Though Gavin's laugh is little more than a hum in the depth of his chest, Rowan Wrynn's dark humour is successful in diffusing some of the tension.

There is a long, quiet moment during which the winds tug at hair and clothes, and Gavin remembers different times.

"I know what it is to be a prisoner."

It is all Rowan will get, but the gravity in Gavin's tone speaks volumes.

"Rocket will put you through all of this again, and much worse." Their flight takes them over Hoenn's sandy shores, where the air smells of salt. "But so long as you are loyal to me, Wrynn, and to Rocket, you'll have as much freedom as I can offer."

Rowan was curious what Cillian Quinn meant about being a prisoner, though he wasn’t willing to push the underboss to discover the meaning. “I see…” The scent of the ocean was heavy on the wind as they crossed over the shores, comforted in a way by the familiar smell that he’d come to love. “I know that being part of Rocket means that I’ll end up being subjected to even more pain, but I made a promise. Not just to you, but to myself as well.”

He wouldn’t do anything that would compromise his freedom and the life he’d built since leaving Galar, even if that meant his own occasional suffering. “You can trust me, even if I’ve not given you enough reason to thus far.”

There is a low, satisfied hum in the depths of his throat. I made a promise. Gavin, too, had once made a promise — but it had been only to himself, slipping behind a man in a dark alley. Survive. No matter the cost.

Slateport's docks come into view, sticking out over sparkling waters in a complex web. Boats bob upon the water's surface, ignorant to the hidden craft that slumbered far below. Corviknight begins its descent as Gavin taps its neck.

They land at an air-taxi post, dismount. Soon, they would receive word from HQ about when they could come aboard.

For now, there is solace.
