Dashing through the snow on a Stantler-led sleigh was quite the way to travel after some hot cocoa with friends. In Fortree City and the surrounding area, however, it was the only way to travel this year. Snow had been falling from the sky in heaps, putting all the taxis— airborne or otherwise— out of commission for the time being.

But heavy snow didn't reserve its disruptions for transportation alone.

Bells on bob-tail ring jingle and jangle as the Stantlers come a stop in front of Luka's reserved ClefairBNB... almost completely buried beneath an avalanche. The condominium, along with several others, had fallen victim to the mounds of snow that had been gathering on the countless tree branches above.

"What a shame... and all the hotel rooms are booked for the holiday!" The bundled up sleigh driver expresses, slapping his thigh with a lamenting shake of his head. Looking over his shoulder at the two sitting in his carriage, snuggled close together like two birds of a feather would be, he asks: "Welp... where to next?"

Remiel gauges Luka's reaction for a moment, blue eyes flitting from the avalanche to her glistening eyes. "Well... I'm headed to my treehouse next, if you'd like to come," He offers with a gentle smile. "I have a spare room."

Honestly, the inconvenience doesn't bother her that much.[break][break]

Is it annoying? Sure, maybe. But secretly Luka blesses the snowfall for leaving her stranded, for it gives her the perfect excuse to spend a little more time with her debonair companion.[break][break]

"A treehouse?"

Honestly, she doesn't care where they go. A Rose by any other name would smell as sweet; being with Remiel, no matter where they are, is always a delight. Luka nods as she cuddles in a little closer, pulling her scarf up around her neck to protect from the wind when their sleigh picks up speed again.[break][break]

"I don't think I would have expected a treehouse from you," she admits with a laugh. Maybe a palace, a chalet hidden away amidst a winter wonderland. "But now I'd really like to see it! As long as I'm not intruding..."[break][break]

Even if she is, what's he going to do? Leave her stranded in the cold? Snow whisks past them in a platinum blur and sleigh bells chime as they race to the treehouse, and Luka clings to her companion even tighter. She can barely enjoy the scenery that whirrs by, too busy peeking up at Remiel, then looking away as soon as he meets her eye...rinse and repeat, like a schoolgirl with a silly little crush.

The way she regards the word 'treehouse' brings a knowing smile to his slightly flushed face, glowing like a budding ROSE in winter at its cheeks. But he doesn't fail to notice how she promptly settles into the idea either. Ramshackle abode or not, Luka seemed wholly invested in the idea of spending time with him.

And he couldn't say he didn't covet the idea of spending the holiday with her himself.

"Treehouses are fun. I like treehouses." He reasons, an arm wrapped close around her as she settles into his body closer. When she suggests she might be intruding, he chuckles and gently grasps his gloved hand with her own. "Well, you see, there's typically a 'no girls allowed' rule enforced... but I suppose I'll make an exception for you." He teases, nuzzling into her.

A chime of laughter rings out as their sleigh gets moving again, the muffled trot of Stantler hooves in the snow as they approach the aforementioned destination.

A private, wooden elevator carries them to the deck of Remiel's treehouse smoothly, granting them a bird's eye view of Fortree below before the sight is obscured by frosted leaves. When they reemerge, higher than most of the houses in the city, Remiel unlocks the elevator gate and escorts his date out, eager to see her reaction.

The treehouse, as it turns out, proves to be one of Fortree City's most luxurious structures. Though it fit the bill of a 'treehouse' at its core, it resembled something more like a one-story wooden penthouse hanging high amongst the trees. Thick cables and support structures kept it still and safe. A pyramid-shaped rooftop naturally allowed rain (or, in this case, snow) to slide off its edges.

Clasping his hand around hers, Remiel gently pulls Luka close and escorts her across the front deck. It's kept clear of ice and snow thanks to a heating system that runs throughout the property. "Still not what you expected?" He asks, a gleam of curiosity and playfulness in his eyes.

