ALEXANDER STONE had been.. distant in some ways ever since she had asked him to join her for a date. The timing had been all wrong, she hadn't really meant for it to be on Valentine's Day.. that's just how it happened.[break][break]

Stormy had probably misread the situation between them, overstepped their boundaries. They were friends, why should she think that he might be interested in anything more?[break][break]

The only way to calm herself was to pretend that this was just a 'hangout', two friends going out doing goofy shit and having fun - no strings attached.[break][break]

never half-ass anything; that is the mentality in which alexander stone was raised with and that is the mentality he still carries. so when agreeing to a date, he'll treat it as a date regardless of what his partner's expectations. with miss silph, he knows of her expectations rather well.

nothing but the fanciest for her because that is what she deserves. black suit and tie, he compliments the dark in her outfit well which he will soon realize as she steps out of the door of her apartment.

"good evening, stormy. you look beautiful."

She's just closed the door to her appartment, ensuring it's locked up when Alexander's voice sounds off behind her.[break][break]

When she turns around, her jaw drops a little bit. There's a fierce flash of red across her cheeks and she shifts the crutch underneath her arm. [break][break]

It's just occurred to her that he didn't refer to her as 'Miss Silph'. Stormy readjusts the strap of her purse, unsure how to respond.[break][break]

He steps to the side to allow her to move in beside him. She takes a couple steps forward, smiling.[break][break]

her compliment is not needed but it is appreciated, nonetheless. he nods his gratitude and compliments it with a smile. the crutch does not go unnoticed. it complicates things but it cannot be avoided. he knows of the mission he participated in and while he wants to comment on it, he chooses not to because that is not what the night is about.

"don't worry, i've made reservations at a restaurant not too far away."

they start making their way down the elevator, out the front door, and into the car with a driver at the ready. time skip ahead finds both of them sat at a table of a gorgeous restaurant owned by an elderly couple. its decorations give it a nostalgic feeling of home.

as the two finish making their orders, alexander asks the first question at the table.

"i have to ask: how's the leg treating you?"

Stormy blinks in surprise. She was the one who had asked him, but he had taken charge and planned out their night anyway. This made her both flattered and a little nervous.[break][break]

She follows him to the elevator, stands in awkward silence as they go down to the ground floor, and walks slowly but confidently after him before climbing into the waiting car. She felt her cheeks heat up, though. It was embarrassing for her to be relying on a crutch, it ruined her outfit and made her look weak.[break][break]

At the restaurant, she scans through the menu and eventually decides on something easy. Stormy looks up slowly when Alex addresses her leg. It was like the elephant in the room.[break][break]

"It's healing, just slowly. But I can't complain - it could have been a lot worse. It... it was a warning, that I'm too reckless. I could have lost my leg, or my life."[break][break]

Fernando was right, after all. She dove into high-risk endeavors with no regard for what might happen. The Sandslash marring her leg was lucky, he could have taken it right off.[break][break]

a glaring truth eats away at him, and while he will not say it, he cannot stop himself from thinking it: stormy silph should have died on that rescue mission. his heart sinks for a moment at such a thought. no matter how much he would like to deny it, he knows it to be true.

"but you're here now. you're safe." stormy might have made a mistake but mistakes open up opportunities for her to learn and to grow. it's how she'll better herself. he can only hope she realizes as much; judging from her words, she must have.

smiling, he meets her eyes. "and i'm glad."

raising his glass, he offers a toast.

Stormy could feel her voice shaking a bit as she admitted to her own faults, admitting that she had been reckless and stupid. [break][break]

Now though, as Alex says what she wants to hear, even if it's not what he wanted to say, she breathes a sigh. Her hand wraps around the bottom of her glass, tapping her fingers idly against the base. [break][break]

When he raises his glass to toast, she does too. There's a weak smile on her face as if she isn't totally convinced, or perhaps she's just embarrassed at him being glad she's okay. Maybe she's a little confused that he is, seeing as Fernando had not been as thrilled.[break][break]

the ends of their glasses clatter against each other, producing a gentle clink! before being raised. he takes a sip of the wine, smiling, though that smile fades ever so slightly at the implications of her statement.

