It wasn't uncommon for birds to make nests. In fact, you could even say it was literally the thing they were born to do. While there were worse places to nest than a tree, the Toucannon and her squawking babies were a little too close to Rustboro for comfort. Not only could an angry, protective momma (who's beak could easy heat up to over hundred degrees celsius) cause issue for the locals, but it was safer for the birds to be a little more out of the way.[break][break]

This did, however, leave Pace and Lia with a slight issue to deal with - how the hell were they going to relocate this thing without succumbing to medical shock related to full-body burns?[break][break]

"...I bet I could climb up there"[break][break]

It's a hell of an idea, right? If he went slow enough to not cause her to immediately freak out, maybe it would be distracting enough that Lia could do something without suffering the Toucannon's wrath. And also, maybe he'd keep his footing safely enough to not tumble back down to earth with the weight of a ground-type.[break][break]

In fact, Pace being the Avatar of the legendary pokémon guardian of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, he didn't even wait for an answer before approaching the tree. It was sturdy enough to hold his weight, and he was already a couple feet up before he knew it.[break][break]

Lia could have rolled her eyes, because by the time these words left her, it was already too late and he was already climbing up the tree. If he had asked what they should do, Lia would have said they could have her Breelom spread its SPORES to put the Toucannon mother to sleep and safely relocate her and her eggs, which would have probably been much easier. But alas, apparently this was the way they were doing things…

The spores thing really would have been a much better idea, but Pace was already halfway up the tree and "wait" wasn't a word usually in his vocabulary. As far as trees went, it was honestly pretty easy to climb - Pace knew this, of course, due to being that one kid who was constantly breaking his wrist or shattering his kneecaps falling out of shit as a kid. When he was forty he'd probably regret it, but as for now, he was too stupid to consider the ramifications of slamming his body into the floor over and over.[break][break]

In honesty, any other idea would have been smarter. Release a rabid pack of Rattata to scare it away? Use one of those Unown that had been showing up everywhere to do something psychic-y? All seemed much safer compared to a big old dude getting within touching distance of that hot, spicy bird.[break][break]

"Careful's my middle name, Lia"[break][break]

As he called down, he slipped his foot onto a small half-grown branch which snapped under the pressure of his boot, causing him to slip. A sudden lurch in his stomach, but he was quick enough to have grabbed something stronger and hoist himself back up. He laughed, then - so damn reckless indeed.[break][break]

"Close one, huh?! Fucking hell-"[break][break]

He laughs again, and leans back a little to keep an eye on the Toucannon above, eyeing him with a little bit of frustration and a lot of confusion.[break][break]

...What was he actually gonna do when he got up there? Hm. He hadn't planned that far.

As was made obvious by the fact that he slipped and almost fell the moment he said those words, as if the tree had suddenly decided to deliver karmic justice upon him for saying such obvious and blatant falsehoods. It was nerve wracking for Lia, but Pace? Pace just laughed, and that only made things even more frustrating for his fellow ranger.

She sighed, trying to remain calm. Trying to push her frustrations and worries aside. Trying to tell herself that things would be fine. Why couldn’t he be more careful? Why couldn’t he put at least a little thought to the things he did? If this was some silly attempt at impressing her, it sure wasn’t working.

”At least try not to get blasted or something, yeah? She’s watching you.”

Calling up to him, her gaze went from the Toucannon to Pace in case she needed to intervene in any way.

He heard her say his name, but climbed on. For someone who cared so much about other people, Pace really didn't give a shit about people sometimes. It was his fatal flaw - his total inability to understand other people's feelings sometimes. He spoke without thinking, acted without making sure he wasn't going to endanger himself, slept around without being sure he wouldn't upset the other party when he inevitably dropped them.[break][break]

Just a few more pushes and pulls, just a little bit higher. It was slower, less exciting than being up high on Braviary-back, up where the gusting wind and clouds could obscure everything as thick as mud on a window. Yet still that was where he was most comfortable. Sure enough, he could see her close and clear - the Toucannon that eyed him so warily, squeaking Pikipek snuggled up beneath her soft stomach.[break][break]

The problem with wild pokémon was that they acted unpredictably.[break][break]

"Shit--!"[break][break]

It was just a show of wing size and a warning call - nothing actually dangerous - but it was enough to make Pace back up. Backing up was fast and done on instinct, but instinct didn't usually think about things like which branches were the most sturdy, and Pace fell through as quickly as he placed his weight down.[break][break]

There was nothing to grab onto besides rough branches that he could feel scratching his palms as he failed to get a solid grip, clusters of leaves slapping him in the face as he fell down.[break][break]

All he could think as he dropped was that, if he had to break his leg in this fall, that Lia didn't have to see the bloody bits in too much detail.

