever they tended to swarm together to hunt.

A few moments later, the source of the discordant noise revealed itself; indeed it was a flock of Golbat and Crobat moving together as a single, solitary unit through the same path they’d traversed earlier.

“Yikes, let’s go,” he said as he shook his head, before the Metagross made the same ‘white noise’ sounds in agreement. The racket grew fainter as the Golbat and Crobat horde continued their hunt elsewhere.

Surprisingly, his Lucario didn’t even wake up at that loud, screeching noise.

Eventually the traveling duo found themselves in a different location from—wait. Lars wasn’t sure if he’d encountered this part of Shoal Cave before. It looked like a secret tunnel leading to who knew where—

And something was glittering on the ground. Perking up his ears in case another flock of Golbat and Crobat came screeching by, he slid off the Metagross’s back once more. Another piercing sound shook the silence; but this time it wasn’t the aggressive hunting call of the Golbat or Crobat—this one was much more… melancholic. Sad.

“Oh, I wouldn’t want to be that lonely Swoobat,” he mused to himself, crouching down and looking for something sparkling on the ground. A few moments later, his guess of the owner of the muted cry proved correct as a lone Swoobat flew through the air, looking for something—or someone. He wasn’t sure which.

How easy it would’ve been to understand Pokémon if he could understand them! However, he let the sad Swoobat wander further into the cave, not wanting to jeopardize it further.

Once the object of his attention had left, he turned his gaze to the little outcrop he had homed in on—it was full of chunks of basalt, although there looked to be bits and pieces of sandstone scattered here and there.

Had he stumbled upon a Sableye’s stash, or something? No, wait, Sableye didn’t like rocks, they stole shiny precious objects like emeralds, garnets, and sapphires, to name a few. So this was definitely the stash of something else…

He continued to eye the piles of rock and mineral, until he caught sight of something that looked rather out of place. Quickly slipping his gloves back on, he snatched up the chunk of iron and then weighed it in his palm.

“Guess this’ll have to do.”

He hoped he wasn’t the last to make it back. But he had a feeling he was. Holy shit was he going to get points knocked off from that?

Either way, it was time to ham up and face the music.

“Sorry. Got sidetracked by a bunch of feral Golbat and Crobat,” he apologized as he pointed behind him. “Anyway—”

Clearing his throat he then proceeded to explain his strange, eclectic choices.

“Okay, the unique thing I found in the depths of the cave is—a piece of NeverMeltIce. It’s surprising how something this small can stand the heat of Hoenn’s predominantly tropical weather. I chose this, because it’s one of the best representative items that embodies what Shoal Cave is—while a cavernous hall to explore, the further and deeper in you go, the colder it gets—and how a piece of NeverMeltIce like this still retains its shape is still a mystery, even to those who study rocks and the formation of the earth as a whole.”

The next question made him chuckle nervously.

“This time, I think I did? Not too sure, really, considering how wild things got when the caves started flooding and then everything became a hot spring. Although in the first part things did get a bit hairy, seeing as how Alpha’s still passed out over there,” he gestured to the sleeping Lucario that was still on top of the Metagross’s back.

“Hopefully the Shoal Cave can return to its previous state—untouched and perpetually cold, nestled in the embrace of the rising and falling tides.”

Taking a deep breath, because he knew he was going to start rambling if he went off-topic, he made himself stay on the topic at hand so he didn’t lose his bearings.

“I didn’t realize how intense some people can get when it comes to outdoing each other. Guess it’s an integral part of human nature after all, to be the flashiest as possible. Wait—am I being too direct? Sorry about that,” he apologized before continuing, “…sometimes being overly competitive can bite a person in the ass, so it definitely made me take some humble pie in the process.”

Oh, boy, he was sure he blew that third question.

“Lastly, asides from Alpha bein’ mostly ganged up on—I know I did have fun even if it put me at a disadvantage at times despite being one of the locals around these parts.”

And—the kicker here was that Lars was still shirtless while explaining all this. Oops.

BIOME BADGE GYM CHALLENGE - CAVE [BC]

“Enjoying yourself, Zac Roomba?”

Chryssa appeared behind the red-haired gym leader like a library monitor snooping on a misbehaving student. Hands twisted innocently behind her back, the girl leaned forward to inspect the contest footage the two remaining judges were reviewing. The camera was currently focused on as black seawater threatened to trap the woman and her Lapras, prompting a race against the tide. It was a powerful performance, and one Chryssa thoroughly enjoyed distracting the pair from.

“I bet you thought I wouldn’t be back, didn’t you?” she asked condescendingly, sitting down in ‘s unoccupied chair. “As usual, you are as wrong as you are short-sighted! But don’t worry, I’m not back for your little contest.” Her eyes narrowed and she leaned forward. A cold wind seemed to pass, stirring the still-drying papers on the judges’ table. “I merely bring a warning.”

She smelled of cold—and secrets—and the dark.

“Strange things live in these caves, Mr. Ramsay. And stranger ones die in them.” The girl’s clear eyes turned downwards as she polished the revolver she’d found at the bottom of the mineral pool. She spun the chamber like a fidget spinner.  “Do you like it? I call it my Biome Gun.” Her eyes narrowed.

Zac’s Minior, which traditionally monitored these contests, had been unable to follow her into the depths. They, and the judges, could not have seen what Chryssa had seen.

The Eye.

The Serpent.

The Pendulum.

“A pity Miss Demarais was lost in the flood,” Chryssa said, turning the tiny portrait of the pink-haired gym leader face down on the table as if she couldn’t bear to look at it. “Alas, perhaps she could have solved this mystery. As it is...”

The world seemed to flicker for a moment. The television screen glitched before Chryssa’s eyes, suddenly spaced several inches to the left and tilted to a different angle. The image had changed to a picture of Sableye lighting a passage of glittering columns with Will-o-Wisp, the firelight sparkling off each pillar. It was a part of the cave Chryssa had never been to— at least, nothing she remembered.

Then it was back the way it was, as if nothing had happened.

“As it is, there’s no helping it,” the girl continued after a brief pause, then scooted her chair closer to see the screen. “Hope you don’t mind my intrusion, . Badge or no badge, I’m not missing the finale.”

The footage continued to spin, winding ever-closer to the end.
