His first Pokemon battle.

Was it normal to feel this nervous?

Roman swallowed, doing his best to mask the anxious beating of his heart behind an angry face. It wasn't too hard, honestly. What with his dad standing next to him.

Mom had agreed to let his dad take him to the tournament. Roman assumed it was to watch. He couldn't have looked more surprised when dad said they'd be fighting together.

He didn't want to do anything with the man. Or so he thought. Somewhere in him was genuine excitement. "We're gonna kick your asses!" Roman shouted to the couple on the opposite side of the sands.

They looked to Bo immediately. A 'please, control your child' expression on both their faces.

"Right, dad?" Roman glanced up at his father expectedly.

“What did that little boy say, Amos?”

At first, Bo thought they were glaring at him. Then, he realized: perhaps the 'please control your child' look had rather been one of squinting in an attempt to hear better—because that always worked.

“Haha! Not sure, Honeybun.
Probably just wishing us good luck, I'd imagine!”

ELDERLY COUPLE AGNES AND AMOS SEND OUT
PINCURCHIN AND ELDEGOSS!

“Roman! Don’t talk that. Especially not to old people.”

Damn.

But then, quieter: _{“We're gonna win, though, for sure.”}

Bo waved and smiled sheepishly. From the looks of it, the couple had not heard—or at least not correctly. In fact, they seemed rather charmed by the feisty ten-year-old across from them.

A hand came up to wipe his forehead before he reached for his Swalot’s ball.

“Did you bring Po, or you wanna use one of mine?” His hand was already going for another ball. Roman would know most of what he had in his arsenal—except for those left over from the Rocket days.

"What? Just cause they're old and crusty?" he frowned but then smiled, "Hell yeah, we're gonna win!" and kick their old Pokemon up and down the sand.

Roman shook his head, "I brought Po." of course, he'd brought the puppy. It was his partner. No way he'd have his first battle without him.

He released the Rockruff from its Pokeball. Po barked, bounding toward Roman, front paws lifting to press against his leg. "No, Po. We're fighting." he pointed to the two Pokemon on the opposite side, and Rockruff followed his finger.

"Ruff!" paws back on the ground, Po spun to face the targets with a growl.

Then, suddenly, Roman realized something.

"What..um...what attacks do Rockruffs know?"

Wow. Bo was really glad these people needed new hearings aids.

ELDERLY COUPLE
PINCURCHIN uses WATER GUN on SWALOT.
ELDEGOSS uses HYPER VOICE on both foes!

As the old couple continued waving and enjoying the sight of the ‘nice young man and his son, so cute, first battle’, Bo leaned over again to disperse his wisdom. “No, Ro—” But he was cut off by his aggressive child’s enthusiasm. His mouth went flat a bit and he shook his head, giving up.

Again, he waved back to Agnes.

“You’re so handsome! You’re making my poor husband jealous!”

Bo nodded, smiling. “Thanks, ma’am. Sorry sir!”

“Uhh, yup!” Amos gave a thumbs up and a grin. “Good luck!”

Gold eyes found Roman again with an amused and somewhat resigned smile. He lit up a bit at Roman’s question, eager to help. “Okay. Bet he knows HOWL. You could try some rock moves, like ROCK THROW or STONE EDGE. I usually use STEALTH ROCK first with Gigalith...”

While explaining, he took for granted how quickly the battle would begin. Agnes called out, clearly meaning business.

“Too slow, boys! Eldegoss! HYPER VOICE!”

Suddenly, there was a terrible high-pitched ringing.

“Shit.” Bo moved hands to put over Roman’s ears, and then, unable to bear it himself, pulled Roman’s hands up. “Cover your ears.” Though surely he couldn't hear him, the hints were all there. Hands went up to clap over his own quickly.

Amos reached for his hearing aid, muttering something about it being on the fritz. Pincurchin acted of its own accord, sending a WATER GUN towards Bo’s Swalot—and it hit cleanly.

Bo pursed his lips.

“POISON GAS!”

It seeped towards the opponents, POISONING both of them.

"Oh umm...okay." Howl seemed like a good move to use, right? Like a strong one.

"Po, use - "

And then the Hyper Voice hits and Roman's forced to cover his ears to combat the noise. "GAAH you crusty fucks!" the vulgar words come instinctively.

