At least within the small studio in the upper district of Slateport City, that is, because while everyone else in Hoenn may still be in a Halloween mood on this chilly early November day, POG Productions prepares to shoot Piazza Oro Grande Bank’s ads for the holidays.
[break][break]
With an elegant Christmas tree, garlards, wreaths, prop presents, fake snow, and much more, stepping near the set is like skipping forward in time straight to December 25th. Meowths wearing red and gold bows around their necks run and play, a single one of them sitting on a small director-like chair bearing her name: Cash Money.

The star of the show, of course, her pink-tipped ears, paws, and tail perfectly matching the pink hair of today’s model.

”Are we good to go? How are you feeling, Luka?”
[break][break]
POG Bank’s own CEO is present too, because he sure as hell didn’t go through all the trouble of buying his own small production company to have their advertisements meet his standards to then not show up when they’re actually being shot.

Mars may not care much for Christmas, but in such a scene, even he’s in a good mood.

"Umm...good, I think! I feel good."[break][break]

It's never too early to get into the spirit. Luka knows that many of her peers would be annoyed to see fairy lights and glimmering garlands before the season has truly started, but the holiday spirit has a strong hold on her as she steps into the photoshoot's faux winter wonderland.[break][break]

For a moment she just gapes at the scenery, idly adjusting the santa hat perched jauntily on her head. "Wow," she whistles softly, "You really went all out, huh?"[break][break]

She matches the scenery perfectly of course. Soft fur lines the cuffs and collar of her cherry-red costume, and a bell tinkles at her throat. The ears poking out from her hat are the same that adorn the star of their shoot, and Luka waves over at Cash Money before she traipses over to her...friend? Boss?[break][break]

"Are you sure you don't want one yourself, Monsieur Del Mar?" she asks with a quirk of the lips. Nearby lie a few extra hats— she picks one up and plops it on his head with a grin. "It suits you!"

luka chêne is as if the living embodiment of everything holiday spirit should be: beautiful, gentle, sweet, and exuding an air of kindness and innocence that most would never even be able to mimic. It’s what makes her perfect for the sort of commercial they’re shooting today, and this becomes even more obvious when she appears clad in the costume that has been prepared for her.

”Très magnifique, Mademoiselle Chêne.” Mars praises when seeing her, and at her question, he can’t help but laugh, leaning down just so slightly in order for her to place the santa hat atop of his head. Being that it’s one of the ones meant to be used for the commercial, it too has cat ears akin to those of a Meowth, and meeting her gaze, he tilts his head, a slight smirk tugging at his lips then. ”You think so? I guess we match now.”

Later on they could probably take some cute selfies together, but for now, what matters is the hours of hard work that await them.

”They gave you instructions as to what you should do, right? I think everything is ready. You’ll do great!”

While Mars is here to supervise and make sure everything goes smoothly and just as he wants it, directing and other tasks of the like are left for those he hired to fulfill such roles. It’s also why they shouldn’t waste any more time: because it’s his money that goes down the drain if they do as much.

And yet, here he is, talking to Luka. Perhaps because other than supervising, he’s also here to give a good friend the encouragement if it's ever needed.

Luka blossoms under her friend's compliments, like a rose. Though she's always known Mars to be the coquettish sort, she's flattered nonetheless. It's hard not to feel self-conscious in a situation like this, so every little boost to her pitiful self-esteem is much appreciated.[break][break]

She giggles again and spins in place to really show off her ensemble, the fluffy ruffles of her skirt swirling around her thighs. "Mhm! I'm, erm, a little nervous, but I guess it's not much different from showing up for a contest, right? And since you're here, I feel a lot better." She chatters on, voice pitched slightly higher with nervous energy. It doesn't really occur to her that they're wasting time until the director of the shoot shows up, coughing politely to alert them of her presence.[break][break]

Right. They're here to work, not just socialize! "Um...I'll see you in a bit, then," Luka says, waving sheepishly as she's ushered away. "You'll be here the whole time, right?"[break][break]

It puts her more at ease, knowing Mars will be nearby. He's become a comforting presence for her— someone reliable and strong, a rock. ~~Until he shoves her aside during the church raid, but we're not talking about that rn.~~ She's joined soon enough by a legion of Meowth, and sleigh bells sound in the studio as all their jingling collars chime at once.[break][break]

Modeling is a lot harder than it looks. It's more than simply simpering for a camera and taking a few quick pictures. Luka's tired by the time they reach their first break, and makes a beeline for the craft table. Not wanting to muss up her costume, she just grabs a bottle of water and finds a spot to sit down.[break][break]

Her Meowth pads towards her and immediately curls up in her lap— Luka doesn't protest, even though she knows she'll have to lint roll the fur off her dress before shooting starts again.

