he'd been stuck inside the past few weeks, mourning a loss that had clearly shaken him. today would be different. at least, that's what he kept telling himself.

a little TLC in the form of an outdoors walk, greyson kept steady along the path of the route. it's tropical-esque humidity was lower now that summer had ended, and in its place, a gentle cooling breeze.

he smiled for what felt like the first time in a month, even being so bold as to keep it plastered on his face when greeting other passerby's.
[break][break]
his partner for the adventure, a seafoam green swellow, sat gently on his shoulder and admired the sights with him. he gave her a curled finger pet beneath the beak.

"you can fly around a bit, you know."
[break][break]
as if she'd been waiting on his permission, she takes off, banking at shoulder level towards the line of tall brush.

and nearly into face of a young woman.

not quite as young as he might’ve guessed, maybe. the age was there, though still subtle.

a ribombee bobbed along in the airspace over her shoulder, occasionally spotting a bright tropical flower it liked in particular and descending to gather its honey. it was at such a moment that greyson’s swellow nearly collided with her.

heidi gave a startled yelp and flinched a little, but the impact didn’t come, thankfully. her ribombee didn’t seem to notice, still very much occupied with what it was doing.

once she’d looked up, she realized this might’ve not been a wild one.

“hello.” her western kalosian accent was thick. “is this your noibat?” it didn't sound offended; only curious.

the swellow was just as surprised as the stranger, but quick thinking and even quicker reflexes has the bird catching its wings, beating them fiercely once, and then soaring upwards.

have a mind to admonish the flying-type, he instead jogs forward to close the distance.

"swellow, actually."
[break][break]
he corrects, flinching as the words leave his mouth. first he nearly kills the poor woman, next, he's basically mansplaining. he couldn't blame her for the mistake. it'd been coming right for her face, after all.

still, smooth going greyson. real smooth.

"sorry about that, she - and i for that matter - can be a real klutzs. did she nick you anywhere at all?"

“oh.” she looked up at the bird who’d flown higher, now clearly a different species and on the opposite end of the color spectrum. huh. “it is, isn’t it? silly me…” her hair blew in the breeze, maybe a little too blonde.

it was hardly mansplaining if she’d gotten it blatantly wrong. no worries, greyson.

“no, that’s alright.” she smiled at the swellow. “she didn’t actually hit me. no harm done.”

ribombee finally left its flower to hover close to heidi's head again a moment, looking curiously at the apologetic greyson and then booping him on the nose with a tiny hand-like appendage thing; letting him know it was okay.

heidi smiled. “she says ‘don’t worry.’”

he was about to argue when the smallest little hand placed itself on the tip of his nose. eyes-crossed, he looks at the flying little bugger and can't help but... smile.

greyson scrunches his nose, reaching his hand out in her direction. he didn't want to be the first one to pull-away from the pokemon, after all.

heidi smiled, not interfering with the interaction. the bee fly seemed to give something like a small giggle (in its own way) at greyson, before retracting into the space near the professor’s head again.

she reached out and gave his hand a gentle shake.

“heidi. nice to meet you both.”

her eyes shifted to the ribombee there close at her side.

“this is yarrow. she is not a personal space sort of bug, but she’s very friendly.”

as if sensing the conversation had shifted even slighty in her direction, the swellow breaks from the tree tops, swooping back down to land on his shoulder. greyson staggers slightly, but regains his balance, lips and eyes thin as he regards the shiny.

he echoes, committing it to memory.

"nice to meet you both, too."

greyson chuckles shyly, smiling at the small bug hovering over her shoulder.

"it's alright. i think the moment you get your first pokemon, you throw out all regard for 'personal space.' not even locked doors deter them."

he waves at yarrow, putting on something between a 'cute' and 'baby' voice.

"hi yarrow. aren't you just adorable?"

he feels the huff of his swellow on his shoulder, her beak lopsided in jealousy. greyson pays it no mind.

when the seafoam shiny swooped in again, heidi reflexively dipped down an inch or two. once tidbit had landed and settled in, however, she smiled warmly.

yarrow could unlock doors with ease. “you’re right about that,” she agreed.

the ribombee gazed back, rarely if ever having been spoken to in such a way and unsure what to think. heidi tittered lightly, but didn’t mention the bee’s bewilderment.

“oh, nowhere really. just down the route, exploring. this is a very lovely area.”

catching her flinch at tidbit's arrival, greyson winces, trying to shrug off the quick burst of apology that was already forming at the base of his throat. instead, he glances around, drinking in the aforementioned beautiful sights.

"i'm told there's a good spot to view the river, down this way, and was headed there myself. you're welcome to join, if you'd like?"

he could already feel the childhood nostalgia creeping up, as memories of danny and leo came to, their adventures through the wilderness the butt of many jokes, and stories. he suppresses them before they can linger for long.

it was no harm done, really.

when he mentioned the river, the utter genuineness of whatever sparkled in her face contrasted somehow with the carefully crafted brightness that had already been there.

“oh, that sounds wonderful.”

and the smile spread like morning sunlight. it seemed to radiate similarly through her companion. yarrow did an excited loop de loop over her shoulder.

“lead the way, please.”

greyson's lips part in a smile of his own, though it lacks the sheer charisma heidi's did. the genuine expression she wore was a warm blanket over the sour mood from this morning, and he could already feel it lifting in her presence.

turning, he avoids a leaf pile that'd been accumulating beneath a nearby tree, and cuts through a small section of the tall grass. the ground was worn, and trodden, though far less noticeable than the actual trail they'd left.
