It feels ugly, somehow, to talk of these things in such an idyllic location. Maybe that's why Skyler's eyes drift away from the sunlight to find rest in the shadows it casts. Or maybe it has something to do with the nature of Matias' question following the shift in conversation.

"Still neutral, I'm afraid." The words are smothered to a quiet whisper by the weight they carry. "Until something convinces me otherwise." There were very few reasons that would skewer her loyalties in such a way. angelo vestri. Her parents. Lilycove.

But it was not impossible.

Her way of thinking is selfish and entirely self-serving, in a way, but brutally honest. And if she harbors any doubts? She keeps them close to her chest, away from prying eyes.

Skyler isn't naïve enough to refute his claim. Rocket haven't made a secret of their ambitions for Hoenn, even if spoken in a way that appeals to malcontents and those who live on the fringes. Because isn't that always the way?

Conflict has already touched their shores. Skyler knew it was only a matter of time until it crashed over her hometown.

"We'll see when we get to it, Sarge. If Lilycove's in danger, you can at least count on me to defend it." No matter where said danger stems from.

Leaning back against a nearby rock, Skyler tilts her head to peer at Matias and, although briefly, at the legendary close-by.

"Hypothetically, what would I get from siding with the League?" Given Matias' high profile, the captain assumes he'd be able to have a slight idea.

And therein lies the problem, doesn't it? Because what would she be able to get as League-affiliated entity that would be worth the losses of breaking her neutrality?

Not much, she finds. So why not ask for the nigh-on-impossible?

"Give me Lilycove." Her teeth flash in plain amusement, sharp. She's only half-joking. "Let it be a neutral territory under my jurisdiction."

Behind her, a half-drowned Claydol washes ashore. Distractedly, Skyler throws a pokeball at it.

"No." The possibility that Matias offers her isn't anything that she hasn't heard before. Now, like before, it remains out of her realm of interests. If she'd wanted to join the military, she would've done it already. But he considers her wild suggestion, and for that he's treated to a lopsided grin that gentles her refusal.

"Don't think I would've made a good mayor anyway." It's the understatement of the century. She'd be an absolute disaster at it.

It's all fine and good to boss a crew around, but a city is an entirely different animal. "But I do think that a neutral territory could work to the League's advantage. S'another kind of battlefield."

An opportunity to peer into the workings of your opponent, perhaps.

Beyond the gentle waves that lap at the shore, a Feraligatr is caught in the jaws of an overly playful Wailord. Distracted, Skyler captures it.

Skyler shrugs as if to say 'well, can't blame me for trying' and kicks off of the rock she'd been leaning against. Looking at the ocean, she notices most of her Wailord armada has drifted away along with Matias' Wailmer - and a floating Elgyem?

Scowling, Skyler launches a pokeball at the creepy alien.

"Nothing that I can think of at the moment." Nothing that would be worth burning bridges and ruining possible future endeavors. "I'll keep you posted if anything comes up, Sarge."

Maybe a future venture into displaced ruins would change her mind.

"I'll take good care of Blubber. Give it a month or so."

Approaching the calm waves, Skyler turns briefly to salute Matias. "We gotta meet up for a few drinks. And perhaps an arm wrestling contest."
