"Defy your fate," Gavin repeats.

He'd been expecting doom and dread, instead finding the prophetic words to be strangely uplifting... at least where Mars was concerned. What better way to break the shackles of your past than to take charge of your own future? Yet it could be a slippery slope, as Gavin had learned to his own detriment in Kanto.

I have power, now. More than if I had gone a different way.

So he says, "Thank you for confiding in me."

It means a lot. Rocket are a notoriously tight-lipped bunch. Trust was a rare commodity in the faction. Yet in Mars revealing this truth, Gavin feels as if he can trust the admin more than before.

"Look to the stars." Gavin frowns. "Do you think your fate might somehow be tied to the meteor? I can only assume it'll come from the stars, no?"

Mars is not the sort of person who easily trusts, for trusting is what has led to the most painful betrayals of his life, it takes a lot for him to actually stop being suspicious of people and expecting the worst of them, and yet here he is, telling Cillian Quinn something so deeply personal that the only other person he has shared it with is his best friend.

It’s trust. The sort of trust Mars hadn’t even realised he had developed towards the underboss until those words left his mouth.

So, when hearing Gavin’s gratitude, Mars does no more than give a faint smile in response, since it’s clear at that moment that they both understand the significance of the gesture…

”I don’t know… It’s what Killian and I figured the ‘Look to the stars’ part must mean, since it’s the only thing that makes sense, but… When I gathered everyone and the Lake Trio spoke to us, their warnings were about something much different.” He pauses then, looking at Gavin. ”I actually planned on talking to you about it today.”

After all, everything that had happened at Slateport Park had been all too recently, and he would have done all this sooner hadn’t he needed some time to recover.

There are no words that must be spoken to cement an understanding of trust. Only two who had suffered as they had through their different trials could know what had passed between them. He reminds me of Marcel, Gavin realises, a twinge of sorrow in his gut. Before. Before Rocket had taken from his dear friend and turned him into a shell of the confident, prideful man the underboss had befriended in youth.

"Before the avalanche so rudely interrupted?" Gavin's laugh is brief on account of the cold that drives knives into his lungs. "Well, we're here now. Might as well find something to talk about 'til this wind lets up."

That wind tugs violently at his hair and bites at his skin, through even the layers of clothing he'd worn for the trip.

"What were their warnings?"

Laughter cuts through cold air and howling wind, the reality of their situation resulting ever so painfully ridiculous to him. Here they stand, two men who would never allow the dangerous whims of nature to be the end of them, stuck at the top of a mountain. Two men who definitely have much more important things to deal with…

A deep breath is needed, but the cold cuts through his lungs as if pointed shards. There’s a pause, and when Mars speaks again, his gaze is fixed on that of the underboss.

”Something’s coming to the Tree of Life… or it’s already there and we can’t perceive it. I saw a vision of it months ago, but was made to forget all about it – same with Eris.” Mars shakes his head then, his annoyance at this ever too obvious. Yet, he pushes past those feelings, well aware that the details of this are too important to let his frustrations dismiss them. ”It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen, Gavin, and in the vision… it killed Yveltal. ’One will steal the foundation of life. One will kill the apparition of death.’ That’s what they said… And that energy will be released and ruin everything.”

It sure is a lot to drop on someone at once, especially given where they are now.

”I would have told you sooner, but I wasn’t exactly in the condition to do much talking.”

Remembering that day all too recent is as if feeling all that pain again, and as much as he may have survived and overcome, memories of such suffering and defeat are unwelcome. Never again does he want to feel like he did then.

"It killed Yveltal?" Gavin's eyes are wide with horror. "Does Adrian Malcolm know? He is its vessel..."

The man had never particularly liked Gavin, yet the first thought on the underboss' mind is to warn him of the potential danger. He's not sure what benefit that might have, but if they were prepared for the threat perhaps they'd stand a better chance against it.

Defy your fate. If Martín del Mar could, why not them all?

His breath mists on a long exhale.

"Defy your fate," he muses. "Well, then we'll stop it, whatever it is."

Gavin might not have been a part of the Lake Trio's warnings, but he'd be damned if he stood to the side while the world fell apart. Whatever was to come, he'd stand by those who meant to face it.

A hand tugs through his blond hair, a contemplative frown upon his lips.

"I'll need to tell Walsh, but..." He cants his head. "If he has questions, you'd be the one to answer them. Together, perhaps?"

He had intended to, but until now he hadn’t been in the physical or mental condition to speak to anyone about what happened that day back at Slateport Park – aside from the things he told BARNABY FINCH that very same night. Plus, chances are Adrian had already been told about Mesprit’s words…

”I don’t know, I haven’t had the chance to talk to him, but Serena Malcolm was there the other day… So was priam conrad, Summer Atreides, and Eris herself.” It’s then that he takes a pause, and not just out of concern over Eris Halla’s condition. ”That’s another thing you should probably know; because of the other people involved, the League is likely also aware of all of this.”

Katherine Fairburne is obviously the bigger concern, but her name isn’t mentioned just yet. Too much information to drop all at once, all while stuck in a difficult situation.

"Hm. If Serena Malcolm was there, he might know already." His protégé was Adrian Malcolm's sister, after all. "Still, best to be safe."

His expression darkens at mention of the League, though it's not the fault of Locke Jamison. It's Eris Halla who inspires such bitterness. If there hadn't been a soul among the League present, he still wouldn't have trusted this to remain secret if she were involved. She may have only been a child, but she'd tarnished his trust one too many times.

His lips purse.

"Perhaps it's best if they do," he admits, grudging. "Doubt they want the world to end any more than we do."

Once they've settled the thought of informing Walsh, Gavin stares out over Hoenn from their mountainside view and realizes the storm isn't obscuring as much of it as before. It wasn't good weather, by any means, but he thinks it would be good enough for his Corviknight. After all, the species were used as a taxi service in all of Galar, Circhester included.

"Let's get off this damn mountain before our dicks freeze off," he proclaims, and tosses a pokeball into the air.
