ordinarily, jayden did not consider himself the competitive sort. he preferred to stay behind the scenes and in fact, the world had even helped him by giving him the sort of unremarkable, unimpressionable aura of someone who was generally forgettable.

[break][break] but this was different. today he wasn't just here for himself — he was here for rocket.

[break][break] jayden — or better yet, "michail" stood atop a wooden balance beam that was placed over a very large pool in the center of slateport beach. a sign at the entrance labeled PAY MONEY TO WATCH FERNANDO SILPH GET WET! had attracted many an interesting viewer, drawing quite the large crowd. this was an impromptu water jousting tournament, and each of the contendors had been given proper gear — one was TEAM BLUE and the other TEAM RED. jayden wore a blue headband, blue swim shorts, and a double-sided jousting stick.

SLIPPERY SWORD FIGHTING, WHO SPLOOGES FIRST?

HOW FERNANDO GETS ROPED INTO THESE THINGS, even he doesn’w know. But there’s no protest when the agenda is to raise money for a good cause. As long as it’s other people forking over their hard earned poke–Silph tends to be a bit more particular about where his money is spent despite its abundance–he has no qualms.

Several Pokemon stand on his end of the platform, staying their ground as their trainer remains still upon the suspended wooden beam. Rather than approach or back off, Fernando remains entirely still. While the contest is one of balance and coordination, the trainer’s physical ability playing a key part, he has no interest in showing off his athleticism.

“Battle routine set!”

His foam sword is lowered but pointed at Jayden, kept at hip level.

“Execute!”

A Poliwhirl stands in front of his other Pokemon, shooting a MUD SHOT from its center belly. Sludge like mud pours forth, looking to knock off Jayden unless his Pokemon intercepts. Should it be blocked, the Poliwhirl is confident that the mud will splatter, leaving their footing precarious.

the foam sword pointed at him, jayden tenses. he's ready for an attack.

[break][break] the mod sloshes around his feet, threatening to throw him off-balance. however in the end, it is not he who is thrown off balance. at the corner of his eye, he watches ala falls off the beam with a mighty splash!

[break][break] 'was that intentional?' the thought is brief, as he notices the golduck swim away. perhaps a little too eagerly.

[break][break] either way, it was a failure.

[break][break] gripping the sword, jayden jerks his sword forward. behind him, his weavile releases a relentless ICE SHARD at their opponents, in an attempt to throw one of them off balance.

SLIPPERY SWORD FIGHTING, WHO SPLOOGES FIRST?

NUMEROUS ICE SHARDS PELT THE POLIWHIRL RIGHT OFF THE PLATFORM. It lands with a splash but relatively unharmed, right at home in the water.

Fernando still doesn’t move from his spot. His confidence in his Pokemon usurp any belief he had in being able to knock Jayden away on his own accord.

His Shuckle slips up front to spew out a STICKY WEB that’ll hinder the other side’s movements. The perfect setup for a game geared toward the other’s maneuverability.

a loud splash sounds, signaling their victory. albeit, only slightly. jayden's gaze shifts as he watches the poliwhirl disappear into the sea, relatively unharmed.

[break][break] there is a hiss of sound as the sticky web is aimed for them, but jayden's other hand jerks out. "burn them," he commands. his duskull's will-o-wisp spirals out and singes the majority of the sticky web, although some still cling to the platform's edge. if anything, it makes his foot seem slightly more stable, now that it has something to purchase on.

SLIPPERY SWORD FIGHTING, WHO SPLOOGES FIRST?

WICKED FLAMES FEAST ON DISCARDED ADHESIVES. They claims their price with the blackened marks etched onto the platform’s surface. This brings their moves to a draw and Jayden looks to take the lead with his own actions. Fernando does not fumble or react.

Discipline requires faith. A man saturated in fact and logic finds little to believe in. People? His trust is seldom given out–spoken but never with truth behind it to stand the test of time. But his Pokemon? He owns them and he’s hand selected them through trials fit for a sociopath that only he can be.

Several BULLET SEEDS interrupt, possibly battering Jayden should he continue with his sword stroke. Fernando’s Trumbeak glares at the foam offender, squawking in protest.

the tiny seeds bullet at his arm as he tries to throw the former councilman off, stopping jayden's assault. he grimaces as the attack scores his skin, bruising his already bruised body, but jayden is not the type to give up.

