"fear. a misplaced one that detracts from their progress."
fernando opens up the laptop and turns it on with a press of a button. it only takes a second to finished booting, a stark contrast to the desktop that isra has to use back in the office. while he's typing in his password and navigating through the various applications that open upon logging in, he takes his time to explain further, having long deemed her technically illiterate.
"instead of having to maintain hardware, you can hire a company that's sole purpose is to provide the infrastructure your organization needs. they maintain it, service it, and you use a remote connection to access their machines. that is the cloud."
a prompt on his laptop opens and fernando scans his eyes using the laptop's innate webcam.
"if there are any issues, your provider will have multiple locations that host the same hardware and have backups of your data. this is called redundancy. additionally, cloud services usually charge you for what you use. rather then having to pay to accommodate your max usage, you can scale what you're using in real time. this is called load balancing. most large organizations use it extensively."
the scan is successful and the screen disappears. spontaneously, a porygon appears on his screen and freely moves across it as fernando pulls up various documents.
"what they're afraid of is that since you can remote into it from an external location, that means that someone else can too. this can be mitigated if you use the proper security protocols but kaeor, the director of information technology, is a permission's prick. real asshole. he doesn't like incorporating anything he can't directly manage and have his hands on."
