[attr="class","lance"]the casino floor is packed full of people; some mingling, some partaking, but all of them seem to be indifferent in a way he can't quite describe.

perhaps it's indifference to the turmoils of the region, or perhaps it's to something else entirely; whatever it is, he drowns the thoughts that surface, leaving it for later.

for now, he stands on the second floor, leaning against the railing that opens out to the main floor of the casino.

Target spotted.

Out of nowhere, a phone (not the flip phone, the good one with the slightly glittery case) would fall on the ground at his side. “Oops!”

She bent to retrieve it, fairly short number creeping up a thigh as she did so. When she raised, her face read that she had only just realized he was there.

“Sorry. I’m so clumsy!” A small, self-deprecating laugh, and then, her eyes sparkled with a look recognition as she pushed some hair behind an ear.

“Wait... you look really familiar. Do I know you?”

naturally, he looks, and after a moment of feigned recognition, turns towards her, leaning now on his side.

"no, no, don't worry about it."

a smile flashes.

"i think so but i can't seem to remember either. it's lance."

with a subtle gesture out to the casino, he asks:

"are you here to partake?"

“Hm…” Her head tilted to one side and she shifted on a hip, looking in thought. “Maybe not…”

Before she could say any more, he directed her eyes to the floor below. “Yeah, I was here with some friends, actually, but I have no idea where they went. Figured I’d just… wander around on my own.”

She looked back over, smiling again, and offering a hand. “I’m Annie.”

“I don’t know; it can be. Especially when I run into vaguely familiar, good-looking men.” Her eyes lingered on him, not bashful.

He was handsome. Not all of them were, and nor were they all gentle in the way they took her hand. It was noted, but just as quickly pushed to the back of her mind. Her smile was still fake—though only someone who knew her very well would ever be able to tell.

She let her fingers linger a second longer, and brush along his palm deftly before taking hers away.

“Sure.” Gaze, looking perfectly charmed, finally left him again to look back out to the floor. “You much of a gambler?”

he answers simply. it's half a lie: he gambles every day for almost no reward.

She gave a light laugh, as though she understood what he meant.

Was she? Yes. Nina was a card shark. Actually, that wasn’t so much gambling, was it? Maybe in a different sense…

“Oh, not really. Every once in a blue moon, y’know? Get out with the girls, blow a little bit of cash on the weekend...” She leaned into the rail, black fingernails clicking on it a couple of times as her fingers wrapped around. Her hair fell over her shoulder in a curtain towards the floor below.

“What kind of rewards do you like?”

Her eyes met his again, stacking on the allure and shifting close enough to know the perfume behind her ear could reach his nose.

Lance was playing vague with her, or maybe he just didn’t quite catch her drift. It didn’t slow her down.

“Maybe.” She gave a flash of teeth, and they bit down lightly on her lower lip. “If you make the right plays.”

Noting the direction his eyes went, her smile only curled a bit more towards rouged cheeks.

Ding ding! Winner.

“Okay.”

Her hand left the rail to join his for the second time, a finger brushing again almost too lightly to even know if it was intentional. She’d allow him to lead her to their boozy destination.

it's a short walk before he settles into the stool by the bar. a swift gesture calls for the barkeep as his empty glass clinks against the counter.

Her fingers slid in between his, allowing him to guide them into place too easily. When they arrived, she took the seat next to him, setting a leather clutch in her lap and dropping her phone into it with the other two. It shut again with a magnetic snap.

Dear friend.

She laughed. “Are you sure?” Then, looking to the bartender, ordered: “Two Cosmos, please.”