"Ehh, really? For little ol' me? I'm flattered!" Luka takes the teasing in stride and playfully shoulder checks Remiel before they settle in for the rest of their ride. She knows he's joking...even so, she likes to think that he's in earnest. It's very fun, pretending to be special to someone.[break][break]

The treehouse in her imagination is a quaint little thing. Sturdy and well built, but hardly any bigger than her bedroom. She hasn't had a chance to truly explore Fortree's architecture until now, so she doesn't realize yet just how expansive these structures can be. She imagines quarters that are cramped but cozy, like an old log cabin out in the woods. A place that's just shelter enough to weather out the snow and cold.[break][break]

That's right! It's bound to be chilly up in the trees. They'll have to stay huddled together for warmth all night and then, and then...[break][break]

Luka's dangerous line of thinking is interrupted as soon as they reach the elevator. What she's met with instead is a structure far grander than her own rinky-dink apartment. Luka gapes up at it while the elevator makes a slow ascent, and her jaw remains on the floor when they reach the glorified treehouse.[break][break]

She races to the porch railing as soon she's able, leaning over it as snowflakes lazily drift onto her hair. "N...no," she marvels aloud, staring out at the marvelous view spread before them like a blanket. "Not what I was expecting at all..."[break][break]

This is how ambassadors live? She hadn't expected it to be quite so glamorous. Or maybe Remiel's just from one of those old money families in Galar. There's bound to be plenty, after all. Maybe he's a Duke's son? A Count?[break][break]

FERNANDO SILPH had told her once that it would be best to familiarize herself with the upper crust of Hoenn. Obviously, she hasn't taken up on his advice that well.[break][break]

"It's beautiful, Monsieur...y-you're sure I can stay here? Really?"

Expensive things and diamond rings pale in comparison to her smile and awe. Symbols of status, including the royal blood that runs through his veins, don't often go flaunted or regarded at all. Even now, despite a Christmas party he plans on hosting soon at his estate, Remiel can't help but feel a little awkward about the whole thing.

Thankfully, Luka's enthusiasm and excitement are infectious, and suddenly he doesn't find himself so self-conscious about it all anymore. "Haha, yes, of course!" He assures her, reaching out with an outstretched hand. "Come. I'll show you inside, mademoiselle."

Was it bad to be thankful for an avalanche? Only if someone died, he thinks.

Luka doesn't follow right away. Instead she continues to stare out, drinking in the view. In the distance, she can see where the weather institute's mishap no longer takes effect, a hard line between brilliant white and lush green. It makes the winter landscape they're in seem all the more surreal, like the two of them exist within a magical snowglobe.[break][break]

Just the two of them. Luka finally turns back to Remiel, her cold-bitten cheeks feeling all the warmer as she looks at him. Rather than take his hand, she loops her arm through his and smiles.[break][break]

"Then lead the way, Monsieur!"[break][break]

It's probably too much to hope that his treehouse is decked out for the season. But what if....

A pang of warmth blooms from inside his chest and spreads throughout his body with her gesture, a mixture of pride and affection as she locks her arm with his and presses close. Her smile is received and matched, then, without further ado, the pair step forward past the treehouse's intricately carved front door. The subtle scent of pine, peppermint, cedar, and vanilla bean instantly hits.

And the treehouse proves to be nothing short of a holiday bastion.

It is a winter refuge that resembles a large wooden cabin from the inside, complete with two rooms, kitchen, bar, and a cozy back deck. Though the interior lounge area, decked out with boughs of holly, glittering garlands, sparkling tinsel, and more, proves to be most impressive. Even Remiel takes a moment to close the door behind them and admire it all.

A large Christmas tree seems to sprout out straight from its center, owing its comfort to the tall pyramid-shaped ceiling above them. It's a little naked, however, save for a few scarves of tinsel wrapped it. The half-open box of Christmas decorations and the small step ladder beside it make it abundantly clear that the ambassador had been in the process of decorating it himself, before leaving for their little rendezvous in the snow earlier.

