"Hello Bo," Bill said, eyeing him calmly from the other end of the Extreme Status-Ball court. Based on the reports of his associates, this ex-employee was not yet a liability. "I trust you are doing well in your new business ventures?"

Bill stretched languidly, like a panther preparing for a hunt through the treetops. His Lars and Articuno polo shirt remained miraculously tucked into his Lars and Articuno swimming trunks. He wore Lars and Articuno sweat bands, though there wasn't a drop of moisture on his wrist, forehead, back, or neck.

“Hey, Bill!” Bo had never called Bill ‘Father’ because that seemed really weird. “Wouldn't call it business, but sure!”

Extreme Status-Ball. What a sport. What a thing for them to end up playing together—but he knew the minister could get down.

For whatever reason, he wasn’t surprised to see all of the merch. He, himself, didn’t wear anyone, but he’d seen so much of it that he almost didn’t notice it anymore.

"Summer is the best season," Bill said, with the confidence of a man who knows the difference between truth and opinion. "Bright light, exfoliating grains, and pleasant salt. The wind is sweeter in the Summer."

Bill motioned to the referee, and the man tossed him a Darumaka. On Bill's side of the court were his three combatants: Milotic, Palossand, and Lurantis.

With practiced form, Bill set the 'volleyball'. Milotic smacked it downward, spiking it towards Bo's team.

Status depends on the ball used.
Darumaka = burn
Spheal = freeze
Togedemaru = paralyze/flinch

Bill was Bo a little uncomfortable sometimes.

The Darumaka ball sailed towards the team: Dewgong, Dracovish, and Om-Om.

Surprisingly, Om-Om was quickest with its retaliation, MUD SHOT shooting towards the ball to send it back into the court.

“Guess you’re right, yeah… Autumn's not bad.”

The Mud Shot sent the ball whizzing back at an odd angle. It struck Palossand, cratering the sand on its left side and leaving a little puddle of glass. "Quite a return you've got there," Bill complemented. "Do you play sports much, Bo?"

The Darumaka uncurled and wandered off. The referee tossed Bill a Cascoon, its skin shimmering with multiple Hardens.

He tossed the spiky cocoon back into the air, and Palossand formed its wounded body into a giant sandy hand. With a slam of Earth Power, it slapped the Cascoon back towards Bo.

Bo credited his Omanyte, declaring, “That’s all Om-Om.”

“But yeah, I like sports! Football, especially, I guess.” The kind with the black and white ball, of course. Not the other kind that some people thought it was.

The Cascoon was hurled back towards them, and Dracovish ran over to knock it back with a throw of its head and slap of its gills.

“What about you Bill? Did you ever play sports or… do you?”

The Cascoon rocketed back over the net, bug eyes rolling as the insect collides with Milotic, knocking over the serpent. "Maybe it's just me," Bill said, good-naturedly. "I'm sure I used to be better at this."

Milotic rose back into her tight coil, the punctures from Cascoon's spikes already bloodshot from the spreading poison.

The referee handed Bill the replacement, a blubbery Spheal. It let out little breaths of chilled air. "Anything near the ocean. Volleyball, sailing, scuba diving. Even a bit of surfing. It's important to stay fit, don't you think?"

"Lurantis, Sunny Day," Bill said, and the sunlight overhead brightened to a frightening intensity. Bill put on a pair of branded sunglasses. He set the ball expertly, and signaled for Milotic to bump the ball back to him. The serpent did, and Bill jumped up, sprinkles of sand flying as he left the ground and spiked the ball, sending it soaring towards the corner of his opponent's court.

“For sure! Surfing’s fun! I like volleyball a lot, too!”

He pulled shades over his eyes from atop his head as the heat and light of the sun increased. Why? Maybe to blind them? Bo’s brow wrinkled a moment. Father Bill was playing dirty.

This time, Dewgong was there for the volley. Readying its tail, it attempted to time it right and angle the Spheal ‘ball’ close to the least-occupied edge of the other court.

Bo was something else. Bill was genuinely impressed by the athleticism of the trainer and his Pokemon. Behind his strategic sunglasses, Bill's eyes bored into his opponent. "That was a masterful shot," Bill said.

The ball struck Lurantis this time, and a thick layer of frost crackled over the mantis's carapace, solidifying it. Bill watched as the attendant replaced Spheal with a wobbly Solosis.

The plan was falling apart. Every one of his Pokemon was damaged, and Bo's team looked pristine. He was out of practice, that much was true. All three of his Pokemon were new additions. There would be some serious changes made once they returned to Sootopolis.

"Milotis, serve," Bill ordered. The serpent pulled himself up, readying her tail. "Higher," Bill commanded. Milotic pulled up further, towering over the net. "There may be a return. Prepare a counter." Milotic froze at Bill's tone before nodding. He served, smashing his stained-glass tail down on the wobbly ball as hard as he possibly could.

“Thanks, Bill! I try.”

It seemed kind of cruel to keep going at this point. All of the minister’s pokemon were injured—but keep going he did. Bo’s brow pinched for a moment, but he said nothing more.

Bo looked up at the Solosis incoming. This one was his. Fingers wove together and he dove for it, just in time. The ball went skyward—just shy of the net. Om-Om released another MUD SHIT at it in hopes to assist it over into the next court.

“You know, you're not so bad yourself for your age!”

He grinned.

The Solosis slapped into Milotic, Confusing the poor serpent. It fanned itself with its stained glass tail, seemingly mesmerized by the tail. "Thanks Bo," Bill said, taking the compliment. There was nothing wrong in taking praise from a superior combatant. "I do what I can to stay fit."

Bill accepted the Jigglypuff from the attendant, and for the fifth time this match he served. Palossand surged up underneath him, and he spiked his own set, driving the wobbly ball down towards the far corner of Bo's court.

A Jigglypuff this time. Bo honestly wouldn’t have minded a nap at that point, but he also wanted to win. They remained alert.

“Yeah, good! Gotta stay movin’.”

As the Jigglypuff came down quickly, Dewgong reacted with an ICE SHARD. Crystals shot through the air towards the pink puff to send it back over, leaving behind glass-like sparkles in its wake which quickly evaporated under the glaring sun.

The Jigglypuff slapped into Palossand, sending it to sleep. Bill looked around at his completely dismantled team. Milotic had succumbed to the poison, and was as immobile as the frozen Lurantis. At five points to zero, the match was well and truly over.

"Well I'd say that's game," Bill said. "Victory for you. Congratulations." It was strange to be so thoroughly beaten. Was he that out of touch? Clearly. Well, as the old adage went: if you can't beat them, buy them. "I meant to ask before. What exactly are you doing for work these days Bo?"

Palossand is Asleep!

The match ended, and the opposing team lied about in sandy wreckage, all in different states of defeat. Bo’s eyes met the minister’s again, and he grinned.

“Thanks, Bill. Good job guys!” he called to his team, and they all cried out in victory, especially the Dewgong, who was very competitive and excited for beach games whenever such opportunities had presented themselves during the festivities.

It had occurred to Bo that Bill would be unaware of his status as a ranger. He was a senior at this point, even.

“I’m a ranger. Been ten months, now.” He called back simply, watching to gauge the man’s reaction.
