Why did it have to involve ghosts?!

Sure, he was able to handle his own reasonably well when the Zoroark swarm came calling through the city a few nights ago, but this—

Okay there should at least be a limit on how much torture one singular human being could take when it came to handling paranormal activities that involved ghosts!

To put it simply: there was shit going down somewhere around the city limits—specifically towards where the wider expanse of fields stretched out.

And boy, the fucking rumors were more than enough to set him on edge!

Did he really have to say a prayer or two before heading out? Well, too fucking late, he was already here!

Originally, Mars didn’t come here because of the rumours, nor did he come here because he particularly cares about the farming industry. He came all the way to Fortree because as fate would have it, as if the very stars themselves had aligned, this is where he had been on the night Azelf had visited him.

The fact that there’s nothing to be found comes as no surprise, and yet, could the rumours of strange things happening at the fields be of any relevance?

That same Duskull from before, yes, the very same one that had been pestering him since the Tournament—was following him around.

Following around with that singular, burning red eye…

Being trailed by Will-o-Wisp flames, even.

He didn’t dare look behind him, because the prickly feeling on the back of his neck was pretty much alerting him to what the hell was going on!

Go away! he screamed in the back of his head as he continued forward—

Deep into the fields of unwavering stalks.

According to the rumours, all the strange events that had been occurring at the fields had taken place at night, something for which Mars is honestly thankful, since the sole idea of coming out here under the heat of a blazing sun sounds dreadful enough.

Going through the risk of potentially getting a farmer’s tan all for the sake of something that doesn’t even have guaranteed results? No thanks! Nighttime is much better, even if he can barely see beyond the couple of metres illuminated by his flashlight...

Except for the wisps of fire in the distance.

Upon noticing them, Mars turns to his Zeraora, watching the way the pokémon’s ears perk up and twitch as if hearing movement.

”Come on, let’s go check it out.”

And so they do, but while Mars may have had little to no expectations, the sight of Fortree’s own gym leader being chased by a Duskull while in a wheelchair is still somewhat… disappointing, honestly.

”Alexei! Need a hand there?”

As he steps out from among tall stalks, the greeting comes with a smirk – almost teasing.

Alas, however, he was stuck in the wheelchair, and therefore had to work around that little handicap—even if he looked perfectly fine on the outside, deep inside he wasn’t exactly alright.

It felt like he was going on a hunt for something really, incredibly—

“M-M-Martin?” he managed to stammer out. The damned, prickly feeling at the back of his neck wasn’t receding at all, either.

“Wh-wh-what brings you out here?” he continued. An attempt to sound normal, never mind if the Duskull began fucking chuckling behind him.

“The…the rumors, perhaps?”

It would make sense if they had, but is Alexei really the best man for the job when he’s out here in a wheelchair and looking positively terrified? As is a little lamb being hunted by a wolf. Who is the wolf here, then? The rumours, the Duskull, or is it Mars, perhaps?

The question comes just as his Zeraora turns, looking towards a group of nearby stalks that begin to shake.

Maybe there was something out here in the fields that was causing other Pokémon to flee the scene—

Asides from the chuckling coming from the thing that was chasing after him, the only other Pokémon he’d encountered were those that were actively fleeing from the scene.

“Pretty much,” he nodded at the initial statement. “Some of the locals haven’t been able to get sleep because of what’s happening…”

He mentally finished the sentence in his head, Like, you know—how people are terrified of the unknown and don’t want to face it themselves so they end up sending someone else…

Anyway.

“Did—did you notice anything else out of the ordinary before you a-arrived here?” he followed up a few moments afterward.

Maybe there were some of those Unown flying around lately—and they hadn’t realized it yet.

Gym leaders have their responsibilities and all, but isn’t this the kind of thing that should be a ranger’s job? Then again, everyone knows the ranger department is notoriously understaffed and underpaid (the latter probably being part of the reason for the former), and Mars wouldn’t even be surprised to hear there’s no Ranger HQ at Fortree City.

“I-I-I hope it’s n-n-not a ghost,” he stammered; never mind if his voice almost cracked as he said that sentence.

Because fuck the supernatural.

It was scary.

It gave him the heebie-jeebies.

Worst of all, Ghost-types in general were more than enough to send him running as far away from where they spawned as possible.

Why did it feel like he was a sheep being chased by some (supernatural) wolves in the middle of the night?! This sucked ass!

“Did you see any Unown around, though,” he mused quietly. “They really did cause a racket down at… down at the party in Mossdeep.”

He wondered if the other was there—but mostly, Alexei himself was with a certain bluenette most of the time.

At the first question, he nodded, maybe a little too quickly for comfort.

Gah, the fact that the cackling behind him started up again meant that the Duskull wanted attention from him, and wanted it now!

With the suggestion of leaving some of his Pokémon behind, he furrowed his brows for a few moments before pondering if it was feasible in the long run.

“A good idea, however… they stand out too much,” he mused. For one thing, his Braviary had blue plumage instead of red, a definite ‘alarm’ when it came to trying to sneak around undetected. Plus, his Salamence was, well, a Salamence after all! A draconid, big and scary.

“How about you, do you have anyone who could blend in, keep an eye out on whatever happens out here, like—like the one behind me?”

When in ~~Rome~~ Alto Mare…
