Honestly, they should’ve expected this.

They’d only released Tropi-Tropi to take advantage of the shade his massive, leafy wings could provide. Of course, those competitive-types could never seem to tell the difference between an actual trainer and someone just going about their day. Especially when they’ve got a six-foot dinosaur next to them. It naturally wasn’t long before Locke was roped into standing opposite to a stranger on the sandy field, Pokémon between them.

“Just so you know, this isn’t really my thing. So don’t expect anything flashy.”

"Perfectly understandable. Just consider this a practice for when a crisis happens."[break][break]

Why would Balder challenge a random citizen? Especially one that didn't seem to be an active challenger? The answer's simple: dahlia goode forced him to prove his worth during this event. A good bodyguard of her must display strength and courage, power and will. But obtaining a high win count, it would show that the League is able to handle anything and that the citizens are in good hands.[break][break]

The alolan man began to stretch, his muscles showing easily as he was only wearing swimming trunks and the light of the sun shone upon them. Before him stood his old partner, Alolan Golem. "Let's begin then. Geo, set up the field." The Golem nodded before his canon lit up, firing multiple invisible rocks to hamper the path of the giant Tropius. What would the civilian do in this case?[break]

The Pokémon his opponent had brought out looked similar enough to the Golem back home, but with stony facial hair and an odd cannon-like object on its back. Locke tensed up when it aimed the glowing attachment in their direction, but it appeared to fire nothing but blanks. The sand was visibly disturbed in some places, however, so it must’ve done something, even if he couldn’t see it.

“We’ll set up too! Use Sunny Day!” A small cluster of bright yellow light gathered in the Tropius’ mouth, before it was launched into the air to hang above the field like a miniature sun. Tropi-Tropi basked under the sunlight while waiting for the Golem to respond.

The sun started to shine brightly, making Balder sigh. "Yeeeeah... You shouldn't have done that." Against a regular opponent, using the power of the burning star was a valid tactic. But... This Alolan hunk wasn't a regular opponent. As if to reflect the reaction produced by the power of the Sun Avatar, Geo's magnetic powder that formed a beard moved to the top of its rocky head, forming a Spiky Haircut. The powder turned gold in color and the creature roared, electricity cackling around him. [break][break]

"Tone it down Geo. We gotta be fair and square here. You're only allowed to use 50% of your strength now." The rock creature grunted at the command of his master. Why not use their full power, even if it was previously granted by a god? But what the alolan says is absolute. "Now, Begin the hazard chain."[break][break]

Considering his powers had increased, the Alolan Golem dug his feet into the ground whilst his canon charged up with an electric pebble. It was smaller in size than regular, but for the sake of this fight, it was better this way. Releasing the pebble towards the Tropius, the Golem began to use a variation of Stone Edge, whereas the magnetic field of the pebble was attracting the invisible stealth rocks nearby to assault the dinosaur.[break]

Locke had seen enough cartoons as a kid to know that when the other fighter’s hair suddenly changed color and style, you were screwed. Flat out, no hope, screwed. The guy was even talking about strength in percentages like he was about to whip out a scouter or something.

He was a real pro too, not even needing to announce his attacks for his Pokémon to follow. With little warning, the newly punked-out Golem began to charge its next move, this time aiming its cannon directly at Tropi-Tropi. Locke wasn’t eager to wait and see what it did. “Try to tank it with Growth!” The Tropius glowed with yellow energy as it grew significantly larger under the beating sun.

The extra bulk seemed to do the trick at first, the electrified pebble bouncing harmlessly off the enlarged dinosaur. But a second later his head reeled back as though struck by some invisible force. Followed shortly by another. Then another. When the assault ended Tropi-Tropi stood bruised and confused, scanning the area trying to find what had hit him.

"Interesting use of Growth." The Bodyguard noted as he watched the phenomenon happen. "You considered your pokemon's size and judged he might not move quickly enough to avoid this, so you preferred tanking and strengthening. You were saying it's not your kind of thing, but you might have some talent for it. Or at least a good understanding of what your teammates can do."[break][break]

The Golem was smirking from seeing the Tropius endure the assault and still be standing. He was craving violence, battle. It had been far too long since he fought, now he could release his pent-up energy. Balder sighed as he was seeing how his pokemon acted. "Ok maybe some barelling will do you some good. Prepare yourself."[break][break]

The rock creature seemed happy to be granted something along the line of what he was thinking. Finding a hard surface, the Golem began to roll against it, Polishing the Rocks that formed his body in order to make him faster, more slippery. Easier to roll too if you can reduce the resistance offered by the crooks and bumps on the rocks.

Locke couldn’t help blushing at the other man’s commentary. It didn’t feel entirely earned; defense and evasion came easier to him than outright offense, and for all this set up he wasn’t confident he’d be able to follow up effectively. But he mumbled a small “Thanks” regardless.

