The holiday season is not one Mars cares much for, and truth be told, these days the thought of it comes with more painful memories than good ones. Memories he can’t really escape, either. For, it seems as if the holiday spirit and the decorations that come in the company of it have overtaken even the steel walls of Team Rocket’s ever cold submarine.

Should he resign himself to his fate, then?
[break][break]
No. Mars has never been the type, and especially not now that he has a prophecy from a literal god constantly reminding him that he should defy his fate. So, maybe he can take advantage of the situation, then. Since, even if he may not care for the holidays anymore, there was a time when he did; a time when he wished he could have as much fun as others did when celebrating them.

It’s what he would want if he were a kid.

It’s what he wants for those kids who are stuck in this place when they should be carefree and enjoying their holidays.

”Eris! You won’t believe this… Someone stole the box of ornaments I had for the small Christmas tree in my office, and all the presents I had bought earlier. Want to help me find them?”

Despite the way he smiles, his words are serious, because the ornaments and expensive presents he bought are missing indeed. As for who stole them, though... Well…

[attr="class","inner-finally"]The holidays are a time of year where she feels the most awkward. After all, it's been so long since she's actually had the chance to celebrate it with anyone. Just like her birthday that she'd had not too long ago, she waddles through the North Wings under the watchful eye of a Rocket grunt, idly playing with Reiner's mane as he leads the way forwards. Why are they here? Uh... something, something... she's bored?

There'll probably be something fun to do if she wanders for long enough!

And her theory holds true, her attention snapping to an approaching Martín del Mar as a glimmer of excitement flashes through her gaze.

"Stolen... there's a sneaky thief? Like uhm... a reverse Santa? So we gotta stop them before they steal the holidays, right?" Taking the gifts instead of giving them... that was a reverse Santa, wasn't it? Even if Mars disagrees with her ideas, she'll hold onto them for later. Imagine being able to scare Santa's socks off when he sneaks down the chimney! He'll fall right into their Flamethrower trap!

Her thoughts stop there and she fall silent, tapping her fingers against her bottom lip as she stares hard at the ground.

Given that they’re in Team Rocket’s submarine, of all places, the statement is nothing short of amusing, for haven’t most of them done their fair share of thievery?

Still, Eris has the right idea, and if only for a second, Mars smirks just so faintly at how quickly she catches on and goes along with things. ”Exactly! Who knows, we might even find the lost presents and ornaments while we’re at it.”
[break][break]
Which, really, is the most important part of all of this. In fact, if Eris looks closely around the room they find themselves in, she might even notice the glimmer of giftwrap from behind a chair – a small perfectly-wrapped present resting poorly hidden where it might just be missed.

See, Mars has always been extremely picky about presents, going to great lengths to get people things he knows they might like. For example, he once even bothered with going through all the trouble of finding a Chia pet of someone’s favourite Christmas movie character for them, no matter how much he may have dislike it himself:

Patting Reiner's mane, Eris leans in close to whisper secret plans in his ears - Mainly that they'll have to be extra in sync today to avoid being jumped by the Crimmus Thief! She'll be his eyes and he'll be her ears. Together, they share an unbreakable bond that will withstand today's test. Of course, Eris isn't quite Eris if she doesn't get distracted by something shiny in the corner of her vision.

Darting over to the chair, she's grabbing at the package, lifting it high over her head as Reiner bounds over to nudge her and sneak a peek at just what might be hiding within.

"What kinda gifts do you even get people?" She wonders, trying ever so hard to resist the urge to start shaking the box lest the contents shatter. "I've... never had to think about giving things to others..."

Or well, never had the chance to. The only ever Christmas she ever remembers celebrating had been filled with an exhausting day on snowy mountains, with her tumbling into snowbanks and being laughed at by Reiner. The last she'd heard, Chia pets seemed to be a cute but also rather questionable choice of gift... After all, imagine growing a whole wig for the figure only to cut and harvest it later...

As should only be expected, the hidden gift is soon found and Eris raises over her head as if victorious while her Luxray approaches with curiosity – never one to leave her side. It’s a cute sight, and Mars can’t help but smile as he watches the pair.

”What kind of gifts? Hmm… Well, when I buy things for people I usually think about what I know about them, and from there I try to figure out what they would like.”

The method isn’t as simple as that, obviously, and things like those don’t work all the time, but there’s no need to bother with telling Eris all the intricacies of how much effort he puts into picking presents for people he likes. After all, even if Mars may not be all that fond of Christmas, gift-giving is a tradition that will always matter to him.

