Even before Angelo reaches the reception desk, his presence is announced. [break][break]

But then, amongst the sharply dressed suits that flow back and forth over the main foyer like they’d come fresh off the manufacturing belt, he was always going to stand out. [break][break]

The pilot strolls straight down the middle of the floor, scuffed boots squeaking against freshly polished floors and fingers pulling goggles off wind-tousled hair, casualness worn on an unshaven face.[break][break]

It’s clear that this man does not walk the life of the corporate world. [break][break]

It’s also clear, as he reaches the front desk brandishing a subtle curl of his lips after parting the tide of employees to reach his destination, that he relishes in the fact that he doesn’t. [break][break]

“Mornin’. I've got a meeting with Mr POG Bank.” He stuffs the aviator goggles back into his perpetually half-full pockets, trading it for a crumpled business card – Martín del Mar ’s, detailing the meeting information in his penmanship – that Angelo holds out for them. [break][break]

“If you could tell him Angelo Vestri is waiting on him, that’d be great.”

Footsteps upon perfectly polished floors, the opening and closing of large glass doors, manicured fingers incessantly typing upon a mechanical keyboard. Clickety-clack. Around seventy words per minute. For, even when the year has just begun, everyone who steps into the bank’s corporate headquarters seems to be as busy as ever, and that includes the pretty receptionist that only puts a pause to her typing the moment the man addresses her.

”Mr POG Bank.” She repeats, an amused smile tugging at her glossy lips. Her gaze falls upon the crumpled business card first, only looking at the stranger after confirming his name is listed among the scheduled visits for the day. ”Welcome to Piazza Oro Grande’s corporate headquarters, Mr Vestri. Please take the lift to the last floor, Mr del Mar has been waiting for you.”

Is that a dig because of his comment?
[break][break]
Maybe, but there’s no time to dwell on it, for the receptionist's attention turns to the phone the moment she’s done speaking.
[break][break]
The lift has its own attendant, of course, and while going all the way up takes a moment, this is made more pleasant (or perhaps more annoying) by the gentle sound of piped music.
[break][break]
Marble floors await at the pilot’s destination, the place somehow seeming even fancier and more elegant than the floors beneath. Two assistants sit at their desks at both sides of an open door, and they both take the time to smile at Angelo when he walks by.

The CEO’s office itself?
[break][break]
Large, of modern décor aside from one Renaissance style painting. There’s an aquarium, a white couch on top of which a Persian naps, and right in front of a whole wall of windows that provide an excellent view of Slateport’s bay, there’s a desk by which sits no other than Martín del Mar.
[break][break]
As should only be expected, the sight of angelo vestri is met by an all too confident smile, one which the pilot is perhaps too familiar with by now.

Glossy lips tug at the corner, doing well to restrain the amusement beneath a professional surface. Only the pilot still catches it. [break][break]

Angelo’s grin only serves to widen at the hint of fire that falls off the tip of her tongue, his own mirth scarcely hidden in contrast. Especially when he isn’t given the option to retaliate, Mars’s receptionist severing the interaction with a phone call. Far too quick for him.[break][break]

“Thanks. Have a good one,” he chuckles, unoffended. [break][break]

From there, Angelo navigates the interior of POG Bank in all of its lustrous, pompous splendour with a nonchalant stride. Only taking particular note of how every step of the trek was maintained by an attendant adorning false, bright smiles.[break][break]

Shepherds to ensure guests didn’t wander off the beaten path, perhaps? Or did Mars need someone to hold his hand so he didn’t get lost on the way to the bathroom? [break][break]

At least when Angelo enters the CEO’s office, Mr POG Bank himself wore a smile that was far less fake. [break][break]

Cocky. Punchable. And more likeable for it. [break][break]

Angelo’s gaze only momentarily surveys the room, strolling into the depths of the high-rise office with hands casually stuffed in his pockets. He seems more taken by the view than the expensive possessions around the room. Barely takes any notice of the lounging cat, either. [break][break]

“Your very nice receptionist told me you’ve been eagerly waiting for me,” his eyes pointedly flick towards where hands of the clock slowly tick, nestled amongst the elaborate office décor. Right on time.[break][break]

“Thought you were meant to be a busy man, Mars? – I’m flattered.” [break][break]

An all too confident smile meets a rebellious flash of sharp teeth, both becoming increasingly familiar to the other. [break][break]

It’s yet to be decided whether that’s a good or bad thing.

