The new year demands for a new adventure, heralded by footprints left behind in Ultra radiation snow.[break][break]

“Should’ve asked for gloves in that letter,” Angelo mumbles in dry hindsight, fingers stiffly flexing into a fist then back again to get the blood flowing to each joint.[break][break]

At least the rest of him was warm, his old reliable boots and leather jacket having proven their worth within the cold air of the skies time and time again. [break][break]

And at least as he walks beneath the snow dusted trees of the Safari Zone, world looking like it had been in an icing sugar war, his company promised warmth. [break][break]

Like a ghostly apparition, his Charizard of ash and blue whirl fades amongst the wintery backdrop. Shrike is silent, parting the sparkling dust drifting in the breeze like a guillotine. An inaudible apex. [break][break]

At least in flight. [break][break]

With a thump and a scattering of powder, she lands close to Angelo with a chorus of grumbles and snorting snuffles, piercing eyes scanning for the source of a pretty jingling that chimes through the trees. He can feel the blue flame radiating off her.[break][break]

It’s appreciated, given how she’d doused him not five seconds ago.[break][break]

“This way.” Trudging through the snow, Angelo tilts his head towards a Chingling that sits on a low branch with a merry song. “Just don’t eat it.” He shoots Shrike a side-eye, brow mockingly raised, before taking out a pokeball. [break][break]

She huffs. [break][break]

Crunching snow beneath heavy footfalls is soon joined by the sound of bubbling, their walk leading them towards a woodland stream that flows just the slightest too swiftly for ice to form. [break][break]

Angelo doesn’t take the option of having Shrike lift him over the river. Even if he had yet to fly on her, their companionship still too fresh, making his own way across was much more his speed. [break][break]

Just a short stroll upstream sees a path of slippery rocks jutting out of the water surface. It’s not a perfect bridge by any stretch but he doesn’t reconsider. [break][break]

First things first. Angelo throws a pokeball at an Oshawott that sits on the middle most stone, washing its little face in the stream, to clear the way. Then he turns to Shrike, who’s watching him with a curious – and perhaps slightly judgemental – tilt of her head. [break][break]

“I’ll go first, then.”

Over a year ago he’d jumped rocks over a river like this with skyler dross. It’s a vivid memory, leaping hastily over the slippery surfaces in a bid to best her and win a promised, lucrative prize. One that he still has not received to this day. [break][break]

Unlike that time however, Angelo’s foot does not crash into Carvanah infested waters. [break][break]

The pilot avoids the plunge into the frigid river with an easy couple of bounds in comparison, long strides sure and agile until his boots touch the opposite side of the riverbank. [break][break]

Unlike last time the satisfaction is far more uneventful, too. [break][break]

“You comin’? It’s not as far as it looks. Promise.” Turning back, it’s noted that Shrike has not moved from the opposite side of the river. Although Angelo’s tame provocation is enough to have the fiery Charizard snorting ash, cobalt wings unfurling. [break][break]

Snow sprays and an unfortunate Cyndaquil nearly gets swept up in the current as it plods innocently down the side of the river. Thankfully, Angelo has a spare safari ball close to hand to make sure it doesn’t get swept into the water.

Matias Silph was right. She did remind him of his wife. [break][break]

It’s in the sharp eyes, reactive emotions and the petty acts of competition that has Angelo’s lips curling sly with a hint of recognition. [break][break]

He’d yet to earn the Charizard's trust enough to fly with her, yet the longer he spends walking with her through the safari zone, the clearer the course to achieving that becomes. Respect garnered through actions and attitude would not be an overnight prize, however. [break][break]

Shrike flies just the slightest ahead as per her nature, but Angelo ensures he keeps pace, never letting her out of his sight. Snow thick beneath his boots or not. [break][break]

“Not that way,” he calls when she makes to swerve beneath a canopy of pine, a Rowlet’s hoo echoing through the maze. Blue meeting blue. [break][break]

“It’ll take us back to the entrance. And I’m not tired enough to call it quits just yet, there's still a lot more to see.” [break][break]

Lo and behold, it seems Shrike isn't ready to head back home, either.

By the time that Angelo and Shrike have completed their walk through the Safari Zone, they’d seen sprawling valleys with snow dusted peaks and slow flowing rivers frozen in time beneath sheets of frosted glass. Still. Peaceful. [break][break]

It had been shattered by a loud ‘shit!’ when a step off the path had seen his leg plunging into a thigh-high snowdrift. [break][break]

Angelo had carried on afterwards, far too stubborn and unwilling to buckle beneath Shrike’s watchful glare. Keeping pace even though chills prickle like sharp needles on his skin. [break][break]

She’d better fucking like him now he had to walk through the rest of the Safari Zone with one cold, damp sock… [break][break]

Thankfully, help arrives after being alerted to the sound of his startled shout. A Growlithe trotting along at Angelo’s heels all the way back to the front gate, its heat mercilessly warming his ankles. [break][break]

He appreciates the little shadow so much so, that he completely forgets to send it back. It follows him all the way back to his plane.
