Bo didn’t know Rowan from Rocket—he’d been out too long. However, he had heard his name around the city regarding the tournament. He was supposed to do well. People were betting on him.

So, of course, Bo had to challenge him.

With an oxygen tank strapped to his back, he held onto the neck of his Cradily, and they floated down to the sandy bottom of the ocean floor—not too far off from the beach. An underwater camera floated on by to capture the action, strapped to the abdomen of a Magikarp.

Once they’d reached the floor, Bo grabbed for a pokeball secured at his hip, releasing a Dracovish. Bubbles floated up from its gaping mouth. Smiling, maybe?

An Anorith swam happily about around them. Treading water with long flippers, Bo waited for Rowan to ready himself and his pokemon.

A small wave was given to his opponent from across the underwater arena, unable to speak directly to them due to the diving equipment they both were wearing. There was no terrain more familiar to Rowan than beneath the waves, a place of calm and quiet where his mind was at ease and worries washed away with the tide. “This is going to be interesting.” He muttered into the oxygen mask, never having done an entire battle underneath the water before.

Reaching towards the Pokeball affixed to his hip, Rowan plucked the capsule free and unleashed the Golisopod contained within. The Pokémon immediately locked onto the target, swimming forward rapidly through the seascape to make a good First Impression on the Dracovish.

The Golisopod burst forward at lightning speed, cutting through the water like a knife. It hit—hard, knocking the Dracovish off its feet. However, its powerful legs righted it quickly.

Once, these pokemon had been at the top of the food chain. Dracovish’s speed on the floor of ocean was surely impressive to any who had not witnessed it—those watching the battle from their living rooms and from the beach. While big and lumbering looking on-land, its speed was difficult to imagine without witnessing firsthand.

It charged the Golisopod back full-force, whipping its head in time to inflict a BRUTAL SWING if it had managed to close the distance in time.

As soon as Dracovish moved for an attack, the Golisopod once more lunged through the water with an intense burst of speed. Before the Pokémon had a chance to use their Brutal Swing, Goliath struck them in the side with Sucker Punch, managing to sneak in some more damage before receiving the first of his own.

The Golisopod recoiled backwards as the Brutal Swing was unavoidable at this short distance, clattering against the carapace armor that covered their body. Goliath settled to the ocean floor once more, awaiting for their opponent's next move.

The SUCKER PUNCH, of course, caught the team off-guard and he winced. However, the BRUTAL SWING still made contact, knocking the Golisopod away in the end. Bo smiled behind his regulator at the hit.

Unable to call out commands, the ranger merely watched with curiosity and hope for his luck from a distance, flippers slowly churning water beneath him. Cradily blew bubbles that floated up to the surface, while Anorith swam about happily, seeming entirely unaware of the battle ensuing.

Dracovish, meanwhile, took control—charging yet again, and using its speed to its advantage while the Golisopod was down. It used FISHIOUS REND, throwing its gilled head towards the doe in hopes to slice at it. Alas, its armor would likely prove difficult to damage.

Goliath saw the opponent Pokemon coming and would have smirked if his species was capable of doing so, pleased that the Dracovish was drawing closer to continue the battle. Strangely enough the Golisopod didn’t move from the location even with an attack imminent, instead standing their ground and preparing.

The carapace that covered their body suddenly shone underneath the sunlight that streamed through the surface of the water, Iron Defence causing their shell to be strengthened in the moment. Fishious Rend slammed into the body of Goliath, though didn’t do nearly as much damage as might have been expected, only scuffing and scraping the carapace plates.

IRON DEFENSE saved the Golisopod from the onslaught of Dracovish’s thrashing, sharp gills. The Dewgong witnessing the scene swam closer in an attempt to catch the proper sheen of the defensive move. It was pretty, in the sunlight which shone down from their still fairly shallow spot on the ocean floor.

Riled up, the fossil-type glowed from the mouth with ANCIENT POWER, and its fish-face sent the full force of it into the water scorpion in frustration with its lack of damage from the prior onslaught.

The Anorith’s attention was finally captured, and the Cradily watched with closer interest as well. Perhaps they were drawn to the energy.

Dracovish remained close, and Goliath was counting on this to be the case. As Ancient Power charged up and the Pokemon once more went in for an attack, Rowan watched Golisopod prepare his carapace again. Something was different about this time however, the armor becoming sharper instead of stronger.

When Dracovish closed in with their mighty jaws, Goliath retaliated with Razor Shell, writhing sharp carapace against their mouth and body to make sure they regretted their vigor.

The Golisopod’s attack hit clean, tearing into scales and flesh and causing a bubbling cry of pain into the water. It recoiled, shaking blood from its new cuts which ribboned up to the surface of the water. Bo winced a little, but had faith in Dracovish’s recovery. It was hardy, and strong, and full of rage by this point.

Still, it kept on the offense, going through everything in its artillery to hope to break past the opponent’s strong defenses. Giving a roar through the water, its agape maw began to glow with spiraling purple energy, which then shot from its body and towards the foe—DRAGON PULSE, rippling forcefully through the water and aimed directly from close range.

Goliath pressed forward despite the prepared attack, battered by each and every blast of the Dragon Pulse as he continued to stomp forward along the sediment. Once the Golisopod was close enough to the Dracovish, energy started to gather along the edges of each of their claws, beginning to feel the strain of pushing on through the attack.

Still, he wouldn’t relent. Fury Cutter unleashing a series of swipes towards the Dracovish, looking to slash them to ribbons should they continue this close quarters combat. This was a bit more brutal than Rowan would have instructed, but the Pokemon was free of his commands while they were underneath the water.

The Dewgong cam swooped low, its lovably derpy face looking a bit surprised at the aggressiveness of the attack. Bo, too, grimaced a little, and eyes turned briefly on Rowan from a distance—although in the water it might be hard to tell. He was even glaring a little.

But, what could be done? Dracovish had it handled.

The fossil-type backpedaled, roaring with bubbles through the waves. Every hit hurt worse, and so it was effective in pushing it away. When it could break free of the assault with a too-late PROTECT, its blood was already gushing, causing Bo to be a little concerned about lingering predators, even.

Perhaps it would be time to recall, soon. He assessed his pokemon as much as he could from afar. It seemed to be angry, still, and not quite done yet.

The glow of its ANCIENT POWER began again, one last time.

Ancient Power charged once more and Goliath was prepared for the oncoming assault, slipping through their defenses and preparing an attack of their own. Goliath reared their arm backwards and launched forward with a Sucker Punch, attempting to slam into their body with another unexpected assault.

A screech erupted from the sea scorpion as the Ancient Power struck against their armor, beginning to feel the tenseness of the situation finally as the chitin was having trouble keeping up with the series of recent attacks. Rowan wasn’t about to recall the Pokémon though, knowing there was plenty of fight left within them.

Bo watched closely, unable to control the barrage of offensive assaults. An underwater battle left him out of his element really, as well. Although he had fishies, he was land sorta guy.

The Pokemon’s energy had been expended. While it reared back to strike again, it instead keeled off—as fast as one can while underwater, of course—FAINTED.

Bo held out a pokeball, returning it, and then giving a thumbs-up to his opponent, and gesturing to the surface.

Dracovish was struck down and the battle was over. Rowan recalled Goliath to their Pokeball and submerged on the surface of the water, wading around until he caught a glimpse of where Boruta had ended up. “Good match.” Rowan commented as he pulled the rebreather out of his mouth, raising the goggles to his forehead.

“Sorry about Goliath, he’s sort of intense.” He apologized with an embarrassed smile, the sunlight reflecting off his goggles and slightly obscuring his face.
