Killian had underestimated the popularity of Hoenn's gym circuit. To even challenge one of the gym leaders, he'd needed to schedule an appointment a week in advance. Not that he was complaining. The week's wait had given him time to train and devise a strategy.

It also gave him a chance to sleep. Which hadn't come easy. He'd almost overdosed on sleeping pills just to make it happen. That wasn't important now, though. Killian needed his mind clear for the upcoming battle.

He paced up and down the Battle Hut's lobby, hands in his pockets. Killian had gotten here thirty minutes early. His plan had been to get a sneak peek at who he'd be battling, but they wouldn't let him.

Fair enough.

Now he was just waiting for them to call his name. Well, not his name, but Kaito's. Killian had registered using the mobster's name. A childish jab at the man who'd tormented Alexandra Briarwood for years. He'd only used the name Kaito Nakada - everything else about the alias was entirely clean. Killian had gone out of his way to ensure as much.

An attendant calls out his name despite him being the only person here. “The challenge is ready,” they inform, ushering him through winding halls of plain white walls.

The Gym’s interior is simple at first, a straight walk forward until they get to the end. From there, the fork divulges, the secretary knowing it from sheer muscle memory. Eventually, Killian will be lead to a set of double doors.

“Good luck with your challenge, trainer! If you have any questions, there should be an intercom by the challenger’s stand. Just give us a ring.”

Inside, Killian will find a huge aquarium up above. The tank of water remains empty of life, but large enough to encompass several Pokemon and still have space for more. Should the glass shatter, he’ll drown, if the outright pressure of the water crash down doesn’t kill him first.

Several slots for Pokeballs are on the underside of the aquarium. The way they’re angled and molded make it obvious that Pokemon will be summon directly into the pool of water. Countering water Pokemon may be easy but fighting under several meters of waters eliminates most options.

Unless they can breath under water anyway.

Killian has to stop himself from laughing when they call 'his' name. Without a word, he follows the attendant as they usher him towards the arena. The broker's only half listening as they arrive at the arena's entrance. Nodding, he bids the attendant adieu and pushes open the doors. What greets him on the other side takes him by surprise.

He was aware they'd be using water Pokemon to battle, but an entire aquarium? One that hung right above his head no less? That seemed a little excessive. Killian sighs, oh well - at least it'll be a spectacle.

Stepping up to the challenger's stand, Killian tosses the first of his Poke Balls into one of the slots. Best to feel things out with his weakest Pokemon first. Mareanie's appears in a flash of light near the bottom of the tank. Patiently, she waits for her opponent to arrive.

[attr="class","spiral"]Once Killian subjects his first Pokemon to the aquarium the intercom comes to life. An automated voice booms over the speaker, teeming with electronic life with an instructional announcement.

“Welcome to the Battle Frontier! Today’s challenge will be the Type Focus: Water!”

“The rules for this challenge are as follows: each trainer will use one Pokemon at a time until one party is unable to battle. Each trainer may use a maximum of three Pokemon. All Pokemon will be deployed into the special arena set for this challenge.”

A mechanical whirl ends the message as a tile opens up above. From it, a Pokeball is deployed, left to float at the top of the aquarium until it releases the Lanturn inside.

The fish Pokemon immediately dives a bit further down, not quite at ground level like the Mareanie, but well below the surface.

It looks at the opponent expectantly, STOCKPILING its electrical energy into the hanging bulb it gets its namesake from.

Another prerecorded message echoes throughout the room.

“Battle routine set.”

Lanturn is his opponent's first choice. Its Poke Ball splashes into the water, and Killian frowns. Weren't gym leaders supposed to battle trainers themselves? It feels like he's being underestimated.

Medusa springs into action. She already knows the plan, so there's no need for orders. Sickly purple energy gathers into a sphere between her lips as her jaw opens. She fires, and the orb arches up towards the surface of the water. Once it nears the top, it shatters. Toxic Spikes of poisonous energy fill the water like a minefield as it breaks.

[attr="class","spiral"]The TOXIC SPIKES do their job and they do it well. Pinpoint barbs warns the Lanturn to avoid contact at all costs. Their presence alone limits the Lanturn’s movement, lest it open itself up to a bitter poison.

So the Pokemon navigates between them at a slow, careful pace. Its fins open and close, gliding slightly closer before discharging a THUNDER WAVE toward the Mearnie.

It's regrettable, but the Thunder Wave lands. Medusa's body spasms as electricity stiffens her muscles. She fights on, however, tentacles pushing her through the water towards Lanturn. One of them lashes out as she nears the fish. A Poison Jab aimed to knock Lanturn into one of the nearby spikes.