If these offices were to be called his domain, then the chair he sits upon would surely be his throne, and angelo vestri with his rebellious smirk and jokes… Well, he must be a court jester or something, no?

At least it’s a breath of fresh air from the usual meetings that take place in this office. So much so that even the Persian perks up, its bright scarlet eyes watching both its owner and the pilot who sits across from him.

”Not even a ‘hi’? Angelo, you’re breaking my heart.”
[break][break]
Dramatic, exaggerated, and obviously joking words are followed by a chuckle, choosing to spare Angelo from being informed that that’s in fact the sort of thing the receptionist would say to anyone so that they feel special, important, and like POG Bank’s CEO really cares about that meeting in particular.

Is it true in this case?

Maybe so.
[break][break]
After all, why would he have Angelo come all this way if he didn’t wish to discuss something important.

”How do you like it? Bet you’d die working in a place like this, huh?” A slight smirk tugs at his lips, looking at the pilot from across the desk. ”You probably already guessed it, but I have a job proposal for you.”

Fingers curling around the back of the chair, Angelo takes a seat opposite Mars’s desk. Breath escaping him in a reminiscent chuckle as his ass hits the plush, expensive upholstery. “Y’know, I think I’ve been told something like that before.” [break][break]

There is no elaboration on where or whom had told him such an environment would be his undoing. Instead, the pilot casually leans back, leg propped up on one knee as he drums a nonsensical tune on the arm rests with short nails. [break][break]

A picture of uninhibited disregard to his prim surroundings. [break][break]

“It’s a’ight. Very you.” Somehow, it manages to sound like a compliment and the opposite of such, all at once. [break][break]

She was right, Angelo thinks, as he looks around the golden cage Mars has secured himself within. Behind the glass pane he would wither and fade. [break][break]

Good thing he can fly wherever he pleased, right? [break][break]

“I know it'll come to you as a shock, but I had a hunch.” Angelo grins, curiosity twinkling unmasked as his gaze shifts back to the businessman behind the desk. “First time you’ve invited me to your office for a business meeting, though. What’s the occasion?”

Perhaps an insult, perhaps a compliment, perhaps a mere factual statement given that it is indeed his office and thus furnished to his liking. Knowing Angelo, the comment is probably not meant to flatter him, but Mars being Mars, he takes it as the pilot not knowing how to appreciate the finer things in life. No problem of his.

”A hunch, huh? How perceptive of you.” It’s also left unclear if this is meant honestly or as sarcasm, that much being for Angelo to decide. Why did he ask him to come here when they usually discuss their business arrangements in a much more casual manner? Well, in truth, it’s because in his office there’s no one who can eavesdrop on their conversation…

Given the sort of people Mars has spent his life around, his caution is more than called for.

angelo vestri is no stranger to crime. As much as he may pretend, he has committed more than a few misdeeds just in his transport jobs for Mars himself, and yet when the time comes to speak of the job in question, the banker simply stares at him, an eyebrow quirked. ”Out of curiosity, how good would you say you’re at lying? If you had to pretend to be someone else, would you be able to do that?”

Whatever the reasoning for Mars breaking their usual business routine, it wasn’t just for kicks. [break][break]

Even though their usual arrangements were on the more casual side, phone calls and meetings in neutral spots, Mr POG Bank was no fool. They were always secure and details kept on a need-to-know basis, even amongst themselves. [break][break]

The invitation was not extended because he wanted to show off his office, the pilot knew. [break][break]

Angelo was not as foolish as he oft let on, either. [break][break]

Calm, blue eyes do not stray as Mars starts getting to the point by not getting to the point, although his eyebrow rebelliously lifts in a casual expression of wry curiosity. [break][break]

“What? D’you want me to give myself a ranking out of ten?” [break][break]

He'd had plenty of practice over the years. From the innocent white lies when caring for his siblings, to the self-destructive lies he told himself when he walked towards a future he didn’t want, when he smiles and jested to convince them he was fine. That he wasn’t a raging squall inside. [break][break]

Then there was the more dangerous, that saw a silver tongue dart over a gambling table or in the more nefarious of company… [break][break]

“But, yeah. If I wanted to, then I could do it.” The tune drummed on the armrest of the seat creases, no need for a backing track to accompany the confident steadiness in his voice. [break][break]

“Why?”

Obviously, Mars hadn’t arranged this meeting at his office to ask angelo vestri if he wants to be the star of his latest film. The man may own a production company, but sadly, unlike dearest luka chêne, the pilot isn’t exactly P.O.G Bank ad material.

