just a few minutes of walk away from league's main building and kyle's already within the halls of one of the league's newest gyms.

he had just dropped off paperwork from responsibilities forced onto him by the upper management, most of them miscellaneous and was just pushed onto him for ditching previous work. a trip to one of the furthest cities from the mainland of hoenn needs to be worth the while as he doubles down with a challenge to get a new badge for his collection.

kyle finds himself staring at the painting that was supposed to mark the start of his challenge. it wasn't that he was disturbed by it, but moreso perplexed with how different this experience was compared to everything else. then again, what gym challenge wasn't a mystery gift.

"nice to meet you under better circumstances," he jests, breaking the ice and noting his last meeting with xander during a search-and-rescue mission. "i just step in here, right?"

he points at the painting with his thumb. he's not exactly sure how it works, but he's not going to question the mechanics of the game in case it breaks immersion.

Of course, he'd be unlucky enough to have the strongest trainer in Hoenn as his first challenger. The pessimistic thought gnawed at him ravenously. Even as they walked to the selected painting, Xander struggled to keep himself from frowning. It's when they stopped before the mural, and he met the fierce gaze of the Lucario depicted in the art that Xander remembers. [break][break]

Those dark thoughts are the old him. A version of himself best left buried beneath the stone foundation of the gym he's earned. [break][break]

kyle lopez's presence is a good thing.[break][break]

"Yeah, things were pretty tense last time." Professor Creighton's rescue is partly why the League gave him the gym. "Glad I made an impression." [break][break]

Xander nodded and stepped up to the mural. "That's right, let me just -" he pressed down on the golden nameplate that hung below, a satisfying click sounding. A few seconds later, the grinding of gears echoed, and the wall pushed open like a door on hinges, revealing a stairwell that led down. [break][break]

"After you."[break][break]

Once Kyle made his way down several flights of stairs, he'd arrive at his destination. [break][break]

A war-torn and barren badland scorched by dragon's fire and clouded in smoke. In the manufacture sky above, a Charizard and Hydregion circled. Below them kneeled the Last Lucario with his Bone Club. Cosmetic scars and gashes adorned his body to help sell the scene. [break][break]

Over a loudspeaker, a voice meant to be Lucario boomed. [break][break]

"Friend or foe? Dragon or Knight?"

he descends down the staircase, surprising him with a scene that fails to make it seem like they were still within the gym. the tone of the setting hits kyle as soon as he sees it as a satisfied smile comes to his expression.

he gives the choice he makes from the dilemma given to him.

"i like experiencing a last stand of sorts. let's go with that."

going against the lucario when it has dragons aiming for it as well seemed to be the easy choice on paper, but blatantly one-sided options such as this usually had its twists. going for the opposite made sense if he went by trends, alongside the added benefit of taking the more moral choice.

a manectric comes out of its ball. it stares up alongside its trainer as they both eye what they're going against. sparks start to accumulate on the electric-type's fur while its tongue wets its lips as it gets hyped up by the prospect of a fight.

"i hope this is just a regular 'beat 'em up' kinda deal." he turns to xander in this case for confirmation. "right?"

Lucario stood from the ground, his body slow to raise. At the sight of movement, his draconic assailants descended from the clouds. [break][break]

Charizard was the first to land. The ground quaked at his impact. His clawed feet scraped dirt as he turned his head skyward and roared, scorching air with a stream of fire. His Hyreigon comrade contained to circle the skies above. Each of her heads turned down at the battlefield, watchful. [break][break]

"Just a fight with a theme."[break][break]

A battle with a story to tell whose ending had yet to be written.

simple and clean. kyle likes that, but he's committed to trying out every other gym's non-traditional challenges.

"let's do this then, lord lucario."

fingers interlock as he stretches his arms up for a warm up. he takes a moment to assess the situation and the setting of the fight. considering the matchup, it was clear what needs to be done first.

arms collapse to his sides and kyle holds up an arm in front of him. his hands form the shape of a gun as he points his index finger straight at the charizard.

"charge beam."

the manectric fires the first shot of the fight: a straight, precise beam towards the flying reptile in the air.

The beam's collision with Charizard's torso sent electricity sparking down his scales in a mad dance. Tongue vibrating behind gritted fangs, he pushed the taste of copper down his throat and roared. Lifting from the ground with a beat of his wing, Charizard spewed a mighty Flamethrower at Manectric. [break][break]

Lucario shut his eyes and let the flow of aura guide him. His aura clubs turned into a sphere between his palms. Locked onto Hydreigon's life force, he shot an AURA SPHERE at one of its heads, provoking its ire and drawing it to the ground.[break][break]

The dragon carpet-bombed the battlefield with twin DRAGON PULSES. One for Lucario and the other for Manectric.

getting the attention of the charizard towards the manectric instead of the lucario was great, all things considered. kyle takes his time to build things up to a great conclusion, and they were still just building up for the rising action of the story.

