THE LACK OF AN OPPONENT MEANS THERE’S NO APPEASEMENT FOR GYARADOS’ ANGER. The Vaporeon may remain invisible to the naked eye but Fernando’s Pokemon keeps its sight on the prize. What it can’t target just means it needs to lash out universally.

It starts to spin up a HURRICANE by swimming in a cylindrical pattern. The water becomes turbulent just as the AURORA BEAM starts to spread against the underside of its scales. This time, Gyarados proves too big to turn to ice, but the attack does land a clean hit.

Retaliation is fierce and widespread. The entire aquarium trembles as tempered glass withstands the start of an underwater HURRICANE.

Gyarados's Hurricane is fierce and offers Vaporeon little time to dodge. Not that there was anywhere to escape too. The storm tosses her around the water with terrifying force. She slams against the aquarium glass, releasing a muffled scream of distress.

Her tail fin sways against the current of the water. With its aid, she's able to turn herself upright. Pain pulses through her in muted waves as she recovers. The telltale signs of discomfort show on her strained face.

The water surrounding her begins to spin rapidly in a circular motion. Like aquatic tendrils, bits of it extend towards the damaged sections of her body, healing her wounds. Aqua Ring, the perfect move for a prolonged battle underwater.

But she can use the environment for more than just healing. Vaporeon demonstrates this by having it hardened around her turquoise scales like armor.

WATER BECOMES TURBULENT UNDERNEATH THE HURRICANE’S WRATH. As the source, the Gyarados rolls with the current, each cycle creating new ripples that wash over the battle field. Once the attack flushes throughout their battle space, it lets out another triumphant roar.

All this builds up to a ferocious THUNDER that sparks along its scales. Yellow bolts of electricity snap across the water like vengeful tentacles, eager to burn anything foolish enough to stay within reach. When the Pokemon musters enough energy, the THUNDER cracks, fired off in an arc of lightning toward where the Vaporeon was spotted last.

Swift as a raging river, Vaporeon dodges the Thunder. Again her body deconstructs and reforms. She appears above Gyarados with an angry glare. This thing is starting to get on her nerves.

Another radiant beam of energy launches forward from her mouth. Aurora Beam is aimed at the serpent's eyes. She's hoping to ice them over and leave it blind.

THE TACTIC WORKS TO A DEGREE. The AURORA BEAM strikes the Gyarados on the face but its eyes remain protected under its frontal fin. Ice creeps along the ridges but can’t seep deep enough to glaze it over.

This just aggravates the fury Pokemon into responding in kind. Now that it’s charged up enough energy to expel THUNDER lightning rips from its body. Bolts of electricity surge through the water like a thunderstorm at sea. They lash out without rhyme or reason, sporadic but honed with an intent to harm.

The storm brewing under the water is chaotic and without aim. Frenetic and explosive bolts of electricity flash all around. Numerous in number, Vaporeon weaves elegantly between lightning strikes. Tail fin pushing her along the water's swirling current.

A stray bolt pierces her right side, shattering her Acid Armor. The bubble jet Pokemon writhes in agony as electricity surges through her. Her jaw clinches as the rest of her body spasms.

"Come on, Chloramine!" Killian shouts from the sidelines. "Fight through the pain." there's little he can do but offer words of encouragement.

Sheer willpower and a burning desire to not be defeated by an ugly monstrosity keep her from collapsing. Slowly, she recovers. She siphons water from the Aqua Ring revolving around her to heal.

FERNANDO’S GYARADOS LACKS THE SAME ENCOURAGEMENT. Sheer fury propels it further. Innate rage, bred into its genetics, surfaces as the Pokemon thrashes about in a methodological coil.

When Vaporeon comes in close—alarmingly fast with its QUICK ATTACK—the Gyarados has no way to evade it. All it can do it start to wrap around the smaller Pokemon, looking to entangle it with its much larger body to take a great big CRUNCH out of it.

Shadows cloud the water and darken her scales. Sensing danger, she attempts to swim backward only to collide with the snake's coiling body. Dark eyes swell at the realization that she's trapped. The shadows above her move, drawing her attention upward. It's too late.

Sharp fangs filled with rage pierce deep into tender flesh. Vaporeon squeals, blood rising to the surface of the water as she squirms. Being locked inside Gyarados's jaw is a death wish. The pain makes it hard to focus. It runs through her in sharp waves at the slightest movement. With gritted teeth, she pushes past the hurt.

