grimster (m) prankster - power-up punch, false surrender, spirit break, flatter, hammer arm, torment

dressed as his own character in a very popular mmo that he's played for years, he strolls through the rein-faire, gazing around like a young kid at all the sights in awe and wonder. it's not his first ren-faire, but the excitement never dies out.

he's so engrossed by it all that he just walks right into someone. naturally, he reaches his arms out to try and catch them.

This is one of the few occasions in her life where Luka actually feels underdressed. Though her outfit sports a bit of medieval flare it's nothing like the elaborate cosplays adorning those around her. Somewhere in the back of her closet is a costume she had worn once upon a time, but she finds that time of her life a little embarrassing now.[break][break]

But the festival is still charming, and the excitement all around her is enchanting. She's staring at a few axe-throwers when someone bumps into her, and is only saved from tumbling to the ground by strong arms and quick thinking.[break][break]

"Oh no, I'm sorry! I wasn't paying attention, I— "[break][break]

Her eyes lock onto a familiar head of dark hair and eyes that look so much brighter when not behind a screen.[break][break]

"...luka?"

after all the time they've spent together in the digital space, he'd recognize her anywhere. seeing her in person instead of through a screen just feels...surreal.

it's why he pulls her into a hug, warm and longing as he chuckles. when he pulls away, he's beaming with a smile.

"i never thought i'd see you here! or ever, really...but what are you doing here?"

"Danny?" she repeats, disbelief etched into the corners of her mouth. It hangs open, even when he pulls her into a hug. She looks like a trout.[break][break]

"I can't believe it! I— " Luka finally returns the embrace, the gesture just as soft and warm as she is. How many times had she wished to hold him like this back then? Her past self would be furious that these were the circumstances of their first true meeting.[break][break]

"I moved here a few months ago," she explains when they part. "I just...gosh, wow! It, um, i-it's really good to see you," she gushes, giving Danny a quick once-over. "You look well! Are you doing...I mean, um! I hope you've been doing well, too?"

luka looks like a fish. a cute one, at least.

warmth spreads when she returns the embrace. how he'd long to hold her like this in the past, to feel her in his arms. despite the things that have happened, this moment still feels sweet, not bitter in the slightest.

"no way! i moved back a few months ago as well. what are the odds?"

he gives her a quick once-over as well.

"i'm good! just chilling. still unemployed..." he chuckles, lying, "...how about you? did you get a job here?"

the danny she'd remember through her computer screen looks similar, sure, but a lot has changed since then, too. he's more muscled, chiseled, but also there's a look to his face that conveys a sense of sadness.

The lines of his face are sharper now, more man than boy. And there's a slight weariness to him that she can only pick out because she used to know him well. But Luka isn't talking to Danny Hall— she's speaking to the ghost of who he used to be.[break][break]

Comparatively, the years don't show much on her face, still concealed by mochi soft cheeks and a bubbly exterior. Perhaps she just hasn't been through as much, or perhaps she's simply better at keeping it buried. Either way, she seems barely changed.[break][break]

"Oh wow! Ehe, that really is funny! Who would've thought...but erm...yeah! I did, actually. I mean, I didn't move out here for it, but something managed to fall in my lap." It'd be vain to ask if he'd seen her in some of the POG bank advertisements she's done, so she refrains. "Same old, you know? PR stuff. Are you, um..."[break][break]

It's only now that she really steps back and notices his costume. "Are you still gaming, then?"

pr stuff. despite having a degree in marketing, his imposter syndrome tells him he could never do what luka does. that stuff's in the past anyways. not like he'll ever have a normal job again.

he looks down at his costume, nodding.

"yeah! i'm pretty busy but i game whenever i can."

gone are the sleepless nights of gaming with Greyson Connors. he swallows the thought, shifts it elsewhere.

"you wanna grab something to eat? maybe catch up a bit?"

he pauses, hesitating for a moment.

"i've just really missed you, luka."

It's a simple sentiment, and earnest. There's no need to go into detail. No need to talk about all the times she had thought about reaching out with a call or a text, or the one time she did only to find his number had changed. The game account that she can't bring herself to delete, frozen in time like a mausoleum for their old relationship. There are so many ghosts on the internet.[break][break]

"Let's go get that bite, okay? I'd like to catch up too! I'm sure we'll have a lot to talk about. Gosh, this is so exciting!" Luka bounces on the balls of her feet, beaming. "You can pick the place, okay? I don't really know what's around here."

it should become clear just how often danny comes to festivals like these, but also this one in particular. he turns in a direction, gesturing as the paper pauldron on his shoulder wiggles.

and the reason he hasn't moved yet is because he's not sure whether to reach for her hand or not. he glances down at it, then back up at her.

Luka catches the glance, subtle as it is. She could take his hand, and it would probably be innocent, but that doesn’t make it appropriate. The distance between them is a clear indication of how much time has passed.[break][break]

A smile, slightly sad, weaves its way onto her face and settles like a shroud. [break][break]

“I’m um…well. I’m dating someone, actually.” The revelation comes with a shy blush and the aversion of eyes. Her hands, still empty, fiddle with the hem of her skirt. “Gosh! Um, wow. I guess I have a lot to fill you in on, huh?”

Luka catches his expression, and with it comes a twist of guilt. There’s a facet of her heart that will always belong to him; she carves out pieces and leaves them with everyone she’s ever loved. [break][break]

But rather than address it, she smiles blithely and prays that the same happiness she’s found will bless Danny as well. [break][break]

“He’s, um…” To say he’s a prince sounds like bragging. “His name is Remiel Calcifet,” she says instead, and lets Danny fill in the blanks. “And um, gosh! We haven’t been together for very long, but it’s been lovely-”[break][break]

She gushes a little more than appropriate, perhaps. But the conversation carries them all the way to the restaurant, and Luka practically skips as she walks.[break][break]

“What about you?” she asks when she finally pauses for breath and remembers that it takes two to carry a conversation. “You’ve gotten so handsome! I bet people are lining up to date you.”

guilt shouldn't even be a factor, really, as there is nothing to feel guilty for. the two of them tried it once but it didn't work out. end of story. so he should be happy that luka's found someone else.

everyone should move on, shouldn't they?

"oh! the price! he was all the rage when i was in galar. still is, i bet."

he smiles back, returning the same energy as they make their way to the restaurant.

"i haven't seen the line yet but i do hope one's forming." he jokes, chuckling. "it's been quiet for me. i've only dated once after we broke up, and that ended terribly."