[break][break] not when there are more important things at stake.

[break][break] there is a loud splash behind him and he doesn't need to turn around to know that the bullet seed had also downed one of his pokemon. from the sounds of it, likely his pancham. a flicker of a movement out of the corner of his eye confirms it — the black and white panda floating on it's back, all nonplussed by his supposed loss.

[break][break] jayden juts his arm forward once more. in the air, there is a crack of sound as his rotom laughs wickedly and aims ELECTRO BALL at their competitors, aiming to throw them off course.

THE ELECTRO BALL STRIKES HIS EISCUE. The top heavy Pokemon sways back and forth, trying to balance itself, before slipping off and plunging into the waters below. Its ICE FACE cracks in the warm water, revealing the avians face as its swims to shore.

Fernando remains in place. An itch crawls up his leg but he remains still. Seizes is more like it, tensing as his muscle push him to move. But sheer will and principle holds him still.

An Electrode rolls up front and releases several waves of SONIC BOOM toward Jayden’s side. So far his Pokemon has strictly aimed as Jayden’s own, having been instructed to focus on that before all else.

electricity crackles in the air, sending static along his arm as the electro ball makes purchase on their competitor. a loud splash rings as the pokemon is knocked off the platform. one down, more to go.

[break][break] jayden makes a quiet record of it.

[break][break] the sonic boom is loud, but it unfortunately falls short. jayden, who has had spent many a time in similar situations is unflinching in his reaction to it, stepping forward and attempting to jab his opponent.

[break][break] behind him, his zoroark's gaze glows light blue with the power of night daze. a shadowy projection flashes out, aiming to claim whatever pokemon gets in it's way. if it's the silph ceo himself... so be it.

FERNANDO TAKES THE JAB WITH A FURROW OF BROWS. For them to break through his Pokemon’s suppressive fire means he deserves the blow. He takes it in a show of good sportsmanship, pushed into wavering as Jayden applies pressure. Thankfully, the foam based nature of their swords mean that it’s far from painful. Just uncomfortable.

The NIGHT GAZE causes his Pokemon to scatter but the Electrode can’t help but glare. It tries to redeem itself by clenching its teeth, squeezing as it fires a DISCHARGE into Jayden’s team.

the sparks of their opponent's discharge dance through the air, threatening to strike them. it's his tyrunt that takes the majority of the blow, letting out a cry as the electricity dances across her skin. with another sound of outrage, she raises her tiny arms as light glows around her.

ROCKS SLIDE ONTO THEIR PLATFORM. They descend like a mid-summer rain, sprinkled in despite the still going glare of the sun above. They knock and push Fernando’s Pokemon around but none get knocked off.

Fernando Electrode, annoyed by the futility of its attacks, rolls forward. It rotates onto the balance beam, jumping above and in front of Fernando to block the blow. The foam sword bounces off harmlessly as it looks to leap over Jayden as well.

It wants to dunk on their platform like a Zapdos’ clearing team in Pokemon Unite. But instead of slamming down Aeos energy, the Electrode EXPLODES.

Boom.

the explosion is life-threatening — or at least, it would be, if not for his orbeetle who suddenly flies into focus. the shimmer of PROTECT gleans over jayden and his teammates, at least protecting them from the majority of the blow.

[break][break] there is, however, still a knockback. water splashes up from the sea like giant tsunami waves, dousing jayden and his teammates in water, but otherwise they are no worse for wear.

SLIPPERY SWORD FIGHTING, WHO SPLOOGES FIRST?

PROTECT SAVES THEIR LIFE. Well, it’s not that drastic. Only their little match of balancing teeters in the balance. Unfortunately, the shockwaves riddle Fernando’s stance and he starts to slip. His own steadiness rebalances himself but this proves the perfect opening for Jayden.

One definitive swing is all it takes to knock Fernando cleanly off the balance beam. He falls to the side and lands in the water with a splash. Those who’ve been watching cheer in Jayden’s name, thoroughly entertained with the dramatic finish.

Grey smoke rises from Fernando’s fainted Electrode. It sits unconscious in the middle of Jayden’s team.
