He’s a little bit intoxicated. On cheap cooler beer, on the competitive energy gripping Slateport Beach as the Star Tournament officially kicks off and, most prominently, Skyler Dross. [break][break]

Angelo finds himself mostly drunk on flirtatious competitiveness and that pain in the ass smirk; of which he is equally tempted to wipe off with his victory as he is to kiss it from her lips. [break][break]

Somehow a general disinterest on her part towards the latest Hoenn craze had been twisted by his hands. Now, here they stood – him on the sand and her in the water – with pokemon at the ready and an electric energy that pulls magnetic. [break][break]

“Last chance. If this tournament thing isn’t your scene, you don’t have to take part.” He calls, climbing atop his Braviary. “Won’t hold it against you if you back out.” [break][break]

His smirk begs to differ.

Captain Dross entered the designated area of beach like an ancient viking warrior stepping into a battlefield: utterly merciless in her approach, thirsting for her enemy's blood, and, most important of all, roaring drunk.

There he is, she'd thought then as she caught sight of a familiar smirk and ocean blue eyes, the most annoying pain in the ass to ever grace Hoenn.

Clearly, she still wasn't over the fact that Angelo had managed to rope her into this. And yet...

Sand is kicked up in the wake of her passage through the beach, a shoulder deliberately bumping into Angelo's as she walks past him towards the ocean. Locking eyes for a brief shiver of time, mouth unavoidably curling into something sharp and hungry.

Promising sweet retribution in the shape of an ass-kicking.

"Having second thoughts, Vestri? If you're so scared of going up against me, you shouldn't have invited me here."

Boudicca leans down to let Skyler settle behind the crest on her head while her tail whips restlessly against the surf, aggression contained with a firm tug of her trainer's hand.

“And miss watching you stumble down the beach on Spinda legs? Not a chance.” He remarks, completely ignoring the fact that he may have ~~definitely~~ lost his footing himself when trying to get onto Braviary’s back. “Looks like you really needed some liquid courage before coming down here to take me on, huh?”[break][break]

Drinking in the Hoenn afternoon sun before a race was clearly not the brightest of his ideas, really… But Angelo supposed half the shit they did never was, so why should they start now? [break][break]

Unperturbed by a familiar, looming shadow and aggressive ruby eyes of the Gyarados, Angelo finally finds purchase on the back of his eagle. If anything, being on the receiving end of one of those stares brings about a rush of anticipation for the challenge both ocean serpent and captain promise to bring. [break][break]

Ready to race, Braviary launches himself into the air but before Angelo can direct him down the shoreline, rapid wing strikes whip up a storm of sand and sea mist. DEFOG, despite its logged description, sprays their opponent with an obstructive cloud. [break][break]

“Alright, Dross. Bring it!” He calls, without a countdown. [break][break]

When the dust settles, man nor bird are anywhere to be found.

She knew she should've kicked him.

Challenging words are swallowed by a cloud of sea mist and sand particles, buffeting the enraged Gyarados and her rider before either could think to retaliate. Captain Dross grits her teeth in fierce annoyance, regretting the gesture not a second later when sand lodges between her teeth and over her tongue. "Fuckin'..."

By the time they emerge from the mock sandstorm, Angelo is nowhere to be seen.

Silver eyes scan the horizon like cutting blades as Boudicca swims through the crashing waves, the hunger for vengeance pumping within their veins.

There's no way, Skyler thinks, that she'll let herself lose to an overgrown chicken nugget.

As if her thoughts had summoned the bird in question, Skyler spies the edge of feathered wings pulling ahead. Her heated glare, however, is focused on the person on its back.

"Vestri"

Boudicca might not be as fast as a Braviary, but that hadn't been why Skyler had chosen her in the first place. With a firm pat on her crest, Captain Dross relays her next command with a bloodthirsty smile.

"Boudicca, Hurricane."

Let them try to escape that.