"and why do you say that?"

but alexander knows why. relations within the silph family has been complicated for years. even currently, he knows of how stormy is aiming for a gym leader position but is being stopped by the councilman.

"you should not care too much about what fernando thinks. his work ethic is exemplary but that does not equate to him being a good person. i still do not know if he is."

he takes another sip, biding his time.

"there are people who care about you, stormy. your fellow league officers, your other brother, me."

She, too, takes a small sip of wine. Her eyes catch the falter in Alex's smile and she immediately regrets saying anything. Tonight is not for dwelling on the negative. [break][break]

Her voice cuts short, an internal struggle apparent. Stormy sets down her glass, looking into it to try and distract herself. She idly swirls the contents as Alex informs her that she shouldn't dwell on Fernando.[break][break]

While her partner takes another sip, she interjects.[break][break]

"I shouldn't have said anything. That was inappropriate of me."[break][break]

It's the truth, though. Fernando's influence is great and has dampened her spirits on a number of occasions. [break][break]

"But I fear that Fernando's influence on the League could be detrimental to my reputation. He's made it abundantly clear I'm no longer a part of the Silph family."[break][break]

She runs her fingers up the stem of her glass, bringing to her lips to try and drown the emotion rising in her throat.[break][break]

"I'm sorry. This isn't an appropriate conversation for such a lovely evening. I'm afraid I'm not very good at this."[break][break]

Just as she says this, their waiter approaches their table with food. The overwhelming smell causes her stomach to rumble in anticipation.[break][break]

her words, no matter how they seem to dampen the mood, ring true because fernando has had an influence over her desire to become a gym leader. it's not present on the surface, as these matters should not be, but alexander knows of the intricacies that run deep within the league and its ranks.

still, her apology lightens the mood a bit. he breaks the tenseness with a soft chuckle.

"don't apologize. i'm not very good at this either, as you can tell."

truth be told, alexander does not go on dates that often. between devon and rustboro, he barely has time for anything else.

the waiter approaches the table with their food for the night. he smiles, inhaling the delicate scent as he reaches for his utensils.

"sorry to hear about fernando, but--" he picks up his knife and fork. "you are always welcome in mine."

another smile forms.

"and i'll see what i can do about the lavaridge gym position."

For some reason, Alex admitting that he is also not good at dates surprises her. She isn't sure what she expected, but perhaps she had assumed that a handsome man such as himself spent at least some time around women.[break][break]

She doesn't voice these thoughts, however. Instead, Stormy reaches for her own utensils and evaluates her meal, deciding on what she would like to dig into first. [break][break]

Stormy looks up in surprise at Alex's next statement. She isn't sure how to interpret his words. Her cheeks flush with colour and she laughs nervously, focusing on cutting up her food into portions instead of the charming smile Alex continues to bless her with.[break][break]

"Thank you, ah. That's very kind."[break][break]

More attention goes into her meal as she carefully and quietly eats. She's very solemn about it, focused on the task of not making a fool of herself. She's always been scolded for being inappropriate and improper while eating.[break][break]

At the mention of the Lavaridge gym position, she seems to jump, quickly tucking a piece of stray hair behind her ear to try and interject.[break][break]

"Oh, umm. You really don't have to, Alex. The council is right, I'm not ready. I--"[break][break]

Stormy coughs, a piece of food caught in her throat from her surprise.[break][break]

"I have some personal... obstacles I need to deal with."[break][break]

bit by bit he picks away at his meal, jabbing it with his fork and knife before taking small, eloquent bites because he still wants to remain attentive. her reaction isn't predicted but he cannot say he's unprepared for it. he takes a moment to process her words before speaking.

