It’s a beautiful farm.

An acreage of land that was clearly well-cared for once; not the type that exists solely for monetary gain and that exploits both its pokémon and land. A nice place, a home, and yet these are probably exactly the reasons why it will soon be foreclosed.

Maintaining a farm has one too many expenses, and if nothing is gained from production, then it all becomes money down the drain eventually.

As Mars looks around the property, it becomes obvious to him that that’s what happened here, and it almost makes him regret being interested in it when looking through his weekly reports and emails.

Except that maybe, just maybe, there is something different to be gained from it...

”What do you wanna do first?”

Looking down at his small companion, he smirks, for in this place where so much grows, perhaps a child with a very difficult upbringing could at least enjoy a few good moments... Even if she's only here because he ran into her on his way out of the Rocket submarine.

His question is countered by one of her own, a quiet hum slipping from her lips as she skips over to the fence. Curiosity draws a Flaaffy over in all its fleecey glory, its tail swishing with every step it takes. And the sight evokes a bitter sense of longing, her hand reaching out just to pat the ovine.

"I've only ever visited one once, but they said I was a little too young to be around the bigger pokemon... maybe we can go milk the Miltanks or uhm... shear the Mareep?"

The closest thing Mars had to a farm when growing up were the lands where his family bred, raised, and trained horse pokémon for their beloved races. Gorgeous Rapidash of blazing manes, graceful Zebstrika that left sparks behind when running as fast as their hooves would carry them…

It’s precious memories that come to mind when hearing Eris’ question, the faint smile that tugs at his lips existing more than just because of her mention of that one precious word that still eats at him every time he hears it.

”Mmm… Something like that? Never really done much farm work, though.” He chuckles at this, because it’s simple the truth: aside from plenty of experience with brushing horse pokémon and his recent trip to pick apricorns, Mars isn’t really one to care for that sort of work. It’s not meant for people like him, after all.

Perhaps it’s because of this that, as he watches her interact with the Wool Pokémon, his own answer as to what they should do becomes obvious:

After all, this is supposed to be a fun little field trip, and while they both may be trained with blades, the potential for a Mareep getting nicks and cuts would take away from that.

When she moves to follow, she listens close to the crunching of leaves beneath her feet, giggling whenever Reiner jumps on small piles along the path and competing to see who makes the louder crunch.

"Oh right, Mars!" Pausing abrupt in her leap, Eris nearly loses her balance and just about manages to stick her landing with a flail of her arms. In doing so, she's able to naturally continue into her train of thoughts, lifting her bracelet up and beckoning for him to look. "What do you see in this?"

She's pretty sure of the answer she'll receive, but she supposes there's no harm in checking anyways. Her brain's been too scattered over the past few days for her to fully comprehend what's going on and she just hopes to try her luck at things that may or may not be.

Truth be told, if Mars is completely honest with himself, he knows that the reason why he invited Eris Halla to join him on this field trip to the farm is because there’s too much about her situation that reminds him of his own upbringing. Of how he too found himself belonging to the type of organization no child should belong to, of how things like crime and death were all too normalized, and of how he was robbed from having the innocent childhood any kid deserves…

It’s thinking that Eris deserves to grow up with moments as sweet and meaningless as the way she giggles when her Luxray jumps on a pile of leaves, because Team Rocket shouldn’t take precious things like those away from her.

”Oh? A super information broker?” The words get his attention, and it’s only then when he too stops on his tracks, turning away from the barn where Miltank await in order to look at the small girl. He leans in for the sake of being closer to eye-level with the raised bracelet, and his gaze falls on the now all too familiar charm.

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

NOTHING HAPPENS. When Eris raises the bracelet for Mars to see he gets a full gleam. It appears to be a plain charm, unmarked, fitting in the palm of his gaze. Their memories of their previous encounters remain suppressed.

What Eris sees is the same letter she’s always seen. Unfortunately, she’s unable to convey as much no matter what means she takes. A circumstance of evasion…

Collaboration and teamwork have always helped when it comes to dealing with puzzles and strange phenomenon, so why does her mind whisper such a thought?

Even if she pulls away and turns towards the Miltank, she's definitely listening close for his answer. Something about this seems odd, as if she's missing bits and pieces of her memory... but the thought is thrown aside when Reiner bumps his head against her, buckets clanging softly as he holds them by the handles with his tail.

