It was dusk but the beach was softly lit by hanging fairy lights and lanterns on strings. The moon was large on the horizon and snuggled against the line of the dark ocean. The Star Tournament raged on. Animated chatter and the sounds of pokemon battles filled the salty night air. It wasn’t too late at night, else Vanny would have returned to her hotel. She had separated from Lyra earlier – maybe he had some opponents for the tournament tonight. Sure, Vanny had enlisted herself into the tournament despite her only battle experience being a few play scuffles with Lyra and her other schoolmates before she left Galar. She was nervous and it showed to her eyes and in the way she fluttered around on her feet. Usually, big events like this didn’t weigh on her at all, but she felt so small compared to the talent here. Trainers from all across this region had apparently gathered in Slateport City for to partake in or watch the tournament.

Vanny huffed. She had to be a go-getter and just do it. The small flower peeled herself from the wall. She stepped towards a crowd of trainers and introduced herself. ”Hi! My name’s Vanny. I’m a trainer from Galar. Would anyone want to have a tournament style battle with me?” She offered a cheerful smile along with her words. She had to be sure to insinuate the battle would be counting for the star tournament points.

Zac returned Vanessa's adorable introduction with a warm handshake and a broad smile. "I'm in the market for a battle!" he said, excitedly. "What did you have in mind?"

Before she could explain, Zac opened up his Rotom fridge and pulled out two cans of Charja-Cola. "It's a bit hot, yeah?" he asked, handing one of the cans to his newest friend. Despite the evening wind blowing in off the sea, there was still a terrible heat lingering on the streets, beach, and boardwalks. 

Zac cracked open his own can and wiped the back of his neck with a moisture-covered hand. "Sorry, you were saying?"

Vanny tensed a moment, surprised by the jovial handshake, but she smiled up at Zac. She thought about his question. Well, she didn’t really have anything in mind. She knew she was going to battle.. Hmm. Her face dimmed into a more thoughtful look. ”Um..” Her thoughts were broken as she blinked at a colorful can of pop held out to her. ”For me? Thank you, sir!” She beamed again and took the drink. He was right, it was hot in Slateport’s summer – even at dusk. She hummed in agreement about the heat.

”What is your name, sir? And for the battle, how about we use two pokemon? And a battle on the beach seems fun!” She only had three with her, so she hoped using two would do. ”Anything you’d want to add?” She popped the can in preparation to drink. Zac was a good deal older and bigger and probably more experienced but his personality allowed her to feel comfortable. He was friendly – in fact every Hoennian trainer she’d encountered so far had been nice. This place had a great energy. Maybe it was the star tournament or maybe it was like this always.

"Two Pokemon sounds great! One at a time or a double battle?" Zac asked, weighing up the challenger. She looked young, a fairly new trainer most likely. Zac ran a quick check on her details, and the league network popped up the expected result: no badges. He picked a team accordingly.

They found an unused arena down near the water. The sand was firmer here, and a little cold underfoot from the encroaching tide. "I've got Ledian and Maractus," Zac said, sending out the polar opposites. Maractus dug his stubby feet into the sand, and Ledian floated a few inches above, her reflective watching something unknowable. "Who are you battling with today?"