”Do you have anyone you’d want to get presents for, Eris? We could go gift shopping sometime.” It’s a passing offer made as he approaches the girl, lightly ruffling her hair in an affectionate way before reaching for a pokéball from which a Delibird is released. ”Sigillaria here can carry that for you, there’s many more to find.”

The Delibird greets Eris with a playful salute, opening the end of its sack-like tail as if to take the gift.

"Uhm... anyone... Pa! And Pip... Hideo, Doug, Locke... Remy? Serena and Gavin!" The more she lists names, the less fingers she has to count them all. "Reiner gets one too. Mercury, Mitts... All my pokemon should get something too..."

But that's a lot of gifts, isn't it? She scratches the back of her neck in thought and purses her lips as she places the gift into the Delibird's tail. With a gentle nudge from Reiner, Eris is guided along, her hands clasping around his neck as he carefully pulls her onto his back. And he'll continue on his way in this fashion, his snout pressed to the ground as if trying to pick up some kind of fancy fruitcake scent that Mars emanates.

There’s something ever so heartwarming about listening to Eris list all the people she’d like to get presents for. All of them being people who have had a positive effect in her life in one way or the other – people who she cares for. It’s not a short list, and truth be told, that’s a great thing given where they are and the kind of life she leads.

”Woah, that’s a lot of people, Eris! And a lot of pokémon!” There is a chuckle to accompany his words, but noticing her worry and hesitation, Mars does no more than give her a few pats for comfort as they walk. ”Don’t worry about it. You know, if you’re not sure what to get for most of them, you could always do something nice like bake them some holiday treats or even draw something for them. I bet they would all love that a lot.”

Why wouldn’t they?

As they wander through the North Wing, they soon make it to a spacious room (or as spacious as rooms can get in a submarine) where a few ornaments and gifts lay carefully hidden. Standing at the door frame, Mars smiles brightly when he turns to look down at the girl.

”How about this… Find all those ornaments for me and help me decorate the little tree in my office, and we’ll call that my gift.”

What could a man who can buy just about everything he may desire want for Christmas?

Perhaps the sort of thing money could never get for him.

Precious moments to cherish, as simple as they may seem.

After all, how long has it been since Eris last decorated a tree? How long has it been since the last time he did things like these?

Though, she does keep her grip light - almost as if she's hesitant - giving him enough opportunity to pull away if he ever felt uncomfortable. "Or maybe you're more of a cake person?"

Of course, when he pushes his office door open and offers her an alternative, she's more than happy to oblige. Perhaps, she seems a little too excited for someone simply thinking of how to decorate a tree. The last time she'd ever done so was...

Her smile dulls a little, but she's quick to shrug the thought off as she pats the Luxray.

"You hear that, Reiner? We gotta sniff them out! Or at least, you gotta... I don't got as strong a nose as you do!"
[break][break]
To which he responds with gruff laughter, his tail flicking as he carefully helps her off his back. And she's skipping as soon as her feet touches the ground, tottering over to the tree as she places a hand flat on her head and compares it to the tree.

"Look, Mars! We're the same height!"

Mars hadn’t really expected Eris to reach for him and take his hand, but once she does, he finds that there’s something heartwarming about the feeling, and he gives an extremely gentle squeeze in return. The small and delicate hand of a child. Once, years ago, he had dreamt of what it would be like to hold his son’s hand like this one day. The tragedies of life meant that never got to happen, and yet here he is now, holding Eris’ hand instead – who, really, by this point and after everything that has happened, is more and more like a little sister.

”Hmm… Let me think… I like cake, but I think gingerbread cookies are best during the holidays – especially when they’re decorated.”
[break][break]
It’s the sort of thing people do during the holidays, right? Bake gingerbread cookies and decorate them? Mars has never been one to care much for cooking and baking, but there’s something about that that sounds fun… perhaps because it too is something he never got to do as a child.

The thought lingers in his mind on the way to his office, and he chuckles lightly at Eris’ short conversation with her Luxray. The ornaments really shouldn’t be all that hard to find, but difficulty isn’t the point of all this – it’s not supposed to be a challenge.

It’s supposed to be fun.
[break][break]
”Ha! Look at that, you really are! Guess it’ll be easy for you to decorate it, then.”
[break][break]
It’s one of the reasons why he had chosen a smaller tree. That and the fact that anything bigger would probably end up being an annoyance and get in the way of things. This one, however, with the way it stands at one of the corners of his office, is perfect, and it would be even more perfect once decorated.