"I see it at times and maybe I'm going crazy, you know? Maybe there's nothing there and I'm just imagining stuff... that sounds like me!" Laughing, she takes a bucket of her own and offers the other to Mars. "Cmon! Bet I can collect more milk than you can!"

The charm is familiar because it’s the same charm Eris wears all the time, and even though there’s a strange feeling of deja vu he can’t quite shake, it’s her words that distract him once again. While still leaning down, Mars meets the child’s gaze, reaching to ruffle her hair. ”Remember what I told you about being cautious? If you’re going to be meeting strangers, at least make sure to always have your pokémon with you in case of anything, okay? Bringing an adult you trust is also a good idea… Having people you can rely on is always better than being alone, no?”

There’s other reasons for his words, of course, starting by the fact that the thought of a twelve year old hanging out with random people and a shady information broker should be concerning, but Mars is not here to make children paranoid of the world.

She pulls away, continuing to walk towards the Miltank, and as she does, he straightens his back, watching her for a couple of seconds before following along. For some reason, thoughts of her mention of seeing an Unown letter on her charm linger in his mind.

Actually, he knows the reason: Unown have been of too much relevance as of late, and Mars doesn’t believe in coincidences.

”An Unown letter, huh? I didn’t really see anything, no… Which letter is it?”

Could it be that it’s something only Eris can see?

The thought causes him to frown just so slightly as he approaches a Miltank, reaching for a stool to sit next to it. ”Do you want to go first, or should I?”

Her answer comes so naturally, but her mind whispers that something is missing. For her... why had she asked Mars to take a look anyways? Something familiar... For a moment, she stares blankly at Reiner and it takes him a solid nudge to get her moving again.

"You can try first! Unless you've never done it before!" Her attention grips onto the last words spoken, her gaze hovering over the stool before flicking back to Mars. "Imagine working this whoooole farm by yourself... and you might stand in the sun for long hours too! All the sunburns and tan lines you'd get... Farmers are really cool, huh?"

”Pryde? Like the Head Scientist?” With how fond Eris seems to be of science and research and all things of the sort, it would be no surprise to find out that she had encountered Raphael Pryde before. It would also be no surprise to find out that the Head Scientist has in fact tased her, because some Team Rocket members just aren’t as tolerant with the antics of children as others. ”Why did he do that?”

Considering this, he looks down at her, only to then gently poke her stomach. ”Have a firm stance when you punch or your opponent will knock you off your feet with one hit.” Some honest advice that comes in the company of a smirk. Advice a child like her shouldn’t need, but that he knows she might have a use for one day given the life she lives. It shouldn’t be this way, she shouldn’t be walking around getting tased and throwing punches.

Thoughts of Eris’ life turn to thoughts of her charm, and absentmindedly, he reaches for one of the buckets in order to begin milking the Miltank. ”Yeah? Would you like to live in a place like this, Eris? A big farm where you could play all day?” The question is asked with a smile, but as milk hits the bucket, a much different question fills his mind:

He seems to know what he's talking about!

The mist settles quickly within her mind, dragging her back into her pool of thoughts and flushing everything else out. This time, it takes more than a little nudge to pull her back, his teeth gently sinking into her palm as he gnaws at her fingers. She jolts, looking around her as if trying to pieces together where she's currently at before offering Mars a sheepish smile.

As he works on milking the Miltank, Mars tries to imagine what Eris’ life must have been like before Team Rocket, before the war in Kanto. Probably a lot like what his own life was like back when he lived in Ambrette Town, before his family discovered that that’s where his father had been hiding him – a peaceful life, a quiet life, a happy life.

Different setting, yet still the same. The sort of life Team Rocket could never really give them.

”That sounds really nice! I bet you had a lot of fun, huh?”

His gaze falls upon the tag on the Miltank’s ear, her name apparently being ‘Lorelei’. These farmers clearly cared a lot for their farm and the pokémon living there, and it almost makes Mars think it’s a shame that they’re losing it because of monetary problems. Almost. If only they had been smarter...

It’s Eris’ silence that makes him look at her again, and lost in thought as she seems to be, Mars can’t help but frown slightly at the sight. Is this something that that charm is doing to her? Is it the result of all those awful things that have been happening as of late?

When she smiles at him, he returns the gesture with a warm smile of his own, and instead of saying anything about it, a hand gently rests atop of her head, petting her.

”Wanna try milking the Miltank too? It’s pretty easy, just be gentle.”