The words are as honest as the smile they come with, and yet perhaps they’re meant in a sense much deeper than what even Mars himself realises. Unbeknownst to Luka, he had tried to abandon her once; to leave her behind in order to save himself from the horrors that lurked beneath the church ruins in Ever Grande. A lot has changed since then. Mars has been reminded how much it hurts when someone you care is selfish and leaves you behind, and given the aneurysm and the constant warnings from his doctors regarding his health, perhaps the banker has found himself in a position to reconsider how he treats certain people in his life…

His friend. The people who matter. People like luka chêne
[break][break]
He should have never tried to leave her behind.
[break][break]
So, this time, even if perhaps it means so little now, he stays. It doesn’t make up for what happened back then, but he’s here to reassure her – watching the photoshoot and smiling at her whenever she meets his gaze. The photoshoot may matter to him, but that isn’t the only reason, as proven by the fact that when the break comes, he approaches Luka instead of going straight to the director:

”Look at you! A model through and through.” He grins, ever so confident and cheerful. Cash Money soon approaches as well, meowing and pawing at his leg for him to pick her up – always a diva. ”You sure you don’t wanna eat anything? It’s been a while.”

Honestly, hats off to professional models, because it sounds like a terribly annoying job.

"Oh gosh, you think so?" Embarrassed laughter flutters past her lips, but Luka still looks pleased with the praise. She lifts her chin a little higher, posturing before her friend. Cherry red lips purse into an exaggerated fishy pout, and she winks before dissolving into giggles once again.[break][break]

"This is it, right?" she gets out between bouts of happy laughter, wiggling her fish lips again. "Very cute? Very sexy?" Her Meowth meows and bats at her face, and she finally settles back into a normal expression.[break][break]

She's tired, sure, but this is nice. Hanging out with her dear friend, even if it's for work, is simple. It makes sense. The events of the past month have been a lot, and she still has nightmares about it. So Luka savors happier moments like this, where she doesn't have to dwell on anything unpleasant.[break][break]

"Umm...well. I could probably stand to eat, but I was told, erm..." She casts a look over at the set's costume designer, who's frowning over at the pair with a lint roller in hand. "No eating in costume. But it's fine! I'll be okay, promise."[break][break]

She smiles her usual smile and idly pets Nutmeg's head. "Besides...this is kind of fun! Though I don't know why you don't just do the ads yourself," she admits. "I'm sure you're very photogenic!"

She winks and pouts and giggles, and through it all, Mars watches her, an amused smile creeping upon his own lips before joining her in her laughter with his own chuckle.

”Oh, definitely both cute and sexy.”

He sounds honest and that’s because he is, for Mars would never shy away from telling someone how good looking he thinks they are – especially if it’s someone he cares for like he does about Luka. Beautiful people deserve to know how beautiful they are, or at least that’s what his mentality is about things like these.

Then again, Mars does have a capacity to find beauty in most things.
[break][break]
The fact that she’s not supposed to eat in costume, though? Not so beautiful, but still understandable.
[break][break]
He sighs, finally picking Cash Money up and holding her in his arms. ”Alright, but if that’s the case then let’s at least grab a bite later. My treat.” Since studio snacks definitely don’t make for a good meal.

And it’s at her next question that he laughs, the sound soon fading into a smirk.
[break][break]
”You’re right, I am, and I have done some modelling in the past. I appear in some of the ads but I’m too busy to be in them all. Plus, variety is important.” All valid points that are completely true, and yet, being here and looking at both the set and his friend, the banker finds himself shrugging just so slightly. ”...This one looks rather fun, though.”