[attr="class","spiral"]The POISON SPIKES do their job in more ways than one—intentional or coincidence matters not, the end result is the same.

The fact that the Lanturn is so adamant about avoiding them means its limited maneuvering allows Mearnie to land its POISON JAB. The impact of the strike is enough to propel the fish backwards and into a cluster of caltrops.

They prick past slimy scales to push their toxin into the bloodstream. Their effects are not immediate but poison doesn’t have to be.

However, one advantage transitions into another. Now that the POISON SPIKES are no longer a concern, annoying yes, but a non-factor, the Lanturn can swim freely throughout the waters.

It circles at a distance, wary to avoid striking distance. Its lamp glows in eccentric pulses, DISCHARGING electric bursts throughout the water and toward the enemy.

A successful blow begets a painful counterattack. A localized storm of electricity surges through the water and into Medusa. Killian grits his teeth, watching her writhe in pain as bubbles of air escape from her lips.

It's super-effective

Medusa is tougher than Killian thinks. She bites back the pain with a sweep of her tentacles through the water. "Ma...reanie." a viper ready to strike, her eyes narrow on the Lanturn. It's poisoned, and she's Merciless in how she uses that to her advantage.

A jet of pressurized water from her feet carries her toward a Toxic Spike. Gripping hold of it with a tentacle, she flings herself through the water from one spike to the next. She darts around the Lanturn like a pinball. Hoping that her movements are erratic enough that they're difficult to track. Once behind it, she makes her move - launching at it with two tentacles cloaked in poisonous energy.

THE CURRENTS BECOME ERRATIC UNDER DURESS. The way the Mearnie inches closer to its prey is more befitting of an arachnid than starfish. Its web of constant movement makes dodging too difficult. The POISON JAB finds purchase from an unexpected angle, befouling a CRITICAL HIT amidst surprise.

“Brrrr.”

But coming in close to attack is filled with vulnerabilities. Up close, the Lanturn just has to elicit another DISCHARGE of electricity in an outward burst. Like sound waves, the electricity crackles to anyone willing to hear, vibrations of electrons coursing through every hydrogen pair.

She's powerless against the second blast of electricity. Medusa muffled cry echoes across the aquarium. Her body spasms violently, tentacles stiffening as pain courses down her body. She's like that for what feels like minutes before her body suddenly goes limp.

Killian frowns. He wasn't expecting her to last long but it's disappointing nonetheless. Returning the defeated Pokemon, he sends out his next.

Inteleon enters the aquarium, but it won't be there for long. He dashes towards the Lanturn in a U-Turn . Successful or not, it's swiftly replaced with Vaporeon's amphibious form.

THE TRANSITION FROM ONE POKEMON TO THE NEXT IS SEAMLESS. The Lanturn is barely able to respond by the time the U-TURN connects. Surprise causes the Pokemon to lurch backwards, wailing in constant SPARKS that blink from its lamp. An ELECTROBALL is fired but much too late. The Inteleon has already returned.

A Vaporeon replaces the Inteleon, buying them time for the toxins to circulate. Poison works with puppeteer strings, invisible while actions distract the eyes. Movement slows, stamina depletes; time is not on their side.

U-Turn connects, but not without Inteleon taking some damage from the Sparks.

When Chloramine enters the water, she's quick to assess the situation and even faster to react. A Quick Attack sends her darting across the water and away from Lanturn's Electro Ball.

There's not much life left inside the angular fish. She can see it the sluggish way that it moves and breathes. Time to end its suffering. Rainbow energy gathers at her mouth and fills the aquarium in shifting colors. A beautiful display of light that masks deadly intentions.

ONLY FITTING THAT THE BEAUTY OF A RAINBOW IS THE LAST THING LANTURN SEES. The AURORA BEAM is a spear of ice that sees no end. The way it pierces the water leads all the way up until it makes contact with the Lanturn. Only then does it congeal, concentrated onto the target until it sits as an ice cube in a glass full of water.

POISON ticks. Lanturn is FROZEN. These two conditions, along with its already depleted health, is enough for the AI to deem the Pokemon incapable of battling. It is returned to its Pokeball.

“Lanturn is unable to battle. Assessing opponent data.”

The computer runs through several calculations before coming to the obvious choice.

“Summoning Gyarados.”

Another Pokeball is droped from high above. This time, the Pokemon takes up much more space. There’s enough room for both and then some, but the size of the target dwarfs its earlier opponent.

The sea serpent immediate coils up in preparation to attack. Even underwater the ferocious roar it vomits is enough to INTIMIDATE everyone in the room.