A bird pokémon showing off its wing size to scare off a potential predator was no rarity, and it was what Lia would have expected when dealing with something like a Toucannon. It should have been what Pace expected as well, especially since he had almost as many bird pokémon as her, but alas, it seemed like the action surprised him…

Thankfully, she had a pokéball ready in fear that something like this might happen, and just as he slipped and cursed in surprised, Lia clicked on the button at the centre of the sphere, calling out a large Ursaring that swiftly caught the Unovan in its fluffy and strong arms, huffing as it looked down at him.

”Thanks, Rin.” It was with a sigh that she gave the large bear’s arm a few pats, her attention then turning towards her fellow ranger. She raised a brow.

So focused on the one possibility, Pace forgot that birds did other things sometimes and was thrown off by an embarrassingly obvious reaction. He didn't fall too far, but he did fall fast, into the soft and strong arms of Lia's Ursaring. As though it had never even happened at all, Pace begins to laugh, letting himself relax into the bear pokémon's furry paws.[break][break]

"Okay? I'm fine! Just pissed her off a little, no worries"[break][break]

Always so obnoxiously, painfully chill.[break][break]

"Thanks, bud" He gets to his feet and gives Rin a pat pat on the arm, then puts his hands on his hips and looks back up at the ruffled Toucannon. Since climbing right up there didn't work... he actually had time to think and process before running in with his brain turned onto moron mode.[break][break]

"...Seems like it'd be best to deal with mama from a distance, huh?" It's so obvious it makes him grin down at the ranger beside him. "You have any grass-types on you?"[break][break]

If only she were a smaller bird, something much more easy to deal with, then they'd be sorted. A Chatot; a Delibird, even a Swellow. Instead, they had to try and not get exploded by the ten billion degrees-hot beak of a large, pissed-off new mother.

Lia could have hit him. In fact, she probably would have hit him if she didn’t like him so damn much; if they weren’t friends, if he didn’t always hit on her, if he weren’t so damn handsome, cute, and nice. She still gave him a deadpan stare, though, and she still reached up for his cheeks once he was up on his feet – squishing them in a manner that was far from gentle or sweet.

She scoffed, rolling her eyes, but the Ursaring was called back to its pokéball indeed, and in its place a Breelom was released.

”Can you use your spores to put that grumpy Toucannon to sleep?”
[break][break]
An easy enough task for the Mushroom Pokémon to handle, and sure enough, all it took was a few SPORES for the bird to end up in a deep slumber.

He beamed back at his pale-haired partner as much as he could when his cheeks were being squished Skwovet-style. So beautiful, so sweet, and so dangerous! The three things he loved most about his dear Lia, obviously.[break][break]

On top of that, so clever, as she releases her trusty Breloom and promptly sets up for angry mama bird to become a much more chilled, much sleepier bird. As the Toucannon rests its weary, spore-y head, Pace puts his hands on his hips and looks up.[break][break]

"Hell yeah! Good thinking, team" He pats Lia on the back in one of those annoying ways that men did.[break][break]

"Guess all that's left is to get her somewhere else, huh? I can head up there and-" He trails off as he meets Lia's eyes, as if pre-empting the telling-off he'd get if he tried to climb back up there and then, somehow, climb back down with the Pikipek in tow.[break][break]

"...Or I can get on Seti and fly up! Much safer, right?" Pace taps the side of his head like he's just said the smartest thing in the world, before taking out his Braviary's pokéball and calling him out in one swift motion. All they needed to do now was get mama and her Pikipeks to somewhere where they wouldn't be an issue to trainers or other curious wild pokémon.[break][break]

Easiest mission ever? Hell yeah! And Pace didn't even snap his back in half like a twig! Sounds like a win, if you ask him.
