The apology, surprisingly enough, is not in relation to the Head Ranger who stands nearby but instead towards a Glastrier; the one who’d just tried to nip at a passing woman’s butt. [break][break]

Angelo had been forced to pull his irritable equine’s neck pretty roughly before the it had let go. Thankfully her sundress didn’t rip. [break][break]

“So?” Says the blue-eyed courier after the whole debacle had been sorted, looking to his friend with an expectant look as they stand beside their chilly companions on a Star Tournament battlefield. He pats Anderson’s (the Glastrier) neck. “What do you think?”

“You—you named your horse…what?!”

Ever since his ‘status’ had been outed no thanks to that dang-blasted initiative, he’s had way too many offers for commercials promoting hair gel, among other things.

The weirdest offer he got was for body wash. And it would have him riding a horse.

Well, not the one he arrived on, but the point was—

“You—you—Angelo, you seriously named your horse after—me?!”

He was still in shock about—a lot of things. The weird little figurines were the absolute last straw though.

‘I don’t look like THAT!’ he heard a familiar voice screaming in the back of his head, and Lars had to temporarily dismount from his ‘valiant steed’.

“I know, what the hell!” he muttered quietly before pinching the bridge of his nose. “So embarrassing!”

‘You think?!’

“Maybe it was a mistake…”

Either way—

“So, how we doing this?” he asked Angelo once he was down on the sand. No, there was no gel in his hair. And no, he wasn’t wearing a shirt either.

It was just a pair of board shorts, and sandals. Fuck, when was the last time he wore footwear that wasn’t boots?!

Hoennian summer heat be damned, this was his most hated season, only exacerbated more because of a certain snarky deity’s presence.

Lars doesn’t seem very enthusiastic that the Glastrier was named in his honour.

“What d'you mean? You can’t see the resemblance?” Angelo asks, an eyebrow raised as the AQUA official expresses unfounded bafflement. His mouth curls into a slow smirk, taking satisfaction in the fluster that radiates off the usually ice-cold avatar. “You have the exact same hairstyle. Only difference is, Anderson’s here is all natural.”

When he gives his mythical horse a pat, enjoying the chill that radiates off the horse’s frozen pelt as they stand around in the heat, Angelo’s ears prickle; attention grabbed by the crowd that slows nearby and their poorly hushed chatters.

“Oh my god… Isn’t that the guy from the Old Spritzee commercials?”
[break][break]

“I saw they were selling figurines of him and Articuno! So suuuuuuuper-duper cute! I want to start a collection!”
[break][break]

“Did y’know I’m wearing the same hair gel as The Laurence Anderson right now?!”

Angelo’s lips press together, wobbling in a thin attempt to fight off the snickers as a small gathering of people began to linger. All of them looking at the head ranger turned celebrity with whispers and excited chatters.

“Was thinking just your usual one-on-one… But you alright battling with an audience, man? Don't want to embarrass you in front of your fan club.”

“Wow, how dare,” he snarked at the initial remark.

“Look, it’s summer, and this heat ain’t doing shit favors for my hair,” he added a few moments later as he resisted the urge to roll his eyes.

The moment he noticed Angelo was trying so hard not to break out in a display of mirth, he pinched the bridge of his nose again. The action was like—the only way he could force himself to calm down in public.

Normally in private he’d have other ways of dealing with this.

‘They’re not helping!’

“Lo so,” he muttered as quietly as possible, and in his mother language as well so nobody else would pick up what he was saying.

“Se potessi desiderare che la terra mi inghiottisca proprio in questo istante, lo farei!”

‘Just don’t make a fool out of yourself!’

“Va bene, va bene,” he continued, before looking up again at Angelo.

“Look, I don’t know the full extent or capabilities of my equine. I’m alright with a one-on-one,” he said as he fought the urge to scream because he could feel his ears burning a really embarrassing shade of red as he took up his position on the other side of the outdoor arena.

“Ready when you are.”

“So, the hair gel doesn’t actually work, then?” Angelo sounds entirely too satisfied as he says this, brow raised. Seems like Lars picked the wrong product to promote if it fails to keep his signature spike in a little Hoenn heat.[break][break]

Angelo leaves it at that, even though he’s tempted to poke fun at the Head Ranger more – especially when he turns a suspicious shade of pink that comes on too quickly for a sunburn – something tells him that it’s best to move on from teasing him about his new celebrity lifestyle. [break][break]

That 'something' is a dialect that sounds suspiciously close to Alto Marian, uttering wishes of being buried alive. Angelo understands every word, although whether Lars knows that he knows is debatable. [break][break]

“Guess we’ll both find out what our Glastrier can do. That's cool,” he muses before turning on his heel, walking through the sand towards the opposite end of the battlefield. “You go first. Show us what you’re made of, Anderson number one.” [break][break]

Normally when shit like this broke out, he preferred to go second so he could gauge what the fuck the other person was capable of.

However, he was offered to go first—which presented a lot of problems.

One of them mainly being, he wasn’t that much of a person-to-person battler.

He handled Pokémon-related crises on a daily basis, that’s what!

‘Nervous?’

“You think,” he muttered quietly enough. Shit. Now he had to pick out a name for the frosty equine in front of him.

“Shroud us,” he said, finally deciding on his first move. So be it.

A hazy, chilly Mist then began to emanate from his side of the arena.