Bubbles fill the serpent's mouth as Vaporeon's body dissolves. It takes too much effort to remain scattered for long. She reforms seconds later, just outside his maw, panting. Aqua Ring can only do so much to keep her going. Nearly at her limit, she has no choice to put her all into this next attack.

She breathes deep, water gathering in her lungs at a volume that causes her chest to swell. Like a hydrant - Vaporeon fires, aiming the Hydro Pump at Gyarados's eyes.

PRESSURIZED WATER LACKS THE SAME PUNCH WHEN EXPELLED INTO ITSELF. However, the tactical focus onto Gyarados’ eye pays off. Tenacity lands a CRITICAL HIT which sets the Pokemon back as its right eye remains lidded.

But to think that would spell the end of it is to undermine the Pokemon’s durability. Raw hate fuels it into getting revenge and THUNDER cackle as the Pokemon lunges forward. The battle no longer becomes a measured contest with a standardized grading criteria; it’s become personal.

It’s temper tantrum is cut to an immediate end. Red light condenses the beast into a single beam as it’s withdrawn from the battlefield.

“Gyarados is unable to battle. Assessing opponent data.”

Seconds tick and the computer chooses its last Pokemon.

“Summoning Feraligatr.”

The last Pokeball of the match falls from the ceiling. It pops open to reveal a much more muscular behemoth. What the Feraligatr lacks in size compared to the Gyarados it makes up for a pair of fearsome limbs.

Gyarados goes down, but not before firing off one last attack to get its revenge. Vaporeon anticipated there'd be retaliation, so when it comes, she's prepared. The flutter of bubbles signals its dispersal throughout the water. She barely makes it, lightning streaking through the freshly conjured bubbles and slamming into the glass behind.

Exhausted, she can't maintain the state long enough to reposition. Bubbles come together in amass, reconstructing the amphibian's body in a slow process. When it's finished, her final challenger has already entered the ring.

Feraligatr is a Pokemon native to Johto. Where its first stage is given to aspiring trainers. How fitting for Killian's last opponent.

Once again, Aqua Ring triggers. Healing her injuries and restoring a fraction of Vaporeon's stamina. The slight slowing of her breath tells Killian she has enough strength to push on.

Vaporeon seizes the brief reprieve in combat to reapply her Acid Armor. Water hardens against her scales, and she narrows her vision. Tail fin swaying about in the water as she waits for Feraligatr to make its move.

THE PREDATOR WAITS IN THE DISTANCE. A sleek and muscular body are able to cut through the water with ease. Make no mistake, the humanoid anatomy of the Pokemon doesn’t make it any less agile underwater. However, the Pokemon ignores this, treading water in place, observing.

It needs a read on the Vaporeon to understand the way in maneuvers. Skilled predators understand their prey before making the lethal pounce. As if to test it, the Pokemon expels a pressurized HYDRO PUMP, keen on understanding how the Vaporeon will react.

Another wave of healing from Aqua Ring prepares Vaporeon for the Hydro Pump. Not that she was going anywhere, the attack is drawn to her like metal to a magnet. Hungry, ravenous, the aquatic feline devours the pressurized blast with an open mouth.

Water Absorb turns that which is meant to harm into stamina. Scales that had once been burnt and damaged become pristine and vibrant.

She swims, circling the gator with narrowed eyes. None of the moves in her arsenal are going to be enough to deal with the threat before her. Her upper lip twitches as her teeth grind against each other hard.

Do or die.

Manipulating the flow of the water to herself forward, Vaporeon flies at Feraligatr like a bullet. Quick Attack is the only that this beast won't resist.

EYES WIDEN IN ALARM WHEN THE HYDRO PUMP IS ABSORBED. A curled flay of its tail belays the Pokemon’s annoyance as it prepares itself for physical combat. Among the many combatants the Feraligatr has faced, none have shown such capabilities. Considering its aptitude for physical combat, it’s not much of a surprise for everyone with one exception: the Pokemon itself.

When the Pokemon makes a sudden jolt with QUICK ATTACK the Feraligatr matches with its own burst of AGILITY. Hands swing to grasp the Pokemon in a hold, looking to catch it by any means, so it can take a devastating CRUNCH out of it with its fearsome jaws.
