Despite recent events (or perhaps because of them), it is often that Mars finds himself visiting Sootopolis’ bay. Most people would believe this to be because of the bank’s presence in the city and the continued effort to help its inhabitants return to their usual way of life, but of course, most people don’t know about the banker’s more… questionable affiliations.

Perhaps that is part of why he had avoided stepping near the concert hall until now.

Even if, when the time comes for him to finally enter Sootopolis’ gym, it’s with a bright and flawless smile that he greets it’s leader – acting as if nothing is amiss. ”Miss Miró! It’s been a while. Nice concert hall you got here.”

Naturally, CEO as he is, Mars is dressed to fit the part; clad in an elegant and well-tailored suit while a pink-tailed Meowth walks by his side. POG Bank’s own mascot, the one and only Cash Money.

The attendant in the lobby immediately recognized him and handed him a security pass to go further into the gym. Once he traversed down a long hallway he'd find melody patiently waiting at the end of it sitting on her stage kicking her feet as she waited idly for the next challenger. [break][break]

She finally looked up to see her next challenger and grew extremely excited. Martín! she shouted as she leapt down from her stage and rushed over to him to give him a hug "Hey! How have you been?! you're my next challenger?" she asked

Mars had not expected to be greeted with a hug, but he will never be the sort of person who dislikes things like those, and it’s with a grin that he reciprocates the gesture.

”You know me, I’m always doing great! How have you been, though?”

Not really, he hasn’t been doing great at all. In fact, he’s doing so not great that he has to take medicine, be careful about his health, and make sure not to get too stressed because it could potentially be fatal or whatever it was that his doctors always said (he’s not good at listening to them). But, Mars is Mars, and of course Mars will always smile and laugh and pretend as if his life is as perfect as people imagine it must be.

Maybe if he pretends hard enough, if he’s good enough at it, he will also convince himself one day…

Melody bends down to scratch meowth's head. "Awwww a cutie, with a funny name too. Are you guys close?" she asked as the whole theme of Melody's gym was to be close to a Pokémon and test their friendship. [break][break]

if mars were to look up he'd see that a shadow was watching idly from the rooftop and as soon as he'd blink it was gone and now next to them. Cobalion had decided to grace them with his presence. "Oh hey cobalion. You interested in meowth and mars?" she asked as she went over to ruffle his fur.

Truth be told, Melody’s question catches him off-guard, for rarely does Mars stop to consider his relationship with his pokémon. Are he and his Meowth close? He may not really be all that close with most of them (there’s a lot of them, after all), but Cash Money herself?

”I guess you could say that… She’s the bank’s favourite mascot, so she often keeps me company when I’m working. For some reason, she really likes hanging out in my office.”

And in his office in Team Rocket’s sub as well, but obviously, it’s not like he would say such a thing to Melody.

He does smile, though. Especially when seeing the Meowth respond to the gym leader’s affection by closing her eyes as if pleased and gently purring.

It’s then when he notices Cobalion just as it appears next to them.

She had to scrutinize his answer! It was her job to! "OOoohh is that so?" she asked curiously trying to see "So you're saying it's a one sided affection?" she asked as a devilish grin appeared across her face as she wanted to have some fun with Mars first. "I hope you can keep up then. You're friendship and teamwork with your pokemon is pivotal to winning my challenge ya know." [break][break]

Cobalion switches between staring at his meowth and staring at Martín del Mar as the two talked. "Thanks! Haha, a lot of people are scared of him but he isn't scary! He just has a hard time expressing himself!" she said as she scratched his fur, it was good thing Melody was the worst person at taking a hint. It's how their friendship has survived so far but Cobalion kind of liked that about her, she was pure and innocent with a heart of gold for Pokémon. [break][break]

"So! Are you ready? I think you signed up with another pokemon right?" she asked as she turned around and made her way back to the stairs as steps from the floor began to move up and met her footing to help her back onto her stage and cobalion leapt onto the stage and sat down, he didn't participate in her challenges.

Mars winks at her, because of course he does, and it’s then that Melody’s words on friendship and teamwork go completely ignored and not commented on. It’s not that he disagrees with her, it’s just that he thinks that those things aren’t always equivalent: a pokémon can be a loyal teammate without being a friend. It’s what most of his own are to Mars, useful tools, while the Meowth could be called closer to a friend and a companion despite the mega stone hanging from the elegant collar around her neck. She’s one of the few exceptions.

”Ha. If there’s anyone out there who’d see the kindness in even the most stoic pokémon, that’s you, Melody.”
[break][break]
He smiles, amused at the contrast between the legendary pokémon’s personality and that of Melody Miro, but his words are honest all the same – it’s not hard to figure out what Cobalion may have seen in Melody when choosing her. If only for a second, his gaze lingers on the Iron Will Pokémon, only to then follow after the gym leader with his Meowth in tow.

”I did, yeah.” It’s from a perfectly polished Luxury Ball that an Oricorio Pa’u is summoned, the bird shaking its pink feathers with flair. ”I figured it’d be fitting.”

