The Operation

Mauville City Gym Non-trad Challenge

A large, modular, general-purpose military tent stands exactly where the coordinates pointed.

Inside the tent stands a short, blonde Officer on the far end of a table, her arms folded primly over her skirt, a manila folder in her grasp.

Three light bulbs hang off the spine holding up the tent, their incandescent yellow light working in tandem with the woman's cap to cast a strong shadow over her eyes.

Her gaze quickly shifts up towards the challenger as they part the tent flaps to go inside, and a smile graces her lips.

"Good evening, Ms. Llewellyn. I am First Sergeant Agatha Cromwell, and I'll be briefing you in place of the Gym Leader this evening. Due to urgent business, our Captain was forced to travel back to Mauville shortly before your challenge." She said, before gently bowing. "He deeply apologizes for his absence for this first half of your challenge. He should be back in time to debrief you once the challenged is finished, however."

A unfortunate occurrence. Fortunately, the gym Leader's presence was not strictly required for this half of the exercise.

Her piece said, the blonde officer leaned forward and brought the documents in her grasp to the table, sliding them across with a swipe of her arm.

"All the information you need pertaining the operation is there."

With a gesture of her arm, she brought attention to many items spread over a rack on the side of the tent.

"You may choose a single item from the inventory as loadout." She said, before bringing that same gesturing arm back to the table, her finger pressing over a single, particular map. Two spots were marked; blue, and red.

"You may choose your starting point, as well."

The map also showed Stormy several pieces of data, such as standing guard stations, as well as different buildings of note.

The words spoken, the Officer folded her hands over her skirt once more before bowing politely.

"The Gym Leader left one piece of advice for you: 'Weight your choices as if the dangers and consequences of this Operation were real.'"

A pause followed, before the woman smiled brightly at Stormy.

"With my business concluded... It's wonderful to meet you, Ms. Stormy. I'm a big fan! Best of fortunes on your challenge!"

THE OPERATION

Map of the Installations.

CHOICES

  • You may sneak into the installations through either the red or blue spots marked on the map.

LOADOUT

Choose one (1):
  • Grappling Hook: Upon activation, allows one move to the rooftop of a building lacking any other means of access. [3 turn duration]
  • Smokebomb/Pokedoll: A single use, free get-out-of-jail card for a deadly failed roll. Preparation and a little luck pays off in dividends.
  • Running Shoes: Special Shoes that can temporarily bolster speed when activated. Move action can now cover up to 3 Squares, but the shoes are feeble and tear swiftly. [2 'Move' Actions]
  • Rock: An unlimited use item that allows one to redirect a guard's line of sight for a single round. Can be consumed for an attempt at knocking out an unaware guard or the Bossman. Roll required: 50 minimum.

VICTORY CONDITION

Eliminate the Enemy Leader.

FAILURE CONDITION

  • All pokemon are 'killed' in action.
  • is 'killed' in action.

DETAILS & CONDITIONS

  • You've 10 rounds to locate and eliminate the enemy Leader.
  • You are allowed 3 Pokemon of choice.

SUMMARY

Operative LLEWELLYN, you are tasked with eliminating the terrorist Leader. Intel claims they'll be visiting the facility at a specific time of night. You are advised to prioritize stealth, but how you handle the mission is left to your discretion.

REMEMBER THAT:
  • The terrorist group has set a number of soldiers as watchmen around the perimeter.
  • The skies are constantly monitored, so flight should be kept to extremely short distances, if utilized at all.
  • It’s been confirmed that Growlithe are being implemented as security measures. These are pokemon with an extremely acute sense of smell- but the terrorists’ batch has relatively poor discipline. Handle with care.
  • Terrorist soldiers are armed with assault rifles and have access to radio communication. However, they wear helmets for protection and face coverings intended to protect their identities, both of which limit their visibility and dim their hearing. Keep this in mind, but do not underestimate them or their senses.
  • Remember that pokeballs are a thing. No guard is ever truly alone- and they'll surely employ their pokemon if sufficiently suspicious or alerted.

GAMEPLAY MECHANICS

There’s elements of Choose-your-own-story, as well as an economy of actions.

Missions are timed. The Challenger has 10 posting rounds to accomplish their objective.

The Trainers have an economy of two actions per round. Their commands are:

  • Move [1-2 squares, provided no insurmountable obstacles; All Trainer movement is stealthy, so long as they evade a guard's line-of-sight.]
  • Action Command (Can be anything; using a pokemon move, commanding a pokemon to scout, attacking a guard, etc.)
  • Shoot [2 bullets, target can be up to 4 squares away, provided no cover/obstacles. Difficulty may increase with distance.]

The player can Move twice if desired. They can forego moving at all and make two Action Commands instead as well.

