The sight of the Ledian and the shining dust they leave behind as they swarm the sky is tranquil. Peace enough to quell a rumbling storm in Xander's heart. Or so he hopes. Ever since father knocked on his door, there's been a sense of unease in him. @idris meant well, he's sure, but the old man always got his under his skin. [break][break]

If the beauty of nature didn't balance the scales in his heart, then mom certainly would. By some miracle, she'd shown up shortly after dad. Not unexpectedly at his door, mind you. Yvette Belmont respected him enough to at least call. [break][break]

Xander lifted his eyes from his sketchbook and looked in his mother's direction. "It's nice and all, but you didn't have to join me. This type of ranger work can be pretty dull. A lot of waiting around." of course, he'd told her all of this before, but she hadn't listened to him.

”Waiting around is about ninety percent of zoology, hun,” she said, tapping her journal. ”And I sure don’t mind doing it with you.”

Yvette cracked open her book and settled in next to her son, while Frida hopped onto a nearby rock, kicking her little legs out as she glanced between the swarm, Xander’s sketchbook, and her own. The Ledian seemed to be doing most of the dancing, while the younger Ledyba were all huddled together off to the side, looking very tired.

”So is this how Hoenn’s league keeps their Rangers busy these days? Pretty tame compared to what we’re used to.”

"When there's nothing else going on, yeah." he'd been slacking a bit on his Ranger duties, honestly. They'd fallen by the wayside in favor of his responsibilities as a gym leader. Then there was working under Katherine Fairburne. Juggling so many things, it's a miracle he has time to sleep.[break][break]

Xander licked his lips. "They had me rescuing a lost child a few months back." his chest grew tight recalling the events. Death graced him a second time during the operation. The reaper's words still echoed during moments of solitude.[break][break]

"We shall see..." [break][break]

"This reminds me of when you took Kiara and me camping in Lostlorn Forest." They'd gotten into so much trouble trying to chase down a Emolga.

Yvette tensed at the almost casual mention of a lost child, her pen pausing over the page as she braced herself for further details. She was spared, thankfully, by another change of subject, this time of the more nostalgic kind.

She smoothed her expression back into an easy grin, recalling that weekend getaway years prior. ”Figures not even the word Lost being in the name could stop you two from running off.”

There was time, when she younger and more single-minded in her ambitions, that Yvette would’ve balked at the idea of children. They’d have only slowed her down.

And now…

”It warms my heart to know I unleashed such menaces on the world.” She reached over a pinched Xander’s cheek as she said it, and left her fingers there for a little longer when she realized it was their first bit of contact since he’d moved.

The moment didn’t last long, as she brushed the melancholy off with a little pat and a wide grin. ”Half the fun’s in the chase anyhow, so I think you two got all you needed out of it!”

"Hey!" he pulled away from her pinch, "That stings." but his smile said he wasn't too upset. Xander didn't even have to force this one. A rarity for him these days. [break][break]

"You and dad might enjoy the chase, but I prefer the destination." The goal is what made the journey worth it. [break][break]

Xander shifted in the grass, golden suns following one of the Ledian as it rushed past them. "Their dust reminds of falling stars." beautiful and poetic, "Think if we made a wish on them it come true?"

Yvette clicked her tongue. ”Always in such a hurry…” She chided, though her scolding lacked any real bite. She’d always been the more “free-range” parent, after all.

Xander’s soulful musings brought a smile back to her face, the gentle kind reserved just for her eldest, and she wondered not for the first time how she and @idris ever imagined him as anything but an artist.

”Now as a woman of science Xander,” she said in a faux-serious tone (that maybe pulled a little teasing inspiration from her husband). ”You know it would deeply damage my reputation to indulge in silly things like ’wishes’.” She snorted at her own dumb joke, bringing the act to an end.

”But, as a romantic…I’d wish for a nice big dinner with the whole family.”

Did he rush things? Xander's brow wrinkled in thought. Maybe before he died, but afterward, he moved at a snail's pace. Barely able to escape the past while others sped into the future. [break][break]

He sighed, tension leaving his face.[break][break]

"Really, a family dinner? That sounds so - " simple, hardly wish-worthy. Then Xander remembered his dad and how hard it be to get through a meal next to @idris. "like you'd need a wish for it." [break][break]

What would his wish be? Not dinner, as sad as that was to admit. [break][break]

"I'd wish to be happy."