It’s a friendly banter that flits between them, but that doesn’t stop Luka’s cheeks from pinkening or her gaze to turn abashed. But fluster gives way to more laughter, a happy smile. An onslaught of compliments raises self esteem up on tippy-toes; maybe, for once, she almost believes him.[break][break]

She’s pretty in a fragile sort of way, like a rose. A Pristine; white with a trace of pink along the outside, And when you pick it, all the petals fall off.[break][break]

And like a flower, her smile blooms when Mars extends his invitation. [break][break]

“Really? Waah, thank you! You’re an angel!”[break][break]

Craft services have nothing on a nice dinner on Mars’ dime. And though she might normally protest or offer to split the bill, Luka has long since learned to accept her friend’s generosity. As evidenced by the elaborate shoot going on around them, he can more than afford it.[break][break]

“It’ll be nice to take a break. You’re working hard too! I guess it’s a good thing you don’t do the shoots too...I'm worried you'll burn out if you stretch yourself too thin!" The slightest pout is replaced by another grin. "But you do look good in the hat!”[break][break]

She reaches up to bat the pom-pom at the end of Mars’ santa hat, just like any one of his Meowth might. The bell tied around it jingles in tune with her chiming laughter. A few of the cats look on enviously, and Nutmeg meows.[break][break]

“Take a few with me then. Pleaseeee? Even if it’s just for fun! You can put it on the bank’s social, a behind the scenes kind of thing…” Eager hands wind around his arm and tug him forwards. “We’ll be cute together! And then it’s right back to work, promise.”

If she were to have a look at his schedule, she’d probably worry even more, and being fully aware of this fact, Mars finds it to be a rather amusing thought. His life has been this way since before he even moved to Hoenn: always busy. It’s a choice, one he made of his own accord, because being busy means there’s less time for wandering thoughts. Being busy means grief must be pushed aside for the sake of work.

”Why thank you, though I’d argue I always look good.” Mars winks in response to her compliment, smiling at the way she causes the pompom’s bell to chime when lightly hitting it. There’s no shame, no sense of embarrassment, and no real modesty. It’s said as a joke, words chosen carefully, yet anyone who knows Mars would know well that he has no lack of self-esteem. Quite the contrary.

Perhaps that’s why his response to Luka’s offer should probably come as no surprise.

Selfies together for the bank’s socials? Pictures of himself that also serve as advertisements? When would he ever say no to that. Mars has always loved taking pictures, and he especially loves those where he has his friends by his side.

”Alright, fine.” He acts as if she had forced his hand, laughing, but of course she hadn’t. ”The shoot is almost over, let’s take some selfies and then you can get changed so we can go get dinner. There’s this nice restaurant that just opened nearby and I’ve been meaning to give it a try. Sounds like a plan?”

"Okay, yay! That sounds perfect. See, this is why I adore you!"[break][break]

But it's not his money or the opportunities he provides, not really. Mars is just her friend above all else. Though perhaps his confidence is part of the reason Luka enjoys spending time with him. She doesn't find his self-assuredness annoying— in fact, it's anything but. She admires it and, secretly, envies it a little.[break][break]

It's sad how someone so good and kind can still hate themselves. Insecurities spider-step their way up her back, whisper cruel things into her ears. At least Luka does her best not to show it, shrouding herself in rose petals so the thorns underneath are overlooked.[break][break]

Being around Mars is both fun and self indulgent. When they're together she can play-act the part of a confident woman, try his self-esteem on like a child playing with her mother's high heels. She has a feeling he wouldn't begrudge her such, but it's still not something she could ever actually bring up.[break][break]

Regardless, they pair of them get together to take their selfies. And they look adorable, of course! Luka even does her best to convince Mars to strike the stereotypical nya~ pose, paws and all. Those pics are getting saved right to her phone, thank you very much![break][break]

And then, all on schedule, they go to dinner. Luka's exhausted after a day of shooting, but she's not going to give up precious time with a friend just because she's a little sleepy! After all, Mars is on a schedule. And Luka, determined to stay relevant to such a busy man, is going to shove herself into whatever time slots he has available.