Brave or?" she asked wondering if she could gleam some insight into his decision as that might influence her own decision. "If you wanna change it this would be your last chance, if you decide not to I'll start right away." she grinned as Cobalion moved over to her side and sat down.

Did Melody not see him wink? Shame, Mars would have loved to see how she reacted to something like that, but then again, other opportunities are likely to come. For now, he simply smiles, warm honey-coloured eyes meeting the gym leader’s gaze.

Inevitably so, there’s a chuckle when she comments on his choices, because talk about other opportunities indeed…

Words said without hesitation or shame, a smirk tugging at his lips. Nearby, the Meowth rolls her eyes, almost as if she’s all too used to hearing Mars do this sort of stuff – which she definitely is.

Melody had seen it, but if there was one characteristic that summarized Melody it was dense. She didn't really think much of the wink as it would take someone probably confessing directly for her to even realize that kind of stuff. The last person who tried something like that got an instinctive punch in the face. [Break][break]

"Nope! Not really, only rules is to not deal any damage to my Pokémon! Everything else is free game! Get as creative as you want!" she grinned as she pulled up two pokeballs and tossed them into the air and the music began. A remix of what seemed to be spanish music began to play as an announcer began with a "GOOD DAY FOR A SWELL BATTLE" and melody and her pokemon got into a starting position"HERE GOES" he shouts to announce the match starting "PIN MISSLE AND AIR SLASH! GO!" she orders as they both focused their attacks onto Martín del Mar 's meowth

Thankfully for him, he’s not the kind of person who takes things like those as a personal offence, and he soon finds himself distracted by the challenge anyway…

”Creative? Oh, we can do that. You’ll see.” He grins, and sure enough, Melody would soon see, for a somewhat unorthodox plan to avoid the first wave of attacks is set in motion the moment her pokémon appear upon the stage. ”Pyrrhic, base. Cash, flash.”

Anyway, it’s time for some cheerleader style stunts!

See, Cash Money happens to be around 600 grams heavier than Mars’ Oricorio, but dancing is a great exercise and it has made Pyrrhic strong enough to toss the Meowth high up in the air as if she were a flyer in a Pokémon Bring It On spin-off.

High enough to avoid the attacks coming her way, perhaps?

While up there, the amulet on her forehead catches the stage lights, reflecting them in a FLASH intended to blind their opponents or make them look away…

Away towards the Oricorio down below, perhaps?

Oricorio who, at the time, happens to be using ATTRACT on his Baile counterpart. He winks with it, of course, even blowing a kiss, because 'like trainer, like pokémon', right?

Who knew that Martín del Mar 's Oricorio was also a body builder? Meowth sailed clear of the pin missle attack launched by Maractus much to it's dismay, as both pokemon stared at the flying cat who would hopefully land on his feet, they both screamed as the flash of light blinded them and created a spotlight effect for the pau Oricorio who then managed to charm melody's baile forme "Baba! NO! DONT FALL FOR HIS CHARMS!" she says stomping her foot in frustration, but it was too late, his earlier feat won her heart over momentarily making her unable to attack this round.[break][break]

But, that didn't mean that Maractus couldn't! "Prickly! make it harder for them to move! Cotton spore!" she ordered as Maractus's flowers bloomed and bore cotton on them that then flew towards their enemies and stuck onto them to make it harder for them to move. Melody's Oricorio named baba took a turn infatuated with her new love as melody tried to snap her out of it with several spanish words that would make a nun blush.

Is Mars’ Oricorio somehow much more charming than him?! If he were someone else, he might have just been having a crisis of confidence at these moments. Instead, he just chuckles at the sight of Melody’s Baile Oricorio being temporarily head over heels (or is it ‘head over talons’) for his own Pa’u one.

Inevitably so, this chuckle turns into a laugh when hearing the Spanish curses coming out of the gym leader’s lips.
[break][break]
”Melody, tesoro, come on… Aren’t we all here to have a fun battle?” He smiles, his gaze temporarily lingering on her before falling upon the blooms created by her Maractus. ”Beautiful choice. Having always been one to appreciate flowers, Mars means his words, even if it may also be a bit of an annoying choice…

”Stay close. Safeguard.”
[break][break]
His pokémon know that this time he’s addressing them, and paw to wing, they dance together – the Oricorio only letting go for a second to flick his fan with grace and thus create a SAFEGUARD around them. It’s then that that smile of his shifts into a smirk.

”Cash, you know what to do.”
[break][break]
Is the Meowth smirking as well? She moves her cute behind with surprising rhythm and skill, and when she does as much, her pink-tipped tail sways as if a pendulum, intending to HYPNOTISE Melody’s pokémon and pull them into slumber. Mainly her Maractus, because apparently Cash Money doesn't like flowers.

He was most certainly fulfilling the educational goal of his pokemon so far, his performance with them was absolutely dazzling. But how dare he try to show her up! This was her gym! If mars was a Pokémon he had most certainly used taunt enough times on melody that she was lashing out for it. It was starting to seep into her strategy a bit as well.