”Better get to finding those ornaments, Eris.”

"Right! I'm super on it! Extra attention and all!" Saluting the man, Eris hops a little towards Reiner and sneaks a peek over his shoulder. "Did you find anything cool?"

He snorts in response, reaching into a small nook and dragging something out with his teeth: A small bag of ornaments ranging from snowflakes and mistletoes to tiny sleighbells. Still, the bag seems a little too empty and the number of decorations far too little to be considered a full set... So she cheerily hugs Reiner for his efforts - To which he happily snuggles up to her - taking hold of the pouch and starting to search near the bookshelves.

Of course, it's hard for her to focus on finding things when her eyes keep wandering over the title of the books. Economics: The Regional Conflict... The Stonks... Macbeth?

"What, you egg!" She grins, waving around an imaginary knife. Then, she hops over to face her imaginary self, holding her chest as she dramatically reaches for the skies. "He has kill'd me, mother!"

While Eris walks around the room in search of the ornaments, Mars simply watches as he leans against the frame of a door that remains open. Out here, at the offices of Team Rocket’s high command, everyone is usually as busy as it gets, and yet here is Admin del Mar: leading a little girl through a treasure hunt so they can decorate a Christmas tree together.

To be fair, their doctors did tell them both to avoid stress, and he’s already done with his duties for the day.

Of course the Luxray gets praise, and maybe he’ll even get a few treats later out of the ones that are usually reserved for Mars’ Meowth and Persian. It would have happened now, but honestly, the admin is all too distracted by the sight of Eris dramatically quoting Macbeth.

Inevitably, a short laugh escapes him.

”I didn’t know you were into that sort of book. Yeah, I do have a couple of mythology ones here. We can look at them later, if you want.”

From the corner of his eye, he spots another hidden present, this one being right beneath his desk next to a couple of loose ornaments.

"Pa was. He used to quote funny lines all the time!" Be it rain or fall, he'd always have some ready to dramaticise before her very eyes. If only he were still around to share a moment like that with her again. Her lips grow thin as she bites on them, turning her gaze away as she scurries to busy herself.

"Do you have more other than Sinnoh myths?" There's almost a crack in her voice, but she does her best at covering it up with ambient noise, her jacket clasps clattering against the ground as she kneels down. "If you're not busy, we can share more stories that we've heard!"

Her attention flits over the neatly-wrapped box hidden amongst a bunch of ornaments, curiosity beckoning her to pick it up and (against better judgement) give it a light shake.

"Is this one of the missing presents you were talking about?" She hums, holding it out for the Delibird to take. "Looks more like you misplaced it!"

The way the sentence is spoken in past tense makes it clear that Eris is not speaking of Chu-e Choi, but of the father she once lost, and this in itself causes Mars to frown just so slightly, for the words bringing thoughts of his own father and inevitably also of the day when he lost him forever.

He’s thankful Eris keeps herself busy, for her question too distracts him from that dreadful chain of thoughts that threatened to tightly wrap itself around his mind. ”Oh, yeah, for sure! Eris knows nothing of the time and effort he's put into his secretive planning, and perhaps it's better that she remains oblivious to it. That rare bit of joy she has in being a great seeker surges forth and she's readily taking more found ornaments from Reiner when he hands them over to her.

"Yeah! We gotta decorate it real pretty!" She smiles, untangling the little loops of fairy lights as she begins to skip around the tree in a counter-clockwise fashion. Reiner is quick to nab the other end, twirling around in the other direction and always grunting a little to make sure Eris hops over the wire when they meet at a point. Pausing every now and then, Eris will look to Mars, giggling before going back to her little antics of playing hopscotch with the fairy lights.

Once they're more or less done wrapping the tree up, Eris carefully reaches for the bag of ornaments and pulls a silver pinecone out. "Did you know pinecones close when it rains and opens when its sunny?" It had been one of the first things her mother had taught her, just to pique her interest about the woods behind their house. Even now, such a tiny little fact sticks strong in her own memories.

Setting it down on the table, Eris pulls up a small piece of paper from her satchel and quickly scribbles something on it before folding it up. That would be probably something she'd have to ask Locke Jamison to deliver later... Maybe she could hand him cookies when she visited him at the office then!

With a cheeky smile, she tucks the paper out of sight and offers the ornament bag over.

"Put some up too, Mars!"
