As the new leader of sootopolis, melody owed it not only to herself but the people of her city to be the best gym leader she could be. While she felt like she was already a good trainer, there was always room for improvement and her most lacking skill at the moment was hand to hand combat. luckily enough there was a perfect spot for her to train, the verdanturf gym! Melody knew very little of Noah's gym but she heard that everyone who leaves there either leaves stronger than before or beaten to a pulp. She was kind of nervous...what kind of person was he? Was he a big massive brute who liked fighting people for the enjoyment of squashing others?! Melody had been watching way too many films lately...was she the next karate kid? Well, sitting outside the gym waiting wouldnt really do anything so she waltz right into the gym and waited for her turn!

melody is beckoned in by a gym trainer. clad in bright athleisure, the woman stops upon recognizing the challenger in waiting. however, she keeps her fangirling from welling up past her dedication to duty. after sootopolis' star is brought inside, she strafes to the side and sneaks photos.

noah emerges from the nearby gym area. peeling away a water bottle from his lips, he takes a moment to freshen himself before realizing the time. earphone buds pop out of his ears as noah closes the distance between him and melody with a brisk sprint.

"yo! you're melody, right? sootopolis' new gym leader?" he extends a gloved hand, the black microfiber stretched across his palm. "nice to finally meet you! i'm guessing you're here for a battle, yeah?"

Melody smiled at the trainer who recognized her via her music or was it the gym? It was hard to tell without asking but Melody wasn't gonna pump the brakes on this gym challenge for such a thing. However she WOULD go back after the battle was complete. Her gaze met Noah's as he saw a peppy pinkette jauntily come up to him "Yep yep, that's me" she confirmed with a smile. She looked at his hand and met it with her own before even thinking about how he might be a bit sweaty, not that it bothered her really as it was just the mark of someone who was dedicated to their craft. "Yeah, It's a bit weird to be a gym leader without any badges so I figured I'd fix that. Luckily you had a spot open when I looked and snatched it up." she responded as she allowed him to lead the way and tell her what to do.

"naw, it isn't weird." noah waves off the notion. he marches onward, smile thick on his face. "i don't have any either."

he laughs with full voice. the gym's ruckus, loud with the clamor of weights hitting racks and sneakers slamming against treadmill belts, dims as they move into the heart of the building.

"we've got too much on our plate to go chasing after other gyms." noah says. "doesn't make you any less of a leader, right?"

the dark-haired gym leader pushes two heavy doors open. ahead, a cage ring awaits in darkness before stagelights roar in activation. crashing on noah's version of a stage, the lights capture the claustrophobic square.

noah summons two pokemon on to the canvas. a primeape and machamp begin to stretch as the red glow dissipates.

"any questions? you need to show me you and your pokemon are good with close-quarters combat." noah declares. "if you can demonstrate that, you get my knockout badge. first move's on you, melody!"

She was glad to hear that it wasn't so strange to not have previously not earned any gym badges. She herself found it strange but found comfort in the fact Noah was like her. However she disagreed mentally that it didn't make her a leader, unless she proved her skills somehow what gave her the right to lead? It's at least how she looked at it. The girl smiled at him "You're kind aren't you? I'm glad you're a gym leader then. Hoenn needs more kind people like you." [break][break]

She was impressed with his strength as the two massive doors swung open. She looked in awe of the gym, while to others it may not have seen like it was much. But the scene melody's mind painted here was a marvelous one, pokemon and trainers alike fighting together. The highs and lows felt in this gym surely must have been marvelous and she was excited to try it out for herself. Melody was muttering to herself like a mad woman as she inspected it all closely, creating stories in her minds about each stain or so that couldn't be scrubbed out, not to her eyes at least. [Break][break]

