Emma brings a spoonful of the soup to her lips as soon as those foul words leave her mouth. It takes away the sting and the awkwardness, leaving behind only a fond, warm feeling in her chest. [break][break]

If she remembered one thing, it was that she loved wonton soup.[break][break]

Emma exhales softly, eyes closed- not that he would see it.[break][break]

The television screen hops and jumps with colour, attracting her attention even if she can't make out anything at all sitting in front of her. She finds herself listening for the commentary, tilting her cheek discreetly to catch Flynn's laughter. [break][break]

Anxious energy persists alongside the overwhelming sense of comfort she feels wash over her. She shouldn't be comfortable, shouldn't be sinking further into the couch and pulling the soft blanket up and over her shoulders. She shouldn't be bringing soup to her lips and relying on a stranger to offer her a spot on the couch.[break][break]

But in the last year that was all she had ever known, was the comfort and security of another person. [break][break]

"I'll leave by morning."[break][break]

But she wouldn't.

[attr="class","textbox"] he reaches for one of the soda cans on the table, cracking it open with a pleasant hiss. the bubbles burn in his throat — not quite like alcohol, but satisfying nevertheless. he has the metal to his lips when he hears her speak again, and he looks at her.

[break][break] "you don't have to," he says. it's not like flynn's a sociable person but... he's not the type of person to kick someone on their ass either — especially with someone who obviously needs help like her.

[break][break] he's not a fucking cyclepath.

[break][break] "i mean — i got an empty room. might as well use it." he shrugs. "unless you feel weird about it. i can help you find a different place, if you want."

[break][break] he glances down as he notices blue pad up around the sofa and closer to him. she places her head on his knee, and he scratches it absently. "but... i could use the company," he says after a while. "just been me and blue for the longest."

[break][break] he didn't want to admit it but... flynn liked taking care of others. he'd enjoyed taking care of thea and noah... until he couldn't. the bitter feeling that rises in his throat feels like bile, and he takes another sip of the soda to try and forget about it.

Flynn cracks open the soda can and her attention is drawn at first by the scrape of the can against the coffee table. She winces, discreet, as the metal pops loudly. [break][break]

He says that she doesn't have to leave, but she exhales, clearly thinking different. Flynn was too convenient, too willing, too kind. It was recipe for disaster, familiar steps that she wasn't ready to take all over again.[break][break]

This wasn't her home.[break][break]

He wasn't her fiance. [break][break]

He didn't owe her anything.[break][break]

But he persists, continues to insist on making it weird. She shakes her head, dismissing the thought or at least attempting to dissuade him from continuing on. [break][break]

Of course, it is never that easy. She spoons another bite of her noodles into her mouth, mid-chew and unattractive, when Flynn picks it up again.[break][break]

"By morning."[break][break]

It is a promise she cannot keep.
