It reminds him of what it feels like to drown — gasping for air that won't fill his lungs, struggling against a darkness that threatens to consume.

He's shaking, but it's not only out of fear.

Heat burns behind his eyes, but he has never been allowed tears.

A shuddered inhale is all the preparation he gives himself, feeling the admin's patience wearing thin. His notes are gathered with as much care as he can manage in trembling fingers. Try as he might, he can't find the layers to bury his grief.

"Raziel." His voice breaks, and he clears his throat. "You're going to take over the project for me, all right?" He forces a smile he doesn't feel. "If there's anything that you don't understand, Ortega can help."

When THEO BECKETT enters the labs Raziel make sure to bow his head in welcome to the other. A lot of papers in his hands as he was moving notes from one group to the other. Though as soon as he does that his father calls him over. Tells him until told otherwise to stick by his side. So he does just that, sticks next to his father as the man attempts his work and seems to ignore the Admin who has come to visit. Raziel doesn't entirely understand the chain of command but with the way his father acted it was clear Admin outranked Lead Scientist. Without work given to him all he can do is try to mimic the others at pretending everything isn't happening. [break][break]

Though that becomes near impossible as he hears his name being called. He could hear his father curse under his breath, his red eyes look up at his dad unsure of what to do as the scene continues to play. "Sir I don't..." Raphael strokes his hand through his son's hair in a calming manner as if assuring things will be fine to quickly get the boy to be silent as he gives a soft 'shhh.'[break][break]

"Just obey"[break][break]

Pryde tells him before Raziel hears his name called and he is quick to move over to Gavin. Raziel isn't as good at hiding his emotions as all the adults are yet. There is a sadness in them for Gavin as he is forced to give over his project notes for something he honestly doesn't understand. He helps with projects, he doesn't take charge and he doesn't feel good about this being given to him. He gives a nod to Gavin as he hopes he can see just how sorry he is for this. His hands are shaking at the figurative weight of the notes, "Permission to ask you questions sir?" he addresses to Beckett hoping for answers unable to help but break the whole 'just obey' rule as this wasn't fair.

Despite being given permission Raziel finds himself unable to actually ask anything. Everything that popped into his head seemed to just question the other’s authority. Something his own father didn’t allow yet here he was up against one of Rocket’s admin about to do the same. ”Uhhh Dr. Merlino’s work on the project has been really helpful,” its a statement not a question and he’s being an idiot. Already he could feel his father glaring at him despite him not actually looking. ”I don’t know what he did but umm, you’ll let him back right?”

There is a sadness there as it seems like Gavin will be leaving for good. He had been so grateful to him for helping him with his Espurr problem. And also helped him with a useful way for communication and now it seems like he'll never get to repay that. [break][break]

Though at the question he stiffens up, accidentally folding the folder of notes in his hands. "Yes sir," his mother and father already taught him this lesson. "But just... I'm sure he can do better for you, and then he can come back?" he has no idea of he's helping or worsening the situation here. All he knows right now is that he's scared for Gavin and scared for even going to the admin to question anything. "But I'll see what I can do with this," he lifts the work a bit, knowing full well he couldn't do anything, but he'll keep it safe and well organized until Gavin could come back at least.

He watches the exchange between the two in silence, swallows bitterness like bile.

It wasn't Raziel's fault; he knows this even as resentment toward Theo's softness claws from the hollow behind his ribs. This is what you deserve. You know what happens. He knows, but it doesn't stop the hurt.

'But if he doesn't, then, well...'

"I—"

His composure cracks as protest bubbles up, but he cuts it off forcibly. Don't speak unless spoken to. Theo spoke of him as if he wasn't there, didn't look at him. When Beckett smiles at Raziel, it stings like a slap to the face, and Gavin averts his gaze.

Red eyes look toward Gavin, he wants to give a 'you can do it' but he knows better. He would sign it but he doesn't know if Theo also knew how to do that. And didn't want to make the situation worse as he knows adults are treated much worse than him. "Thank you sir!" with that he bows his head before heading back over to his father's side to give the lead scientist the notes to look over for later. His father leans over to whisper something to him that makes him tense up but he goes back to what he was doing before. [break][break]

Pretending they weren't there and that it wasn't happening.

Predictably, he follows, like a dog at its master's heels.

Lab doors slide shut behind them, a familiar sound. It embeds itself like a shard of glass beneath his ribs; he wonders if he'll ever hear it again.

Theo's question trips him up, almost literally.

He stops for a moment, then hastily resumes his trailing pace. Emotions surrounding Theo are a complex, twisted mess. He's not sure he knows the answer. There's resentment for the gentleness with which he'd treated Raziel, but—

"N-No, sir." This is what's deserved.

He opens his mouth, a question lingering in held breath, then closes it.