Angelo wasn’t opposed to pokemon battles. He sometimes partook in the occasional clash with a bet on the line, often times when money was running low enough for him to warrant a winner-take-all bout. As such, trainer verses trainer was not an unfamiliar territory to him. [break][break]

Glastrier, however, was… And with the little time he’d spent with it in Shoal Cave, Anderson v2 promised to be a handful. [break][break]

“Are you cooling down your cheeks or are you hiding, Lars? .. Anderson, chase 'em out.” Undeterred by his ice horse’s snort of attitude, frigid steam billowing like a cloud from his nostrils, Angelo meets the chilled mist as it covers the battlefield without falter. Welcoming it like a ice cold beer down his throat. [break][break]

Sharp spikes of frost materialise around the Glastrier as front hooves rise in challenge into the air, a spray of ICICLE SHARDS shooting into the mist indiscriminately.

As the mist washed over the arena, he couldn’t help but wonder—what was going on beyond it?

What was Angelo thinking?

Either way—

A sudden barrage of icicles came shooting out of the area just ahead where his own Glastrier stood, nervously pawing at the sand. Of course, Ice on Ice didn’t exactly work too well, but considering that they were both new at this, it was… passable.

“Tough it out!” he continued as his Glastrier took the attack head-on, before polishing itself up with an Iron Defense maneuver!

“Steady, steady…” he added as his own equine was skittish, getting ready to charge…

Angelo didn’t need to encourage Anderson the Second. His Glastrier was itching for battle. If anything, as the mythical creature begins to trot back and forth along the width of the battlefield, skirting the edge of the mist cloud, it seemed more aggressive than usual. [break][break]

Maybe the heat was getting to it… Like Anderson, like Anderson; he guessed. [break][break]

“Maybe they’re shy. Let’s encourage ‘em to get out here, their fans have come all this way.” A piercing whinny explodes from Anderson’s jaws, the echoing TAUNT piercing through the veil in an impatient beckoning.[break][break]

Bring it on, the hot-headed ice equine seems to say to its counterparts.

“What was that, Angelo?” he said from his side of the battlefield, although the neigh sounded more…threatening than usual.

He then stopped to pinch the bridge of his nose, an attempt to calm himself down unless he wanted to just break out screaming like the hothead that he was.

“What are you waiting for? Get that Swords Dance going—“ he said to his own Glastrier, who pawed at the sand before letting out a worried neigh. Wait, what?

‘They said they can’t use it. I don’t know why, but there’s that,’ he heard the snarky voice of the deity in the back of his head. ‘Try something else!’

‘Wait, what do you mean?’

‘Exactly what I said! That move isn’t going to work, choose something else! Or do you want me to roast you right now?!’ the deity sassed back, before Lars took a noticeably deep breath and sighed.

“Well, crap. Alright then… bring it to them, then! Double Kick!” he said, sighing as he didn’t want to charge in so recklessly.

However, the Glastrier on his end of the field was finally happy for an excuse to charge forward, full blast neighing and then rearing back as it attempted to lash out with a Double Kick attack!

“What? Are you talking to me, Lars? I can’t hear you!” Angelo’s brow pinches into a crease. He was pretty sure he could hear Lars talking on the other side of the mist, like he was having a conversation with someone the courier could not see. He’s suddenly reminded of the time he and Alexei Ivanov were near deafened by Wingull chicks. [break][break]

Thankfully, his eardrums had long healed, so hearing problems on his end were probably out. [break][break]

“You’re not getting heatstroke over there, are you, buddy?” [break][break]

In sync with its kin, Anderson 2.0 throws out a DOUBLE KICK with its back legs towards the opposing DOUBLE KICK. Two pairs of large, frost hooves collide into one another with a crash rivalling two wrecking balls slamming into one another, ice shards drifting into the air. [break][break]

Horse-Anderson lets out a snort of frustration, a crack appearing in its frozen shoes.

“You wish,” he said in Angelo’s direction.

“Me, heat stroke? Nah, must be a figment of your imagination.”

Well, truth be told—he had to be careful after that.

The loud crashing of hooves on each other made him look up just in time to see his own Glastrier back off, whinnying and snorting. Clearly the equine was pissed at this point.

“Don’t give up!” he said, before his own horse brought down a sudden Avalanche of chunks of ice as close as it could manage at its—doppelganger, if they could call it that.

While normally they would last longer than this, with the terrible tropical weather that Hoenn was known for, it would melt into the sand when left out for far too long…

“Why would I wish that?” He laughs across the battlefield. “You think that little of me?” [break][break]

After the collision of their joint DOUBLE KICK, both Glastrier seem to backoff with frustrated whinnies. Lar’s summoning a slush wave of frigid white to crash over the sand in retaliation. [break][break]

“We can handle a bit of snow, right Anderson?” Angelo calls, not talking to the ranger. In response, his equine’s frosty pelt begins to take on a more metallic shimmer. It charges forth on huge thundering hooves, IRON DEFENSE covering its body as it pushes through the ice like a snowplough, advancing bullheadedly towards its opponent….

“Wow, your equine doesn’t know when to give up, eh?” he said with a dark chuckle as his Glastrier trotted backwards, before letting out a frustrated whinny again.

“I know! Still stuck! But we have no other choice!” he continued, before his own Ice-flavored equine charged forward again, going as fast as possible as it broke through the quickly-melting sand—

And attempting another Double Kick attack as close as it could get!

If this wasn’t a last-ditch attempt, he had no idea anymore.

Although one thing was for sure: Lars was certain that his equine was upset about something, yet he wasn’t sure what exactly it was yet.
