A GOOD POISON WORKS WELL AFTER IT'S COMPLETE

SOMETHING’S WRONG. That much is apparent. Whatever ruckus or terror Killian has from the MISTY TERRAIN is unnatural. Fernando had attributed it to something akin to an anxiety attack. After all, avatar powers are still enigmatic and elusive.

A sudden gag of air heavier than one is accustomed to can naturally lead to choking. Especially, if he has asthma.

So, strange but not unreasonable.

It is the calmness that settles in once Fernando toys with his prey that’s unnerving. Unnatural, even. No one turns around from sheer panic to being absolutely calm—no one normal, that is.

“They reign over nature,” he continues, unfazed, although suspicious. “Physical, spiritual, and mentally.”

The Pokemon remains inactive. Dormant, seemingly. But within its eyes, Killian can see the colorful scales of the ocean tides. The way sunlight refracts off the Hoenn coast fills the luxurious color wheel of the Pokemon’s irises.

“Tapu Fini can see the truth of your heart no matter how much you try to hide it.”

There have been moments like this before when Alexandra Briarwood is around. Her presence offered a temporary reprieve from the lingering darkness of his nightmares. But it's just that - interim, brief like the life of Spoink that stopped bouncing. The demon always returned. Taunting, terrorizing, screaming in the back of his mind, a hammer nailing paranoid thoughts.[break][break]

Killian taught himself to ignore it. Stifle the noise behind work, hatred, or a quest for something beyond the stars. Distractions that barely push back the dark. This...whatever this...clarity is trumped them all. [break][break]

So clear, crisp, and sharp in a way he'd never been before. There'd be fear, but a quick search inside finds nothing. [break][break]

Interesting. [break][break]

Another deep breath. [break][break]

With it, Killian finds his eyes pulled to the Tapu by Fernando's words. He stared longing into the deity's eyes. The rainbow tide of the ocean swirled within. Tapu Fini itself was a statue refusing to budge, but true to Fernando's word. Killian swore he felt the creature peering into the depths of his heart. [break][break]

"What truth does it see?" Diamonds peeled themselves away to meet Fern's gaze. "Or are you not privy to that information?" [break][break]

Another deep breath.

“IT SEES WHETHER YOU’RE LYING OR NOT.”

It’s the same shtick he told Katherine Fairburne. And while she had proven shrewd enough to avoid believing him blindly, without the whole picture, it’s near impossible to tell exaggeration from lie.

Now it devolves into a mind game of how well he can sell this. What Killian knows, what he doesn’t—Fernando has to factor all of this in order to exact a meaningful performance.

He makes several gestures with his hands and Tapu Fini float forward. Right up to the table.

“The closer you hold this secret to your heart, the more vicious the punishment for lying.”

Fernando maintains eye contact as his glitter settles on the table.

“Why are you here, Ian?”

Killian straightened and watched Fernando's hands as they moved. His eyes are quick to shift to Tapu Fini. Hovering ominously above the table, the shadow it cast over him preludes his future, one that began today whether Killian liked it or not.[break][break]

"Be more specific." he taunted, "Why am I here in this room, in Hoenn, or on this Earth?" because the answer to all three varied greatly. [break][break]

He took another deep breath while waiting for an answer. Letting the lucidity of the mist grease the gears of his mind.

Fernando quirks an eyebrow at the comment. It’s a look of doubt before enlightenment strikes a chord. Knowledge that is used to gloat instead becomes a secret shared, willingly or not. He notes this for the future, a reluctant frown of approval stringing across his feature.

“We can start with the first."

His frown flatlines and everything settles into a nice calm, waiting for him to trigger the first trap.

Twice now, the devil's graced his tongue and faced no consequences. The assumption here is that Fernando's full of shit. You couldn't blame Killian for thinking so, either. But in a contradiction rivaling Starburst, a mist of all things defogs noise and puts caution back into his bones. [break][break]

TOO VAGUE. Everything Killian’s said so far proves too far reaching for his ‘powers’ to activate. But that doesn’t mean he can’t derive some use from the words spoken.

“I doubt that,” he voices with an ounce of concern. “Everyone is important to someone. It doesn’t necessarily have to be yourself.”

For the first time, Tapu Fini moves, head raising, eyebrow notched as it continues to stare Killian down.

"Do you have someone important to you, Ian? Do you think you're important to them?"

Still, nothing happens. That settled it then. Fernando was full of shit, and this whole thing is a farce. Tapu Fini seeing people's hearts? Ridiculous. Killian should have seen through it from the start. [break][break]

KILLIAN PULLS THE TRIGGER ON HIS OWN DEMISE. The Tapu Fini points its webbed fingers at him accusingly causing the room to tremble. MISTY TERRAIN spreads out in copious forms. They take up the shapes of the deceased, those that Killian knows and those who have passed recently.

Some murmur mere grumbles. Those he knows spits out curses, lamenting their regrets and blaming him accordingly. None of them speak from their own free will, controlled and puppeteered by Tapu Fini. The only agency they have is coming in the first place, attracted to Killian through their history.

“Your heart disagrees.”

They take up the voices in his head. Coincidentally picking up the same words, phrases even, taunting as they crawl closer. He can feel the mist reach out, phasing through him.

They look to punish what Fernando can only assume to be a lie.

The dead rise from the mist but only one impacts Killian in any meaningful way. His mother. Baby blues land on her face, and his clarity weavers. A tinge of pain. Of heartbreak and longing flashes behind his eyes. Replaced quickly by a wave of anger that pinpoints itself onto Tapu Fini and then Fernando. [break][break]

Then the deceased move with the mist. They crawl along Killian's skin and scream insults spoken by the demons of his nightmares. Their words echoed inside the chambers of his mind and threatened to cripple him. [break][break]

"You win." he admitted defeat. "Stop playing games with me, Fernando. Tell me what you really want from me." the urge to look back at his mother vibrates in his neck. He hadn't seen her face in so long. If not for the very mist that spawned her suppressing the bulk of his emotions - Killian would reach out to touch her. [break][break]

"Just get rid of them and I'll talk."