Why had he asked him about his acting skills, then?

Well, because he’s no good, nefarious, and has the potential to become a proper criminal, of course. And, also because he’s a pilot.

Mars happens to be in need of both these things combined in one person.

”Good.” It’s not like he had expected a different answer, for Mars would have known that to be a lie. angelo vestri is a liar. Through and through. There’s no question about that in the banker’s mind. But, then again, that means they’re cut from the same cloth – two of the same kind. ”There’s a job I need to take care of personally, and because of the nature of it, I can’t involve a lot of people.”

It’s then that eyes of a shade as bright as the gold that this bank so carefully stores within vaults meet those as blue as the skies Angelo loves to traverse.

”I need someone I can trust. That person will be rewarded generously, of course.”
[break][break]
Mars reaches for a pad of bright yellow sticky notes, simple as they come, and upon the one at the very top, a sum is written with an all too expensive-looking pen – a sum much larger than anything he has ever paid the man before him until this day.

He offers Angelo the note without a word, his expression serious, but unbeknownst to the pilot, Mars is still low balling it. After all, this is Angelo, and he expects him to haggle at least a little.

[attr="class","angelow"]“Of course. You are asking for very niche qualifications.” And yet Angelo is pulled towards the proposal regardless of quips that roll habitually off the tongue, expression carefully neutral in his intrigue. It, in itself, a mask. [break][break]

Both feet hit the polished floor as he leans away from reclining into the plush seat, fingers outstretched to latch onto the marigold paper. But the pilot doesn’t return to his nonchalant position once the sticky note is transferred into his grasp, elbow instead propped on the armrest as his gaze slowly drags from Mars to caress the figures sprawled in neat writing. [break][break]

Generous, indeed. His expression doesn't change. [break][break]

Numbers wink temptingly up at him, more than he’d ever requested or been offered from Mars since their business partnership had begun. But Angelo does not fall for the charm of the gold that temptingly twinkles in his mind’s eye. It would be a foolish mistake to accept the first offer the banker lays on the table, and not just because he knows he can push for more…[break][break]

“Y’know, the amount is meaningless when you give me such a vague request to go by.” He comments, lifting his blue gaze up towards the client, their serious atmosphere swelling like a cloud to blot out the sunny banter they oft fall upon. Hidden, but never really gone. [break][break]

“What does this cover? Fuel? Docking fees? Transport? Dollars per adlibbed words of deceit?” With each point of service, the back of Angelo’s fingers tap against the note like punctuation marks. “Gotta give me more to go by so I know I’m not selling myself short, Mars.”[break][break]

He then extends his hand, palm flat and empty – waiting. Even though he has his own pen, tucked away in his jacket pocket.

It’s a lure.

As if deceptively-cute Lanturn hunting in the dark depths of the ocean, light being used to lure its victims into a false sense of security. It draws them close, it blinds them, and then, before they realise it, they become the lunchtime special for the Light Pokémon.

Mars’ motives aren’t nearly as cruel or as deadly, but he knows well that money works as a great motivator when dealing with someone like angelo vestri. It has been that way every time they have done business together, and when written in sums as large as the one in the bright yellow note the pilot now holds, it sure can leave certain people blind to the smaller details that lurk in the shadows.

The word distracts him for a second, but Mars pushes those photograph-like memories away – just as he does every time they become intrusive.

”Hm. Sure, all of those. Except for docking fees, maybe... We may have no need for that.” Whatever this may be, Mars doesn’t bother with immediately explaining. Instead, composed as ever, he reaches into one of the desk’s drawers to retrieve a tablet, also offering Angelo a nice POG Bank-themed ballpoint pen – just like the ones that are always near the tellers.

”There’s an auction happening on a small island in May. Far off the coast of Sinnoh.” On the tablet, a map is displayed, the island’s supposed future location being marked by a red dot. ”They’re auctioning something I need, but I can’t really go there as myself, so some… lying will be required.”

Hence the question regarding Angelo’s skills in that department.
[break][break]
Mars looks at him once more, leaving the explanations simple.
[break][break]

Between his fingers the POG Bank-themed ballpoint pen spins. Weaved with the sort of smooth finesse telling of a man who'd spent far too many school lessons restless, wistful blues window lured.

If it were a coin, it would not be unimaginable that a blink would see it disappear.

“Off the coast of Sinnoh? That's quite the trip.” Angelo comments, gaze remaining glued upon the map that blinks onto the tablet between the banker's hands.

