"i've missed you two!"

cait chortled as her pokemon circled around her and crooned, the pair delighting in accompanying her after roughly several months had passed since she had them in her party last. 

"you've been practicing, haven't you? you look a little stronger, butterfree." 

her reasons for placing them in the care of her family had originally stemmed from the battle of slateport. they had been frail and ill-equipped when compared to the behemoths that had been involved there. and she had very nearly lost them and their moth counterparts during the whole terrible affair. it was a difficult decision to retire them early on - but she felt as though it had been the correct choice. 

'it's still nice to take them out on occasion, though.' 

the pair continued traveling the length of the route, their pace unhurried as they interacted with one another.

"shroo!" 

the sight of the wild grass-type surprised her somewhat, but the young sergeant calmed immediately after. 

"gods, you scared me."

shroomish frowned, having only just emerged from a clump of shrubbery. it had halted before them for a moment, its small eyes shifting from cait to her respective companions. it assessed both beautifly and butterfree for the span of several seconds before moving to distance itself, likely having identified the pair as a potential threat.

"i haven't seen one in a while," she said. "i think my great grandma had two of her own before she passed."

her memories of her late great grandparent were faint and few in number, but she found herself smiling at the ones she could recollect with some modicum of clarity.

'she's in peace now. and so are her companions.' 

cait hummed quietly before continuing onward, paying more attention to her immediate surroundings as she did so.

carnivine - especially the wild variant - proved a far more fierce and undeniably aggressive in its approach. 'carni' was in its name for good reason, after all. 

"butterfree - it's coming for you! dodge!"

the flight-capable pokemon deftly avoided its huge and drooling maw as it lunged and sought to utterly devour her companion. cait  backpedaled and very nearly tripped over her own feet as she did so. her companions distanced themselves as well, but remained close enough to their mistress to defend her from the hostile wild pokemon.

"we'll need to scare it off," cait instructed.

cait gestured for her butterfree to position herself at the forefront. 

"use 'air slash', girl!"  

the bug-type flapped her wings harshly, conjuring sharp blades of wind that thrust themselves toward the grass-type. the damage it suffered was significant enough for it to hesitate briefly prior to its retaliation, the pokemon attempting another crunch that would very likely injure her butterfree to a severe degree. 

"dodge it! and then use super sonic," she commanded. 

that proved just enough to deter the pokemon, the feral pokemon soon enough beating a hasty retreat as it struggled with a bout of induced bewilderment.

the time they had spent together had been pleasant. the excitement had reached its climax during their confrontation with the ravenous grass-type, and had ended abruptly once it had fled. there was little in the way of interruption as they pressed onward, the trio continuing to enjoy one another's company and the lack of interruption.

"it's time to head back home, girls."  

as they began making their way homeward, cait's gaze turned skyward. the sight and sound of the pidgeot having drawn her attention - the beautiful specimen high above her.

'i wonder if it's hunting.'

fortree and its surrounding routes made for superb breeding and hunting grounds for a combination of grass-types, bug-types and flying-types. this served as the primary reason for her family - generations back - settling in an area such as this one. their fondness for two out of three of the aforementioned types having drawn them in.

"i'm craving tea," she said, returning her focus to the path ahead. "with a lot of sugar..."