"Rock Throw!" the Rockruff barked and hurled out a sharp piece of rock at the nearest Pokemon.

“Ro!”

Thankfully, his son’s obnoxiousness was cut off by something even more grating.

The HYPER VOICE finally subsided, and water washed off the Swalot, leaving it wobbling a little in place. Ow.

Po used ROCK THROW, and it hit both the Pincurchin and the Eldegoss, whose COTTON DOWN scattered a bit across the ground, SLOWING both Po and Swalot in their assaults.

Bo leaned down towards Roman. “Nice! That cotton’s gonna make it harder to get close to them, though. Trick is to do something from back here, now. Make them come to us.” Even another ROCK THROW might not be a bad call.

Swalot, at least, wasn’t going anywhere. It sat still, STOCKPILING its energy.

The couple retaliated.

ELDERLY COUPLE
PINCURCHIN uses ZING ZAP on PO THE ROCKRUFF!
ELDEGOSS uses RAZOR LEAF on SWALOT!

A strike of electricity came down towards Po, while leaves went to slice at the still STOCKPILING Swalot. The leaves seemed to do little to bother it.

Roman nodded, listening to his father's instructions.

Attack from a distance, okay. Did that just mean to keep spamming Rock Throw? The young boy frowned and considered his options. That didn't sound very fun though. Electricity surged through Rockruff's body and the puppy whined, shaking it off with a growl.

"Umm, Po use...uh...Stone Edge!" that had been one of the moves his dad had said.

Growling deeply, Rockruff bound toward the Elegross, rings of stone floating around his body as he bum rushed the Pokemon. You know, the exact opposite of what his dad had suggested they do.

Bo looked down at Ro, shook his head, and then watched the dog bound forward and knock more cotton about. However, it ended up being doing the job. STONE EDGE knocked the Eldegoss right out of the air, and FAINTED it on the ground. Agnes gasped. “Eldegoss!”

“Huh. That works, too. Alright, Po!”

Swalot continued to STOCKPILE.

The Pincurchin, alone against the two now, sat there and prepared itself, sparking with electricity and daring them to near.

"Oh shit."

That actually worked. "Holy fuck, we beat it!" he boomed with obvious excitement. Emerald eyes narrowed onto the next target. "Po, do it again!" why mess with a good thing?

Rockruff charged forward, another ring of rocks circling rapidly around his body. Stone Edge ready to cut and tear into the flesh of the charging Pincurchin.

With a harsh sigh, Bo nearly raised his voice. “Ro: stop talking like that, man. I’m serious; come on.”

“Look out for that—”

PINCURCHIN uses DISCHARGE on BOTH FOES!

Bo recognized the sparks growing in intensity, but had been too distracted to warn in time before the Pincurchin struck, with the Rockruff at close range as its STONE EDGE went to clobber.

Swalot was PARALYZED. Fortunately, this didn’t stop its attack. After having STOCKPILED three times, it SPIT UP an terrifyingly immense amount of poison to cover and disappear the Pincurchin. When the toxins had dripped off of it, it would appear there, FAINTED on the ground.

PINCURCHIN FAINTED! BO & ROMAN MAHER WIN!

They’d won—one each.

Bo looked down at Roman excitedly, seeming to have forgotten about the cursing, and clicked his tongue through a smirk. “Congrats on your first win. That was pretty impressive.”

The elderly couple gathered their pokemon within their pokeballs, thanked the father-son-duo, and left to go heal their companions.
Bo looked to Roman, smiling proudly. “Wanna get some ice cream?”

"Stop telling me what to do." Roman ordered, "I'll talk how I want." what's wrong with a little fucking cursing anyway? All the cool kids did it. When they won, Roman pumped his fist and returned his Pokemon.

"It was nothing." he rubbed underneath his nose, "They were nasty old farts. An easy win." a wide, goofy smile sprawled across his lips.

The offer for ice cream had him tapping his feet.

"Sure, I guess."

Yup.

“You know what? No; I’m taking you home.”

Well, this sucked. This was not what he wanted to do, but he was supposed to put his foot down at some point, right? Or else he wasn’t doing his job, or something.

He took a step, returned Swalot, and looked back again.

“Get Po. Come on. Let’s go.”