The only thing to snap her out of it was Noah's voice that interrupted her thoughts. He told her the educational goal of the gym battle. "Im ready!" she shouted out as the fire in her eyes was burning extremely bright right now. "close quarter fighting is super similar to dance, so I hope my pokemon can show you that as well! Go! Baba and Lili!" as she tossed out two pokeballs into the ring. A beautiful red and black bird appeared as it spun around in a fluid motion, It was an Oricorio, specifically it's baile forme. Liligant crossed her "hands" and bowed to the opposing pokemon also appearing very graceful. [break][break]

Noah graciously granted her the first move so she needed to make sure it was a decisive one. "Very well then! My only question to you is, are you ready to dance?" She grinned as she gave her first orders to liligant specifically. "Liligant! Quiver dance!" As liligant began to spin with oricorio and ended it in a dip. Oriocorio's DANCER ability activated as well and also was able to copy the move. "Baba! Dash in close and kick with your legs for an airslash!" she commanded as Oricorio dashed forward and tried to deliver a swift stomping movement as an airslash coated it's leg.

"dance? like this?" noah begins to body roll under the lights. moves pulled straight out of a viral vertical video, doing some sort of fuckboy dance as if to lower the other's guard.

still, he's quick to switch serious.

"WIDE GUARD and push in!" noah commands, one hand still on his belly. "marcel, show them your moves too!"

his primeape follows the slowly advancing machamp, its large body protecting with arms outstretched as AIR SLASHES collide with its fists. primeape ROLE PLAYS and finds rhythm in its feet.

"don't let us out dance you, melody!"

Melody would have assumed that Noah was a pretty good dancer if he could keep a steady beat during their battle. As a fighter he had to be light on his feet right!? Wait, what is he, EW NOT THAT DANCE. Melody visibly cringed at Noah "Remind me to teach you some better moves, not that internet trend dance crap." she said [break][break]

Melody watched as his Pokémon readily adapted to his strategy, using wide guard to block the air slash kicks and his primeape using roleplay to copy oricorio's dancer ability. It didn't seem like it did very much but that didn't mean melody was going to let up! "baba quickly back up!" she tells her as the Oricorio delivers it's last kick and uses machamp as a platform to kick off of, clinging onto the wall cage with it's bird feet. "Liligant help make an opening for oricorio! Give em some sleepy time punches!" Liligant let out a meek roar as she ran with her hands upwards screaming at machamp and tried to punch it with it's leafy hands covered in sleep powder as she ran towards Machamp.

She decided to give noah a reply to his earlier taunt "As if you can keep up with my moves! Oricorio! Air slash kicks again on Machamp!"

"if it's a trend, then that's what the people want, right?" noah combats the disparaging remarks with a laugh.

the liligant charges, voice mewling as dust scatters from its hands. as the ring is graced with glitter, his machamp swells with a flex. it ENCORES the lilligant's SLEEP POWDER despite its unorthodox use— counting on its hardiness to see him through.

as the AIR SLASHES collide harshly against the machamp's bulk, it falls asleep. the primeape rushes past both machamp and lilligant, summoning stones (STONE EDGE) before punching them toward the oricorio with startling speeds.

"not bad!" noah says. an approving shape comes to his lips at the sight of lilligant's somnolent streak across the ring. "creative! we like that here."

He did have a fair point, if it was popular it was cause people liked it. But she'd argue all day long over how shit something could be. But that was besides the point! She had to focus on the battle! Especially because Noah managed to make a really good fuckin play. Liligant was now stuck using sleep powder for a while until it wore off. [break][break]

On top of that he also had used rockslide on baba who was sent flying from the super super effective attack! Crap crap crap! Melody had to make a choice and quickly lest he use that move again! Melody sent out her orders quickly "Quickly baba! Teeter dance! get everyone into the groove!" as Baile oricorio began to dance strangely and forced everyone who watched to dance along as well. Sadly, Machamp due to being asleep was not confused and thanks to noah stealing dancer earlier Oricorio would also end up being confused. [break][break]