One of his many attempts to understand and get to know what the true 'spirit of Christmas' was all about.

Offering to gently take off her jacket for her, and hang it at the coat rack with any other outer layers she cared to shed, the royal speaks. "Make yourself at home, Luka. Oh, and apologies for the mess," He adds, regarding the unfinished Christmas tree as he takes off his own jacket and gloves afterward.

Nearby, a quaint little flat screen TV seems to switch on of its own accord, playing some Christmas movie about a mischievous kid who gets lost in Jubilife City without his parents. A black, electric fireplace stove sits below the TV, and in front of them a U-shaped sofa covered in festive throw pillows and soft plush blankets. "Do you fancy a tea? Hot chocolate? I also mixed a nice eggnog earlier." He cheerily boasts.

Luka gasps the moment they step into Remiel's cozy treetop cabin. Eager eyes drink the entire sight in, and marvel at every detail. It's perfect, from the charming log walls to the festive garlands and twinkling fairy lights, and she even adores the sparsely decorated tree in the middle of the room.[break][break]

"It's wonderful, Monsieur Calcifet!" she exclaims. "It's perfect! Gosh..."[break][break]

She shrugs off her frock coat with Remiel's help, and it's hung along with her gloves, scarf, and knit winter hat. Her boots are quickly unlaced and left neatly by the door as well, leaving her to pad around in stockinged feet.[break][break]

"Hmm...since we already had that cocoa earlier, maybe some eggnog? Thank you!" She does love a good, seasonally appropriate beverage. While she speaks she begins to edge towards the tree and the open box of ornaments. "Do you, um...d-do you mind if I help out with this a little bit?"

Remiel is in the process of untying his own boots and leaving them at the door when his lovely date pads forward, dreamily immersing herself in the treehouse's main living area. Hours ago, even when there had been more sunlight to spare, this place had seemed as boring and dreary as any other. Now, with Luka inside of it, it seemed to radiate a comfortable glow.

He was growing accustomed to the idea that she brought that energy to every place she visited. And, admittedly, he thrived on it.

"Egg nog it is," He smiles, hanging his scarf last before walking across the floor on navy blue, snowflake-pattern socks. He pauses, halfway to the kitchen, to look over his shoulder when she makes her inquiry. "Oh? Are you certain? I don't want to seem like a bad host putting you to work." The royal chuckles, running a hand through his hair. "Hmm... but if you insist, I'll come help you after I prepare our eggnog. Deal?"

Truth be told, the only reason his maid hadn't done it earlier was because he'd forgot to place the order for DELIBIRD DELIVERIES on-time. Which, to the ambassador, was quite embarrassing.

His sentiment isn't too far off. Luka exudes into the world the same kind of love she'd like to receive. She treads on warmth and daydreams, and her patchwork heart emits a soft glow.[break][break]

She's still inching towards the tree when Remiel grants her permission. And then she descends upon the box of ornaments with a childish glee, immediately ooh'ing and aah'ing over the gorgeous baubles all packed away.[break][break]

"Deal! Besides, it's hardly work," Luka explains with a laugh. "It's fun! The tree at my place is so small," she laments with a shrug, "So it'll be nice to decorate a biiiig one!"[break][break]

By the time Remiel returns the tree is already looking more cheerful. The pine boughs are now illuminated with twinkling lights (they just hadn't been plugged in!) and a cherry red ribbon is twined all around the tree as well. Luka's stretching up, up, up on her toes to start hanging ornaments when he arrives, hanging chiming bells as high up as she can reach.

Remiel suppresses the urge to make a 'go big or go home' remark, considering such extravagance had always come by him naturally. Truth be told, he was much more curious to see her tree. As small as it may or may not be, Luka had no doubt placed more spirit into it as Remiel (or his weekly maid service) ever could have.

