Mutual hatred for THEO BECKETT wasn’t something to be bonded over. Lulu’s hatred was different. No comparison. Natalie couldn’t understand, and her disrespect was disrespect to her by proxy.

Theo was in the family. Natalie wasn’t.

She merely swallowed more of her drink, sleeplessness dragging in her eyes and patience there, but perhaps beginning to thin.

She’d let her try again.

"Did you go to school?”

she shrugged mentally, deciding not to press.

"i did," she admits. "it was needlessly expensive. professors didn't like me much. couldn't reason why."

natalie tilts her heads.

"did you? i'm sure i would've heard your name floating around."

Facetious or unaware? Sometimes it was difficult to read people, especially if you were willfully avoiding eye contact for more than half of the conversation.

That was fair, and about how she assumed college might’ve gone for her.

“Yeah. Online.” It wasn't really a lie; not exactly.

Lulu sort of resented the fact she’d had to cover her name so well, but, one did what they must.

“Where’d you go?”

"online?" natalie said with a noticeable ounce of interest. "i probably should've done that. arceus knows i could've been doing better things."

natalie thinks, memory pulling back to her younger years. not that it was too long ago. tell that to her joints, though.

"wyndon university in galar. nothing special." she leans against her fist, elbow on the bar of the table as she looks at lulu. "checking my credentials then?" natalie mused.

she pursed her lips in thought for a moment.

"want to share a plate of mozzarella sticks? i'm starving."

Lulu nodded.

“It’s always there.” Especially if you had the know-how and the network to hack all of the schools and libraries. No one needed much but motivation and time, at that point.

A short huff from Natalie's call-out, and she finally looking over. “Yeah, actually.” Blinking.

She shook her head, sighing at the offer. “Sure. Why not.”

“Wyndon. Not a bad city.” She wouldn’t ask what brought her to Hoenn. “They said you were a biochemist. Interesting.”

“Any specific focuses?”

"i don't find myself seeing much further use in the educational system," she replies. though, more, free knowledge. well, that she couldn't pass up.

when lulu confirms her suspicions, it actually brings a small laugh out of her.

"good, i'd be disappointed if you didn't."

natalie raises a hand and gets the bar-keep's attention. she orders a large mozzarella before turning back to the other woman.

"a few." natalie confirms, well aware that lulu likely knew what they were. she didn't come across a a woman who went in without a little preparation. "i specialize in human and pokemon genetic research. how each interacts with certain chemicals, poisons, and so-on and so-forth." a small pause. "though, i have a vested interest in avatars."

her eyes flash as they stare down lulu.

Lulu didn’t know, aside from ‘biochemisty’. These days, her brain was spread thin by her own ideas, those of the organization, and by buyers pulling her in a multitude of directions. She had little remaining capacity to pay attention to new recruits.

In the face of someone prepared to devolve into other new endeavors, she was like wax; pre-downloaded expression, there to take in the potential value of a new pawn in some section of research she didn’t necessarily care about.

A plate of mozzarella sticks were placed down between them. She didn’t take one yet. This person had been flirting with her. With an objective to instill respect, reducing herself to mutual munchies in a pub seemed silly and questionable.

She stared, stomach growling; she was derailed from humanness at the mention of avatars.

marie jules’ laser came to mind. Experiments. They were expendable, Walsh said; Cillian Quinn and herself. Perhaps this was another person brought on to pick her apart.

“Mm. Got any questions for me?”

natalie's eyes remain fixed on the other scientist, reading her expressions. she was as difficult to read as THEO BECKETT was. she of course, regarded him fondly as 'blank'. their similarity was striking though. both gave off the impression of little plastic toy soldiers, fixed in their single roll. lulu seemed far too complex, though.

what was she missing?

"your stomach betrays you," she muses, reaching for one of the fried cheese sticks. she dips it generously in the sauce before taking a bite. a trail of cheese is created as she pulls away, but she gathers that up greedily between her teeth.

she ponders lulu's question for a moment, the tip of the cheese stick tapping against her lips. only after a few seconds does she answer.

"a few," she admits passively. she gives off no air of overexcitement or eagerness. her eyes scan the room before falling back on the avatar.

"are you sure this is the right place for them?"

another bite.

“Mm.”

But she was right. Begrudgingly, Lulu took a mozzarella stick and ate one dry, still stubborn. She washed it down with a sip of her tequila.

At Natalie's questioning of about the environment, the scientist merely shrugged it off. Hiding was something she did less and less of—perhaps foolish, but confidence climbed ever-aloft.

“Don’t be loud, and no one will hear.” She replied simply, staring her in the eyes, condescending in nature.

she rests her chin on one hand, while a painted nail pushes the tray of marinara sauce in lulu's direction. she eyes the woman with renewed amusement.

lulu was charming — in her own way — but seemed hesitant to open up even the slightest. it was as if she was intentionally stifling her humanity; pushing it down to a deep, dark crevice.

natalie wasn't arrogant enough to think that she could have the other woman open up for her.

still, that would be quite the show.

"very well then."

she says with a shrug. unlike lulu, natalie wasn't someone the league was actively looking for. thus, the chemist had no need for subterfuge.

"what's the end game?"

she matches lulu's stare, raising an eyebrow.

"why the avatars?"

Lulu leaned forward, resting an elbow over the edge of the bar.

“The endgame?” The was genuine confusion in her voice. It wasn’t like she'd spoken with Darkrai about whatever reason things were the way they were. Hell, she hadn’t even asked Walsh to level with her yet.

So, she shook her head. She could find no reason to lie.

“You think I know?” Took a sip, letting it hang in the air a moment before clarifying. “I don’t.”

Lulu narrowed her eyes, but it wasn’t a glare. Her jaw angled a few degrees, head tilting curiously. Who knew more about this topic? She wasn’t sure.

It took her another moment to answer, and letting the sound of tapping fingernails fill the air between them.

natalie absentmindendly plays with the condensation of her glass, her nail drawing a smile face. the thrumming of her other hand stops.

"don't know."

the corner of her lip screws upwards, giving lulu a skeptical, half-smile. though, her eyes never leave the glass.

"but anything seems better than just going along for the ride. then again, i don't really do the whole 'blind faith' or 'blind loyalty' thing."

she then turns to lulu, leaning heavily on one hand, still playing with the liquid. her lips purse upwards, as if she wasn't really taking anything seriously.

was she?

"that's just me, though."
