MARCH UPDATE

With a new year, came a time for cleansing: start off the year clean, and you'll be clean for the whole year, so he was taught. It was more of a symbolic gesture, but it was one that Hideo felt compelled to follow out of habit, even now that he was outside of his parents' influence.

So he'd gone to a bathhouse, cleaning up each and every one of his Pokemon. Which did take a considerable amount of time; his team had expanded considerably since the previous year, and even though a number of Pokemon helped in the cleaning, it was taking days to get to them all.

But after much effort, he'd finally managed to clean them all! His Herculean task complete, he was ready to head back to camp and relax for a bit.

Until his Pokemon stopped him.

It was his turn to get cleaned.

So that was why he was here now, in a semi-private tub, getting washed down by the combined efforts of his Beheeyem (Psychically manipulating the washcloths), Starmie (wiping him with water), and Solrock (keeping the water hot). They didn't let him even lift a finger in his cleaning; he'd done so much work that it was time he got a treat.

Maybe he'd get lucky and someone would rent the bath his was adjacent to. They'd be separated by a wall, but they could still talk.

People were silly about all sorts of things. Some were all about being shy and not wanting to go to public bathhouses for one reason or another. Others were obsessed with washing because of the new year or something. Megan found both equally silly. Then again, given that she had worked for a Pokemart for so long, she was just numb to all sorts of holidays. That was why she’d spent most of the end of last year out there doing odd jobs on the road, far away from other people. That way, she’d managed to not have to listen to these stupid songs even once.

And now, after everyone blew their loads on fireworks, it was finally time to return to civilization. Aside from that dumb day when couples rubbed their love for one another in everyone’s faces, she would be free for a good while. That was good. Meant cleaning up, too. Hence, she was hear now, properly taking care of herself. Her Pokemon weren’t, though. They’d had their stint in a lake just the other day. Crystal clear, amazing water, but way too cold for Meg. Plus, most of her boys were, well, boys. While she didn’t really mind public bathhouses, it did feel weird to bring your own boys into the booth. Though she was probably in the minority with that. Then again, she decidedly did not want to know what some of these people and Pokemon may or may not have been doing in the other stalls. Not her business. Not her problem. Instead, she just whistled a tune of her own. Decidedly not holiday related at that.

His Beheeyem was very precise with his wiping, even getting behind Hideo’s ears. And with the perfect amount of pressure too; not too hard as to hurt Hideo, while using enough force to get rid of the gunk and grime that built up on his body. He could consider himself lucky Elga knew him so well; he’d had that Beheeyem for four years, yet it felt like they’d grown up together.

Though a light Water Gun to the top of his head interrupted his musing on his Beheeyem’s helpfulness. At least his Starmie had the decency to make their water blasts warm.

How did a Starmie warm up their water blasts?

Before he could think on that any longer, he could hear someone enter the bath next to them. Ah, good, someone to talk to! As much as Hideo could’ve talked to his Pokemon, he’d been doing just that for the past few days; he was hankering for some human contact.

And they weren’t letting him help with the cleaning. Nothing said they’d stop him from talking to someone else.

“That’s a nice tune!” Hideo said aloud, hopefully loud enough for the person in the next room to hear. He recognized it pretty quickly, joining in with the whistling.

And though he wasn't aware of it, his Solrock was already moving to the tune, rotating from side to side.

Huh? Meg wasn’t quite surprised to hear someone nearby, probably in the next booth over. That was kind of to be expected in some ways. Heck, she wasn’t even all too surprised at hearing a man’s voice. Well, a boy’s voice, really. Not exactly some kind of deep baritone that came to her ears there. Though it wasn’t entirely a bad voice, either. Not the squeaky droppings of a child. More like something that she could imagine hearing in a choir or so. So, it wasn’t as creepy as it could have been to be randomly approached by someone else.

Still weird though, since usually people did not exactly want to communicate when they were naked. Meg didn’t have as much an issue with that, but she’d kind of figured others might. At the very least, she had not expected anyone to join in, that much was for sure. Thus, she lightly sighed once they finished with this round of whistling. Though she probably wasn’t loud enough to be heard here. Unlike when she replied to the boy. “You seem to be quite the musical one. Choir or something?” It was probably just meaningless conversation, really. Not exactly the deepest thing there was. But hey, it was something at least. Better than randomly doing music with someone. Maybe.