But the royal laughs, nodding his head before resuming his trek to the kitchen. "Very well. I'll be right back!"

The clink of dishware, a running faucet, and a pair of smooth pours sound out from the prep area before Remiel returns with two winter-themed mugs in each hand. He can't help but awe at Luka's handiwork so far before setting them down on the coffee table nearby. The way the step ladder wobbles as she stands on her toes makes him a tad bit nervous.

"Perhaps we should switch places," The royal says, ready to catch her should the jingling of the bells precede a misstep. "I'm tall enough to reach that high... no offense, of course." He cheekily smiles.

Remiel nearly causes that very mishap himself. Luka gasps and wobbles backwards when his voice startles her, breaking her out of a tree-induced reverie. Thank goodness he's there behind her, ready to steady her before she takes a nasty tumble onto the floor.[break][break]

"Ah, um...sorry, I'm sorry! I was, um....i-in the zone, I guess?" Her embarrassed laughter mimes the jingle bells that hang from the tree. Once she's righted herself Luka sheepishly climbs down from the stepladder, giving into Remiel's suggestion almost immediately.[break][break]

"But that would, um, probably be for the best," she admits, her cheeks pink and heart still hammering away in her chest. Is it because of the scare, or their proximity? Probably both. He really has a dangerous effect on her.[break][break]

Ornaments are handed up to Remiel once they swap places. Luka chooses each carefully and points out where best to put them until they're low enough that she can help again. The micro-managing might be annoying, but the result is charming; by the time they're halfway down the tree, it already looks lovely.

The near mishap spawns a flashback to their first meeting at the sauna: a stumble that leads to a reactionary chain of events, fingers sinking gently into bare flesh as a towel threatens to slip away and reveal it all. They're dressed far more modestly now than before, of course. But a faint blush spawns on his cheeks regardless as he places his hands at her hips and steadies her again.

When she turns, Remiel smiles and laughs it all off himself, relieved to switch places with her and help. The sheepishness he spots, cute and strangely alluring on her countenance, does not go unnoticed as he moves up. In fact, it shifts that smile into a slight smirk in his eyes.

Their faces, wide and distorted, reflect off a large red Christmas ball like some funny carnival mirror as Remiel carefully hooks it to a pine needle. With her cheery direction and his dexterity, they've made quick work of the decorations. No longer needing the step ladder, the royal descends and reaches into the box for the last Christmas ball therein: an orb of Christmas blue with intricate snowflake pattern, gilded silver at its top.

"Except for this last one, I think that just about does it... don't you?" He says, stepping back to admire their handiwork. He then regards the ball he holds carefully in his hand, and glances at Luka with a playful gleam before stepping closer.

Gently, his free hand cups her chin with a pair of fingers, lifting it up slightly as the other hovers the Christmas ball just above her bosom. Gauging it as he would a necklace for a moment, Remiel meets her gaze afterward. "This color compliments your eyes quite well, actually. Maybe you should keep this one with you."

It's not that she's forgotten, but honestly the memory still makes her blush. It's pushed back to the back of her mind, and she doesn't realize that it's something to be looked back on lecherously. In her opinion, all she'd done that day was make a fool of herself.[break][break]

But the tree is finished! And right now, that's all that matters. Luka steps back in order to fully admire it, her eyes as bright and happy as the fairy lights that twinkle upon every verdant bough. It's beautiful, almost regal. Remiel's ornaments are strikingly elegant, not like the kitschy, cutesy ones that decorate one of the trees in her apartment (yes, she has two).[break][break]

"It's beautiful," she breathes with a happy sigh. Her face feels warm, not just from the simple bliss of this moment, but from her fourth glass of eggnog. She glances over at Remiel as he roots through the box again, but honestly doesn't pay much attention until he's standing in front of her, the last delicate ornament held aloft.[break][break]
