Though he'd thought little of it, the wild Woobat Derek passes by becomes infuriated by how he was obvious ignoring her. As if she wasn't good enough to be properly trained—oh, the nerve! Likewise, she flings a gust the ranger's way.

Leaping out of the way, Derek can hardly believe the audacity of this pokemon. Regardless of this, he seems adamant on giving it a reason not to attack him further. A pokeball is quickly lobbed, sending his Grimmsnarl, Crota, flying at them. "Ice punch!" The sudden arrival of this ebon-haired monster struck fear deep into the Woobat, causing it to hesitate. The swift blow from the Grimmsnarl swatted it down, even going so far as to freeze the little Woobat. Whether it was unconscious or not, he couldn't tell. But that didn't stop Derek from gesturing for Crota to follow as they continued on their way in search of pokemon...

Because of that outburst, the next pokemon Derek finds is not so lucky. Rather than ignore the Kecleon, he sends his Machamp after it, commanding a "Dynamic punch!" to see to it that the lizard cannot deal them any harm. It's slow response to the unwarranted attack causes it to fall victim to paralysis, which they quickly take note of.

"I hope you didn't break it's spine or anything." Derek mentions with Randal at his side, who looks shocked. "Everything does this when you hit them with that move, though, so I guess it really is quite the stunner."

Plucking an empty red and white orb from a pouch, Derek secures the injured, paralyzed victim in order to take it to the pokemon center in Rustboro. From there, he'd have quite a bit of work on his hands getting it to trust him...