Contrary to his relaxed posture and reactions, the pilot was intrigued. Listening as Martín del Mar steadily starts to reveal his cards, seemingly all designed to appeal to Angelo's temptations.

Adventure. Travelling. Piloting. And money.

He needed just one more for a flush...

“It's never an easy little ask from you, is it?” The smile he reveals despite his words is sharp, confident. Enjoying the direction of the scheme as the pen stops twirling. “But it sounds doable. With that generous reward, of course.”

At the mention of Mars wishing for him to attend the auction with him however, a click resounds from the ballpoint. Angelo wordlessly adjusting the figures on the note.

“My first condition. If we're attending a public event, it won't be with my plane.”

If, on the off chance, it doesn't go well then taking his own was like bringing a car with its original licence plate to a bank robbery. Besides, his beloved ol' trusty seaplane would no doubt not fit the banker's attended image at a fancy auction.

“But I'm sure it won't be hard for you to provide me with an alternative to use.”

Angelo holds out the adjusted, larger sum for Mars to consider. His first price some digits higher than he'd be happy to take.

”Where’s the fun in ’easy little asks’?” Angelo’s smile finds itself mirrored by one of Mars’ own, confidence never seeming to lack in either man. That right there is part of why Mars had decided to recruit angelo vestri to take part in this plan of his, because while there may be many pilots out there, and many who are willing to take part in less-than-legal affairs, only a few see excitement in things like these – value beyond the monetary gain that would come from it.

Angelo happens to be exactly the sort of person he needs, now all that’s left is convincing him…

”Plane is already covered. I think you’ll like it.” No more details are given, because there’s no need for them right at this moment. Mars is no stranger to coming up with plans like these, and painfully perfectionist as he is, he tends to be the sort of person who pays attention to every detail. Among them, utilising a plane that can’t be traced back to either of them in any way is one of the most basic.

That leaves Angelo’s actual pay; the generous sum of money that’s supposed to get him to gladly participate without any complaints (except that, let’s be honest, there will likely still be complaints, because that’s the sort of sass Mars expects from angelo vestri).

The banker takes the bright yellow piece of paper and looks at it, and without saying anything about it or even making a face, he takes his ever-so-fancy pen and scratches the sum written.

A new one takes its place, written right beneath, and this one is closer to a middle ground between both offers.

Once this is done and he has a look at it, he gives the note back to Angelo, smirking.

“As long as there's a thick door between the cockpit and cabin, then I'm sure I will.” Humour aside at Martín del Mar 's expense, as per their routine, Angelo is positive that he will actually like it.

Getting to fly in a new aircraft is a prospect that only proves to tempt him further.

And so commences the back and forth barter, the banker predictably handing Angelo back the little slip of yellow paper with another amended figure.

An eyebrow is lifted in feigned consideration, before the POG Bank pen is brought back down, space on the sticky note rapidly dwindling.

The pilot scratches out the number written by his familiar business partner, numbers just the slightest bit higher than the last.

Not really enough to make of a difference, aside from point and pride.

“What're you expecting to happen at this auction that you can't handle yourself, anyway?”

He hands back the square of sunshine yellow.

”Ha-ha.” Dryly, sarcastically, and ever so mockingly, the banker responds to Angelo’s quip, his amusement made obvious in his expression. ”Don’t worry, I have a lot of great stories to tell you to pass time on the way there.”

He does, and many of them are great indeed, but of course he’d favour the ones that would torment the pilot, because isn’t that just the way this business partnership of theirs is? Or, would it be more accurate to call it a friendship?

The thought leaves his mind as quickly as it came, and this time, while Angelo busies himself with changing the offered sum to one that’d match his pride, Mars stands, walking towards an elegant little cart that rests by one of the walls – across from the Luvdisc-filled fish tank. On it there are glasses of all shapes and sizes, and liquor bottles too, all of them reflecting the fluorescent light of the lamps in an array of colours.

”A drink?” He asks, reaching for a hexagonal bottle of floral design. A clear liquid is poured into a glass; gin distilled in the Johto region.

After a sip, he takes a step closer to the desk, taking the small yellow note, looking at it, and then handing it back.

”Fine, if a difference that small means that much to you.” A brow is quirked, yet Mars smiles at him. ”I can handle anything, Angelo, but only a fool goes alone into a place full of people that want him dead.”

Despite the weight of his words, they’re spoken with terrifying ease, as if this were a simple fact that is obvious about all this.
