AN UNKNOWN FACE AGAINST AN UNKNOWN THREAT

“OF COURSE.”

Fernando brandishes a particular Pokeball from his belt at the advent of Bo’s Golem. It’s a sturdy Pokemon without a doubt, more than suitable to rival his own Pokemon of choice. With a humble smile, Fernando pitches the ball several meters in front of the Golem.

“You flatter me. What’s your name, trainer?”

His Poipole, the youngest of the swarm, floats in place. A grin not unlike its trainer paints the Ultra Beast in a good mood. Curiosity sits in the upright arc of both blue pupils, soon to come undone once the Pokemon realizes they’re not here to play.

“WELL MET.”

Golem, along with just about every other Pokemon, is just as foreign to the Poipole as it is to them. However, some signs of aggression transcend worlds. Watching the Pokemon heave causes the Poipole to squint, head tilted curiously.

“It’s about time I got it some field experience. Prepare yourself trainer.”

Fernando brandishes a hand, directing the Pokemon behind pointed finger.

“Battle routine set!”

A call to arms sets the Pokemon into attack mode. Repetition has familiarized it with the phrase and the expectations that come with it. A dull blue liquid starts to pool at the end of it’s needle, a premature discharge as its body prepares to release.

AN UNKNOWN FACE AGAINST AN UNKNOWN THREAT

THERE’S LITTLE RECOURSE FOR THE POIPOLE AGAINST GOLEM’S ROCK THROW. It can maneuver with an ease that borders slippery but that won’t allow it to bypass the numerous projectiles that threaten it. Underneath the careless disposition of the Ultra Beast, it acknowledges this, pointing its stinger forward before dousing the volley with TOXIC poison.

Each blast of corrosive acid eats away at the mineral’s surface. Some even prove drastic enough to leave small porous openings. But none of the attacks manage to melt through the boulders completely. The end result is two of them smacking the Poipole straight out of the air and into the sand below.

Grounded, the Ultra Beast squeals in pain, aiming a TOXIC at the much larger target.

AN UNKNOWN FACE AGAINST AN UNKNOWN THREAT

THE FIRST STRIKE IS CHALKED UP TO LUCK. It’s the combination that follows that earns Fernando’s applause. For now, he simply observes, allowing his Pokemon to lose to the masterful mind of another trainer until the time is right.

Splintered cracks from the EARTHQUAKE dislodge sand and stone alike as the Poipole is battered by the ground it’s crucified to. It can’t escape and even if it looked to fly away, the STEALTH ROCKS around it serve as a stark reminder not to.

The most it can do it try to roll over, regain its balance which is discombobulated due to it being top-side heavy. All its weight being contained within its head makes it hard to return to an upright position without flying. However, it’s control over its stringer is immaculate, able to point at the Golem and spray out a thick hose of VENOM DRENCH.

THE POIPOLE STRUGGLES TO FLOAT UPRIGHT. When it manages to do so, the Golem has already crossed the distance. The heavy mass of a Pokemon BULLDOZES right into the Poipole, effectively squashing it underneath several hundreds, if not thousands, pounds of pure rock.

But up close means that some attacks prove more effective. A radiant DRAGON PULSE spreads from the Pokemon in all direction. As the epicenter, bursts of draconic energy throb, beating back anything in their way.

AN UNKNOWN FACE AGAINST AN UNKNOWN THREAT

THE DRAGON PULSE IS FIRED OFF IN AN EMERGENCY. The power it takes for the Ultra Beast to recover takes a moment. A breather. And when the Golem performs a DEFENSE CURL to minimize the battle, the Poipole re-aims its stringer. A nasty VENOSHOCK spurts out with each throbbing pump of its needle, exuding a poison that amplifies any existing toxins.

AN UNKNOWN FACE AGAINST AN UNKNOWN THREAT

AND FOR GOOD REASON. No one can stop the DOUBLE-EDGE that sends the Poipole off. Fernando can barely recall the Pokemon too as it’s sent reaming into the sky. It’s plucky body is zapped in a beam of red light as the battle comes to its inevitable conclusion.

“Good show.”

Fernando pockets his Pokeball before breaking out into a quiet applause.

“These Ultra Beast prove quite formidable during the war. To be able to best one so easily shows both the strength and tenacity of your Golem. You should be proud, Mr. Maher.”