ACTION COMMAND

Every round, the player is free to decide what they'll do and how they'll handle their current circumstances. For every Action Command taken, they must roll a dice.

As the DM, The Gym Leader looks upon their actions, judges the level of risk and reward on a (Low | Mid | High) scale each, and then determines if the result of their roll was enough.

The consequences of a failed roll are context dependent.

A Growlithe failing a roll on an attempted Odor Sleuth may simply not find anything, or even lead their trainer astray, but not immediately pay any consequences other than lost time.

A Growlithe failing a roll to scout an as-of-yet unseen, unexplored part of the map will be taken out.

Your pokemon can only attack someone/something it can see, and only with the means available to it. For example, If it doesn't have incredible speed, or a move of considerable range, then attacking a far away enemy is either impossible or of exceedingly high risk/difficulty.If the player is not entirely certain of whether an action would or wouldn't cost a pokemon, feel free to ask the Leader directly.

Despite its mechanics, the game is fairly free form, and so, if a Challenger is uncertain of whether something is allowed or how a specific action they have in mind would play out, they are encouraged to discuss it directly with the Gym Leader over Discord.

CHOICES

Sometimes, players will be given 2 to 3 choices to make based on their previous actions. These choices are context dependent, and generally offer both something to gain and lose. Choices don’t cost the action economy.

"Oh, sure, yeah! Of course, of course, no problem at all."

She seems distracted, but she quickly refocuses to take a quick, shallow breath and offer the woman a smile.

With a smooth swipe of her hand across the table, she spreads paperwork for her to peruse. It is slightly overwhelming, but she doesn't admit that out loud. Most gym challenges were fairly straight-forward, a testament of strength or capability or merit or whatever. This was.. vastly different. This had expectations, this had an entire fucking manual.

But it's okay.

"Inventory? Fancy."

Her attention catches on the red starting marker, naturally. Her choice is laid out for her easily, instantly, a testament to her impulsiveness. She's impulsive, and hotheaded, and this challenge will be her chance to take control of herself, to make the right decisions, to prove herself, to--

Breathe, stupid.

She exhales, swallows, forces a convincing smile.

Though her eyes snap back to the woman, settling on the details of her uniform, specifically the brim of her hat and the shape of her smile. She's serious, holds herself with intensity and confidence that feels natural where hers feels forced, fake.

"Huh. As if it were real. Got it."

What a Fernando thing to say.

And then she informs her that she is a big fan, and Stormy blinks in surprise. It prompts a genuine smile, this time, along with an awkward, chuckling exhale.

"Oh, thank you, hah, wow! Okay, uhh.. I will start at the red space here on the map. Thank you for your help, ma'am."

On the way out, she plucks the pair of RUNNING SHOES.

The Operation: ROUND 1

Mauville City Gym Non-trad Challenger:

You emerge from within a hole on the wall into a forested area, segmented from the rest of the installations. As far as can be immediately seen, there are no guards nearby.

An stealthy advance is still best.

She breathes in, relishing the smell of the trees and the way the breeze comes in to rustle them. She can hear nothing else but leaves brushing up against one another. So far, no sign of any guards.

However, despite not seeing anything suspicious or concerning, she doesn't let her guard down. Perhaps her apprehension could be a reflection of her trauma. She has always worn her heart on her sleeve, and really, this is no different. This is just more intense, more persistent, more.. all-consuming. She hates how weak she feels. And it was why she had agreed to still go through with this challenge.

She would pesist.

With a quiet exhale, Stormy takes the first few, quiet steps, mindful of where she places her feet. The running shoes she's picked out are.. perfect- like they were moulded to fit her ankles. Though she doesn't use them yet, she is sure that she can count on them.

If there is any opening for to peek around a corner without being seen, she would take it.

The Operation: ROUND 2

Mauville City Gym Non-trad Challenger:

As you advance stealthily and peak around the corner, you see two men standing guard before a lowered gate.

They are not particularly attentive and nor passionate about their job; they chatter lazily while scratching their bums and picking their noses. It's hard to tell if this is how they genuinely are or if they are doing their best at accurately portraying incompetent evil henchmen.

"What's with the two castles anyway? Did the Captain- Er, Bossman feel like bein' fancy?" Asked one while scratching at his chin, brow tilted.

"Huh? Duh, dude. Obviously one of them is a fake." The other side, rolling his eyes.

"Huh... So which one's the fake one?"

"Do I look like some power rangers-ass bad guy? I ain't saying that!"

"But I don't know which one it is!"

"Pay more attention next time bossman is giving out the roles then, jackass!"

They continued to bicker after that.

Perhaps by design, they were not very good at their job. Lucky.

Looking further past them, there seemed to be an incline leading into an elevated section of the forested area. If one squinted, perhaps something akin to the silhouette of a chimney could be found rising above the short pine trees.
