BREAK OUT THE SWEAT WITH A TRIPLE THREAT

LUNCH MARKS THE HALF-WAY POINT OF DAY ONE. Exhausted trainers find refuge in the shaded billows of beach parasols. Dark green patio tables fill out the space between food shacks in uniform distance, the perfect domino spread as people wade between battles and rest.

Further in, near the blistering asphalt of the road between Slateport and the beach, is a makeshift stadium wheeled in for the week. Knee high water makes it the perfect kiddie pool for water type Pokemon, serving as a temporary cooling station while out of use.

Fernando uses it as a chance to splash a fresh layer of water onto his face before reapplying his sunscreen. Despite his time in the sun his skin remains ghastly pale, years of dark nights behind a computer screen bleaching him beyond repair.

    There wasn’t a strong enough word to describe how exhausted this tournament was making Rowan, though he wasn’t going to be slowing down anytime soon. An endless series of battles was enough to make anyone want to collapse, which is why he was looking forward to the break of lunch. “Huh?” A familiar face appeared among those that had chosen to take their rest at the cooling station, one he didn’t know personally.

    “Fernando Silph?” There was a celebrity among their midst, the billionaire and business owner choosing to be down with the masses, battling alongside and against them in the tournament. “A pleasure.” Rowan reached a hand out towards them in formal greeting, a soft smile upon his face. “Rowan Wrynn.” There was a chance that Fernando could have recognized the surname, seeing as the company had recently expanded to assisting the League since the Ultra Beast War, working on a permanent solution to shadowfication.

    “Don’t suppose you’d be interested in a battle?” A tall order considering the undoubtedly busy schedule of the other, but he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself should he not ask. “I can promise that you won’t be bored.”

“…!”

His name is a calling card for his attention. Fernando smears the rest of the sunscreen across his forehead, cheeks, and t-zone—moreso to wipe his hands clean than applying it evenly. None of the residue remains on his fingers but coarse drops of chalky white cream blend into his skin like middle school worn foundation.

“Indeed.”

Hands are shaken. His grip borders firm but the slippery nature of his palm allows his hand to slip out with the immaculacy of his pull out game. It’s slimy enough that you’d never know the difference.

“Well met.”

The polite roundabout of a challenge causes Fernando to break out in smile. It’s practiced and humble, far from expressive, but meandering enough to cue in his arousal. On festival grounds, Fernando never declines a challenge.

“A hard promise to refuse, Mister Wrynn.” There are two belts of Pokeballs adorn across his swimming trunks. Only half of them have been exhausted this far.

“What’s your battle format of choice?”

Rowan hadn’t given much thought to the preferred format of the battle, taking a moment to consider his options. “Would doubles work for you?” There was a specific Pokémon that he wanted to use against Fernando Silph, primarily because he was curious what the millionaire’s reaction would be. “I’ve got a couple of them ready to go.”

A hand reached towards the Pokeballs on his waist and stepped towards one of the nearby arenas that was prepared for a battle and seemed to be free for the moment. Out of the capsules appeared the form of Jellicent and Phione, one of which was rather mundane and commonplace while the other could have been an interesting sight for the entrepreneur. “I’ll be using these two.”

“DOUBLES WORK FINE.”

Fernando has no preference. He’s been through the ringer enough times this tournament to be prepared for anything. At Rowan’s request, he has an inkling of what combination to use. But all that changes the moment he reveals his Pokemon of choice. Much to his challenger’s delight, Fernando’s fascination triples at the sight of the Phione. However, his expression betrays his interest, a muted smile hidden behind faux curiosity.

“Oh? I’ve never seen that Pokemon before.”

A lie. He’s seen it once in person. The little blob is no different than the secret Alexei Ivanov had been hiding from the League for years. However, Fernando feigns surprise for appearance sake. He even goes to the length of whipping out his Pokedex to scan it.

Weighty plumes of MISTY TERRAIN pool around his feet as Fernando reads what little information the Pokedex has to provide. “Interesting,” he announces as the condensation thickens.

“In that case, let’s see how well you fare against this one.”

Fernando reveals one of his dozen Dittos as he waits for his other Pokemon to make an appearance. Once the MISTY TERRAIN reaches a certain opaqueness, the silhouette of his Tapu Fini bleeds through. It floats forward, materializing from within the netherworldly fog.

    Where Fernando was able to feign his reaction, the arching of Rowan’s eyebrow when Tapu Fini came onto the field was unable to be hidden. What kind of Pokémon was that? “The feeling is mutual.” Was this some sort of regional variant of Cloyster he wasn’t aware of? Where could he get one of them? Aquatic Pokémon were his specialty after all.

    “What do you call that?” Curiosity betrayed his bravado, unable to remove his interest in the strange Pokémon so easily. “I’m uh...ready when you are.” Rowan thought he had an oddity on his hands, but once more the enigmatic entrepreneur showed his superiority with the arrival of this Pokémon.

    “King, bind yourself.” Sinister energies gathered around the Jellicent before phantasmal chains reached out to wrap around Tapu Fini, looking to use Destiny Bond on the Pokémon. “Phione, the other is yours.”

    Phione let out a whimsical giggle and floated around aimlessly, hoping to use their natural Charm to disarm the Ditto before the battle became uncontrollable. “Good luck to you, Mr. Silph.”