Angelo’s lips curl, taking satisfaction in the waves of agitation he can sense rolling off the captain as she and her Gyarados fight to reclaim the generous lead he’d stolen. [break][break]

Their fury is almost as palpable as the scent of her inevitable retaliation; ozone of an incoming storm whipping up as dangerous and fast as her approach.[break][break]

Bring it on, he thinks with an instinctual lean into the wind, ignoring the faint ache of his back muscles tense. He’s flown through worse.[break][break]

Without falter, he accepts the HURRICANE vortex with a guiding, sharp tug of his hands within crimson feathers. Leading Braviary around the the cyclone, riding with the pull of the wind rather than fight it. Letting it build up their momentum as they follow the curve. [break][break]

There’s no way he’s losing to Skyler Dross. [break][break]

And not just because he talked a big, competitive game to get her to take part in the tournament in the first place. [break][break]

With a surge of SUPERPOWER empowering his body, Braviary breaks through the edge of the airstream prison as it pulls him to top speed.[break][break]

“A hurricane? Against me? Really?” Angelo calls as they sweep forward to catch up, pulling alongside Team Ocean when the Hurricane had momentarily sent them along a detour. [break][break]

“Give me a bit of credit, Dross.” His tongue curls around her name, weighty with countless tempting provocations.

“Give me a bit of credit, Dross.”

Before Captain Dross can think to growl out a reply, the serpentine shape of Gyadados rumbles beneath her, loudly proclaiming her frustration at the fact that both Braviary and its rider had expertly used the tempest to their advantage. Aggravation rolls off of Skyler too, reflected in the sharpened blade of silver that cuts through the air to meet ocean blue.

Growing a passionate molten silver at his provocative words.

Ocean spray kisses her tan skin in tiny droplets of salt water, which Skyler ignores in favor of baring her teeth at the airborne courier in something altogether too fierce to be a smile. Her chin lifts up. "Don't get too cocky, Vestri. Looks bad on you." It didn't, not really. In fact, it looked annoyingly good on him, sending teasing sparks down her spine.

Boudicca's crest feels slick and slippery under her grip, made more so due to the alcohol running though her veins. She grips it more tightly.

"I'll see you under the waves."

There's a firm, guiding tug on the Gyarados' crest, pulling downward with firm resolution. Something like mockery dances across the captain's lips as she salutes Angelo, right before both her and Boudicca dive into the waves and disappear from sight.

“Fuck, babe. Stings,” he laughs, not insulted at all. In fact, Skyler’s bared teeth and jab only prove to create more sparks. In the air and down Angelo’s spine. “I’ll do you a favour and go on ahead. Save your sensitive eyes from the sight of me.” [break][break]

Intoxicated on beer and the adrenaline high, Angelo guides Braviary closer to the water’s edge as their opponents begin to submerge; ignoring the uncertain croons of his bird as he flashes the sailor one last wild grin. [break][break]

“Thought you didn't like how I looked? Make up your mind, Dross.” [break][break]

Even though the surface becomes disturbed from powerful wing strokes, salt spray cascading behind them, Angelo peers down into the sea depths. Hazy blue eyes focusing through the shimmering sheet that separates ocean from troposphere with a devil-may-care intrigue. [break][break]

Searching for a siren with a charming song filled with nothing but bite and silver blades for eyes that could surely gut a man.[break][break]

Angelo leans forward with a tight fistful of feathers, dangling himself like a piece of bait with hunger in his eyes and a taunt radiating from his daring posture, ignoring muscle protests as he intentionally calls for Skyler to try and catch him – if she could.

Captain Dross wants to laugh with reckless abandon, but while she is all but married to the ocean, its kiss would still carry her to the depths - and that could not be allowed to happen.

Not while there was still a race to be won.

The thrill of the chase races across her skin like an electric shock - especially when she catches sight of a daring figure coasting invitingly over the surface of the ocean. Although the shape is distorted by crashing ocean waves, Skyler can clearly picture the taunting grin on Angelo's face as he peers down at the depths.