"charge."

the hero taking a beating so he gets to be the underdog of the story was a staple on the myriad of anime he had watched. besides, wasting energy to dodge something difficult to maneuver away from was inefficient anyways.

leftover static from the earlier charge beam helps the manectric battery his next electric-type moves, with the current one building up on that to take the benefits from it and get more from it multiplicatively.

the glow on the pokemon's fur was akin to a light bulb as large sparks coat the pokemon's fur, raising its special defense alongside building up charge. the coat of electricity diminishes the damage done from both moves, but it was damage nonetheless.

"get ready for the next one, bud," he tells the lucario, casually speaking with it as he does with his own. they work off emotions anyways, so being optimistic helps, maybe.

Lucario nodded at Kyle. To his eyes, the champion's confidence swam as yellow wisps of aura around him. Brilliant and inspiring, the sight pumped vigor into Lucario's veins. Aura surged from his pores in response, gathering it around his fists; Lucario molded and transformed the energy into ice. [break][break]

When the Charizard charged forward to attack, Ryu prepared to counter, but the lizard flew into the air at the last second. The ground beneath Charizard was bathed in a Flamethower as it took to the skies. [break][break]

Hydreigon remained aloft in the sky. Nasty Plots for the next attack brewed inside her head.

since the attention was now away from them and at the charizard, kyle decides to just drop everything for one big attack. he whistles for his manectric's attention, and then shifts his sights at the charizard when the electric-type gives it, giving it a target without verbally announcing it.

the next move goes unsaid, but both parties know of it.

dark clouds start to form overhead the manectric. with the residual energy from the earlier charge beam and the electricity stored from charging previously, the manectric prepares its thunder as a huge bolt of electricity drops from the sky, which is just a ceiling filled with clouds from the manectric.

the attack comes crashing down to the charizard that had been attacking the lucario.

kyle covers his ears as he steps back, a slight smile appearing from the amusement of managing a huge electric-type attack indoors. he's never tried it before, even during his elite four days, since it was risky for his own room's maintenance. at least this wasn't his.

Manectric's electric fury struck true. The lightning bolt landed between the distracted Charizard's wings. The dragon bellowed, his body falling from the heavens, a spasming comet. [break][break]

Lucario, acting quickly, Copycat'd the Thunder. Another bolt struck the plummeting Charizard. A second later, the dragon crashed into the ground. Dust clouded the air, and Lucario waited for Charizard to rise, but he didn't. [break][break]

They fell one dragon. [break][break]

A Dark Pulse shot from the sky down at Manectric. Tiamat's power alone is more than enough to crush the opposition.[break][break]

CHARIZARD HAS BEN DEFEATED!

any move that the pokemon deems too strong was given a pass to act accordingly to protect themselves against it, regardless of whether kyle barked an order or not. exemptions were made if the trainer says otherwise, but this wasn't the case today.

the pokemon erupts a barrier in a pinch to protect itself from the attack when it sees the opposing hydreigon's move charge up and travel towards him. dark pulse washes over the manectric, residual dark energy burning through the ground as a testament to its power, leaving a bubble untouched.

manectric's shield cracks under the pressure, though it manages to hold until the move ends. kyle's mouth, leaving agape, closes when he realizes that he doesn't need to say something.

"we're only getting a hit or two before it probably disintegrates us," he tells the lucario, the calm tone being unfitting to the words of choice. "pop off."

Hydreigon roared furiously from the clouds above. Protect? What an annoying tactic. She'd have to deal with Manectric first. [break][break]

The aura guardian glanced at Kyle, not fully aware of what pop off meant but able to piece it together. It was time to get aggressive. Lucario nodded and stood straight. Tiamat fired another Dark Pulse at Manectric the moment he did. [break][break]

The sinister beam split the heavens in half, red lightning crackling along its length. Lucario threw himself in the laser's path. Arms outstretched, aura surged before him, conjuring a shimmering rectangle of light. Protect clashed with Dark Pulse once more only to shatter like glass.[break][break]

Lucario heaved a sigh.[break][break]

They'd stand little chance if the dragon remained in the sky. They needed to bring it down, and he had a plan. Lucario pointed at Manectric, himself, and then Hydreigon before crouching and hoping. If he could boost off the electric hound, he'd gain enough air to reach the beast.

kyle wasn't sure of what was happening, but a bark from the manectric indicates communication.

he's not sure whether it's from hanging out with too many lucario and riolu that the manectric can take a general gist of what it was implying from simple gestures alone, or if there's some kind of low frequency canine language that the two used, but the manectric's acting on something.

as the trainer decides to let things play out, the manectric charges up, stimulating its muscles with electricity. it pounces higher than it could've normally done, letting a bark out for the lucario.

kyle opens his mouth for a command just in case, but he holds on out of sheer curiosity of how two pokemon that haven't socialized ever before can pull off tricks on the go without assistance.