It was nice, getting to harmonize on a song, even if it was just whistling. A single voice was good, but music worked so much better in a group. Hideo’s Pokemon were careful not to let their cleaning interrupt him as he whistled along.

It was only once the song finished that Hideo could get a decent idea who he was whistling in; sounded like a girl, maybe a teenager. And she definitely heard him, even complimenting his performance.

“Nah. I just got a lot of practice.” Even at home - especially when he was home, actually. “It’s a nice way to pass the time. And I had a lot of time to kill when I was still at home.” Training Pokemon could only take so much of his time, especially when he only had a few out at once. Now that he was out doing gyms, he was free to do what he wanted anyhow he wanted.

“How about you? Your whistling’s pretty good too! You on a choir, or you just practice a lot?”

If she had heard his age assessment, she would probably have gotten irked. Meg definitely wasn’t old enough yet to be flattered by being considered younger. Though she was probably guilty of the very same thing. Yet, as long as neither of them put too much emphasis on this, it would fortunately fall to the wayside one way or another.

Instead, the conversation drifted into more harmless territories. After all, he was complimenting her. Just on something she didn’t exactly deem worthy of much praise. Hence, she scratched the back of her head. Then, she realized that boy incognito could not see that. Then she realized that it was probably a good thing….[break]
Her response had to be audible. “It’s just something I sometimes do. And when you have to have music at all times during work, whistling just comes natural I guess. Though usually I just ended up getting sick of hearing the same jingles over and over and over and over.” She stopped herself there, feeling the all too familiar urge to complain come up. And that was supposed to be so last year.

The last thing Hideo would've wanted to do was cause an argument at a time when people were supposed to relax. Telling people what age he thought they were was something he'd learned not to do when he was much younger.

It sounded like her training wasn't much different from his, getting singing in when she didn't have much else to do.

"Yeah, hearing the same stuff over and over can get tiring. I try to listen to a whole lot of different songs." Though not everyone had that luxury; he heard that retail workers didn't have that luxury, and were forced to listen to the same songs every day. Especially during the holidays.

Was she a retail worker? Hideo thought to ask, but another Water Gun followed by facial-scrubbing interrupted him.

"I even listen to my Pokemon sing sometimes. Some of them have been pretty creative! Some of the Pokemon I got here are pretty good at it!"

“Silence is also quite nice,” she replied, though she quite quickly realized how rude that might have sounded, so she briefly harrumphed before adding a little bit. “Don’t mean you are annoying right now or anything like that. Just like going out into the world and don’t have any music other than natural ambience.” That probably was the best explanation she could give there. Not that she strictly speaking had to give one, but it kind of just felt right to do so. He was an amicable kind of person so far, after all.

There was a brief interruption with some quirting noises. Probably one of his Pokemon doing something. Hopefully something like that. Though he quickly brought her attention to that topic anyway. “Don’t think any of my Pokemon are great singers. They’re fighters mostly, really. Though I guess there can be art in combat too. After all, singing other Pokemon to sleep is not too different from just knocking them out.” A somewhat coarse laugh was added to what definitely was supposed to be a joke.

Hideo could only offer an unseeable shrug. "I guess so," he said, "Sometimes it's nice to just relax by a campfire with those around you. Or just listen to the sounds of nature as you walk along a route."

Though considering what some Pokemon were like, those "sounds of nature" could be anything but calming. A quiet, uneventful walk through a route was the exception rather than the rule, as he'd found.

"I got a few Pokemon that are really good singers. I can bounce a lot off my Audino or Toxtricity, and we sometimes just sing together." To be expected from two sound-based Pokemon. "Maybe they're the ones getting my others to sing."

He paused for a moment, thinking for a moment. Quietly, he spoke to his Pokemon: "Hey, you guys mind singing for her? Show off what you know!"

The three Pokemon looked at each other, before the Solrock let out a small tune. A moment later, the Starmie joined in, harmonizing its voice. As they sang, they looked towards the Beheeyem, waiting for him to join in.

But he simply blushed, looking back down at Hideo and scrubbing the boy's hair. A disappointed Starmie squirted the Beheeyem with a small Water Gun, before going back to singing.

"I'm sure they'll get my Beheeyem to sing eventually!" Hideo giggled.