Melody took advantage of Liligant's own tempo this way as well and sent out her orders for lily as well."Liligant now! While they're distracted go get some more sleepy punches in there!" she said as Liligant hesitated once more, running up to Primeape screaming wildly as tears flew down it's face. She hated fighting up close be she was willing to do it for melody which warmed the girl's heart.

as everyone dances, the cage ring becomes an impromptu ball. if the stagelights were filtered with coloured film, one could mistake it for a drunken rave.

noah watches the lilligant rush in close. as it punches his primeape, SLEEP POWDER continues to douse the monkey in cascading curtains.

as sleep begins to take hold of it, the primeape hurls a LOW KICK at its partner, toppling it to the ground. the machamp smashes its head on the canvas as the primeape falls asleep.

the behemoth stirs and begins to lift itself up like an ancient temple unearthing itself from the sands.

it has awoken.

"pretty proud of your lilligant." noah says. "not gonna lie, i didn't expect that from her. that deserves," he bodyrolls again, "one of these." he points at melody almost flirtatiously as the battle rages—or slumbers?—on.

OH GOD PLEASE NOT THE BODY ROLL, NOT LIKE THIS SIR. She cringed at him, two could play at this game! "Fine!" as she began to do the CRINGIEST dances on the famous platform known as toktik in Hoenn. [break][break]

It was a guilty pleasure she normally hid away from the world but she couldn't contain it any longer. However it was her guilty pleasure because these were the ones not man people liked.

But now that she was dancing she was even more focused than before "Dont let up you two! dance together!" she tells them, now that Primeape was asleep she could freely use her dancing moves! "Liligant take a back seat, rest up from those sleep powders! Oricorio you're back up again!" she tells them as the dance partner takes a backseat to let her sleep powder build up again. [break][break]
"Oricorio! Mirror move primeape's low kick!" she called out as Oricorio dashed at the behemoth Machamp doing a slide to try and kick it at it's feet. [break][break]

The bigger they are the harder they fall right?

as the oricorio dashes toward noah's machamp, the gris-skinned behemoth throws off the last few petals of sleep. the LOW KICK lands on tough muscle before the machamp COUNTERS by rotating its upper body. two heavy arms swing in an attempt to slap the bird away.

his primeape continues to sleep. snoring, its prominent nose shudders as air is pushed out from its still body.

noah shouts, "c'mon! wake up!" he shakes his head and utters to himself: "the one time i use that move..."

Ah, melody should've expected as much. Machamp was much larger and stronger than oricorio in terms of physical strength so he could easily counter her trying to mimic his style. Melody checked in with Liligant who nodded no back to melody as she was still letting off little spurts of sleep powder as it tried to resist the move's effects. [break][break]

"Just a bit more time oricorio! Liligant's almost free of it's grip!" she calls out to her bird. "Use that momentum! Grab onto the roof of the cage!" she calls out "Now make like a hawlucha and drop on him! Feather dance style!" she orders as a flurry of feathers drop from above and Oricorio tries to claw at machamp with it's talons once close enough. [break][break]

While they were focused on that, melody nodded to her liligant as the Pokémon rushed forward as well, Oricorio was just a diversion! the real attack was coming in the form of another leafy punch from Liligant no matter how meek it may be, damage was damage!

as oricorio grabs the cage roof, noah grows starry-eyed. he grabs his hands together and hollers at the other gym leader.

"dude. dude!" noah pumps his fist. "that's what i'm talking about!"

the feathers scatter across the machamp, tickling across grey muscle as if to pamper. arms flail about the feathery cloud— and meet painful talons. a leafy punch from the lilligant adds to the punishment, and while machamp's partner slumbers, noah is quick to shift gears.

he digs his heels in. clean athletic sneakers rattle the small raised stage he stands on.

"take a breath! focus!" noah says. "DYNAMIC PUNCH!

while the machamp suffers, it concentrates to center itself. the stinging sensation of feather, claw and leaf is dulled— before a fist is thrown. nearby, the primeape slowly stirs.