Unfortunately, the praise also meant their opponent seemed ready to take them more seriously now.

The zealous Golem started rolling in place, revving up in preparation for its next assault. Locke desperately wanted to prepare more while the sunlight was still available to them, but they knew if they stayed on the defensive for much longer they were likely to get stuck there. Despite the surprise, Tropi-Tropi had handled the last attack ok, and they had the size advantage, so meeting the Golem head-on didn’t seem like a terrible idea.

“Let’s jump in with Body Slam!” Locke had to raise his arm to defend his eyes from the sand kicked up by Tropi-Tropi’s sudden rush towards the boulder Pokémon, the dinosaur eager to finally be taking some initiative in the fight.

While the guy could be commended for his courage, Balder couldn't help but wonder why he decided to come in close instead of using the distance between them as a weapon. Especially with Geo beginning to be fully polished and ready to roll at full steam. It's true that going closer also prevents the creature from building speed though...[break][break]

The Tropius collided with the Golem, enough to lift him in the air flying backwards. A good hit, fueled by the previous Growth and the weight of the dinosaur. But... The polishing was complete. The rock creature was ready for the assault. And no orders were needed from the Alolan trainer at this point.[break][break]

Firing a round from his back-cannon, the Golem stabilized itself in the air and initiated the rotation forward as it fell to the ground. The moment he touched the soil, the golem began rolling forward at furious speed, unleashing Steamroller against the Tropius.

They’d actually managed to land a blow! And decent one at that, if the distance the Golem flew was anything to go by. The rock-type was quick to reclaim the offensive, however, stopping itself midair in a move that Locke had to admit was really cool, before launching itself back their way as soon it touched the sand.

“Wha-Try and dodge it!” Tropi-Tropi’s hefty wings beat powerfully as he started to rise, but Tropius weren’t exactly known for their take-off speed, especially when they were twice their usual size. Locke winced as the speedy Golem struck the dinosaur square in the chest, dropping him back to the ground with a mighty thud.

Tropi-Tropi flinched painfully as he righted himself, but glared defiantly at his attacker.

It seems like the counter-attack with Steamroller worked wonders, as the Tropius was unable to retaliate. With an opening that good, it would be dumb to not take the opportunity. "Let's finish this Geo. Unleash Mjolnir." Upon the final word of his trainer, the Alolan Golem raised one of his fists skywards.[break][break]

Electricity began to cackle , coming up from the shoulder and running up to the fist. At first, it was only a few sparks, but the electricity intensified, until blue lightning almost obscured the pokemon's fist. Geo began to advance slowly but menacingly towards the grass Dinosaur. After a few steps, the ball of rock began to run, aiming for the Tropius' jaw.[break]

Tropi-Tropi shook the pain away with a fury, and, before Locke could even think of an order to give him, opened his mouth and began collecting sunlight at an alarming rate. The Golem got there first, however, landing a clean uppercut on the Tropius’ jaw and sending the Solar Beam exploding skywards. The dinosaur stumbled backwards, electricity crackling throughout his body as the Paralysis took hold.

Locke wanted nothing more than for this fight to be over, but even unable to move, Tropi-Tropi stood tall in front of his assailant and refused to back down. They weren’t sure the Tropius would even stay in his Pokéball if they tried recalling him now.

The opponent's trainer was visibly at its wits end, unable to decide what to do. And it seemed like the Tropius was trying to rampage by itself now. "Geo, stop." Before the Alolan Golem could proceed with a combo, the order to stop surged, surprising the creature. "Come back here."[break][break]

The Alolan Golem sighed and rolled back to Balder's side. The man then looked at Locke. "Normally, the moment a trainer loses control of their pokemon, it would indicate their loss. And I don't think you wish for this to continue. So I'll let you decide on what happens here, to either stop this fight now, or push further."

Locke glanced hesitantly between the other trainer and his own stubborn Pokemon, before jogging out onto the field to try and coax Tropi-Tropi away. “Come on buddy, it’s not like we were ever gonna win anyway.” That earned him a withering glare from the dinosaur, but he plopped down on the sand with a resigned huff, giving no indication of continuing the fight.

They gave a beleaguered sigh of their own, then called over their shoulder to the older man. “Yeah. We’re done.”

Locke talks Tropi-Tropi down and concedes the battle.

Seeing how the opponent surrendered, Balder nodded and called the Alolan Golem into his pokeball. The man then proceeded to advance, going to the Tropius and its owner. "Sorry for pushing it so far. But your Tropius fought well. With some more practice, you'd be capable to win."[break][break]

The man proceeded to take a max potion out of his pocket and use it on the giant grass type. "There we go, all better. You'll be able to enjoy the festivities and the sun safely now."