"think of obstacles as part of the learning experience of being a leader. no one's perfect right from the start," he says.

the council has to act unanimously but when one member has more sway than the rest, is it truly unanimous? he ponders on the thought.

"try again when you're ready, stormy. but in my opinion, you're ready right now."

smiling, he takes another bite of his meal. he chews for a bit and waits a moment before asking another question.

"i am curious, though," he shifts in his seat, "why lavaridge?"

No one is perfect right from the start. [break][break]

His words echo in her ears as both a warning and an encouragement. For whatever reason, Alexander Stone has faith in her abilities. [break][break]

Stormy allows her thumb to trace the pattern on her fork for a moment, considering what he's saying carefully. She had been unsure about her decision to lead a city, discouraged by her own weaknesses. [break][break]

But Alex's encouragement and strong words made her even more unsure. Perhaps she was meant to become a gym leader.[break][break]

She hesitates before stabbing into her meal again. She brings it to her lips when Alex asks her why Lavaridge.[break][break]

For a moment she chews, but she's also parsing the question. It had been sort of a no-brainer for her, but perhaps she needed a better response than 'I like fire.'[break][break]

She swallows, setting down her fork and knife. Another pause indicates more time to think.[break][break]

"Lavaridge feels right to me. It's nothing like Kanto, but I feel like I belong there. I'm not sure I can properly explain it, but I really believe it's in my best interest to help that city specifically."[break][break]

a question appears of whether his judgement is being clouded by other factors. to be objective has never been a problem for alexander, but with stormy, doubt starts to fill his mind. is he genuinely being objective? for once, he does not know.

"good answer."

a genuine, too. he can tell. though not usually logical, gut feelings can be relied on at times. with the existence of ghost-pokemon and ethereal beings, the concept of fate or the universe do not seem so far-fetched. perhaps it is fate that draws stormy to lavaridge.

"i am sure the people of lavaridge would be happy to have you as their leader."

his meal's finished as he sets his utensils down to the side. as the waiter starts clearing the table to set up for their last course, dessert, he's granted ample time to move the conversation along.

"i suppose this is a good request to ask on a date," he chuckles softly, "tell me something about you that i don't know."

It comes as a surprise to her that Alex is satisfied with her answer, maybe even impressed with it.[break][break]

Her fingers falter on her fork as she reaches to pick it up, it clinks against her plate painfully loud and she clears her throat awkwardly.[break][break]

"You think so? I-I mean, thank you."[break][break]

Some people have looked up from their own meals and conversations to see what the disruptive noise had been. She keeps her head down to avoid drawing attention to herself.[break][break]

Not long after he finishes his meal, Stormy does as well. She folds her napkin over her lap and gingerly wipes off any crumbs or sauce from the corners of her lips. [break][break]

She smiles politely at the waiter as he collects their plates, assuring them that dessert would arrive shortly.[break][break]

Stormy's attention returns to her date, mostly because he's reiterated that it is, in fact, a date.[break][break]

"Something about me that you don't know? That's a hard question, you've known my most of my life I think. Although.. I don't really know that much about you I suppose."[break][break]

There's a pause to consider the question. She hadn't really thought about her past or her own hidden traits. She was mostly an open book, easily read from start to finish.[break][break]

"I really don't know anything about my heritage. My mother's maiden name was Llewelyn, but I have no grasp on where it comes from. But.. that's not really what you asked."[break][break]

She furrows her brows, thinking hard on the question. [break][break]

"Hmm.. well. Remember when we were really little, and you told me that you thought puzzles and board games were awesome and that they were your favourite? And I told you that I also thought they were awesome? [break][break]

I lied to impress you. I'm not good at puzzles and board games, they're mind-boggling and confusing and I just get too impatient."[break][break]

She laughs, a little embarrassed to admit she had lied to him all those years ago.[break][break]

"I really wasn't letting you win, I just sucked that bad that I lost every time."[break][break]