Hook, line and sinker. Skyler Dross could never resist a challenge, not when it dangles before her with gleaming blue eyes and insolent words that she wants to devour with a kiss or two. Or three. And maybe a little nibble too, for good measure.

Gyarados rises in the shadow cast by long feathered wings while Skyler tightens her grip on its crest, ignoring the ache in her muscles as she holds on for dear life. They pull themselves out of the water with mighty swing of Boudicca's tail, held aloft long enough for Skyler to reach for Angelo's leaning body. Calloused fingers grip onto his collar, unhesitatingly pulling him down to her lips.

The kiss lasts for a single heartbeat, salty lips chasing away the warmth from Angelo's own with fierce hunger. Silver eyes catch his own, drinking him in with unrepentant gluttony - and then gravity reasserts itself and the captain disappears back into the waves with a feral flashing of teeth.

Angelo’s heart swells like the wave in which she emerges from - merciless. [break][break]

Body bending into her pull, his blue gaze barely has the time to appreciate drenched clothing sticking temptingly to her skin or golden locks plastered to her face with endearing ridiculousness, before they snag onto magnetic silver moonstones.[break][break]

Their lips come together. A little bit clumsy, even more so greedy and entirely burning despite the ocean’s cold Skyler brings with her. [break][break]

But there’s barely enough time for him to reach out and touch a damp curl, words barely managing to brush against her lips, before it’s over. [break][break]

“For luck…?” His voice husks quietly over her just as gravity forces them adrift, imparting warmth and a slow grinned mystery for whom the kiss of fortune was intended. [break][break]

Angelo’s darkened gaze trails after her as they sink deeper and ascend higher into their respective elements, swiping his tongue over his mouth to taste the lipstick of cold saltwater she’d left behind for him. [break][break]

The tongue that wishes to catch more droplets off sun kissed skin is instead clicked against the roof of his mouth, ushering Braviary and his attention back into the race.

The taste of the kiss lingers even as Captain Dross sinks under the waves, lips prickling pleasantly with the memory of warmth. If she wasn't absolutely sure she'd get a mouthful of ocean water (especially given the speed at which they were cutting through the waters), she would've grinned.

Given how close they are to shore, the bottom of the ocean rises up to meet them with treacherous dips and swells. Gyarados twists around these obstacles with ease, but it distracts her from the bird above and slows down her progress. Skyler can't have her move deeper into the ocean lest they be disqualified - which means that she has no option other than to sabotage her opponent.

Not that Captain Dross has anything against that, of course.

Against her instincts, she pulls on Boudicca's crest to have them move closer to shore. Sea foam bathes Gyarados' crest as it briefly cuts through the surf, following the shadow of wide wings with unerring accuracy. Silver eyes blink water droplets away, competitiveness flaring in their depths as she grins up at Angelo. A prelude to whatever plan she has in mind.

Seconds later, a lashing tail emerges out from the depths to slam against the nearby cliff, cracking its surface and sending shrapnel flying (STONE EDGE).

It’s a cliché thought, Angelo knows, and yet it’s one that rings true regardless of how cringy it would be to say out loud. A realisation backed up after being around Skyler Dross for a fast-approaching year and getting to know her antics, her different sides and moods... And growing increasingly intimate - attached - to her.[break][break]

But it’s quiet… Too quiet. [break][break]

For a stretch of time, the captain and her Gyarados are nowhere to be found; their forms remaining a constant lurking, leviathan shadow beneath the waves. It leaves Angelo and Braviary to soar through untroubled skies, with the stinging sea breeze against his skin blowing in their favour and pushing against their backs. [break][break]

Lips press together in a thin line as the racing of his heart starts to even out into something more relaxed. [break][break]

He craved that competitive adrenaline high he got whenever they stared each other down. Thrived off it. If Skyler wasn’t going to push him, then he’d have to give her a jab of encouragement. [break][break]

Angelo leads Braviary into a decline with the intentions of piercing a provoking attack through the water surface, only for Skyler to beat him to it… [break][break]

Predictably, his lips split wide as an intoxicated rush reclaims him. With a guiding, sharp pull on feathers they narrowly swerve out of the way. Losing their momentum but gaining a different kind of high. [break][break]

“This is awkward. But I think you almost hit me by accident, babe.” He calls back, all sarcasm. All teasing bite.[break][break]

Braviary picks up speed, surging forward before suddenly pulling up, performing a roll at the top of his ascent to face the Gyarados with a beat of his wings. WHIRLWIND returning some of the STONE EDGE right back to its originator.

"Oh, did I?" Captain Dross rises on unsteady feet atop Boudicca's head in the aftermath of the attack. There's no apology in the taunting curve of her grin as she leans precariously towards the glinting of blue eyes, uncaring for the looming fall into choppy waters below. Her golden hair whips like a flag behind her, as untameable as its captain.

Her grin sharpens into something predatory, bolstered by the frenzied beating of her heart against the walls of her ribcage. "My bad."

A curse slips from her mouth when she's forced to dodge the remnants of the STONE EDGE carried on howling winds. Boudicca, not nearly as dexterous as Angelo's Braviary, dives into the depths in order to escape the sharp debris, nearly dislodging the captain in the process.

When they resurface, Skyler's brushing damp curls away from her face and channeling a certain steely feline in the feral wrath that twists her expression, teeth flashing in a promise of swift retribution.

Once she catches Angelo, of course.

"Come on, Vestri, stop dancing away! I promise I won't bite!" Yes, she would. Gladly. Until her name spilled from his lips in a breathless plea.

As if on cue, Boudicca launches herself at the bird and its rider, glistening fangs catching the sunlight as she attempts to BITE the Braviary and drag it into the water.

“Y’know, I don’t think you mean it.” [break][break]

Leviathan teeth suddenly snap around tail feathers, yanking Braviary and Angelo downwards with a turbulent, painful jolt. Alto Marean curse words fly from his lips as his knuckles squeeze pale, a flash of displeasure mirrored by the sound of furiously beating wings and defiant avian screeches. [break][break]

Lashing out with CRUSH CLAW towards the Gyarados’s crest, Braviary retaliates with kicking talons and forceful wing strokes to pry itself free. [break][break]

Angelo, too, counterattacks... [break][break]

With teeth bared, he ignores the protest in his back. Throbs drowned out by the thunderous beat of his heart in favour of leaning precariously across the gap, where the water swirled hungrily below. [break][break]

“C’mere and say sorry for real, Dross!”[break][break]

Calloused fingers snatch out, firmly pulling Skyler’s arm towards him until it’s not just the sun that’s brushed its kiss over the soft skin of her wrist. [break][break]

As teeth flash, sharp and curled with mischievous hunger, Angelo does not mirror her promise… Skyler need not be reminded that he’d devotedly bite his own marks amongst scared flesh, given the chance. [break][break]

With a mighty beat of his wings, Braviary pulls free just before he and his rider could be swept underwater; rapidly creating distance.[break][break]

Angelo releases Skyler after a playfully hesitant moment, when the space between them stretches wider until arms strain.[break][break]

Although the indentations of his own canines would linger for a little while yet.

"What for?" It's impossible to miss the insolent curve of her mouth as she aims it at Angelo, not bothering to appearing contrite.

A ferocious roar follows the Braviary's revenge, razor-sharp talons leaving red groves across the Gyarados' crest and open maw. Captain Dross leans forward then, catching a few feathers in her greedy grasp. Bare feet climb onto the crest and balance precariously over the crashing waves with no regard for her own safety.

She isn't the only one.

Calloused fingers curls around her arm, locking her in place. And for someone as restless as Captain Dross, there's a sliver of a moment in which everything within her stills, an expectant predator. The feel of dragging teeth across the skin of her wrist narrows her eyes in a way that's equally dangerous and beckoning.

Angelo might let go of her arm, but Captain Dross has already curled her fingers around his - and she keeps her grasp for a moment longer, uncaring for the growing distance between them that threatens to send them both hurtling into the water.
